Joanne & I enjoyed the run out to Tora, good company & good Wairarapa scenery. The sight of so many young seals was a bit of a bonus too. Our next run will take us to the Kapiti coast, which I know will be another great day out, with good company, good food & the bonus of a few readings from the "Book of Murray" to inspire us all. In August we are holding our Colonial Cup Run; traditionally this is where new restorations are presented to the club for the first time. If you have a car, bike or truck that you would like to put forward for the restoration awards, could you please let me know by the July clubnight at the latest. In September, we have an opportunity for a display at the Upper Hutt Spring Festival, which is normally a great family day with something for everyone. Later on the same day we will be holding our Twilight run. Ernie & Norma Pailthorpe have very generously invited us to finish the run at their home to watch the sunset & have a barbeque which sounds OK to me. Our November Rally is also coming along. This year, as well as the rally on Saturday 4th, we are working on having a public display in Wellington on Sunday 5th. We hope for good support for this to promote our club as it enters its 60th year of operation. Looking forward to seeing you at the next event.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Bill Pinkham
The Club has been lacking a Parts Manager, as the branch had received no nominations for the position at the AGM in May. Alick Jenner, who stood down from the position at the last AGM because he had held the appointment for four years, has been approached by the committee and has agreed to take up the position again, so has been co-opted as Acting Parts Manager. I was lent a video recently that contained, among other things (all good wholesome stuff), a section on the 1955-57 Chevrolet. Did you know that in 1955 a Chevrolet broke the record for the run up Pikes Peak in 17 minutes, breaking the previous record by 2 minutes? Looks rather pedestrian compared to Sabastian Loeb’s 8minutes 13 second 2013 record for the 19.99km run, but Chevrolet was on top in more ways than one. Club night debate: “That women should not be allowed to drive our club cars”. Well that was a very light hearted discussion that raised a lot of laughs, and was enjoyed by all. It was nice to just sit down the back for a good part of the evening for a change and have a good laugh. Being the start of my second year in the chair, I am finding the job a bit easier. Leprechaun rally, looking forward to this one again. Another place that a lot of us have never been to before, and may never go again, but will forever be imprinted in our brains as an experience. Memories!
Well that is it from me for this month, see you again,
Bill

At the beginning of the winter we have had the best turn out for a rally (except for the November Rally) in quite a time with 19 vehicles and just a simple run - no tricky navigating. After Selwyn Warren’s letter to the Editor last month (which I agree with) I wonder was it a coincidence or did everyone else rush out to support our Club Captain Neale’s belief that noone wants a brain teasing set of instructions with time trials and straight line diagrams etc. Now is your chance to let us know what is the most popular, and should we at least run the odd section that requires the brain to work in at least one rally in the year (perhaps the November Rally? Could you please phone , email, tell me at club night or even post your opinion to me at 21 Walnut Way, Maungaraki, Lower Hutt as I am going to do a bit of an unofficial survey. Last but not least, my apologies to Ernie and Norma Pailthorpe for missing their name out of the Ladies Rally results last month.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

Please can you help the Branch celebrate our 60 years with photos, documents etc for a montage of events to be displayed in the Clubrooms. From the archives we will be displaying photos from our Inaugural Rally, November 1958. The archive has no photos and few records from our 10th (1968), 21st (1979), 25th (1983) annual rallies. Do you have records of these events? Please could you delve into your photos to see what you can find! If you do find some, could you help by loaning or donating your records covering any event during our 60 years that will support our display? It could be one or many photos, VHS tapes or documents relating to the Branch.

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you’ll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.
After a couple of weeks, move up to 10 lb potato bags. Then try 50-lb potato bags and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I’m at this level). After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag. Contributions for the Motoring Spirit are always welcome Articles, photos, reports or tit bits. Electronic versions are preferred but photos and text can be scanned or typed up. Send to the Editor - claire.benge@xtra.co.nz or arrange by phone with her to get a hard copy by mail or at Club Nights

Past Events There were no past no events . All quiet on the western front (and at the other compass points).
Coming Events Wellington Biennial Rally:
- The Biennial Motorcycle Rally will be held the on weekend of 27th- 28th January. This time the rally will be held in the Wairarapa with a Featherston start. - The Saturday dinner will be at our clubrooms. - Hal O’Rorke circulated a couple of T shirts as fabric samples and a book indicating colour choices. After some discussion it has been left to Hal to make the final choice so he can get the cost and prepare an application to Pub Charity for sponsorship. - Trevor reported on progress with the route planning. A few possible start/finish venues have been investigated but no option has yet been chosen. Venue pricing is one concern. - The Wairarapa branch has been approached for use of their clubrooms as the lunch venue. South Island Tour - “Quadruple Bike Pass”: Thu 15th - Sat 24th March. Aaron reported that he is checking the Interislander fares as they may be cheaper than the group booking fares on Bluebridge. This may mean an evening ride from Picton to Blenheim. Taranaki Rubber Duckie: Our start to the motorcycle season. This is in the national calendar as 16th September. Peter Simpson will check the date and obtain entry forms. Leprechaun Rally: Sunday 25th June: This will not be going off-road this year. Instead it is going to coastal Wairarapa. Two members went and enjoyed it. THE SUNDAY RUN
Richard Davies
June’s Sunday Run visit to the Budhinyarama Buddhist Monastery at the top of Stokes Valley was an interesting experience for the owners of ten cars - seven club cars and 3 modern cars. The VCC group were allowed to look around, to follow the meditation track through the bush, and to use the kitchen and verandah to have their cut lunches. The monastery is the focus for a thriving Buddhist community and serves a variety of functions. While principally a residence for those wishing to participate or train in the monastic lifestyle, the large public area and meeting hall are used for religious festivals, public meetings and retreats. The forested area with remote lodgings provides a suitable environment for seclusion.
The July Sunday Run
was unable to be advertised because the first Sunday was on 2 July before the July Motoring Spirit was issued. There are tentative plans to go into Wellington to see the exhibition at the National War Memorial. A follow up will be reported in the August Motoring Spirit.
Sunday Run - 6 August 2017 at 11 am meet outside the Janus Bakkerij at 700 High Street, Lower Hutt (north of the Hutt Hospital).
We will have a coffee there (some parking out the back off Mitchell Street) before heading off for an interesting drive, - contact Ian on 237 6555 for more information

FROM THE LIBRARY
David Crooks
A Century Ago cont’d. As WW1 progressed most of the established motor vehicle manufacturing capacity of the various participants was directed to the production of munitions and other war materials, and the remaining motor vehicle output was directed to the same requirement. For some military purposes the need could be met by existing or planned purpose built vehicles such as trucks, vans, buses, tractors and other utility vehicles. Much of the growing need for specialist machines was readily met by adaptation and modification of existing models, e.g. armoured cars, artillery haulers, refuelers, ambulances etc. which, as we have noted, led to purely military purpose designs such as the tank and its variants. Nevertheless, a significant proportion of the military requirement continued to be met by established makes and models, which, often in a range of body forms, continued throughout the war. Especially was this the case for staff cars that progressively replaced horse drawn/ridden means of travel by those involved in command, direction, planning and support services, where the car was much more effective and cheaper to run than animal transport. They became increasingly used in all land spheres of military activity and were particularly useful where time and distance were major factors such as the widespread fields of conflict in the Middle East. Following are some of the vehicles involved in this range of activity. Firstly, British examples. Crossley 20/25. A direct descendant of the 1909 20 hp, it came out in 1912, and in 1913 was selected for service with the newly formed Royal Flying Corps. A 5-seat tourer, it was powered by a 4 cylinder 4.5 litre engine RAC rated at 25 hp but developed 40 bhp at 1500 rpm for a max. speed of 55 mph and road range of 250 miles. For military service it was fitted with a lower ratio back axle and twin rear tyres spoked to a single hub. Rugged and reliable, over 6,000 served the RFC in staff car, light truck/tender and ambulance forms, and some 4,000 or more were used by the Army and other services. Below, 20/25 RFC variants: top row left, cars at factory for despatch to RFC; top right, staff car RAF 1918, twin tyres on the rear and spare wheels are just discernible; lower left, ambulance version; lower right, light truck/tender hauling a Sopwith Pup less its wings and tail assembly.

Vauxhall D Type. Its predecessor, the high performance “Prince Henry, was a market version of the three car team of Vauxhall specials that competed with success in the 1910 Prince Henry Motor Trials and was produced in modest numbers as a high priced sports tourer until 1914. The 4 litre D Type was a modified and more affordable version that came out in 1912 and, with further refinements, remained in production until 1921. A sturdy and reliable performer it was selected as an Army staff car and entered service in 1915. More than 1,500 went into military service, mostly in France, but some were assigned to allied forces and served in other theatres. The great majority were open staff cars but some had saloon bodies in a number of forms, presumably for special purposes, and there was an ambulance version. Some staff cars may have been armed with a machine-gun for defence. Below, top row left the D Type tourer; right, King George V, centre of group, and the D Type staff version that conveyed him on visits to the Western Front battlefields in July 1917; lower left the closed-in utility version and, right, the ambulance.
Sunbeam 12/16 and 16/20. Both models appeared in 1910 as 4-5 seat tourers and also available as sporty 2 seaters with, respectively, 2.4 and 3.8 litre engines – the latter raised to 4 litres in 1914, they were quality cars and highly regarded. Both models were used as staff cars, some 1,600 in all, with the 16/20 as majority contributor. Some vehicles were produced as ambulances but there does not appear to have been other versions for military purpose, although some could have been modified in the field. Sunbeam had been designing and building aero engines for some years and with a growing demand were required to direct their manufacturing capacity to this need, and to building aircraft. Their motor vehicle lines were shut down and from 1915 these vehicles were built under license by Rover. Below left the 16/20 staff car and centre the ambulance version; right, line-up of Vauxhall D Type (first 3) and 2 Sunbeam 16/20, in Belgium c1916.

Norm Willis
One of the many young men who in the early 1960's strived to emulate Bruce McLaren
The 1930 MG M type was being continuously improved in his quest of more speed. The drive shaft was shortened to allow the fitting of a 4 speed gearbox with remote shift of his own design. Home made twin carb. manifold was fitted. In pride of place in the middle of the dash was a 6 inch diameter vacuum gauge for fine tuning. I do not know how successful these modifications were but I do know that he was very fast through the Akatarawas; one of the many young men who in the early 1960's strived to emulate Bruce McLaren.
If you look closely you will identify the driver as a very young Roger White. It was his first car, which he bought when he was 15. In this photo he and the passenger, his school mate Norman Willis, are 16.
Murphy’s other laws: 9. It is said that if you line up all the cars in the world end-to-end, someone from California would be stupid enough to try to pass them. 11

Jenny Jackson What a lovely day for a drive to Tora. We all met in the Square at Martinborough for coffee then we drove to Tora – which took about an hour – part of the drive was on dirt roads. John and I had not been to Tora for many years, so it was lovely going back - like a lot of people we had walked the “Tora walk” – which is a three day walk from a farm cottage out to the beach on the first day then along the beach road on the second day. The third day everyone walks back to the first cottage. While we were on that walk a Kune Kune pig came running out of a driveway and chased us for quite some time. We ran as fast as we could – eventually the little pig lay down on the side of the road and went to sleep. We were terrified it was going to bite us but we were told later that he just wanted to be friends and we should have given him a pat. We laugh about it now and the visit to Tora bought back lovely memories. There were a few campers at Tora, a few toilets, a few seals and some lovely homes. The VCC cars parked in a reserve right on the water’s edge and we enjoyed a picnic lunch. It was one of those perfect weather days until we were about to leave and the rain arrived. The drive to and from Tora was lovely, the hills around that part of the country are all different shapes and sizes.

It is 4:30am Monday – been awake for some time. My thoughts turned to the rally yesterday. Has Claire fingered someone to write a report? Oh well, get up, write it up then watch the Americas Cup. Only two motorcyclists at Neighbourhood Coffee for the start – Peter Simpson on his Matchless Compie and myself on my Honda 400/4. But a good turnout of cars to enjoy the fine weather and clear sky. Captain Neale gave out the straightforward instructions: Jellicoe St, White Rock Rd, Tora Rd and left into Te Awaiti Rd at the coast, and find a picnic area.
12
I left mid-pack but cruised past most cars before the twisty stuff. Only the Betteridge Model A in front cruising easily at 80kph and never below 70. With interesting scenery and enjoyable winding road it was some time before I passed Ray and Tasi. Then it was left into Tora Rd and eventually to the gravel. By Te Awaiti Rd the Model A was frequently in my mirrors so I waited for them to pass and choose a picnic site. At the first marked picnic site Ray and Bill Pinkham (Modern) pulled in but I decided to explore to the end of the road before returning. The convoy then arrived at the picnic grounds. I didn’t record the cars but I remember three Austin 7s, 2 Model As, 2 Ford pickups, a De Soto, a Terraplane, plus a gaggle of moderns. As we lunched the clouds came over but no sign of rain. Peter and I went to see the Opua wreck before heading back. The cloud thickened and rain came before Martinborough, where Peter stopped to put on wet weather gear. I pushed on home through heavy rain until the Rimutaka Hill where it eased to light rain. And so to home after a very enjoyable day.
Thanks Neale.
The Great Debate At the June Club Night Ray Betteridge organised and chaired a debate with a motion “that women should not be allowed to drive our club cars”. We were allowed 3 minutes each person to present our arguments and 2 minutes for rebuttal. Ray cunningly allotted more women to defend the motion and more men to negate it but the teams argued very well on both sides. The final voting (judged by clapping) was narrowly allotted to the positive side, although it was very obviously a biased judgement made by a male chairperson and a dominantly male audience. And there was a lot of laughter and fun enjoyed by the teams and the audience.
The Negative team: David Crooks, Claire Benge and Phil Kid
The Positive team: Brian Ward, Cathye Haddock and Wendy Rozenberg

REMEMBRANCE RALLY / SOCIAL COUNTRY RUN SUNDAY 23RD JULY This event is held once a year to remember those who have passed this year. It is just a social outing to a place of interest and a lunch together. We have a reading from “The Book of Murray“. Murray Mitchel was a club member who left his joke books to another member and also donated the Trophy for this event. It is a fun day out for a drive in our vehicles. This year we are to meet at the Club rooms at 9.30am for a 10.00am start. We will be going up the Kapiti Coast to visit first The Kapiti Aviation Museum. Then on to Slapsy’s in Otaki Beach for Lunch. Meals range from $10 to a Sunday Roast for $20. Other meals available. If you don’t want to book a lunch, feel free to bring a picnic to have on the beach. Kapiti Coasters who would like to come on this run are welcome to join us at the Aviation Museum by the control tower at 11.30am. But please advise Alastair if you are coming. Alastair and Angelica would like to have numbers for this event. Could you please let them know by email - mccarthys@xtra.co.nz or phone 589 8248 or add your name to the list on notice board. Unfortunately there is no menu available on their website. 1.10pm Leave for the Learning Connexion, 182 Eastern Hutt Rd, Lower Hutt. The entrance is marked with colourful banners. Drive up the long driveway to the marked parking area. 1.30pm The tour starts If you would like to come, please let Ann or Hal O'Rorke know by Wednesday 19 July as numbers and names are needed for the lunch venue. ann@annandhal.com 0274731136 home 045651162 hal@annandhal.com 0274118162 Every monthly Kapiti Run is special with interesting things to see and do and, on July 26th, the event does not break with that tradition. After a lunch at the Petone Working Mens’ Club Bistro, members will be treated to tours of the studios at The Learning Connexion in Wingate. (And, yes, the ’x’ is correct!) The week is a little different from normal for the students as all, whether full or part time, have a full time week for the start of term. In addition, some of the distance students from all over New Zealand come to benefit from the on-site experience. They may be doing Figurative Sculpture, where they’ll be learning the fundamentals of how to build a 3D figure or Materiality and Process in which, through experimental
16
testing they investigate the qualities and properties of any material that they choose. In another studio, From Wax to Body Adornment has students carving or moulding designs in wax and then undertaking the lost wax and centrifugal casting process. (Needless to say, Hal often reminds me that I should be able to create small vintage car parts now that I’ve done this workshop several times!) In other classes: in Mirror Mirror on the Wall, people are illustrating fairy tales but with their own modern twist, What is a Portrait explores what a portrait can be to enable the artist to capture a person's qualities and character beyond the bland and obvious, and Gateway to Creativity has guest artists come in and share their experiences and ideas on sustaining their own creativity. Other studios have people working independently and that certainly applies to the Hot Arts area in which some members may be particularly interested. Conversely, staff and students have expressed a keen interest in seeing the old vehicles, and maybe drawing and photographing them so, please, do bring your club eligible vehicle. Parking is being set aside on the campus and is up a long driveway from the Eastern Hutt Road so should be very safe. It’s an excellent opportunity to advertise the VCC especially as many on campus are mature students. Please let Hal or me know by July 19th if you’re coming as the Working Mens’ Club needs names and numbers and the TLC Site Manager needs to know how many parking places to arrange. (Please don’t contact Alison and John this month.) For phone details see the Kapiti Coast Midweek Run notice at the top of previous page (16) in this Motoring Spirit .Looking forward to seeing you!
