Chairman’s Report December 2016: Somewhat inclement weather at the start of the month meant there was a low turn-out for the picnic at Wenderholm. The Far North Tour was well supported by our branch with eleven of our vehicles on the tour. The organisers Lyn Wrack and Donna Nobilo managed to find a road or two that we haven’t taken before. Again, it was an enjoyable weekend. Just 20 of us gathered for the first BBQ Club Night dinner of the summer but as usual it was a great time to catch up with what others have been up to. This coming Club Night will also be our Christmas dinner but this year will take the form of a BBQ with BYO meat and a salad to share. Six members brought their cars along to the Wellsford Show and Santa parade. A little miscommunication along the way meant that we were not included in the Santa Parade but I’m sure our clutches weren’t too upset by that. Phil and Viv Maurice gave their RME Riley an airing and we had our first look at Graeme Logue’s very original Singer Vogue which with one previous owner has just 33,000 miles on the clock. Brian Mason rounded up the neighbours and between them drove nine of his vintage tractors in from Tomarata to display at the Show. Coming up this weekend is the Warkworth Santa Parade followed on Sunday by our visit to Summerset Falls retirement village. On the last occasion we visited, a number of residents enjoyed rides in our vehicles. Afterwards, the staff will be putting on a barbeque for us. This month’s newsletter also has the entry form for the “Are We There Yet?” Rally for the Mike Brown Memorial Trophy. Although this event will not be held until March, entrants are urged to book accommodation early at Waipu Cove for the Saturday night. Thanks to Chris Harvey and Viv Maurice who have offered to take on some of the Winter Woollies organisational roles for next year’s Winter Woollies. It would be particularly helpful if someone could put their hand up to organise the Sunday activity/visit for that weekend. We do not print a newsletter in January and unfortunately at this stage we are unable to confirm final details for the 150th Warkworth A & P Show on Anniversary Weekend. However, an outline of what we think may happen is provided in this newsletter. When details are known, they will be emailed around. If you have not received notice by say, 20 th January, give either Anne Richardson or me a call to find out what is happening.

The year seems to have passed quicker than ever. I’d like to thank our Committee and members for their efforts over the year to continue to make our club the enjoyable organisation it is to be a part of and on behalf of the Committee I’d like to wish all our members a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year. Happy motoring

Leon

Club Captain’s Report. The weather continues to thwart some of our activities, but those intrepid motorists who soldier on reap the rewards of interesting activities and good company! Leon has reported on most of the activities this month. The Warkworth Santa Parade is arduous for early clutches with 2 circuits of the town, including up Mill Lane at walking pace. Congratulations to the cars that participated. Our visit to Summerset Falls Retirement village is much appreciated by the residents who join us for short drives and a BBQ. Thank you to the cars and drivers who came along. If you know of other such venues we could visit as part of our community activities, please let me know. Our last Picnic and club nights of the year are imminent, I look forward to a sunny BBQ (BYO) on the beach at Campbells Beach, and a festive BBQ at the Club night. I hope everyone will come in festive attire, and bring seasonal salads or deserts to share. The decorators will have been at work, so come and join in! We always have a quiet month in January during the school holiday period. However the first mid week picnic of the new year will be at Brick Bay on 4th January. Then on January 28th/29th we have the 150th A&P Show, 2 days this time, and the Parliamentary Tour coming through on Sunday morning. Please see Leon’s article. It feels to me that it will be important for our club to “put on a good show” both to the local public, but also the veteran car drivers from other branches. February will be busy with a Picnic on 1st at Scandrett RP; the club night on 9th with a guest speaker on TEAL flying boats; our first Posh Picnic in Perry Rd on 12th; and the Swap meet at the end of the month. We will be needing volunteers on Saturday 25th as usual. All best wishes for the festive season from the Club Captain’s team; Happy and Safe Motoring, Anne Richardson.

150th Warkworth A & P Show 28 – 29 January 2017 The Warkworth A & P Show this year will be the 150th and will be held across both the Saturday and Sunday of Auckland Anniversary Weekend. Being such a milestone event we are hoping that our members will make an effort to support the show through displaying their vehicles on both days. The Show Committee have talked about offering over-night secure storage for vehicles on the Saturday night but details of this are not yet available. The Show Committee is keen that we start on the Saturday morning in Warkworth, parade through the town, out along Woodcocks Rd, across Falls Rd and through Hudson Rd to cross at the traffic lights directly into the Show Grounds. While drivers and vehicles have free entry, passengers need to pay. To ensure there is no congestion created by our arrival, we will arrange to collect payment in Warkworth before the procession to the Show Grounds begins. At this stage, we will tentatively say that we should assemble in the Paper Plus Car Park by 9.00 a.m. to begin the parade. These details are not final and may change before the event, in which case we will email around an update ahead of time. Displaying our vehicles is part of both promoting the VCC and our branch but is also part of our role as a community organisation. It was through this type of activity that we were successful in securing grants totalling $25,000 some seven years ago to refurbish our clubrooms. Many branches around the country have supported Daffodil Day through delivering daffodils using their vintage vehicles. Our Committee made a decision that we would give our support to our local Hospice where we could. To this end, we are hoping to have a stall at the show on Saturday 28th from which we will sell “Retro/Vintage” items which could include anything from glassware and chinaware to books and clothing. We have a table set up at the clubrooms for folk to leave items they may like to donate. Our Christmas Club Night on 8 December and the Coffee Cleaning morning on 14 December may be the only opportunity members have before the Show to bring these items along. Alternatively, members can contact Anne Richardson and arrange a time to meet her to hand over any items. On Sunday 29 January, some 42 pre-1919 vehicles will arrive from around 10.30 a.m. at the Show Grounds where they will stop for an early lunch on what will be the first day of the centennial of the 1917 Parliamentary Tour of the Winterless North. It would be great to display our vehicles alongside these Veterans. Participants in the Parliamentary Tour will be having lunch at the Rugby Clubrooms and it is expected that the vehicles will be departing on the next leg of the Tour by 12.30 p.m. 12

Technical Glass and Crystal Repair Service Hello, my name is Stephen Lyons. This is just a brief message to let you know of a service I provide, which may be of use to you at some time in your line of business.

For many years, I worked with my brother Ken, in a business called Western Glass. I am now working from home, as Ken retired this year. I specialize in: intricate hand bevelled glass pieces for all types of clocks, e.g. carriage clocks, etc barometers scientific instruments or gauges I can also supply convex glass for clocks I do all my bevelling the old fashioned way, on machines that date back to the 1930's, and can drill holes, and fit pointers for barometers, and also fit the glass to the bezels. I can also make new bevelled mirrors for antique silver hand mirrors, and bevelled pieces for leadlights. As well as the bevelling work, I also grind and polish chips from the rims of crystal glasses, decanters and bowls, etc, and repair Murano glass items, and similar objects, if practical. The Western Glass website (www.westernglass.co.nz) is still running at present should you wish to view photos, etc. Please note that the silvering service featured on it, is no longer provided by us, as this side of the business has been sold. I shall in time have my own website, but this one will provide you with examples of the work I was doing then, and am still doing now. If I can be of any help, whether providing a quote, or advice, please do not hesitate to contact me via email or phone. You can courier or post items to me at: 98 Triangle Rd, Massey, Auckland 0614.
