Chairman’s Report May 2017: Local lad Kenny Campbell addressed our April club-night, telling us about building his V8 Indian motorcycle. Although built in the style of a 1930’s bike, Ken assured us it was not an attempt at creating any sort of replica but just the need to tick one more idea off his bucket list. His skill and talent left us all amazed. We were similarly amazed by the sound when he started and ran it in the clubrooms. If you missed out, you can hear it running on facebook. Just type V8 Indian in the search box and it will come up. For many, April was a busy month. With impending rough weather, Club Captain Anne made a quick decision to change the Tawharanui Picnic to a café run to the Honey Centre. This also showed us how effective email is becoming as a means of communication for our members. Richard Lloyd’s front paddock is an ideal spot to run the Gymnic. Despite the wet weather running up to the event, the ground remained firm. Doug and Anne Hamilton took honours again this year. It was interesting seeing Brian Strickland’s cab-over Ford – a very eye catching vehicle. Thanks Hibiscus Coast for organising this event this year! Only 61 vehicles supported the National North Island Easter Rally this year, which considering the cost of entry, was particularly disappointing. Our branch took the Sun Alliance Trophy for the greatest percentage of branch members in attendance. Apart from Brendda and I, our members included Robert and Beth Page (1928 Chevrolet), Brian and Viv Guest (1952 De Soto), Paul and Bev Hicks (1955 MG TF), Maureen Belch (1958 Wolseley), and Doug and Anne Hamilton (1972 Fiat 500). The remains of cyclone Debbie earlier in the month provided serious challenges for the rally plotters. The original route through private Watercare roads had to be abandoned due to slips and closures and as late as the Wednesday before the event, the afternoon route had to be re-designed when the road north of Kaiaua was closed with slips. The rally was run on quiet country roads between Drury and Kaiaua with a morning tea stop at Ararimu School. The Sunday event was a visit to Richard Langridge’s Rolls Royce collection. This is an amazing collection of not only Rolls vehicles but also Bentleys, Lagondas, Bristols and an Alvis. I’m looking forward to going again at the end of May on the run organised by Len Woodgate (see details later in this newsletter). Len is currently experiencing some ill-health. We hope he recovers quickly. With this newsletter you should receive the entry form for the Winter Woollies Wander, this year being set by Frances Ross with help from Noelene Quedley. Thanks to those who responded positively to Chris Harvey’s request for hosts to billet out-of-branch entrants, we currently have enough beds for 22 people. Happy motoring Leon

Club Captain’s Report. April has been an unusual month. There have been activities outside the branch that have seen members participating away from the area,, and the weather has played a part in bringing out survival mode! The picnic at Tawharanui RP was abandoned in favour of a cafe lunch at the Honey Centre. Fortunately 12 of us saw the email and enjoyed a pleasant chat away from the rain. Club night was a great success for those who braved the weather. Kenny Campbell’s amazing engineering was something we could all admire. AND we heard it going! It was good to host some motorbike enthusiasts as well. Thank you to Dave Oliver for arranging the evening. The Gymnic organised by the Hibiscus Coast Enthusiasts was a lot of fun. A window in the weather and a well drained pasture contributed. Doug and Anne Hamilton were the winners with Leon and Brendda and Karl and Joy only just behind. Maybe more members will come next year? May has 2 Sunday runs to make up for missing out in April. James and Gloria Lawrie have arranged our outing on May 7th to the Legge Property. Len Woodgate has arranged a visit to Richard Langridge and his grand set up. Some people visited as part of the Easter Rally, but want to go again- too much to take in when it is crowded. For both these events please look at the separate items in this newsletter.
This is also the start of our winter cafe lunches on the first Wednesday of the month. We start on May 3rd at the Morris & James in Matakana. Just to remind you, please support your committee by coming to the AGM there will be nibbles to reward all those who come! Happy and Safe Motoring, Anne and the Team
