CLUB NEWS We welcome a new member Guy Stewart to the Branch. Guy owns a 1973 Holden Monaro and we look forward to you joining us on our Runs etc. ROSCO trials are appearing on the events calendar. John Fowler organises this for our Branch and we will be requesting some assistance for John next month. Note that the Branch AGM is coming up on 11 th June. Plans are afoot for it to be held in the Hokitika area. We do have a new Chairman ready to take charge but will probably be looking for a couple of new Committee members at this stage. Think about it.

EVENTS ELSEWHERE The NZ VCC has had an open invitation to the MTA 100: Car Show of the Century celebrations to be held in Wellington on 29/30 April at the TSB Arena. INVITATION FROM NELSON BRANCH‌ Hello Marlborough and Westcoast VCC The Nelson Branch is holding an open day on 14th May and we will be opening our new club rooms, presenting some 50yr badges, holding our restoration of the year, and gymkhana events. All of the other car and bike clubs in the district have been invited to attend as a free day (bring a plate for afternoon tea was the suggestion). CLASSIC RUN – From Tom & Robyn Williams

April Fool Run 2017 52 cars and this included 8 members cars of the West Coast Vintage Car Club set out on this years run to Southland. For most non West Coasters, the first night was Hari Hari. The Williams/Weir and Mitchell cars had their first night at Haast. Some left much earlier! The morning was cool and cloudy, but soon a beautiful day developed and the tops of the convertibles were opened up, driving was easy for the second night at Wanaka. The first official greeting was at Wanaka Airport at the Café for a hearty cooked breakfast in among a collection of vintage cars. We all made our way to Te Anau and happy hour at The Moose Tavern. Up bright and early for the drive to Milford Sound. High cloud and mild weather with the native sand flies. Eau de dimp was out in force! Once out on the water, they disappeared and we enjoyed the cruise out to the open sea with an informative commentary from the captain and crew. One legend was that a maiden was bathing in a waterfall and when finished she emerged 10 years younger. Marg Singer was restrained as she attempted to jump in. On the way back up the Milford Tunnel the sound of 30 odd cars was something I will remember. Dinner at the Distinction Hotel that night and an early night for the big day motoring on Sunday. We left Te Anau via Manapouri for some hard and fast motoring to Invergargill. Coffee at Bill Richardson Transport Museum. 3 hours was spent inside this amazing complex, well worth a visit. Onward to Dunedin and final Dinner at Larnach Castle complete with Scotsman in kilt and Haggis. A great night. We hear that many had stopovers on their way home. We arrived home on Tuesday after a stop at Oamaru. This is the only day we didn’t put the hood down as it was raining in Canterbury. Thanks for that Robyn and Tom – Photo below at Wanaka

Also received a photo (below) from Nola Weir – The Model A’s meeting at Claytons are off to Napier today (11th April) for their Annual Rally. Safe travels guys and we expect a FULL report when you get home.

LATE NEWS I have just received an email from the Southland Branch inviting us to partake in their 2018 Easter Rally to be held over Friday 30 th March, Saturday 31st March and Sunday 1st April . As the Jaguar Car Club is also hosting their national event in Invercargill that weekend, they recommend that bookings for accommodation be made early. The event will be based around Stadium Southland and there is a good range of accommodation in that general area.

AND TO WRAP UP…. You will have seen the photo in the Grey Star of David and our Essex taken by Paul McBride prior to the Scenicland Rally. I sent the cutting down to Balclutha to Audrey, the daughter of a previous owner of the Essex when they lived in Kurow, she was a young girl. Her reply included this quote which I simply have to share with you all…

“The dear old girl is still ticking over and it’s so good to hear that you are still rallying. It sounded so good and will be all over now. We trust everything went like clockwork. I still find it hard to relate your spanking looking Essie to ours in the 50’s. Covered in mud and cobwebs and never being sure if we would reach our destination, depending on her mood of the day, or even if she would start!”

Well, nothing’s changed in all those years, she’s still a moody cow. Amazing to think she was called ESSIE way back then, we have a wee black and white photo of Essie with Audrey’s parents taken back in 1948 at Kurow. It is certainly great when you can trace some of the history of your car and actually find someone of the family.

THAT’S ALL FOLKS!!
