CHARLESTON 150TH ANNIVERSARY Several vehicles travelled out to Charleston last Saturday to take part in their celebrations. They were – Tom & Daphne Griffin - Chev Dave & June Campbell – Essex Arthur Topliss – Model A John & Lyn Rothery – Bedford truck Bev & Butch Thompson - Dodge Trevor Evans - Zephyr Ray & Alistair Lee - Wolseley Colin & Elain Peacock & guests - Rover
The event attracted a good crowd, there were heaps of stalls, food, music plus horse & cart rides. That’s only a small description, there was a lot more going on that we didn’t see. Drizzle dampened it a bit which was a shame and the sun came out when it was just about all over. As always, the cars attracted plenty of attention. John Rothery was highly amused when he was told a lady had gone up to his truck, patted and kissed the grill, she must like the big boys.
MARLBOROUGH RALLY 12/13 OCTOBER Pat & Elaine Knowles and Dave & June Campbell went up to the biennial Rally in Blenheim last month. We left on the Friday morning, must have had a tail wind because we left Greymouth at 9.00am and with stops were there by 3.15pm. We went along to the meal catered for by the Branch at their Clubrooms at Brayshaw Park on the Friday night, it was a nice evening and good to catch up with old friends from other Branches. A lovely meal too. Saturday, we met at Brayshaw Park and our route took us over Taylors Pass at the back of Blenheim to come out just north of Seddon where we had a catered morning tea ready for us. That part of the day had its own excitement (photo below) when a local in his 4wd ute had to pass a group of us from behind and misjudged the front vehicle he got his right wheels in the soft stuff and avoided rolling down a 50metre or so drop to a creek by hitting the only tree in that particular stretch of road. He was not hurt but was a very lucky man, he said he travels that road all the time but…. impatience eh! We went on to have lunch again catered for by the Branch on their new mobile BBQ at Cable Beach (photos below). The way home was through Yealands Vineyard and Winery, immaculate, all mowed between the lines of grapes, chooks free range, big speakers on posts for music for the vines, beautiful view overlooking the sea out to Cook Straight, it was lovely. Very environmentally friendly. The winery was open for tasting and sales which tempted a few. The evening meal was at a local restaurant, again a good opportunity to catch up with others. We had a longer trip home on the Sunday, with a strong southerly wind trying to stop us leaving the place, both vehicles (Chrysler and Morris) battled a bit getting down the Wairau Valley, we had a few stops and got home about 4.30pm. Good weekend, thanks Elaine & Pat for your company.

A big thank you to Tom Griffin for installing the Vesta clock in our garage at Shantytown. It was originally from Schaefs Garage and donated to the Branch by Micos some time ago and after sitting in the corner of our meeting room for I don’t know how long, it is now on display in our garage. Tom built a cabinet for it to sit on and created an information board, on its history.
