T

his year has given me an entirely new grasp on the word hustle. In late Spring, the VintageKC office was uprooted and we moved into a swank new spot in The Bauer building. At the same time, I was working double time on production for this issue, visiting my trainer regularly before sunrise, volunteering for speaking engagements, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and more local events than I ever have before. I was able to take multiple trips with my friends, but came right back to the grind. I have become quite the “yes man” in 2016. Part of my New Year’s resolution (yes I still make those) was to worry less and smile more. It was to take a deep breath and push on. It was to relax when the going got tough—and to say yes more, even when I thought I might need a 25th hour in the day to complete everything. Saying yes more meant more hustle, but ultimately, at the end of the year there will be much higher goals met because of it. If I’ve learned anything from my personal trainers, it’s that progress comes at the exact moment you want to stop. But if you push a little harder, a little further, you can do great things! And because of the hustle of so many hard-working people in this city, this fashion issue is filled with great things. These pages are filled with more fashion than we’ve ever had. We pushed the envelope, and stretched the boundaries like never before—and I’m beyond grateful for everyone who hopped on board and hustled with me. I’m thankful for our local designers, like featured designer Nataliya Lucia Meyer, who believes in fashion and creates it daily in the heart of this wonderful city. Some of the best hair and makeup teams and photographers sacrifice their time and talents to make this issue unique and impactful on the Kansas City fashion community. In the past four years I’ve worked with countless models. I watched their careers form, from fresh faces to seasoned veterans, and I love being a part of that story. We hand-selected local shops for this issue who share our love of vintage fashion and handmade items. I’m so thankful for their partnership in this publication, especially since our ideas may be trendy, but not always mainstream. Every issue is a journey. From concept to inspiration to pulling looks and handcrafted pieces to hair and makeup to models killing poses to moments being captured through a lens, every page in this issue tells the story of that journey, and it’s one that I’m grateful to tell. For the love of fashion, and hustle.

On Grant This 1970s-era souvenir shirt is from one of the first Hospital Hill Runs in Kansas City. Cable & Company actually received a cease and desisted order from the organization since they thought the store was printing the shirts. After clarifying it was an original vintage find, the organization congratulated the owners on a cool find.

On Augustin This 1980s era army issue t-shirt had some flair someone added along the way. It looks like it was a print from something else that was cut out and sewed onto the shirt.

Table for Four A

dinner party for four doesn’t have to be intimidating. A $100 budget can allow for a three-course meal including a signature cocktail and flowers for the table. Impress your guests with an easy fall whimsical tablescape and a vintage inspired menu. Here are a few tips for you to create a perfect vintage inspired dinner party for four in your home this fall.

entree tip

Choosing pasta for the main course is a wonderful way to stay on budget! Bacon provides an inexpensive protein, while using pappardelle for the type of pasta is an effortless way to elevate the dish.

place setting

A trick to remember which side the knife and fork go on is that the utensil and the side it goes on have the same number of letters. Such as: FORK goes on the LEFT and KNIFE goes on the RIGHT.

floral design If doing the flowers yourself, find room in your fridge. Pre-arrange a few small arrangements and place in the fridge overnight. Take them out a few hours before your dinner so they have time to open up. Remember to cut each stem at an angle to help the flower soak up the most water. The seeded eucalyptus can be laid out on the table over night.

signature cocktail Slice whatever fruit garnish you’re using as a circle to create a pleasing design in the punch bowl.

menu & name cards

Menus and name cards are an effortless way to make your guests feel special. Maggie Hirschi Designs developed and designed the pieces to match the whimsical theme of the evening and the woodsy tablescape.

first course

A salad for the first course is filling as well as easy for the host! As a great make-ahead recipe, you can do it all the night before to refrigerate; just wait to drizzle the dressing until serving. A cute vintage touch is to put them in teacups!

tablescape

Keep the table design low to allow for conversation between guests. Laying down seeded eucalyptus between floral arrangements creates a sense of the outdoors with a woodsy fall aroma, while connecting the design.

dessert

Rum Cake only uses about one cup of Rum so the rest can be used for the cocktails that evening! A fun way to modernize the vintage recipe is to make individual mini cakes for each guest.

DINNER PARTY HOW-TO Since this whimsical dinner party had a woodsy theme, we chose 1960s and 1970s vintage clothing to fit the feel. When selecting your own dinner party attire, take a hint from the invitation. A casual affair lends itself more to short, simple dresses, denim and un-tucked button-down shirts. For a more formal party, try longer dresses with beading or lace; and for men, slacks with tucked button-downs in gray, black or white.

KANSAS CITY DESIGNER

Nataliya Lucia Meyer VKC: Why/when did you start designing? Nataliya: I have been drawing designs as long as I can remember. When I was little, instead of watching television my mother would give me a pencil and paper—so I drew, all the time. I started using a sewing machine when I was 8 years old, making things and altering clothes to get a different fit or look. My first fashion show was the West 18th Street Fashion Show in 2009. After that I could say out loud that I am a fashion designer. VKC: What is your design history? Nataliya: I earned my degree in fashion design, pattern making, and tailoring way back in Ukraine. After that, I perfected my craft, working under various master tailors and doing lots of research. VKC: Where has designing taken you (geographically and in terms of success)? Nataliya: The most important thing about designing is that it makes me very happy. It’s hard work, and I work long hours, but I am so very happy doing it. The community in Kansas City has been very welcoming of my new business, Lucia’s Sarto, west of The Plaza. I looked at lots of locations, but the space at 4808 Bellview Avenue ended up being perfect for me. The services I offer at the shop vary from high-end design all the way through tailoring and dry cleaning service. VKC: What inspires you? Nataliya: I am truly inspired by everything. I have hundreds of designs constantly rotating in my mind; they're just waiting to be born. VKC: What is recognizable about the Lucia's Sarto label? Nataliya: My label is known for its intricacies of work and complicated designs. I love details and anything that takes hours of work beading, it brings so much light to the clothing. I also enjoy mixing texture; my bead work may consist of something really shiny and something really dull. I love big impres-

sive things—almost theatrical—which is why I've chosen this fall’s Kansas City Fashion Week collection to be bridal. This season you will see big gowns, lots of illusion mesh and lace. I’ve always felt the human body was beautiful, so I add lots of body-conscious details. I love reading the human behind the clothes and making clothing an extension of their character.

VKC: Why Kansas City? Nataliya: My dad brought me to Kansas City about 14 years ago. I love how enriched the city is with various art programs and amazing human beings. Kansas City has a unique market and I think fate placed me here perfectly. I met my wonderful husband here and it's a wonderful place to raise a child. I've traveled lots of places, but Kansas City is my home, I can feel it.
