CAN YOU IMAGINE a more satisfying Antiquexploration than at one of those fabled country house auctions of the past, where you were invited to bid on the contents of attics and cellars – contents which hadn’t been seen, some of them, for hundreds of years? That tantalising mix of the magnificent and the mundane, the trumpeted treasure and the hidden gem? Sadly such events are rare beasts these days, so I confess I got rather excited to hear that Bonhams was holding just such a sale on 1st December at Hooton Pagnell Hall in Yorkshire, home of the Warde family for 300 years. Bought in 1681 by a former Lord Mayor of London, it has been the family’s home ever since. Just imagine it, 300 years of collecting, now on offer to the public for the first time! You can see just a few of the many Hooton Pagnell charmers up for auction pictured on our cover but I confess that it’s the contents of the big house’s library that would always draw me first. I’m one of those sad people (and there’s a lot of us) who unconsciously find themselves drifting over to peruse the contents of the bookshelves whenever they enter a friend’s home for the first time. It’s there we feel we really belong. And I long ago decided that, while we can’t all have a stately home, we can all aspire to something of a stately library – or at least a stately library corner: a thing of old wood, old leather, old books, familiar pictures and eccentric collections and enthusiasms. In my youth, I even adopted a self-declared “Sherlock Holmes study” style for my former, tiny, home. But as my book-buying addiction grew, ever-more piles of books led to ever-more bookshelves, and ever-more bookshelves pushed out most of the other antiques and necessaries of life, until my house became less a home than a “book depository with bed, cooking facilities and small garden attached” – at which point it was time to move on! The hankering is still there though, as you will see in our feature on The Gentleman’s Library. Of course you don’t have to stick to the Victorian era (Sherlock didn’t) and I can imagine a really wonderful Art Deco library fitted out with Charles Schneider chandeliers and reading lamps. I must confess that his name was a new one on me before I got chatting with Belgian glass dealer Tiny Esveld, this issue’s guest in our Meet the Collector spot. For her own personal collection, Tiny has remained impressively disciplined in designating three cabinets and no more for her select groupings of Charles Schneider glassware. As a consequence, over the years her collection grows finer, rather than larger. A lesson that perhaps I, watching my bookshelves fill to overflowing once again, should take to heart! Perhaps the answer to indulging the collecting bug without crowding yourself out of house and home is to ensure other people are the beneficiaries of your good taste. Why not exercise your antiquing passions with the inspiring gift guide in this issue – and then double your fun by selecting the lucky recipients of your largesse from among your friends and family?

ROWING UP in Belgium, Tiny Esveld was always attracted to beautiful things. She loved collecting antiques and she loved her job restoring old houses. Then, at 36, she hurt her back and needed to look for a new career. She had started collecting antique glass four years earlier; now she began dealing in it – and today her enduring passion for its vibrant, fragile beauty is palpable. Of course it is difficult to be a collector while also being a dealer – the opportunities to buy are so great that you can end up buried under beautiful things. But while Tiny deals in the whole spectrum of Art Nouveau and Art Deco glass, she found a personal focus for her collection in a single maker who is not as famous as she thinks he should be. “In the beginning you don’t know what is good or special and what isn’t. You buy too much – sometimes bad things because you don’t know how to discriminate. This

Charles Schneider glass

Above: Three coupes displaying the innovative variety of colour and decoration. Below and below right: Adventurous colour combinations from 1920-22. New shapes and colours poured from Charles Schneider’s inventive brain so, even though production was relatively short-lived, it produced incredible variety

you learn with the years that pass. But when you sit in front of your collection you see after a while what attracts you most. And for me it was the beautiful colours and shapes of Charles Schneider vases.” If you know a little about glass, the first sight of a Charles Schneider vase would tell you it’s French – Daum or Gallé perhaps? And you’d certainly be on the right track. Of an Alsace-Lorraine family (a region that swapped between Germany and France due to war), both Charles, born near Paris, and his older brother Ernest worked at the Daum factory before the Great War in the great days of Art Nouveau. But then they struck out on their own as Societé Anonyme des Verreries Schneider in 1913. The coming of the Great War and conscription the following year threatened to end things before they had begun but in 1917 the brothers were demobbed to supervise the making of medical glass for the war effort. After the war ended, a lucrative line in commercial drinking glasses ran alongside Charles’ passion for art glass, for which he was

www.antiquexplorer.com www.vintagexplorer.co.uk

virtually the factory’s sole designer. From his Daum training, Charles had learned all aspects of glass techniques. Now he set out to bring high class art glass to a much wider market via editions sold through the art sections of the great French department stores. And he pioneered an innovative style departure from the flowing Art Nouveau of Daum and Gallé. Later dubbed Art Deco (after 1925’s turning-point Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, where much Schneider glass was on display), at the time the style was less a narrow orthodoxy than an eclectic embracing of the lessons of the past and enthusiasm for the future. Not least in Charles’s wonderful electric light chandeliers, including those featuring his favourite bright, distinctive orange called ‘Tango’, which speaks instantly of the Jazz Age. Throughout the 1920s, department stores stocked Charles Schneider’s innovative designs under the trade names Le Verre Français or Charder for his acid-etched

glass vases, with the Schneider name reserved for his other glass designs. With schoolteacher sister Ernestine helping Ernest with the marketing, the factory even began to export to America and the workforce grew to 500 – until the Wall Street Crash laid the business low. For Charles Schneider it had been a brief decade of glory – but it left a wonderful legacy. “The first Charles Schneider vase I bought, I remember very well because my mother called me crazy,” recalls Tiny. “It cost a fortune – a month’s salary in those days! It was a Le Verre Français vase with foxgloves and it had a beautiful shape. Both my parents were puzzled that glass could be so expensive, so they were surprised and pleased five years later when I told them I had sold it for twice the price.” Glass can be a good investment, then? “Well it can,” says Tiny, “But you should always buy with your heart.” Alongside her business, over the years Tiny’s own personal collection of Charles Schneider glass also grew. “I could happily have collected every vase Schneider made, but one day I made a promise to myself that the collection wouldn’t take over my house! I decided it should not go outside the three cabinets I had provided for the collection and, by limiting myself and setting my sights high, the collection grew slowly but even more pleasurably. Gradually, as you learn more, you find that when you eliminate the lesser things, what is left becomes more beautiful and harmonious.” Tiny’s collection now specialises in the smaller Schneider series rather than the more widely sold beautiful and often very large Le Verre Françaises. She loves the vibrant Vases Bijoux: “They are so small that they don’t take up much room and you can put a lot on one shelf – let oneself go!” At the other end of the scale the Intercalaire vases of coloured motifs trapped between layers of clear glass, “are so rare that if you posses one or two, you may count yourself very lucky. It is like you have a Rembrandt among your vases.” She also collects glass fruit as well as fruit bowls and the 8 November-December 2015 Antiquexplorer

Charles Schneider brought to book Many items from Tiny’s collection feature in the upcoming Charles Schneider: French art deco glass, which she wrote with Marie-Christine Joulin, who shares her intensity of passion, though mainly for the Le Verre Français line. Scheider’s colours, Marie-Christine says vividly, are, “so flamboyant that they seem to have not yet grown cold” from the furnace. “In 2004 Marie-Christine and her husband Gerold published the definitive collectors’ book on all the patterns made by Le Verre Français,” explains Tiny. “They were already working on it when Gerold first invited me see their own collection at their home in Germany – I was very impressed! “Of course new discoveries have been made since 2004 so we decided to join forces on this new book that displays patterns not known before. And it still doesn’t end – we are certain that new vases will pop up and surprise us all!” One discovery they made in the Schneider archives was that a distinctive pattern at the top or near the bottom of the vase often referred to as honeycomb or bubbles, actually references a pattern of stone in vogue at the turn of

the 20th century and used in many facades – including the 1908 train station in Epinay-sur-Seine where Schneider lived. “His designs incorporated things from the daily life he saw around him,” says Tiny, “as was confirmed by his granddaughter Marie-Therese Schneider when we met her last summer in Paris. She said Charles Schneider was always drawing and inventing new shapes and patterns even in old age and this is how he should be remembered: as the great inventor of French art deco glass.” Contact Tiny via www.tinyesveld. com for price and publication details. www.antiquexplorer.com www.vintagexplorer.co.uk

A GOLDEN GLOW While Tiny has to keep all her fragile vases securely tucked away in glass cabinets, some of her Charles Schneider glass is out in use just as it was designed to be. From the moment they struck out on their own, Charles and his brother were pioneers in the new technology of electric lighting for the home, and these light fittings bring the unique Scheider genius into Tiny’s living space and make Charles a constant presence in her daily life: “What a delight it is to admire the lamps, so dazzling with colour in the darkness of my living room.”

stemmed dishes named Coupes Bijoux, whose violet bases set off the vibrancy of the colours above. “I look for exceptional colours and try to find every different shape made.” True to her vow, the collection is displayed in the three glass cabinets that she set aside for them. “This keeps the dust away more or less,” she explains, with cleaning with a moist cloth a once a year job only. “Because I’m always afraid I will break something. This is a job for when you are very relaxed and not in a hurry!” Some of her Charles Schnieder glass is put to use though – she also collects and uses the glorious lighting fixtures the factory made, “What a delight it is to admire the lamps, so dazzling with colour in the darkness of my living room,” she says. Tiny finds that her favourites inside the cabinets change with time. “Usually the last piece you bought is your fa10 November-December 2015 Antiquexplorer

vourite, because you have just bought it and you are still full of that enthusiasm. Then you come to your senses and see it more in perspective.” Her absolute favourite, though, is the crocus vase from 1924-5 that she features on the front cover of her new book. “It has everything – it is poetic, gentle in its colours, very difficult to make with the marquetry technique. And the crocus flower promises new life after the long cold winter, which I like as well.” And is there anything that her collection is missing; a Holy Grail she’s still looking for? “Yes, there are some pieces on my want list – but I can’t possibly tell you what they are, because then the price will double!”

“How well I know what I mean to do/When the long dark autumn-evenings come,” wrote Robert Browning in his poem By The Fireside: I shall be found by the fire, suppose. O’er a great wise book as beseemeth age, While the shutters flap as the cross-wind blows And I turn the page, and I turn the page, Not verse now, only prose!

The inspirational objects pictured here may be more suited to the pockets of a full-on Lord Grantham (before he made his unwise investments) but the watchwords of library style are “Practical” and “Pleasurable” so, with a little ingenuity, the look can be quite easily adapted for any budget or home. IS THERE ANY more comforting thought than sitting, deep in a book, with one’s slippered feet up on the library fender perhaps, away from the winter’s chill and with the cheering prospect of putting the book down in a hour or so and summoning the footman to take tea and crumpets from a silver platter? Is there, to be frank, any more enticing thought at any time of year than being in one’s own cosy, booklined study, surrounded by familiar objects and the enticing, unfamiliar prospects offered by each fresh volume on the shelves? Forget about foreign holidays: “There is no Frigate like a Book/To take us Lands away,” wrote another poet, Emily Dickinson. Call it a library, call it a study, call it a home office, call it a man-cave (or, indeed woman-cave, why not?) – creating a thoughtful refuge from the hurly-burly of modern hustle, which you share only with the company of great minds from the past, is where the Antiquexplorer really comes into his or her own. Even if the rest of the house is awash with family life and modernity, behind one door, at least, all is calm.

Just suit yourself and keep it cosy! Big-brained types might like to think Sherlock (Victorian or modern version) to evolve their own, more personalised study style to suit their budget. You may not stretch to Chippendale, but the current affordability of everyday “brown furniture” puts good, solid pieces within the reach of everyone these days. And the eminently functional designs that have developed over centuries of library use can make this style a practical choice, even for smaller homes. Imagine a studio flat, for instance, where a day bed becomes the real thing at night; a secretaire encompasses not only books and home office but (secretly) underwear and electrical gadgets as well. With a deep-buttoned chair and perhaps a flat screen TV where the hunting scene would once have gone, over the fireplace, what more does one need for a civilised existence? Perhaps a little Pembroke table with a convenient, laptop-size drawer, which can

serve as desk when you’re alone, and as card- or tea-table as when a visitor comes to perch on your metamorphic chair (see page 17). Of course, if you have the luxury of endless space and deep pockets, you can just go wild – the sky’s the limit and the library is the licensed playground of the hoarder, ahem, collector. Enthusiasms and obsessions of all kinds have traditionally been housed in the library, celebrated in art, objets and, of course, books. Ah yes, books. If you are designing a library, do make sure you leave room for some books. You may laugh – surely that doesn’t need saying? But I was once shown round a lovely New England hotel by its proud owner who was very insistent we all come and admire “The Library”. Which we did – its comfortable sofas were wonderfully squashy, its wallpaper elegant and its shiny steel coffee-making machine was hissing away merrily to make us welcome but... nary a book! Ah well, perhaps it was one of those new-fangled bring-your-own-Kindle libraries...

Wise advice for His Nibs (or Hers!) YOU’LL WANT TO write elegantly in your classy library, which means you’re going to want a fountain pen that lives up to your surroundings. But what should you look for? There’s no one better to ask for advice than Chris Robinson of Vintage Fountain Pens Inc, who’s obviously in love with her subject: “Each vintage pen carries a life story,” she explains. “From the worker in the pen factory to its first owner, and then over the years to its current owner. And the words written by it form part of our social history.” So if you plan on dipping a toe into this inky river of time, where should you start? By buying the best you can currently afford: “Condition is key.” Poor quality pens are a waste of money, as are damaged ones – unless you want to get into the restoration business yourself. Though if you already own a damaged fountain pen, it may have some value to someone looking for spares or to learn how they function and how to fix them. Next, advises Chris, “If you’re buying an unrestored pen, take a magnifier. Look for cracks in the cap or barrel. Is the gold nib broken or twisted at the tip? Is the filling lever broken? Is the pen engraved? (Personalisation generally detracts from value.) Take a view

on its overall condition before making the purchase.” Obviously such close scrutiny isn’t possible if you’re buying online, so she’d say stick to a well-known specialist site that offers information and after-sales service, and don’t just be seduced by a pretty picture. If you want your vintage pen for general use – and perhaps to pass on to future generations – Chris advises long-standing famous names such as Parker, Waterman, Conway Stewart and Swan. Looking for a long-term investment? In the current market – for both vintage and modern pens – she says, “Look for precious metal overlays, limited editions or classic models from a particular era. Read up on the subject. There are specialist publications and sales archive information on the best websites to help beginners.” If you get hooked – and Chris knows what that’s like! – and want to start your own vintage fountain pen collection, she advises staying focused. Collectors in all fields tend to take a scatter-gun approach at first, specialising as time goes on. “Better to focus on a particular manufacturer, model, period, colour, filling system or limited editions. You can widen your scope later.”

A step in the right direction WHEN THE Indisposition of rock ’n’ roll legend Keith Richards delayed the start of the Rolling Stones’ European tour in 1998, the one cause you might not have guessed at was that he had fallen from a ladder in his library. But such was indeed the case – and it revealed to the world the rocker’s love of books and reading. “When you are growing up there are two institutional places that affect you most powerfully,” he said. “The church, which

belongs to God. And the public library, which belongs to you. The public library is a great equaliser.” The private library needs something a little more elegant than the local council’s rolling Kik-Step, though, and the ingenuity with which designers have tried over the centuries to negotiate the business of accessing books above headheight has to be seen to be appreciated. From the basic ladder, simple or fancy, to

the portable staircase, straight or spiral, you pays your money and you takes your choice. The metamorphic chair, a clever invention of the mid-18th century, is still in production today and is another multifunctional library antique that would be a practical addition to the modern home. As with any antique library steps though, check they are fit for modern use first before you start to climb – remember Keith Richards!

Meet Mr Hogarth Ladies and Gentlemen, Tamlyns would like to introduce you to Mr Hogarth. Well, that is the name given by the vendors to this beautifully carved, near life-size, late 19th/early 20th century articulated artist’s mannequin. He will be coming up for auction at the Bridgwater auctioneers on the 24th November when they will be hosting the first of their new combined Specialist Antiques and 20th Century Design sales. Also in the same sale will be the fantastic leather armchair shown here, which has seen plenty of use and has tons of character. The oil painting by Donald McIntyre is one of many works of art in the sale. There’s also an exciting lighting section which will showcase a feast of retro designs. Auctions are a place to find a whole manner of unique, weird and wonderful items and Tam-

lyns say they would welcome consignments with similar character. They are particularly wellknown for their quarterly Collectors Sales which attract a loyal worldwide clientele. If you have any similar items – the kookier the better – get in touch and they will be happy to consider them for entry into one of the future sales. Welsh auctioneers win national award At the annual Autumn Forum of the National Association of Valuers & Auctioneers in Oxford recently, Peter Francis walked off with the award for Fine Art & Antiques Auction House of the Year for 2015. At the awards dinner the evening prior to the Forum, the Carmarthen auctioneers were shocked to receive the accolade after having entered only a few weeks beforehand. Principal of the firm and Managing Director Nigel Hodson, a fellow NAVA, expressed his gratitude to the assembled audience and added that Peter Francis himself, the former Senior Partner of the firm who died in 1992, would have been very proud. He also remarked that such recognition from peers in the industry was a just reward for all the hard work the staff and valuers in the salerooms consistently put in. When interviewed later he stated how important he felt professional qualification in the industry was, as a means of protecting the interests of clients.

Having won the Novice Auctioneer of the Year Award twice in the last six years with different trainees, Peter Francis was justifiably proud of this significant further award, which recognises its continued efforts to maintain the high standards of service. www.peterfrancis.co.uk

Bright, Sparks and McCarthy Celebrating 25 years in business this year, UKauctioneers.com is the UK’s first and original auction portal website, and it’s just got bigger! The site attracts more than 50,000 visits each month, giving collectors and dealers the world over access to a vast database of items, allowing them to browse and bid from any place at any time. Now incorporating live bidding, they’re able to offer a comprehensive package to meet the needs of every auction house. This has been thanks to the addition of two experienced businessmen with a passion for the trade, Lawrence Bright and Mike Sparks – both were previously involved in the development of the-saleroom.com. “I’m delighted to have joined the team at UK Auctioneers as Sales Director and look forward to helping increase our growth. Having worked on both sides of the industry for the last 20 years, I hope my experience will bring a balanced understanding of the

needs and challenges facing auctioneers. We have lots of development in the making, and Mike and I are very much looking forward to getting out on the road and sharing these plans with all our customers.” said Lawrence Bright. But it all began with Eileen McCarthy, who started out producing catalogues for a number of auction houses as a publisher, and launched a supplementary website to give added value to her clients. News of the website spread fast, and after receiving numerous phone calls from potential clients requesting to be featured on this pioneering auction-portal, UKauctioneers.com was born. With the launch of the brand new, fully optimised website, UKauctioneers continue to strive to be the best auction portal on the market, offering a great value solution for auction houses and collectors alike, with the added bonus of a personal touch. www.ukauctioneers.com

Calling the next Witness He was a recluse who held his trousers up with a length of string but when his dilapidated cottage was sold following his death, the new owners renovating the property found one of the most valuable cameras of its day. Now, some 60 years later, the precision 35mm Ilford Witness rangefinder, one of an estimated 350 ever made, is a rarity highly sought after by collectors. When new, it cost over £120. Cheshire auctioneers Peter Wilson expect bids of £2,0003,000 when it is offered in a two-day sale on 25th and 26th November. The family selling it said the North Wales cottage had been cleared of nearly all its contents before they purchased it, but on taking possession, they found that an old lawnmower, some furniture with the label ‘please leave’ attached to it, some crockery, a pair of binoculars and the camera, had been left behind. Two years later while watching highlights of the Antiques Roadshow on TV, they saw a camera similar to the one they had nearly discarded, and were amazed at the expert’s valuation. Dating from about 1953, the camera with a Dallmeyer Super-Six lens will be sold with its carry bag, instruction book, sky light filter,

a tall collapsible metal tripod, an old film and a Paterson wet film developing tank. After restoration, it will be ready to snap away again. Camera connoisseurs reckon the Witness is equal, if not superior, to the Leica cameras of the same era. It was designed in 1945/47 by two German-Jewish refugees: ex-Leitz employee Robert Sternberg and ex-Zeiss employee Werner Julius Rothschild, incorporating the best of both the Leica and Zeiss Ikon Con-

tax rangefinder cameras. It went into production in 1953 but sales were slow. Few people could afford the high cost and soon Ilford switched to less complex, lower priced cameras, ceasing production of the Witness the same year. Survivors are extremely rare – the original red metal ring bound instruction booklets can fetch up to £100 alone. www.peterwilson.co.uk

Poole Pottery auctions move to... Poole Cottees Auctions of Wareham will be holding their final sale of Poole Pottery at their East Street premises before they move to Poole in the new year. “Cottees began their dedicated Poole Pottery auctions about 30 years ago” said John Condie, auctioneer at Cottees, “and without doubt the auctions are regarded as the biggest Poole sales in the country. Over the years we have sold just about every example of Poole around! One of my biggest finds was a massive vase in a flat above a shop in Swanage. It sold for a record breaking £16,000.” The auction on the 14th November will consist of 350 lots including some excellent studio pieces,

but everything from the early Carters days right through to the final Living Glaze period will be represented. “It will be quite sad when we bring the hammer down for the final time in November, but we are looking forward to re-opening in Poole where one of the features of the new saleroom will be a fine permanent exhibition of Poole Pottery to rival the collection that used to be at the pottery itself.” The lots will be on view on Friday 13th November from 10am to 4pm and on the morning of the sale from 8.30am. www.cottees.co.uk

Four rare Gallantry Awards In a year that marks both the Centenary of WWI and the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII, an auction house will sell a collection of medals that includes four exceptionally rare gallantry awards. Set to come under the hammer at Cuttlestones’ Specialist Collectors’ Sale at Wolverhampton Auction Rooms on Friday 6th November, the twelve medals all hail from a single private collection and will be split into five lots forming part of a very impressive medals and militaria section. For example, the gallantry awards featured include a WW1 era military cross carrying an estimate of £300-400, and a George V1 military medal which is estimated at £800-1,200.

The collection also includes two group lots – firstly a WW1 military medal group of four – consisting of a military medal, a 1914/15 star, a British War medal and Victory military medal which is expected to fetch between £500-700, and also a Sudan medal group of five. These lots and more are expected to cause a real stir among serious medal collectors and those with an interest in military history, as Cuttlestones’ Medals and Coins specialist, Adrian Simmons, explains: “Gallantry medals are pretty rare things on the market – they were awarded, often posthumously, for acts of great bravery in the face of adversity, so many families choose to keep them as heirlooms and reminders of the heroism of

family members, and those that do come onto the market are snapped up quickly by collectors.” The full sale catalogue will be available to view online from 30th

October with commission, live internet and telephone bidding options available for those unable to attend on the day. www.cuttlestones.co.uk

Oriental Treasures Lawrences’ recent auction of Decorative Arts, Ceramics & Glass comprised of lots spanning some 500 years and there were great results achieved in all sections of the 240 lots on offer. Two highlights in the group of Oriental items included £5,490 for a Chinese yellow jade carved tiger, the size of a thumb tip! There was also a terrific surprise for the seller

of a Chinese bronze censer that was sold with a turquoise dish. This had been bought for £50 at a market and returned him a substantial profit when it sold at auction for £25,000 and led the day! Two pieces of Lalique glass also did well. An opalescent plate in the ‘Ondine’ design showed five nymphs swimming around a cen-

tral vortex and made £1,580 while a spherical vase in the ‘Druides’ design showed leaves and berries and realised £1,640. A Martin Brothers vase from the 1890s more than doubled expectations to take £2,070 and a small Arts & Crafts glass roundel by Agnes Bankier Harvey (1874-1947), dated 1901, made £790. www.lawrences.co.uk

This tiny Chinese jade tiger fetched £5,490. The Chinese bronze censer above, was bought for £50 at a market, and sold for £25,000 at auction! www.antiquexplorer.com www.vintagexplorer.co.uk

By Karyn Sparks ONCE AGAIN I’m following in my tradition of buying each member of the family something old – be it for their Birthday or Christmas – how could I not? It’s great seeing that look of amazement, and sometimes bewilderment on their faces, and there’s always a story to tell, which you never ever get with a mundane gift set. Can you remember what you were bought last year? I rest my case! Luckily for you, all the items featured on the following pages are currently for sale, and even if they have sold by the time January comes around, it will hopefully bring you some inspirational gift ideas. The point is, that with a little imagination, something unusual can be found for most members of the family, the cost is generally cheaper than the High Street and to top it all, you can guarantee you won’t be doubling up with another family member!

Jason Clarke Antiques carries a range of quality and distinctive pieces which are sourced for their design interest, historical provenance and unique qualities. With most pieces hailing from the late 18th and early 19th centuries they reflect the golden age of the Country House style. Library and drawing room furniture and accessories are a speciality with everything from sumptuous upholstered armchairs and outstanding mahogany furniture to decanter sets and curious decorative pieces. Jason has recently gained a Master’s Degree in antiques, passed with

distinction, from the University of Central Lancashire. His research study was the history of the library, its changing usage, and the furniture that it contained – special attention was given to the library chair. So you can be assured that his wonderful stock is sourced with a passion for the history of design and a love of provenance. Jason says that however small, each of his items has a story to tell. www.jasonclarkeantiques.co.uk

WITNEY OXFORDSHIRE TV antiques expert and well-known author Judith Miller will officially open the autumn selling exhibition, ‘The Gentleman’s Library’, at W.R. Harvey & Co, 86 Corn Street, Witney at 3pm on Saturday, 7th November. Judith is known as an antiques expert and the co-founder of Miller’s Antiques Price Guide. She has written more than 100 books and appears regularly on radio and television. Says David Harvey from W.R. Harvey Antiques: “It is a pleasure and a privilege to welcome Judith to open the exhibition. She will be talking about the exhibition and recounting anecdotes from her life in the world of antiques. I am immensely looking forward to the occasion.” The exhibition will provide a fascinating insight into the lifestyle of the Gentleman in the classic period of English cabinetmaking – the late 17th, 18th and early 19th century as glimpsed through the furniture and accoutrements in his inner sanctum – the library. David added: “These pieces have been sourced over the past year, each being a fine example of their kind and will greatly appeal to anyone looking to furnish their home with truly www.antiquexplorer.com www.vintagexplorer.co.uk

everlasting examples of fine English cabinetmaking.” Among many eye-catching items will be a superb George III period ‘breakfront’ library bookcase attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London. Constructed in 11 mahogany and satinwood sections for transportation and priced at £150,000, David Harvey describes this as one of the most superb pieces he has ever had the pleasure to offer for sale. A fine and useful desk bureau will be perfect for the private home office. Made from oak and decoratively inlaid with crossbandings of oak and holly, the desk is fitted with numerous drawers and compartments, it also has the requisite secret compartments! Dating from around 1740, the reign of George II, it is priced at £3,300. An elegant and very practical partner’s desk, constructed from mahogany and dating from around 1830, the George IV period, would grace any Chairman’s office or Chief Executive’s home office. Priced at £12,500, the desk will easily provide service for another two hundred years. A necessity in any library is a reading table, and the exhibition provides

a fine example in mahogany from the Regency period, c.1810. Fully adjustable it is the perfect accompaniment for the viewing of rare tomes. It is priced at £3,750. The exhibition will feature other Georgian, Regency and earlier furniture and accessories. It is open to the public until 29th November.

Dennis Chinaworks create exquisite handmade ceramics. Founded by Sally and Richard Dennis in 1993, the pottery is run from the converted stables of a Victorian Gothic rectory in Shepton Beauchamp. Sally established her professional name – Sally Tuffin – in fashion design in the 1960s, and is now working with her son Buchan and team: Vanessa, Theresa, Natasha and Adam. Every year they introduce new designs for the company’s decorative pottery, often in limited editions. The shape of the pots changes continually, becoming more original and adventurous to reflect the intricacy and uniqueness of the designs. Visitors will again be treated to wonderful displays showing off a variety of themes from ancient Chinese to 60s retro and country farmhouse. In fact demand for stands is so high that the organisers have added an extra date in April making three fairs a year. From such a large selection of exhibitors,

DCAF’s last Antiques, Vintage & Collectors Fair for 2015 will be at The Matford Centre, Exeter on Saturday 12th December. According to Tina Bennett, the Event Manager for DCAF, this event has proved to be very popular with the dealers during 2015: “We have seen our bookings rise steadily over the last 12 months with the outside pitches becoming very popular again, which is fabulous news for both us and our visitors, we are also very impressed with our exhibitors who not only continue to support this event but also with all the time and effort they put into finding their amazing stock, as well as promoting the fairs.” If you are looking something unique for your home or someone special then you can’t go wrong at this wonderful event as you will find some of the most amazing pieces of upcycled, Vintage/Mid-century Modern and Antique furniture, alongside beautiful paint-

ed screens, spinning wheels, vintage fabrics and soft furnishing. You will also see some of the most exquisite jewellery on sale as well as silver, Teddy bears, clothing and many more antiques and collectables to suit all pockets. DCAF’s Antiques, Collectables & Vintage Fair at RHS Gardens Rosemoor in Devon, has also proved to be such a success that there have been waiting lists for dealers for the last two events. With only three fairs a year dealers are attracted from all over the country and therefore early booking is strongly advised for 2016. DCAF are keen to build on the success of the last 12 months and offer customer service and experience that is second to none for both exhibitors and visitors alike. Tina and the whole DCAF team would also like to wish Antiquexplorer readers a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. www.antiques-fairs.com November-December 2015 Antiquexplorer 39

SOLIHULL WEST MIDLANDS Sunday 22nd November is the date of the next National Glass Fair at its prestigious home, the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull. The organisers, Specialist Glass Fairs Ltd, are delighted to be able to announce that in addition to the great variety of quality glass offered for sale there will be lots of other things to tempt enthusiastic collectors. For example, in Hall 1 visitors will find an exhibition of carnival glass on loan from the Carnival Glass Society and in the foyer there will be a Christmas Table, with fabulous and fun glass decorations and gifts full

of the festive spirit for sale. With around 80 stands, the exhibitors include contemporary glass artists alongside specialists in all types and periods of glass, such as Roger Harris, selling beautiful Art Nouveau items; Nigel Benson, whose focus is on fabulous Scottish and Powell pieces; Rapparee Antiques, Athelny Townshend and Peter Adamson, all concentrating on Georgian drinking glasses and related items. There will be a good mix of antique, collectable and contemporary pieces at this

much-anticipated biannual event, from exquisite jewellery to paperweights and from whimsical animal figures to pressed glass etc. The fair will be open from 10.30am to 4pm, admission is £5 (accompanied children under 16 free of charge), parking is free and refreshments are available on the first floor. www.nationalglassfair.com

CARMARTHEN WALES Attractive and rare examples of late 18th and early 19th century copper coinage will be offered for sale at the next Carmarthen Antiques & Flea Market, just a short distance from where they were first spent. It will be a chance to get your hands on some sought after copper tokens made locally during a shortage of copper coinage which affected much of the United Kingdom. The market is on Sunday 8th November and is organised by Towy Events. Unofficial token pennies and halfpennies which were issued by local industrialists, merchants and bankers were needed as small change, as the Royal Mint's reluctance to commit itself fully to the provision of coinage in anything other than precious metals remained in force. Copper tokens like those made by the Morgan Ironworks in Carmarthen were used to pay wages to workers. The local shops in which these tokens were spent were often owned by the same industrialists who had issued the tokens forcing

workers to spend their pay with the company they worked for. The text on the edge of the Morgan halfpenny does however state ‘payable at London, Bristol and Carmarthen’ meaning this token could be used beyond the Welsh borders. They are arguably some of the finest examples of these tokens to be found. You’ll also find thousands of other interesting and unusual items on hundreds of stands both indoors and out. Admission is £4 for adults with accompanied children admitted free of charge. Carmarthen Showground is on the A40, a few minutes drive from the town. For exhibitors, all indoor pitches must be pre-booked while outdoor pitches are available on the day with set-up at 7.30am. The final Towy Events Antiques & Flea Market for this year is on Bank Holiday Monday, the 28th of December. Next year’s dates will be announced soon. You can follow Towy Events on Twitter @TowyEvents.
