SPONGESCAPE

Sponge-scape deals with the issue of rising water levels and contamination in Toronto’s context. It addresses the problem of storm-runoff mixing with sewage and emptying into the lake during large storms. The landscape i s designed to clean the water and help restore a natural ecosystem that is being destroyed through continued building up of Toronto’s waterfront. There are two different types of wetlands; the restorative wetlands aimed to clean lake and runoff water in order to fill the various pools and provide water for urban farming, and the wetlands facing the lake Ontario that act as sponges to soak up water during times of rising flood levels and other changes to the water landscape. These wetlands therefore provide a buffer to protect the urban and residential areas beyond while restoring a natural habitat for various plants and animals.

Masterplan of Ontario Place

The redesign of Ontario place consisted of a masterplanning portion and the design of a new recreational building. I was particularly interested in water’s role in filtration and how that can be applied to swimming pools . I set out to plan a complex of swimming pools unlike any in Toronto. I was hoping to create a set of swimming pools that were intergrated into the site. That aim extended into the design of the masterplan.

| 2018 Undergraduate Portfolio | 11

My design intended to flood Ontario Place and create a landscape that naturally filters water for the swimming pools and any other activities housed on the island. The masterplan also included an extension to the Waterfront trail to connect to the existing trail. From there piers would extend into the landscape much like the historic plan of Lake Ontario’s waterfront. The set of diagram above show the process of creating the new landscape front the original Ontario Place to the final design.

The pool complex is a series of competition, recreational and rejuvenation pools embedded within the wetland that cleans its waters. The individual experiences the water in many different ways whether it be the more usual setting of seeing a competition pool when sitting on the bleachers or descending into a wetland .

I tried to design the pool complex as being set into the landscape which means in the winter time the structure needs to be altered in order to accomodate use in the winter time. The diagrams above show how the building opens and closes based on the season. The building’s movement also informs the movement of the occupant where in the summer

people are meant to side, close to nature and ter when the structure is have clear circulation on

walk outin the winclosed they the interior.

The structure is also very light in order to maintain constant view of the landscpae that feeds the pool complex as can be seen in the rendering on the opposite page.

THE INTERFACE

The first industrial revolution was about automation and the death of craft, the second was a move toward digitization and isolation of the worker. With this project I wanted to figure out a way to merge these new digital tools with a new process of production, one focused on collaboration and education. The building is a hub for continual innovation through the promotion of communication between different demographics, small start-ups, students and creative residents all mingle and exchange ideas in this mixed use building. The building is seperated into two main sections: the podium which house the workshops, teaching spaces and offices and market. Then there are the towers, which are composed of 2 storey resiNight time Rendering dential units and tied together with semi-public floor that houses programs for the residents. The interface hinges on the idea

Exploded Layered Plan of Proposed Master Plan

The podium contains office spaces for start-ups firms that would rent it directly or through an educational program through York and Humber that would promote students to start their own businesses. These start-ups would have access to large commercial printers, CNC’s and a complete workshop that they would otherwise not be able to afford on their own. The two workshops form the anchor points of the building and are not only a necessity for those businesses, but is also an amenity that allows these startups to collaborate with other businesses in the building.

There would also be courses for afterschool and adult classes to learn how to use these technologies as well as design courses, closing the loop between digital and physical production. The classrooms would be smaller workshops where people culd learn about the technology as well as in the large workshops to restablish the idea of learning through mentorship and collective learning and producing.

Cross Section

The larst piece would be the residents that live in the towers above. The ideas of fostering new production and collaboration are extended to the living spaces. Each unit has a resiential space as well as a workshop on the floor above. The workshop floor also has communal living spaces in between each workshop for the residents to fill in as they wish. These units are meant to foster creativity an communication, since the residents would also be able to book the machinery in the larger workshop for free.

Finally, the market place, is a space where these businesses could set up booths or small shops to sell their products. It also works as a social basin where all the different people as well as other people from the neighbourhood could congreate. Overall the building combines all ages an creates an environment where people are free and encouraged to invent, collaborate, design and create.

ARTIST RESIDENCE

With this project I wanted to explore the nature of an artist’s studio in relationship to light and interaction between the artist, art and public. I wanted to create bright, open, almost luxurious spaces for artists to create and interact and therefore made the sleeping quarters quite compact. The idea is to seperate the art from the personal quarters so as to give the occupants space away from their art, a place to refresh.

2B Studio

This project is an exploration into the design of co-operative artist residences. The area around Lansdowne station is rich in arts culture. The site axonometric to the right shows the studios and other arts related spaces are in the surrounding area. Despite the large arts community, artists are being kicked out of their studio spaces by new companies buying up the real estate in the area.

Inside the artist brain is an effort to give the artist back their space and engage the community even further into the arts community. The project aims to increase public space in the 100person residence by combining the shared

living and dining with the studio spaces as well as designing gallery spaces as the main circulation throughout the building in order to allow people to see how artist work, to be engaged the artist’s though process, their brain.

Cross Section through studios and theater

The west facade, facing Lansdowne, becomes an extension of the gallery space. Artist exhibit their works in process or finished work for display to be seen from people walking on the street. Artists are given large studio spaces and shared living spaces in order to encourage social interaction.

The sleeping quarters, in comparison, are quite small. The goal is to allow people to spend most of their time in the open and bright studio and shared living space. The open multi-functional studio space is a reflection of the 21st century studio. The studio space is no longer about lone artist painting, but about interaction and the sharing of ideas.

PARKDALE MUSIC LIBRARY

The Parkdale design is a project that allowed me to explore how acoustics and architecture interact to create unique and evocative spaces. Since the area did not have many community spaces I centered the design on a multi-functional theater. Every space has a different acoustic function whether it is an open place for conversation, or quiet reading room or an acoustically optimal performance space. The library is meant to encourage and showcase the performance, appreciation and studying of music. That is why the performace stage is designed in order to be viewed from multiple angles, from the street and sidewalk, to the courtyrad space in the heart of the library to the canopy space of the library that surrounds the courtyard.

THE FOREST

The project is an exploration into how to create responsive, comfortable public spaces that promote healthy and social lifestyles. It is located in a widely used public plaza. The stepped seating underneath the shady canopy of the structure provides a place that people can enjoy all year long. The roof opens to allow light during colder seasons and closes to shade during the summer months, creating a place of respite during a long day. The pavilion not only responds to its environment but helps it thrive. As more people gather and air gets polluted the greenhouses shaped as twisted trunks open(shown in the diagram) and purify the air by ciculating oxygen and cleaning the air using filters that turn on when they sense the greenhouses’ movement. The purpose of this space is to create a public space that both promotes social interaction and helps the environment based on changing circumstances.

While working as an architectural intern at Erik Giudice Architects I was a part of the competition team where I procuced diagrams and orthographic drawings to illustrate the submission entry. Below are examples of diagrams that i created in oder to illustrate the shaping of the building’s form and the external factors that affectedthe design. The top image is an annotated section that shows the programmatic distribution of the buildings.

The Top left image is a rendering that shows the main street running between the north and south buildings analyzed in the diagrams below. The next page shows the renderings and elevations created for another project at EGA. The drawings were used for the conceptual development of the hotel lobby, restaurant, skybar and blackbox theater.

PERSONAL RENDERINGS

In addition to architecture my intersts include film and visual arts. On my own time I have experimented with rendering different materials and lighting conditions. The images on the right show the process of rendering the sculpture I modelled using Zbrush. During a case study of Pompeii I created reconstructions of prominents buildings like the buildings that make up the 2 forums, as well as the house of faun. Using maya to model, Keyshot to render and animate and After Effects to compile the presentation I created a series of walk-throughs through the city of Pompeii as it once was.

My interest in ornament led me to s tudy its uses from Roman times to the 20th century. I was fascinated with its beauty and storytelling power. Through researching and modelling my own versions I was trying to figure out how its fundamentals can be applied to current architecture. The models here are modelled in both Maya and Zbrush. The basic shapes were modelled in Maya and then exported into Zbrush to sculpt the details.

I designed an exhibition type space in Maya for these pieces to exhibit them in the surrounding that I thought was appropriate. I know that the type of ornament that I sculpted could not be applied to architecture today . But its ability to enrich the architecture by telling stories is something I try to accomplish through my own designs using contemporary design details. The images on the right show the reconstructions I modelled and walkthrugh animations for a case study researching Pompeii’s architecture and history.
