The Apiary seeks to refresh

an old identity for Salt Lake City by introducing a collaborative nursery that is entirely run and operated by the citizens of the city. By introducing a playful nursery as a machine of kinetic parts visitors to the site are encouraged to participate in the procurement and propagation of The Apiary’s plants.

The Time Square Heart is a new tradition every Valentine’s Day in Time Square to reinterpret the heart. Inspired by the Sweet Heart Candy, hidden Valentine’s messages twinkle on and off around a crystal heart. The irregular shaped heart acts as a register for a custom based photo

platform that uses technology similar to facial recognition to reveal different hidden messages as you move your camera around the heart. The heart is made of 126 cells of aluminum frames which will be flat packed and sent to backers who have funded the project to be reassembled into unique lamps.

To help fund the piece, there will be a kickstarter campaign. Each fo the 126 cells will have a detail to receive a standard hanging light fixture. These cells will be offered as individual cells or clusters to those who pledge to the project. Once the installation is taken down, each cell will be flat packed and shipped to the corresponding contributor. Contributors would also be able to sponsor various messages throughout the heart.

The O3 Tall Tower is a tower to combat ozone depletion by sending O3 via elevator to the ozone layer. The tower produces, and collects O3 at the Earth’s ozone to keep the ozone balanced and the Earth safe. The

tower operates as a permanent space elevator for space exploration and astronauts and also holds entire cities and ecologies, leaving the most of the world as a natural refuge.

The “We Are Flowers” Installation was designed specifically for the New York flagship Melissa Shoe store and inspired by the company moto: “We are flowers”. We wanted to carry the fun and organic forms of the shoe collection into the design. It was a technological and engineering challenge to design something that would be light and natural from the large scale of the store down to a

single pedal. The installation was made by laser cutting 20,000 flowers and an engineered mylar net that is made of over 4,000 unique pieces. We used Grasshopper to break down the parametric surface into individual parts small enough to be flat cut on a laser cutter and 15 volunteers and employees to assemble and erect the entire surface.

CONSIDERING THE QUAKE winter 2013 | built work | violet whitney, SOFTlab

Considering The Quake: Seismic Design on Edge was an exhibition hosted by the American Institute of Architects at the CFA in New York. Along with deigning the overall exhibition we also produced an interactive installation in collaboration with ARUP. This installation was a center piece of the exhibition that visualized the effects of an earthquake and some of the considerations that are taken into account while designing buildings in seismic regions. The two story sculpture invites visitors to create and adjust their own seismic

wave that wiggles the entire sculpture, tuning the installation to see various zones of resonance within a grid of pipes. Each pipe had a weight that was calibrated at various heights in a graph throughout the grid. These weights alter the natural period of the pipes so that as visitors adjusted the wave zones of wiggling pipes would move or dissipate as you find periods coincident with the various pipes. As with buildings during an earthquake, each pipe resonated at specific frequencies depending on the height of the weight.

THE OPEN HOUSE fall 2011 | studio III |instructor wendell burnette

The Open House is single-family dwelling designed specifically for a low income Harmon Neighborhood in south Phoenix. The project is a new residential prototype for modern transient culture on a budget. It is a shell of essential infrastructure,

leaving flexible space to morph gradually with its occupant. The house is made affordable by condensing the most expensive construction into small prefabricated modules, and prefabricating flat packed walls which can be quickly assembled on site.

In a high end retail space in SOHO, a cone of randomly scattered lights brings color and contrast to a polished white space. Using Rhino and Grasshopper to facilitate fabrication, unique shapes were milled out of aluminum and cords for lights were cut to specific lengths and spliced. I project managed a team of four for its

design and installation. Fabrication of the aluminum frame was done through Tietz-Baccon. Special circumstances for the project included, managing electrical power loads, assembly of sculpture with scaffolding in a tight location, and organizing the assembly and placement of 120 uniquely coordinated lights.

CLOUD

fall 2012 | competition winner | solo artist | budget:$3000 The Cloud project is a commissioned sculpture that explored a new and construction process. Beach balls were hung by pencils while the balls were coated in fiberglass and resin, and then layered in bondo for their amorphic geometries. Located in a plain atrium of a luxury apartment complex, The Cloud softens and

brightens a bland space which is the communal front door for many residents surrounding the atrium. The organically shaped sculptures sway freely, giving resident relief from the rigidity of the atrium’s flat stucco walls. This was my first permanent public art piece.

TAIWAN FACADE spring 2013 | interactive facade concepts | violet whitney, SOFTlab, and Pentagram

SOFTlab was asked to design a facade for an existing building in Taiwan. The client hoped to engage the monumental scale of the car and create something dynamic. I worked on the concept, design and graphics for three of the facade schemes. The idea was to create something that

could be constructed in a simple and standard way yet produce a result that is complex and unique. The scheme was broken into smaller section modules of the building to look at constructability.

TETO Park is a park for downtown Avondale, Arizona. Originally an underused park ridden with crime, the site is shared with an existing Boys & Girls Club, and is in much need of facilities that can be shared by the diverse community demographics as well be designed to minimize crime at the park. By using cubism to abstract sounds prevalent at the site, sculptural forms

are created which allow for flexibility and imagination to the people of Avondale. The un-prescriptive park allows for more impromptu activities, and allows the park to become what the people want it to be. A Teen Center sits behind the existing Boys & Girls Club, allowing for more security and creating transparency of activities of Avondale’s teenagers.

In a rural suburb outside of Tucson, Arizona, the common youngster walks past manicured golf courses and stucco tract homes to reach school. Here they will spend another 7 hours in a room with hardly any windows listening to a federal lesson plan. At the end of class, most students return home, wait indoors playing video games and watching television until their parents return home around 6:00 p.m.

The new elementary school is about using the natural desert landscape, currently ignored by the town, as an opportunity to engage students in a non-prescriptive lifestyle. Rather than waiting docilely for more lessons to force-fed, students are encouraged to figure things out through exploration, listening and questioning nature for answers.
