Grand Central: Intervention Spring 2014 Critic Athanasios Haritos

In the fast-paced environment of Grand Central Terminal, it is hard to get the full experience of the space. The objective of my intervention is to create a path that slows down ones movement and to make a path that refocus ones experience of Grand Central. At the climax, the path widens and changes in elevation to create a amphitheater where one has the opportunity to observe the bustling main concourse. One exits the path in the East Balcony by the means of stairs or an exciting slide.

Grand Central: Analysis Spring 2014 Critic Athanasios Haritos In Collaboration with: Cheuk Kei Hui

In our analysis of Grand Central, we studied circulation, ventilation and structure. To us, it is a place that houses the ever-changing energy and movement. So we were interested in the visible flows of people and invisible flow of air, and their relationship with structure. Structure plays a role in facilating theses flows. It is a constant element that create different paths. From understanding these different layers of Grand Central, we begin to get a better understanding of it as a whole.

First Street Green is a left over space that resulted from the urban tranformations on Houston Street. As a meanings of bringing together this awkwardly-shaped site, I used a folding element that contracts and expands according to site conditions and program. Specific places in the wall and the living space are able to expand and contract to enclose spaces depending onthe users needs.

WALL

We designed an enclosure for the First Street Park that partially masks the inside from Houston Street but also physically opens up the site towards Houston. The different density of the architectural elements creates various degrees of porosity that highlights more nuanced experiences of the site.

Mural Wall

Fall 2013 Critic Nandini Bagchee In Collaboration with: Fahmida Ali & Wei Ying Zhang

Our intention was to capture the rhythm of the people walking along the fences of Houston Street. We noticed the curious nature of the people and as a result they subconsciously looked in through the fence. We emphasized that moment and challenged it. In doing so we took the industrial setting that is NYC and faced the viewer with the complete opposite, nature. We created a struggle between nature and he boundaries that humans create around it, particularly on Houston Street.

Weather Station Spring 2013 Critic Fran Leadon In Colloboration with: Fahmida Ali & Sarwat Yunus

As a whole, our weather stations measure different phenomenas that occur during a Thunderstorm. My portion of the project focuses on measuring a Wall Cloud, which comes at the end of a storm. My Weather station is organized in a 3-part sequence where it records the dew point, temperature, and change in wind direction. As people proceed through each section, they record the data on the grid-like surface created by the brick pattern. This creates a temporariily surface that can be used to record data for the next Wall Cloud. Page 23

The Wall is designed based on the word, Contract. Its definition is a sense of shortening and tightening. To get a full sense of what a contracting space feels like, I incorportated a space that feels like release. The moments of “release further enhances the moments of the Contract spaces. I played with different proportions of space and thickness of material get the sense of contraction.

The Pauson House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1939. Like most of his work, there is a relationship between man and its world. It was located in the highest edge of a slope, to which there was to ascend to come near. The place is framed by mountain ranges that are lost in the horizon. There is a heavy emphasis on its axis.

PATH

Fall 2012 Critic David Judelson

Like driving to a destination, one anticipates getting to that a specific place before one starts the journey. My path derives from this sense of anticipation. One starts the path by having the destination in their line of sight. Then, one goes through a series of spatial sequence until one arrives at the final destination, where one gets to reflect on his journey.

Fall 2012 Critic David Judelson

This place accommodates an environment for working and communicating. It has a fluid, spiralling circulation to encourage collaborative work. The spiralling effect also create different degree of privacy needed for various types of work.

Threshold is the transition from one point to another. In this project threshold is represented in the transition from complex small elements to planar large elements. The cantilever center pierces the threshold to enrich the movement. 01- Overall Model 02- Axonometric 03 - Plan 04 - Section
