Musings, “East meets West”, Waves focus this year is again on two partner countries: Portugal and Slovakia. Portugal presents numerous wellknown summer festivals, has a globally successful folk music genre, and a strong pop/rock and electronics scene. In 2017 Portugal, like Austria, was pleased to be a focus at the Eurosonic Festival as well as winning the Eurovision Song Contest. Waves Vienna has been working closely with the second host country, Slovakia, for years. In addition to close geographical proximity and a diverse musical landscape, which will be represented by live acts in the music programme of the festival, Slovakia also has an interesting live music scene including the Pohoda Festival, which has received several international awards.

Ticketmaster Closes Resale Sites Allan McGowan am@vip-booking.com In a major move that caught many in the live business unawares, Ticketmaster has announced the closure of its ticket resale sites, Get Me In! and Seatwave. The decision was greeted with widespread approval. The Company intends to replace the sites with a system which will make it possible for fans to sell unwanted tickets at face value, although Ticketmaster will be collecting a 15% commission. However, not absolutely everyone believes that the move, although welcome to those who object to the on going outrages of secondary ticketing, is entirely altruistic.

VIP News asked Richard Davies what he thought was the real reason for the Ticketmaster move. He told us: “I think that the main reason for the change has been increased pressure from industry, media, government and fans seeking change in the way TM (and others) operate in the secondary market. “The support Twickets has received over the past 7 years for our ‘fans first’ face value model has demonstrated how users wish resale to work. It’s therefore welcome that TM has finally listened to the consumer and adopted our approach. “The fight goes on though as whilst we welcome TM’s change in stance, many other secondary sites still seek to rip off genuine fans with overpriced inventory and exorbitant fees.”

The relationship between any public event and local authorities and services is vital. A lot of the content this year focuses on the exchange of information between these stakeholders. Beyond that, we’re raising questions such as how the industry can develop a European-wide safety culture and self-legislate. For instance, should there be common security standards across all European arenas? It would certainly make things easier for international touring artists, while protecting against reactionary legislation in individual markets. “From Paris to Manchester: How far
