MUSINGS Well, it’s good to be back, all of us at VIP hope that you had a good summer, from both business and personal points of view, and that getting through July without us wasn’t too difficult!
® Unfortunately elements of the type of bad news so dominant in the earlier part of the year continued to prevail, on July 20 Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington took his own life by hanging, echoing the suicide of Sound Garden’s Chris Cornell in May. Protests and Cancellations at Pop-Kultur
The highly subsidized event Pop-Kultur came under the scrutiny of the organisation “Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions” (BDS) for accepting travel support from the Israeli Embassy and displaying the logo of the embassy within its promotional outlets. Shortly before the event took place in Berlin on August 23-25, artists with an Arabian heritage cancelled their gigs. Mohammad Abu Hajar (Syria), Hello Psychaleppo (Syria), Emel Mathlouthi (Tunis) and Islam Chipsy & EEK (Egypt) pulled the plug in protest against an official participation by the Israeli government. In line with this move European artists such as Young Fathers (Scotland) Oranssi Pazuzu (Finland) , Annie Goh (UK) and Iklan featuring Law Holt (UK) cancelled their shows at short notice. The website of organisation bdsmovement. net welcomed the cancellations, stating: “The eloquent statements from the artists stand in stark contrast to the festival’s crude attempts to falsely portray the Palestinian boycott call as directed at individual Israeli artists, shrewdly omitting the fact that the protests were clearly aimed at the Israeli government involvement.” According to media reports, Musicboard Berlin, the promoter of the event, declared that the Israeli Embassy supported the event with a travel fee of 500 Euro for the artist Riff Cohen. Interestingly the Musicboard Berlin isn’t a normal promoter. In fact it is public company originally set up to support the music sector in Berlin. For the Pop-Kultur event alone the company receives funding of about 600.000 Euro from the Senate of Berlin and the federal State Secretary for Culture and Media provides another 500.000 Euro. The

NAMES & JOBS Live Nation Entertainment announced the appointment of Jo Dipple as Senior Vice President, Public Affairs, a role spanning both Live Nation and Ticketmaster internationally. Dipple brings in-depth knowledge and experience to the role having been Chief Executive of UK Music for five years. In her time as CEO, Dipple led a successful judicial review against the UK Government which blocked damaging legislation that would have disadvantaged artists and rights-holders. She helped pass the Live Music Act, established an industry-wide apprenticeship scheme, built up a wealth of new music business economic data and launched pan-industry diversity initiatives. Dipple came to UK Music from 10 Downing Street where she acted as strategic advisor to the British Prime Minister. She was a special adviser at the Treasury and worked on two winning general election campaigns. SO FAR… ten albums, with iconic legends of jazz and rock coming together to play our songs, out of which many deep-rooted friendships have grown. From time to time, we gather in the studio at Lake Starnberg, live and eat together and we find new music together, just like a hippy commune. As Jack Bruce rightly commented, ‘when we get together, we become a band’. We‘ve played countless concerts, which have attracted such influential artists as Robin Gibb (Bee Gees), Roger Hodgson (Supertramp), Jon Lord (Deep Purple), Chris de Burgh, Mick Hucknall (Simply Red) and Peter Frampton. Building on this, I was able to bring together real Supergroups for the two-part TV show, ‘50 Years of Rock’. It wasn’t just in America and England that we found our ‘Soulmates’ – they were also right here in our homeland, Germany: from Till Brönner, the German star of the international

via crossover-genius David Garrett to the icon of Deutschrock Udo Lindenberg. My relationship with Peter Maffay isn’t just through working together and the fact that we are immediate neighbours, it is also through a very deep friendship. I find building a bridge between music and other areas of our society deeply fulfilling, where we can emotionalise our actions with our music. As a result I experience in our musical environment nowadays precious and intense encounters with creative artists, opinion-formers and decision-makers, and with personalities from politics, economics, media and the arts. Given my personal background, the many intense meetings I had with Michail S. Gorbachev remain especially in my memory.
