Photography and Story By Kaitlan McLaughlin On the topic of Fall Fashion, comes a local non-profit whose main mission is to provide women within Clarksville, who are less fortunate, with work attire and resources tailored to fit their employment needs. Headed by businesswomen within the community, Bella’s Closet is an organization that stresses the importance of uplifting, empowering, and assisting women in order to improve their lives. “Two women in the community began discussing ways to help women who may, because of financial need or life circumstances, need help with updating their wardrobe to get into the job market. Although other organizations had clothing giveaways or very low-cost choices, we wanted Bella’s Closet to address the whole woman and not just clothing,” Cynthia Pitts, Director of Bella’s Closet, stated. Bella’s Closet strives to provide services and goods to help women achieve their life goals. Pitts adds, “The clothing is free and is by appointment only, in order to give women the confidence and confidentiality when using our services. We will provide resume building and interview skills workshops, financial education seminars (including credit rebuilding), professional and spiritual mentorship, and networking training with other women in the community leadership to expand their career opportunities.” Donations, and volunteers, are always needed! Bella’s Closet is located in the Carriage House on the grounds of the Smith Trahern Mansion, 101 McClure Street, Clarksville. Customs House Museum & Cultural Center recently unveiled its new exhibit Start Your Engines, geared toward racing enthusiasts of all ages.

Museum Director, Frank Lott said, “Start Your Engines is a celebration of the rich history of racing in Montgomery County. This project has been eighteen months in the making. We started with a concept brought to us by Brad Martin, whose father owned the very first sponsored stock car in Montgomery County when he owned Walnut Hill Service Station on Madison Street. “That got us motivated to reach out to our ‘pit crew’, five people who were indispensable in helping us organize an exhibit of this scale. I had no idea this would fill up most of the museum. Start Your Engines will be at the museum through December 31, 2021.” Barry Carpenter

ith its mission, to maintain a highly professional and efficient workforce to ensure a high quality of life for citizens, the Clarksville Police Department has proven that through perseverance, hard work, and dedication they can effectively carry such a daunting task. Having received the CALEA accreditation, a rigorous process designed to strengthen accountability, both within the agency and the community, by meeting high standards that clearly define police authority performance and responsibilities, for its fourth year in 2020, there is no question that the department strives for excellence in each and everything they do. The tactical unit’s mission is no different as its efforts aim to provide a highly trained and skilled tactical team as a resource for the Clarksville Police Department in the handling of high-risk situations. “The Clarksville Police Department Tactical Unit is a highly trained section of the department that is called upon to bring about the peaceful resolution of unusual/high-risk critical incidents or any other situations that represent a substantial risk to the public. It consists of members from nearly every division of the police department as well as a medic from Montgomery County EMS. The Tactical Unit demands and demonstrates the highest

standards, performance, and conduct in the department to become a member of the unit and to remain a member of the unit,” says Sergeant Vince Duke, Emergency Services Unit Commander. Agent Evans adds, “TACT specializes in high-risk search warrants for the drug unit and detective divisions as well as barricaded, armed, wanted and/or suicidal subjects. TACT is also tasked with VIP security at times for court and is available for large events held by the city.” Few people are willing enough to take on such a high-risk job, but the officers within the tactical unit believe it is the best fit for them. Detective Nathan Lee says, “I wanted to be a member of the Tactical Unit because I wanted to be a part of the unit that was the best trained, the most qualified to handle high-risk situations, and the unit that was called to resolve the most complex and dangerous missions. I wanted to push myself to be a part of the best teams of individuals that the department has.” Not only does this unit delve into high-risk situations, but they also have to complete rigorous training in order to even be considered for the job. “The initial training involved with being a Tactical Unit Member is a 40 hour certification period, followed by a probationary period. All members train twice a month for 10 hours, one of which involves speciality training for snipers and explosive breachers. Individual members are

also enrolled in different training courses throughout the year,” states Officer Maurice Nesbitt, TACT Team Leader.

Officer Matthew Roederer adds, “In my opinion, the Tactical Unit is the most efficient Unit that my department has to offer. No one on the Team is here by force. Everyone here has to maintain a high level of fitness, firearms deployments, and cognitive skills all while under stress. If you want to be a member of this team you have to earn it not only at the tryouts, but every single year when it comes to the multiple qualifications we have to perform as well as our fitness test. This isn’t a one-and-done team. If you want to stay here you have to put the work in every year, all year long.”

Captain Brian McNeeley goes on to explain, “This is a unit that is called upon when things are either at their worst or have the potential to be at their worst, we’re the ones everyone turns to. We’re different in the fact we’re the only ones specialized in several different platforms of operation.”

While there are tactical teams throughout the country, the efficiency of the Clarksville Unit leads by example. TACT Team Leader, Detective William Gilboy tells VIP,, “Our city is comparable to most other large cities in the South East by size and population so our Tactical Unit is also comparable in numbers. Operators attend a myriad of schools throughout the nation and are constantly evolving with new and innovative ways to enhance our tactical abilities. A specific area that I see where we differ from some other units is our cohesiveness. The unit is very

Christina Watson talked about the purpose of the event. “Our Healing Heroes golf tournament is a fundraiser for our organization. SAFE’s goal is to provide services like mental health counseling to active duty soldiers, veterans, first responders, and their families. This is the first time we’ve done a golf tournament, and we’re so happy to be here at Swan Lake. All menu items are derived from Legends original recipes. “I had a vision - it took months of sleepless nights and hard work, but the end result was definitely worth it all,” said Kevin. “The vibe, the feel, our amazing food, and our awesome team… Legends is where you want to be - Clarksville’s destination location.”

Legends also caters and has its very own food truck, which frequents events throughout the city as well as Fort Campbell. They service weddings, social gatherings, military hail & farewells, holiday parties, corporate functions and other events. Legends is also an approved caterer for Clarksville Parks & Recreation’s Liberty Park venues, to include the Wilma Rudolph Event Center. “Four years ago, I came home one night and told my wife I was going to make a barbecue sauce,” Kevin said. “A few days later I had what we now call our ‘Legends Original Sauce’. Everything evolved from there.” Legends now boasts 16 original homemade barbeque sauces including Legends White Lightning, Blueberry, Pineapple Habanero, Mango Habanero, Blackberry, Spicy Mustard and fan favorite Peach Bourbon. For the not-so-faintof heart, Legends has ‘Lucy’ (short for Lucifer), whose been known to make grown men cry. Seriously.

Kevin’s masterpieces give traditional barbecue an artistic and unexpected twist. Inspired by his limitless imagination and passion for barbecue, his unique style has gained a strong following in the local area, with many visiting the Legends Smokehouse and Grill restaurant in hopes to try one of his many “secret menu” items. All of Kevin’s specialty creations are given distinctive names such as “Pork-n-Roll’, ‘Sweet Mess”, ‘Ooey Gooey’, ‘Mr. Nasty’ and ‘Naptime’. For anyone who has not experienced Legends, Kevin invites them to stop by and give it a try. He will even be happy to pick out something special. “I make money to make more barbecue, I don’t make barbecue to make money,” he said. “I just enjoy what I do, it’s an art form for me. “This is our first-ever Bankin Festival,” Jay Yarbrough said. “It’s a fundraiser for Safe House, the battered women’s shelter here in Clarksville. The shelter provides safe shelter for domestic violence victims, a crisis line, counseling support, and other assistance.” This is the first fundraiser for the organization, which Yarbrough and his friends started about six months ago. “Many of us are connected through Camp Rainbow,” Yarbrough said. “Dillon Jennings, Daniel Brooks and I wanted to start a non-profit that raises money to help local organizations that need additional funding. There are eleven of us, and each member had a role in this inaugural event.”

“I was having lunch with MCVC’s Sherry Pickering, talking about how difficult it has been to hold fundraiser events, and I said, ‘what about a motorcycle event’,” Wes Golden said. “A poker run happens outside, and everyone has a good time. So, here we are with about fifty riders. First, they’re headed to Operation Stand Down, and then to veteran-owned breweries. Each stop will be run by a different veteran’s non-profit, which will give them some one-on-one time as the riders coming through.” Sherry Pickering, Executive Director of Montgomery County Veterans Coalition said, “We wanted to get our veterans out, doing something lighthearted. It was great fun, and a chance to highlight these veteranowned breweries. It was a great day. We’re very happy with the turnout, and we’re already planning for next year. The event came soon after the announcement by Governor Bill Lee of his decision to appoint Adrienne Fry and Robert Bateman as the 19th Judicial District’s newest Circuit Court Judges. Bateman replaces Judge Jill Ayers who has been appointed to the Tennessee Court of Appeals-Middle Section. Fry is replacing Judge Ross Hicks, who announced his retirement in February. “I’m humbled by all the support I’ve received from members of the community as well as the local bar,” Judge Fry said. “This has always been a career aspiration, so this is a dream come true.”

Story By Kaitlan McLaughlin With the 2021 football season just under way, Austin Peay is geared up to have an outstanding season, with an even more outstanding roster and newly appointed Head Coach, Scotty Walden. The new coach is everything but intimidated as he takes on his new role and settles into the Clarksville community.

served as Head Coach. From there he got the opportunity to coach at the FBS level at the University of Southern Mississippi in 2016 to 2020. Scotty said, “I was the CO Offensive Coordinator and then became the interim head coach there towards the end. Then a new opportunity was presented to me to be the head coach for Austin Peay, and here I am. It was

Scotty Walden’s love for football stemmed from childhood. Growing up in a single parent household, his mom and grandma were his biggest supporters. Scotty’s mom wasn’t too into sports, but supported him in everything he did. However, his grandma really sold the idea of playing football. “She was like my second mom. She’s huge into sports, and even played basketball herself. You know growing up around Dallas, obviously we’re big Cowboys fans. We would always watch the games on TV, so that’s really where the love started for me,” Scotty explains. Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, Scotty started his coaching career at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, where he played and graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree, as the Offensive Coordinator. During his time as the Offensive Coordinator, not only did the football team perform well, but he also earned his Masters Degree and was later offered the Offensive Coordinator position at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas. Walden was there for a total of 4 years, where the last year he

an amazing blessing to say the least. We love Clarksville, and are really fortunate to be here at Austin Peay.” As the season progresses, the 2021 Austin Peay Governors make tremendous strides to not only become better athletes, but better people as well. “We have something we call Code Red,

and that’s our core values both directly and indirectly. It’s about telling the players about the core values as well as helping them live it and give examples of it. We instill commitment, relentlessness, unselfishness, toughness, and integrity. That is the nucleus of what it means to be an Austin Peay Governor. We strive to not only have a great team, but an elite team, and to get to that elite level the players not only need to live and breathe the values I just mentioned, but they need to take it upon themselves to carry out those objectives. The coaches can only take it so far. If our team is coach driven, then they can be a good team, but having one that is player driven, leads to that elite level we are aiming for,” Scotty explains. “We try our best to touch all aspects of the student athlete. There’s a lot more than just playing football and I want our guys to chase those opportunities. For instance, being passionate about what they’re majoring in. Some guys just come into it with a ‘I’m just studying this so I can play football’ mentality but we want them to start to develop a plan on what they want to be, and what they want to do. You have to devote a lot to this game, no doubt about it, but at the end of the day, I want them to have just as much passion about their career path as they do football.” Scotty adds. As the 2021 Austin Peay Governors’ season continues, we wish them the best of luck. With hard work, dedication, and with the invigorating coaching of Scotty Walden, this team is bound for great things.

Baniko Harley is a Birmingham, Alabama native, who originally planned to attend Jackson State with his longtime friend Cordell Jackson. “Originally, we both were planning on going to Jackson State because it was in our hometown. Every Saturday we would go to try and get a scholarship, and one Saturday they were playing Austin Peay. We had never heard of Austin Peay, but they were giving out scholarships, and Jackson State wasn’t, so we both decided to join the team,” Baniko explained. “I started playing football when I was four. I was just a kid who wanted to run around and play, so my grandma put a football in my hand and told me to play. Ever since then, my love, and appreciation for football has grown,” Baniko added. Baniko has already obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Human Performance, with a concentration in K-12 education. Now he is pursuing his Master’s Degree in coaching. “Being not only an athlete, but a student-athlete helps me out in my everyday life. For example, I know I am put on a higher pedestal than just the average student. A lot is expected out of me, and because of that I strive to be better each and every day.” Jack McDoanld is originally from Brentwood, and chose to attend Austin Peay because of its atmosphere and the environment overall. “It was also very close to my hometown, with it being only an hour away. Because of that, it seemed like the best fit for me,” Jack explained. “I actually started playing football when I was five years old. I started because I loved watching the game of football when I was really little. I asked my parents, and they were on board with me playing, so I’ve been playing ever since,” said Jack. Jack stressed the importance of being both a football player, and a full-time student. He has already obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Marketing, and is now currently in Master’s program for Business Management. “Time management is the biggest thing for me. Being able to get your schoolwork done on time and knowing what you have. A big part of it goes into being able to handle your business both on, and off, the field.” “I think being a student-athlete helps build your character on and off the field. It teaches you different things about life and how to do things the right way and also how to treat others. I think there’s so many things that go along with playing the game of football, and playing sports in general, that can help you off the field.”

Amy Adams Strunk assumed the role of controlling owner of the team in March 2015. She also serves as the co-chairman of the franchise’s Board of Directors.

stepping up to donate $1 million from the Titans Foundation to the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee to help those affected by the disaster.

In her time as controlling owner Strunk has transformed the franchise through her vision, commitment and decisions that have set the team on an ascending trajectory. She hired Jon Robinson as General Manager and Mike Vrabel as Head Coach, while installing Steve Underwood first and then Burke Nihill to the position of President/ CEO. Additionally, she has annually committed significant resources to upgrade Nissan Stadium and the team’s practice facility, Saint Thomas Sports Park. Strunk also continues to grow the administrative staff for the franchise with significant additions across all departments.

In 2019, the team broke ground on a significant addition to Saint Thomas Sports Park, which doubles the facility footprint and will allow all departments to be under one roof, after spending many years spread out over multiple locations. Additionally, the team has refurbished a number of football areas that previously were untouched since the building opened in 1999.

All those changes translated to success on the field as the Titans went from a three-win team in 2015, to posting five consecutive winning seasons, playoff berths in three of the last four years, a trip to the AFC Championship game in 2019 and a division title in 2020. It was the franchise’s first division title since 2008, first appearance in the AFC Championship game since 2002, and the streak of five consecutive winning seasons is the longest in the “Titans era” (1999-present). In the spring of 2018, she collaborated with Nashville city officials to secure the 2019 NFL Draft for downtown Nashville. By any measure, the 2019 NFL Draft was the most successful in NFL history, drawing a record 600,000 fans to downtown Nashville over the three-day event and setting television ratings records. The Draft resulted in $224 million in economic impact and $133 million in direct spending for the Tennessee economy, which were both NFL high-water marks. In June of 2019, Strunk was honored by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame as the “Tennessean of the Year,” for her role in bring the NFL Draft to Nashville and her work to transform the franchise into a consistent winner. Three years ago, the Titans launched the “We Stand For” campaign, designed to bringing attention to the causes that are important to the team’s players, coaches and executives. In July 2019, Strunk presented $450,000 in grant funding to 10 local non-profit organizations to help aid their causes. Strunk also was a leader in the community following the tornado which struck Nashville and Middle Tennessee in 2020,

One of the daughters of Titans franchise founder K.S. “Bud” Adams, Jr., Strunk was raised on football and is proud of her father’s role in founding the American Football League as well as the decades of leadership he provided not only to the Titans franchise, but also to the National Football League. Her goal is to build upon that legacy and establish the Titans as one of the league’s elite franchises. An independent businesswoman for more than 30 years, Strunk is the owner and president of both Kenada Farms and the Little River Oil and Gas Company. She has been significantly involved in the family’s farming and ranching businesses, including serving as the vice president of Bud Adams Ranches, Inc. These ventures provided her valuable knowledge about customer service as well as the opportunity to manage a diverse range of employees and business operations, and these experiences have shaped her management style. “I believe in hiring good people and letting them do their jobs,” said Strunk. “Everything should revolve around what’s best for the Titans and not around the owner. While I talk frequently with the leaders of the Titans as I do with all of our family’s companies, the people in our football operations need the control and latitude necessary to create an exciting and competitive team. “Our business staff needs the same freedom in order for our organization to reach its full potential and to continue to create a first-class fan experience at Nissan Stadium. Decisions will always be made based on what is the best for the team to reach our goals

of becoming one of the elite franchises of the NFL and enriching the communities of Nashville and Middle Tennessee. “Nashville is one of the most dynamic and rapidly growing cities in the nation with a very promising future,” said Strunk. “We are proud to be a part of Nashville and Middle Tennessee, and we want the Titans to be a leader in providing opportunities for people and businesses in the city and the region to achieve their dreams.” Engaged in the process of improving all aspects of the franchise, Strunk has the best interest of the football team and the fans on her mind as she makes her decisions. As evidence of that engagement, the Titans have become one of the best home teams in the NFL, posting a 25-11 home mark in the last 36 games leading into the 2021 season. In 2016, Strunk was appointed to the NFL’s Hall of Fame Committee. Her appointment continues a family legacy, as her father was a long-time member of the committee. In 2018, she added an appointment to the NFL’s Super Bowl and Major Event Advisory Committee. A graduate of the University of Texas with a degree in history, Strunk is an avid horse enthusiast whose other interests include farming, ranching, tennis and a variety of other outdoor activities. She also served as a volunteer coach of both the boys and girls varsity tennis teams at her daughter’s high school. Never one to turn down a challenge, during the 2017 offseason, Strunk accepted an invitation to skydive with members of the Army’s Golden Knights to kick off draft week. Strunk is married to her husband Bill. She has three children — Tracy, Tommy, and Blanche, who are all avid sports fans and outdoor enthusiasts.

Clarksville Christian School educators and administrators gathered just before the start of the school year for a team breakfast at F&M Bank’s Franklin Room. “It’s a way to kickoff the new school year,” Dr. Brad Moser said. “This is the start of our fifteenth school year. It’s a milestone year for CCS. We started at the Hilldale Church of Christ building, after a few years we were able to build our current facility. This year we have upward of 435 students enrolled, Pre-K – 12. We’re very blessed, and give the Lord all the credit. Each day we lose three to four Tennesseans to suicide. In 2019 there were 1,220 recorded suicide deaths in Tennessee. “Suicide is one of the month preventable causes of death,” says Morgan Tubbs, Data and Communications Director of the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network. “We can all strive to make a difference in someone’s life by being open about our struggles, lending a listening ear to others, and making ourselves familair with the resources available.” TSPN is a statewide grassroots public-private organizaition working to reduce the number of Tennesseans lost to suicide. TSPN draws awareness to this public health issue throughout the year in various ways and each September they host a statewide event. This year’s event took place September 8th and 9th during the National Suicide Prevention Awareness Week at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro TN. The two-day event focused on the resilience they have seen from 2020 to 2021 and also recognize the efforts of the TSPN volunteers and organization partners and state department collaborators. Nearly 400 guests celebrated Flying High, the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center’s annual fundraiser, at Clarksville Regional Airport. The evening included dining, dancing, awards and recognition, and live and silent auctions of unique art and other donated items. The evening’s theme was 1920’s speakeasy, Nashville jazz band The Willies provided the live music, and event-goers were dressed as if it were the Roarin’ Twenties. “I was extremely pleased, gratified, and overwhelmed with the support we received. The attendance at Flying High was absolutely excellent,” Customs House Museum Director Frank Lott said. “I thought the venue was perfect. Flying High at the airport made sense, and that big hangar made for a great venue.
