Roaring Into the 20’s at Strawberry Alley Ale Works brought smartly dressed party-goers into the new decade with style.

The event featured live music from the 9-piece dance band Music for Mercy, a never-ending parade of hors d’ouevres, a champagne toast, and a midnight breakfast buffet. The New Year’s Eve soiree was held above the restaurant in an area known as Upstairs at Strawberry Alley.

Doors opened at 9 p.m. and the room filled quickly, with most donning 1920’s attire. Throughout the evening, servers circled the dining room with trays of Strawberry Alley’s burger sliders, pizza, bruschetta, southwest egg rolls and more.

About 140 guests enjoyed the evening’s festivities, which included a variety of games, a photo booth, and Music for Mercy’s classics-filled play list, which kept the dance floor busy until well after midnight.

Clarksville Parks & Recreation’s 8th Annual A Chocolate Affair was another sold-out success, bringing 600 chocolate lovers to the Wilma Rudolph Event Center. “This is our 8th Annual A Chocolate Affair,” Parks & Rec’s Trey Stroud said. “This sells out each year, and this year may have been a record. We sold out the entire event in about 20 days. That’s 300 people for each session, 50 VIP’s who come in a half-hour early, and then 250 general admission guests.” This year’s event had 16 vendors, including several returning favorites.

“But, the great thing for our attendees is, seven of these are first time vendors, brand new to A Chocolate Affair,” Stroud said. “We have B’s Cheese Cakes, O’Charley’s, La Casa Taqueria and Nothing Bundt Cakes. Two Birds Coffee Is owned by a really neat couple, Joe and Amanda Witmer. They served a Mocha Cold Brew today that was fantastic. Season’s Market, Silke’s Old World Breads Bakery, Culver’s, Chealsey’s Cookie Jar, Cakes by Jackie, and a selection of gluten-free treats from Savor the Sweets. That’s just to name a few. “Thanks to all this year’s vendors, patrons, volunteers and sponsors. Special thanks to Gateway Credit Union, today’s Presenting Partner. They were tremendous to work with.”

Serving in the army for 12 years, and raising her son as a single mother, Barb is not a stranger to adversity. During her service, Barb needed to go in for a routine brain surgery. Unfortunately, her surgery did not go as planned. Barb’s neck was dislocated during surgery, and it led to a massive stroke, and paralysis on the left side of her body. The ensuing months were exceptionally tumultuous. Barb was transferred to an inpatient rehab facility in Chicago for an entire year. Barb was married while going through rehabilitation in Chicago.
Finally, there was a light at the end of the tunnel, Barb was approved for a grant that allowed her to build a custom, handicap accessible home.

Her old Clarksville home no longer fit her new normal because it was not handicap accessible. Barb’s unit didn’t hesitate to jump to action. Her former unit helped to widen doorways and add ramps. Through

her unit’s selfless actions and generous private donations, the rennovations to her house were completed and Barb was able to come home from Chicago.
A close friend recommended Hannah Price. Barb tells VIP, “Hannah was amazing from the get-go and helped with everything.”
Because Hannah was instrumental in selling her old house extremely quickly, Barb had the financial security and comfort to close on her new custom home. Ultimately, Barb’s strength and tenacity despite her situation led to her triumph on the road to recovery in her new home.
Rudolph proved them wrong, and that became the pattern of her life. People doubted her, and she surpassed all limits and expectations every time. It would have been easy for Rudolph to live an unremarkable, mundane life. Honoring Black History Month: The Legacy of Wilma G. Rudolph Story By: Bethany Sigler
In Clarksville, the name Wilma Rudolph is synonymous with both one of the most remarkable economic hubs, and our city’s most popular event center. Wilma Rudolph Drive is arguably Clarksville’s busiest, most profitable thoroughfare, and the Wilma Rudolph Event Center hosts some of Clarksville’s most exclusive galas and biggest community events. When Clarksvillians think of Wilma Rudolph, progress and possibilities come to mind. However, Wilma Rudolph grew up in a very different Clarksville than we have today. Rudolph was not born as a woman of means. Born prematurely as the 20th of 22 children in 1940, her future must have looked bleak. From the very beginning young Rudolph was at a severe socioeconomic disadvantage. On top of that, she survived bouts of scarlet fever, polio, and wore braces on her legs. Doctors told her she would never walk again.
However, Wilma Rudolph didn’t let other people’s identifiers, assumptions, or prejudices hinder her aspirations. Rudolph persisted, fought for herself, and overcame every obstacle in her way. Not only did Wilma Rudolph walk again, she ran, and in 1960 she earned the title of Fastest Woman in the World. She ended her career as an Olympic champion and an international icon. Against all odds, Wilma Rudolph became America’s sweetheart. Rudolph’s influence is poetic and has become one of the defining hallmarks of Clarksville. Clarksville is a city that persists, a city that breaks boundaries, and a city that has become incredibly diverse and inclusive. Wilma Rudolph’s persistence through adversity is encouraging and empowering. Her heroic accomplishments ring in the halls of history, and she is deservingly and lovingly memorialized as Clarksville grows. Her unapologetic self-determination, and relentless pursuit of her goals is inspiring. This Black History Month, we not only honor the legacy of Wilma Rudolph, we honor the legacies of her foremothers and forefathers. We honor, remember, and respect the struggles and strife that has led to the rich tapestry of our modern community.

Close to 400 volunteers spent the better part of four days at APSU’s Morgan University Center getting ready for Warm Souls 2019, an event Mayor Joe Pitts said “... is what Clarksville is all about.” The event is organized each year by Jon Vaughn and his team at Radical Mission Compassionate Ministries. “We’ve provided more than 12,000 meals, and 15,000 toys over these last eleven years,” Vaughn said. “In our 12th year, we now give away bibles, and provide free haircuts. We’re thankful for everyone who contributes to Warm Souls continued growth.”

People in need come to Warm Souls for free clothing and shoes, family portraits and more. Then sit down to enjoy some live music, and a home cooked meal. “We provide a full holiday style meal,” Vaughn said. “This year, we are serving turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn and rolls. We’ve set up a Free Store, a Kid’s Corner, and a Love Your Parents Store. We expect between 800 and 900 people, but we opened the doors less than an hour ago, and we’re already half way there. So, much thanks goes to CTS for providing free rides to anyone wanting to attend.”

TownePlace Suites by Marriott was the site of the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce December Business After Hours, and new General Manager, Brandon Chauvin took a moment to welcome everyone to the property.

Later, he shared his thoughts. “We are a newer option in the community,” Chauvin said. “I was excited for this opportunity to introduce myself to members of the Chamber, show them the space, and let them know what we have to offer.” The event was held in the main meeting room, a 5,700 square-foot space that can accommodate up to 600 guests in a theater style setting. The room can also be divided into smaller spaces. “This property is somewhat unique,” Chauvin said. “We offer options that cater to the extended-stay guest. All our rooms are set up to provide a ‘home away from home’ feel, and that includes a small in-room kitchen. Plus, we have the space to cater to larger groups. We are looking to partner with surrounding hotels as well, so they might utilize our meeting space for their guests’ training, business meetings, or other needs.”

The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center’s annual winter fundraiser, Champagne & Chocolate, was an evening of decadent indulgence and generous philanthropy. Champagne & Chocolate highlights include champagne with gold detailed flutes and raspberries, decadent deserts, and an amazing silent auction. The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center is a middle Tennessee haven for the arts. Clarksville is privileged to house Tennessee’s second largest general interest museum. The Purple Heart Project is a nonprofit organization that transforms the lives of combat wounded veterans through the art of woodworking and craftsmanship. The entire experience is free of cost to the veteran. Founder Rob Cosman, and Purple Heart Project team, fund everything including airfare, lodging, and meals. Scholarshiped veterans are also gifted $3,000 worth of hand tools to set them up for success on their journeys as craftsmen. The Purple Heart Project began after founder, life time woodworker, and Canadian, Rob Cosman, had a lifechanging conversation with an American Marine Corps veteran. The Purple Heart Project serves 28 veterans annually. Each class consists of 6 wounded warriors, and 6 civilians. The combination helps wounded warriors assimilate into a collaborative environment with peers. Wood working with hand tools is a serene experience. It’s soothing and quieting for the mind. Feeling the wood give beneath the tools, helps give wounded warriors the power to mold their lives. Shaving away unneeded material is a powerful, therapeutic metaphor.

LOCAL IMPACT Artisan, master craftsman, and owner of the Hardwood Grove, Danny, is an alumnus of the Purple Heart Project. His experience turned into a passion, and he made it a livelihood. Currently located in Sango, the Hardwood Grove creates custom curated, small batch furniture. When talking about the Purple Heart Project, Danny says, “I went to it in October, and I was so inspired by it. I knew I was opening up the store here, and I asked him to come down.” Our local veteran population needs resources like the Purple Heart Project, and Danny knew that one of Rob’s classes would be incredibly well received and attended. On Saturday, January 18th, the house was packed. By bringing Rob Cosman and his Purple Heart Project crew to the Hardwood Grove, Danny gave an entire room full of veterans the opportunity to apply for the Purple Heart Project’s program, and an opportunity to heal. Billed as a “Motorcycle Family Tradition For Over 50 Years”, Appleton Harley-Davidson recently held its annual Christmas Eve Feast, “a celebration of family, friends and all we are blessed with.” It’s an annual event with music and food that started as a place to go during the holidays, for soldiers and others in the community who couldn’t be with family. It has become much more. “Of course The American Red Cross is here doing our annual Blood Drive, and it’s an absolutely beautiful day,” Tia Suiter said. “We have so much to be thankful for. There will be so many people here today, you won’t be able to move. Everybody enjoys the great food and our free gift wrapping service, and this year we’re giving away a kids electric bike.”

2020 is off to a soaring start, and the excitement in Clarksville’s business community is palpable. The Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce held their January mingle at the Clarksville Regional Airport.

The evening included tours of aircraft, speeches praising and attesting to the growth of the airport and our area, as well a lively trumpet solo from a member of the Gateway Chamber Orchestra. A variety of vendor and informational booths were present.

A Small and Minority Business Workshop was recently held at APSU’s Morgan Center. The event which was sponsored by Fortera Credit Union and presented by APSU’s Small Business Development Center, Clarksville Human Relations Commission (CHRC), and Tennessee Minority Business Alliance (TNMBA) drew almost 200 participants. Juanita Charles was one of this year’s organizers. She chairs the CHRC and is also a member of the TNMBA. “We worked closely with APSU Small Business Development Center’s Dr. Lorneth Peters and received great support from Fortera’s John Crespo,” Charles said. “About 180 people came out to hear presentations by this year’s three Keynote Speakers.

“Commissioner, Dr. Rashidah Leverett spoke about The Entrepreneurial Mindset. Ronald Williams spoke on The Spirit of Networking, and Dr. Rubin Cockrell’s topic was How to Conduct Business as a Business.” New ideas were implemented for this year’s event, and the feedback has been positive. “People were able to attend just the classes they needed, of the twenty that were offered,” Charles said. “We’re happy with the way it turned out. Our focus will continue to be helping small business owners get on their feet, and finding ways for them to remove barriers so they can grow their business.”

As part of its popular Run Series, Fort Campbell MWR recently hosted the Polar Bear Run and Plunge at Gardner Pool.

Everyone was invited out for a family friendly 5K or 1-Mile Fun Run followed by a brisk plunge into the pool. To a achieve the “polar effect” the doors to the facility were opened, and the cold air worked quickly to bring pool-side temperatures down.

The morning was cold and breezy, but still some brave runners wore shorts. A DJ played music to help everyone pump up their adrenaline. 1-Mile runners lined up outside the facility set out at 9 a.m., they were followed by the 5K runners at 9:15.

Many of the participants brought their dogs along for the run, but sadly, their furry friends were not allowed in the pool. During the course of the event, families were able to pose for photographs. Polar Bear towels were available to commemorate the occasion.

“This year we had about 100 people here to enjoy the afternoon, but only about eight entries. Some were very unique recipes. Everyone used different bases and ingredients. Some were made with meat, some with just veggies. They were all very different but really delicious.” Drysdale said this year’s jalapeno eating contest was entertaining. “It did get pretty intense. Corey Daniels was this year’s winner. He was able to eat five whole jalapenos in 60 seconds. This year’s Broom Ball match at the Downtown Commons ice rink was a double-header, with Clarksville Fire Rescue taking on Clarksville Police Department before the Mayors faced the Generals. “It’s about team building, camaraderie and family development,” Mayor Joe Pitts said. “Bringing the city, county and Fort Campbell together, that’s what it’s all about.” Mayor Pitts said he “had better sense than to play,” saying, “I’ll be dropping the ball and getting out of the way.” He did express confidence in Mayor Durrett’s “fierceness”. Jordan Burns is a graphic designer and Clarksville native. She is passionate about progress and believes that the best way to advance our community is to be invested and involved in the growth. Professionally, and recreationally, Jordan works to build up Clarksville. She spends her free time pursuing charitable and community service based endeavors. Putting her principles to work, Jordan tells VIP, “Currently, I lead in my community by being involved with the Customs House Museum Guild and Marketing Committee, as well as a committee of the Montgomery County Imagination Library Advisory Board. I am thankful that I am able to use my knowledge of graphic design and marketing to help make Clarksville a better place.” When asked about the role Clarksville Young Professionals has played in her life, Jordan says, “Clarksville Young Professionals is the perfect avenue to make connections with the next generation of leaders in Clarksville. Before I joined CYP, I was looking for new ways to get involved in my community. As a Clarksville native, I knew the importance of supporting our city and helping it grow. Clarksville Young Professionals helps me strengthen my relationships with young professionals that have similar goals in finding new paths to leadership opportunities.” As a graphic designer working for the Clarksville Area Chamber of commerce, it is up to Jordan to brand our community’s economic landscape. It’s a charge she doesn’t take lightly. “The thing I love most about my career is the opportunity to be creative and bring a person’s vision to life. There’s nothing better than seeing their reaction to the end result. As the Marketing and Design Manager for the Clarksville-Montgomery County Economic Development Council, I am able to use my Marketing and Graphic Design abilities to showcase how unique Clarksville is to others, both locally and nationally.”

Local Clarksville Police Department Officers participated recently in the area’s Tip-a-Cop event for Special Olympics Tennessee, an evening of fun that raised almost $4,000 for the cause. Amy Parker is Vice President of Marketing and Development for Special Olympics Tennessee.

“Tonight, we have Tip-a-Cop happening here at Strawberry Alley Ale Works, as well as the O’Charley’s Riverside Dr, location,” Parker said. “We have members of CPD that are literally going to be protecting and serving tonight to help us raise money for Special Olympics.” Parker said events like this are held across the nation, but this was the organization’s first time at Strawberry Alley Ale Works. “These CPD Officers have definitely stepped up for Special Olympics,” Parker said. “They support our local program as well as our state program. In total, $3,800 was raised at this year’s Tip-a-Cop."

Providing inclusive athletic opportunities for an average of 100-150 athletes per sporting event, Buddy Ball is a huge asset to our community. There’s a sport for every season including baseball, basketball, bowling, street hockey, indoor soccer, and water polo. Whether participants are seasoned athletes or giving it a shot for the first time, Buddy Ball is perfect for all skill levels. On a practical level, Buddy Ball helps athletes improve motor skills and increase muscle awareness while teaching lifetime fitness and encouraging comradery. Buddy Ball also brings inclusivity off the field by providing nonathletic opportunities like proms and pageants. BEYOND THE BALL FIELD As every Clarksvillian knows, Fort Campbell has a storied history and boasts some of our country’s bravest men and women. However, lesser known, is that Fort Campbell is one of two bases in the country with a program for service member who have special needs dependents. If a service member has a dependent with special needs, they can elect to remain at Fort
Campbell for the entirety of their service. As a result, Clarksville has a higher than average population of persons who require alternative accommodations. Clarksville is a community that responds and recognizes that the ability to recreate is central to culture and connection. The Clarksville Rotary Club funded and sponsored the construction of Civitan Park’s Field of Dreams. The Clarksville Field of Dreams is an inclusive baseball field that allows everyone to enjoy America’s past time on equal footing. Nonprofits and foundations like Colton’s Corner continue to raise funds for inclusive recreation, and both the city and county governments have made inclusivity a priority. Our city is brimming with diversity, and because of our uniquely transient population we are truly a southern melting pot. Often, when people come to Clarksville because of Fort Campbell or APSU, they stay. Each addition makes the Queen City shine even brighter. VOLUNTEERS Buddy Ball is more than an athletic league. It is a resource for athletes who require alternate accommodations. It facilitates fellowship, and friendship for families who
have similar experiences. At its core, it builds our community. Volunteers come from every corner of Clarksville and Montgomery County. Christy Janssen, PDI PR Coordinator, says, “There is a way for everyone to fit in, special needs or not.” APSU student athletes can frequently be found volunteering on the Buddy Ball fields and courts. The Gov’s baseball players are some of the regulars. For APSU baseball, Buddy Ball is a way to connect and share their love of the game with their community. No matter background or athletic level, Buddy Ball is a phenomenal opportunity to get to know your community. The Clarksville Branch of the NAACP #5582 and Women In NAACP (WIN) presented the 2020 Jubilee Day Celebration at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church on New Year’s Day. Jimmie Garland, NAACP Clarksville Branch President spoke on this year’s theme: When We Fight, We Win. “Each New Year’s Day, Jubilee Day celebrates the announcement of the freeing of the slaves in 1865,” Garland said. “It was done in July, but many slaves didn’t get the notice until January 1st. So, this is a reminder for our youth. I was telling my grand kids in church recently that when I was born, my grandfather had only been free for about 60 years.” The program, which was filled with moving words from Clarksville’s religious and community leaders, began with a song. Lift Every Voice and Sing is often referred to as the Black National Anthem. It begins, “Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty”. “Our Speaker today is Pastor Michael Moss,” Garland said. “He’s the new Pastor here at Tabernacle MBC. Our theme is about standing up for right, and doing what’s right. When we do that in a positive, continuous manner, we win, no matter race, creed or color.”

The Office of Housing and Community Development has a housing rehabilitation program that enables eligible homeowners within the city limits of Clarksville to maintain the quality of their housing and create a positive effect in the surrounding neighborhood. We assist homeowners by lowering energy bills, correcting health and safety hazards as well as code violations, and making other repairs. If you are elderly or disabled, we can also assist you by installing accessibility ramps, grab bars and other barrier-free improvements that will make it easier for you to get around. All work required in your home is completed by an approved, licensed contractor. Staff from the Office if Housing and Community Development will monitor the work to ensure that it is done correctly and within program guidelines.
How do I qualify? To qualify, you must be an owner-occupant of a home located within the city limits of Clarksville. Your property taxes and mortgage payments must be current and your household income must be within prescribed limits, based on your family size. Grants and low interest loans are available depending on your income and individual needs.

The electricity in the room was tangible. Their speeches were captivating, and their message was clear: we are growing, and we are going to keep growing. Our parks systems are maturing and revolutionizing, and we are revamping our transportation with a major focus on main thoroughfares. The momentum Clarksville gained in 2019 is remarkable, continuous, and sustainable. Our forward movement is evident that we, as a community, are not content to sit on our laurels. 2019 was a banner year for growth, but 2020 is already coming out strong. The Clarksville, Montgomery County area is moving into 2020 on a unified front, with limitless potential.
