Mayor Joe Pitts Oath of Office Ceremony Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Clarksville's newly elected Mayor, Joe Pitts, was sworn in by Gen. Sessions and Juvenile Court Judge Tim Barnes at a ceremony inside the Wilma Rudolph Event Center on January 2, 2019. After taking his oath, Mayor Pitts then had the honor of swearing in three new City Council members - Stacey Streetman, Ward 10; Travis Holleman, Ward 7; and Vondell Richmond, Ward 2. Rob Rayburn of the City of Clarksville estimates that a crowd of more than 600 came out to the event to see Mayor Pitts officially begin his term as Mayor of Clarksville. The parking lot was overflowing and some groups were bused in for the event. Ward 5 City Councilman, David Allen was named Mayor Pro-tem at the ceremony. Cynthia & Mayor Joe Pitts
Craig Fitzhugh &
Mayor Pitts spent several minutes recognizing his friends and supporters Judge Tim Barnes in the audience, whom he thanked for their support throughout the process. He then assured the audience that his actual speech would be a much shorter endeavor, and it was. Mayor Pitts promised, new and improved relations with the Montgomery County Commission, continued support for Fort Campbell and our military residents, and a Mayor who will not only lead, but listen.

The Clarksville Association of Realtors
2019 Awards and Installation Luncheon Story + Photography by Tony Centonze The Clarksville Association of Realtors recently hosted its 2019 Awards & Installation Luncheon at Wilma Rudolph Event Center, with more than 160 local realtors in attendance. CAR's Deb Haines-Kulick took a moment to talk about the event, and the future of our city's booming real estate market.
Becki Seay & Cherre Armstrong
“This is our annual installation and awards luncheon,” Haines-Kulick said. “Today we recognize the realtors who made a difference in 2018, and we install all of our Directors and Officers for 2019. It's a special day, as Eric Boyd is being installed as President, on the 30th anniversary of his father Marion Boyd Jr.'s ascension to the office.” Haines-Kulick says that CAR currently has about 1,000 realtors in its membership. She also thinks the market still looks good well in to 2019.
Janette Atkins & Cameron Foster
One of the highlights of Wednesday's program was Toniann Thompson receiving the 2018 Realtor of the Year award, which was presented to her by 2017 Realtor of the Year, Dee Wagstaff-Williams.

hholiday open housee Story + Photography by Lucas Ryan Chambers One of Clarksville most visited attractions--the Beachaven Winery-hosted their Annual Holiday Open House this year to a recordbreaking number of guests. The winery offered everything from live music, food and handmade goods to wine tastings, which put everyone in the holiday spirit. It was the perfect day for a date with one’s spouse or a day with friends and do some last-minute shopping all while having fun. This year, a percentage of proceeds went directly to helping Manna Café, a local charity.

at Appleton Harley-Davidson Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Tia Suiter and the team at Appleton Harley-Davidson recently hosted Business After Hours and they did so in style with a nod to the classic film "It's a Wonderful Life." Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Melinda Shepard, says the event, which takes place on the 3rd Thursday of each month, is very popular. The calendar is already booked through 2020. “This is a great way to get people who might not normally visit your business to see what you have to offer,” Shepard said. “Anytime you can get 100 to 125 men and women from the local business community together at one time is great,” said Shepard. “There are tremendous benefits for any business owner.”

Christmas at the Trahern Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Smith-Trahern Mansion recently held its annual Trees of Christmas Open House, featuring great holiday-inspired performances by the Northeast High School Show Choir, Lydia Walker Athey, the Roxy Carolers, and Virtuous Praise. The event is sponsored each year by FCE (Family and Community Education). Mansion volunteers work in partnership with the City of Clarksville to decorate the historic home with dozens of Christmas trees, contributed by local businesses and organizations. Most rooms contain multiple displays. Fort Campbell Spouses Club's tree was themed “More Than Just a Wife”, the Grand Hall Tree was called “Birds of a Different Feather Flock Together”. Roxy Regional Theatre did “A Tuna Christmas Tree”, Farm Bureau Insurance, Girl Scout Troop 2797, and many others participated, some honoring the memory of lost loved-ones, others promoting causes, like anti-bullying. There is even a Hanukah Display sponsored by Alan and Faith Goldstein.

CLARKSVILLE ACADEMY
Winter Carnival Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Clarksville Academy recently held its annual fundraiser. The PTO hosted the event, which offered a variety of reindeer games for students and their families to enjoy. “Students from various classrooms set up their own carnival games,” said Sally Allen, CA's Director of Marketing & Development.. “All the money they raise goes back to their classroom." Wet weather caused this year's Jingle Bell Jog to be rained out, but inside, the buildings were bustling with activity as hundreds of supporters moved about the campus..
Beth Biter & Kathy Babb
“We had an auction for all the themed baskets put together in each classroom like the Titans basket and the APSU basket,” Allen said. “The junior class held an auction as well. They had some fun things as well, like Head of School Jennifer Hinote's parking space for a week, Predators tickets, CMT Awards tickets and a week in Orlando.”

MAYOR VS. GENERAL
BROOMBALL GAME
Story + Photography by Lucas Ryan Chambers
For the second consecutive year, the Montgomery County Mayor’s office has challenged the soldiers of Ft. Campbell to a friendly game of broomball. This event took place at Downtown Commons outdoor skating rink. People from all over the area showed up to watch as the two teams battled head-to-head for bragging rights. It was all in great spirits, though, and a great way for local members of the community to show their support for the Mayor Jim Durrett soldiers of Ft. Campbell. Broomball is a sport much like hockey although the players wear shoes and use brooms instead of hockey sticks. For many it was their first time to play broomball. Montgomery County came away with the win. Keep an eye out for next year’s game to see who will be victorious.

STORY BY LIESEL SCHMIDT PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA TRAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY
When James Matthews initially received a rejection letter from APSU that denied admission because of his grades, he could have taken the news as a sign that college wasn’t in his future. But rather than allowing it to deter his plans, he took the steps needed to be admitted, proudly graduating and then moving on to get a Masters in Business Administration, later using the knowledge he gained to secure a position working with the county. And now, he says, “The rest is history.”
“I want to bring in businesses that pay higher wages, which ultimately helps improve the quality of life. In hopes of accomplishing that, I also always urge more people to spend locally because it helps create additional jobs throughout our community.” As the father of three, he has a vested interest in the future generations of Clarksville, and much of his work relates to how it can be bettered for them. “I believe it’s vital to engage our future youth and make them feel connected to our community. If they feel no direct ties here, they’ll be more inclined to leave and be drawn away to bigger cities nearby like Nashville when they grow up. We must sow seeds into our young professionals in the hopes that after cultivation there will be a harvest,” he contends. Himself a young professional, he has personal experience with the impact that those individuals are currently making, and he sees the need to keep the ball rolling. “When I started working with the IDB, one of my job responsibilities was to get involved with Clarksville Young Professionals. After a few meetings, I quickly understood the importance of having such a group, and I wanted to be involved as much as I could. After continuously being involved over the years, I got the opportunity to be chairman. Being ready and available created more opportunities, and I now sit as a cabinet member for TVA Young Professionals in Economic Development,” Matthews explains. “If you’re looking to build relationships, develop professionally, and become politically and philanthropically active, come join Clarksville Young Professionals!”
History is still in the works, however; and in his position as the Director of Economic Development for the Clarksville-Montgomery County Industrial Development Board, Matthews is helping shape the history of his community, working to find ways to attract not only more business and increase the population, but also to grow its economy. And as someone who loves his community, he couldn’t be more fitting for the job. “My passion is helping people—especially the people of Clarksville,” says 32 year-old Matthews, a 14-year resident of the city.
“I believe it’s vital to engage our future youth and make them feel connected to our community... We must sow seeds into our young professionals in the hopes that after cultivation there will be a harvest,”

Winter Baroque Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Clarksville's award-winning Gateway Chamber Orchestra returned to Madison Street United Methodist Church to present the seventh installment of Winter Baroque, a holiday tradition featuring music from Handel's “Messiah" and Bach's “Magnificat.” GCO, under the direction of Greg Wolynec, began the nearly 2-hour program with J. S. Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 1, BWV 1066 featuring Janice Crews and Amy Mitchum, oboe; and Amy Gillick, bassoon. Next was Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for 2 Flutes, Op. 47, No. 2 featuring Angela Reynolds and Lisa Wolynec, flute. Lastly, A. Corelli's Concerto Crosso, Op. 6, No. 1 was performed, featuring Emily HannaCrane and Ryan Cockman, violin, and Meghan Berindean, cello.
Beth & Mark Ring
After a brief intermission, Douglas Rose took the baton to direct the choir in three traditional a capella works from the Baroque period. The choir and orchestra were then brought together to perform Connie Richardson Cantata BWV 142 by J. S. Bach.
& Charlsie DeLoach
The concert concluded with the audience being asked to join in the performance of two traditional carols, O Come, All Ye Faithful, and Hark, The Herald Angels Sing arranged by David Willcocks. It was an afternoon of timeless music beautifully performed inside the beautiful Madison Street UMC that will not soon be forgotten.

CLARKSVILLE CLIMBING New Year's Eve Glow Party
STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY CENTONZE Clarksville Climbing hosted Clarksville's most unique New Year's Eve event, a glow party. Sam Montague and his family took a big step in 2018, opening Clarksville Climbing, an indoor climbing facility that offers challenges for climbers of all skill levels. “Right now, we are bouldering only,” Montague said. “Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that is performed on small rock formations, or rock walls known as boulders, without the use of ropes or harnesses. But, we are looking at other types of climbing instruction as well.” Clarksville Climbing offers climbing and learning opportunities for anyone, ranging from age four all the way up to a professional climber. “We currently offer a Bouldering Basics class,” Montague said. “We are also about to start Fitness for Climbing, which is basically a course on how to become more fit, and physically able to rock climb. But, that's more of a course than a single class. “It's going to focus on specific exercises that will help balance the body and get you ready for some serious climbing.” More information can be found online at www.clarksvilleclimbing.com, also on Facebook or Instagram. Clarksvile Climbing is located at 119 West Dunbar Cave Road.

Guests began arriving at 7 p.m., at which point they entered the dining area for a dinner that included broiled chicken, pork roast, and the traditional greens, and blackeyed peas. Afterward, everyone gathered in the large assembly room, where they were greeted by festive holiday decorations, including party favors, noise makers, and hats. That's where the fun was taken to the next level. “We had 84 people who partied until after midnight,” Holleman said. “The evening was a big success. We all enjoyed a nice dinner, and then I think everyone really had fun dancing to the live music from Scotty Dean & the Showdown Band. It was a great way to start the new year.”

Story + Photography by Tony Centzone Music at Grace, a concert series at Grace Lutheran Church, recently presented a performance by Jason Coleman and Meagan Taylor, two outstanding musicians with ties to Nashville music royalty.
Whitney & Ben Anderson
Coleman is the grandson of Floyd Cramer, an American hall of fame pianist and one of the architects of the Nashville sound. Taylor is the grand niece of Chet Atkins, known as “Mr Guitar,” and “The Country Gentleman”. He Alida & Bob Jones is credited by Rolling Stone Magazine as inventing the “pop-wise 'Nashville sound,'” and is ranked by them at #21 on a list of the greatest guitarists of all time. The Sunday afternoon performance was free to the public and featured more than a dozen songs, many of which were holiday-themed. “This is their third time here at Grace,” Grace Lutheran Church, Sr. Pastor Larry Peters said. “They both grew up with country music. Jason actually appeared on television with his grandfather when he was just nine years old, and Meagan is an amazing guitarist and vocalist. he mutual friends who introduced them might have applauded their success at making a good match, but it was the sounds of strangers clapping that served as the soundtrack to their engagement when Sam King proposed to Amy Rushing along the banks of the Mississippi River in St. Louis on July 31, 2017. And just over a year later, their family and friends were once again given reason to applaud—and shed a few tears—as Amy walked down the aisle at Naimoli Estate on October 6, 2018, wearing a sleeveless V-neck champagne-colored gown with delicate lace detailing to meet her groom, his dirt-caked farmer’s garb replaced by the crisp, handsome look of a man anxiously awaiting the woman he adores. After exchanging their vows under the gazebo behind the mansion, the newly wedded Kings joined their guests in a reception held in the estate’s spacious barn. “I loved that everything was in one place,” says 27 yearold Amy, a clinical dietician. “I got to stay at the venue all weekend, which made everything really easier.” Simplified by the all-inclusiveness of it though it might have been, there was hardly anything simplistic
about the beauty of their chosen venue. “It was so pretty everywhere you looked, and I don’t think we could have asked for better scenery for our photos.” Having dined on a delicious Italian-inspired spread that included chicken alfredo, lasagna, Caesar salad, and breadsticks catered by the Country Cupboard, the couple got things going on the dance floor, busting out their moves while the live band played. And while most receptions have their sound system at the command of a DJ who takes a break to encourage toasts by the wedding party, it was an impromptu karaoke session by their friends that broke into the chosen set of wedding songs. “It was so funny!” Amy recalls. Before heading off to their honeymoon, Amy and Sam sliced into a fourtier white wedding cake adorned with burgundy flowers created by the talented baker, Jan Dixon, leaving their celebration on a sweet note as they—once again—heard the sounds of happy applause.

ome people use statistics in search of their perfect match, but in the case of Mary Morgan Baggett and Levi Primasing, it simply took meeting at a statistics class to put them in one another’s paths, proving that love isn’t about the numbers—unless the numbers are combining two hearts into one. With a bond that deepened even further over the next two years, when Levi proposed on a date night in August of 2017 by having their dog, Nellie, wear a sign that popped the question as he knelt behind her with a ring, the only statistical outcome was for Mary Morgan to happily say yes. Just over a year later on October 13, 2018, wearing a white silk trumpet-style dress with floral lace detailing on the skirt and hair styled by Lindsey Parker at Lyndon’s Salon, Mary Morgan walked down the aisle at The Silo, where an expectant Levi waited to make her his wife. “The Silo had the most perfect space tucked away in the back for my dream outdoor ceremony,” says 22 year-old Mary Morgan, who, like Levi, works in the medical field. “The Silo itself is just breathtaking, so we didn’t even look at any other venue because I fell in love with it right away; and their staff was a dream to work with as we planned out the details of our day.” Having exchanged their vows amidst the lush, rural setting and surrounded by floral arrangements created by J.Botanical—“One of the things about my wedding that I could talk all day about were my flowers!”—the newlyweds celebrated their union with their guests by feasting on a unique spread of food catered by Fire and Ice, offering a Cuban Slider station and baked potato bar as well as Bourbon Chicken Skewers, Avocado B.L.T bites, beer cheese dip, and a cheese and cracker display. “It was the most amazing food!” says Mary Morgan. After dancing and dining, the couple cut into their cake, a three-tier mixture of vanilla and chocolate layers covered in simple white buttercream made by the talented pastry chefs at Joelle’s Bakery in Hopkinsville before escaping the crowd to divide back down into two—the two hearts that truly now were made one. BREAKING the rules THE OFFICIAL VIP GUIDE TO NON-TRADITIONAL WEDDING TRENDS Story by Liesel Schmidt
“Anything Goes” Bridesmaids’ Dresses
Invite the Pets
For the non-traditional bride who trusts her ladies’ sense of style, it can be fun and freeing to let your bridesmaids come in the dress of their choosing. Now that’s one way to ensure they’ll be able to wear it again!
Dogs are being given the welcome almost everywhere these days, so why not let your guests bring their pups to the wedding as well?
Let Them Eat…Donuts? Who says you have to have cake? Try alternatives like frozen yogurt or ice cream buffets, donuts, cupcakes, cookies, or whatever sweets make you swoon.
Flower Grandmas Grandmas are a special part of your lives, so incorporate them into your wedding by having them serve as flower girls.
Co-Ed Bridal Parties You both have special guys and gals in your life, so give them all the opportunity to be your attendees as bridesmen and groomswomen. 48 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Picture Perfect Weddings
Here Comes the Truck Wedding food is pretty boring and often the same across the board, so why not have a food truck cater your special day? You’ll get fun food that no one will forget, and what’s not to love about that?
Equal Opportunity Bouquet Toss
White Wedding?
There’s more than one single lady longing to tie the knot, so forego the traditional bouquet for one that breaks apart into multiple flowers and really spreads some love!
If you’re not married to the idea of a white dress, switch things up by wearing a gown in your favorite color and having your bridesmaids wear white instead.
Include Your Kids So many couples already have kids when they meet at the altar, so who’s to say you can’t make them part of the vows? As you and your future spouse exchange your I Do’s to join your lives, you’re also joining the lives of your children into a newly formed family, so make vows to them as well.
I Now Pronounce… Have your officiant be anyone you wish by first having the official paperwork witnessed and signed by a legallysanctioned individual who will also be handling the filing of the paperwork by the deadline. That means your best friend, your dad, or even a sibling can preside over the ceremony and marry you on your big day.
Parental Hand-Off The father of the bride might traditionally give his daughter’s hand to her groom in marriage at the ceremony, but isn’t it only fair that all of the parents take part in giving their children to one another? Have each full set of parents present their son and daughter to one another so that no one is left out of giving their blessing.
Forget the Bouquet If flowers aren’t really your thing, have your bridesmaids carry something else that better reflects your personality, whether it’s another type of plant life or even something as off-the-wall as teddy bears.
Think Like a Kid If you’re having a small wedding, make things more fun by doing something totally unexpected like renting out a party room at a local amusement park or sports venue like a mini golf course or a bowling alley. You’ll be covered for reception space to have your food and drinks, and your guests will have the chance to play!
Get the Full View It’s hard to see the bride and groom’s faces during the ceremony, but those priceless expressions are the best part! Make sure your guests can see every silly little smile and every single tear that you and your intended exchange while you’re at the altar by having the officiant stand with their back to the guests while you stand facing all those dearly beloved who have gathered to see your bliss. way to honor their service to our community and country, and he ran the idea by Charlie Koon to get things started,” Marcia explains of the event, which all took place on November 3, 2018.
The wedding of every woman’s dreams is something that begins to take shape in childhood, when little girls begin to imagine themselves walking down the aisle to their very own Prince Charming in a beautiful dress that makes them feel like part of a fairy tale come to life.
“The main reason behind Nathan’s idea of executing several weddings in one day was the fact that he’d heard that most military couples are not able to plan and execute the kind of weddings they’d want due to the demanding schedules that a soldier has,” she continues. “They must be ready to serve and be available to leave for a mission at a moment’s notice. We saw this with one of our couples on the morning of the wedding—the soldier was called in, and we were all holding our breaths as we waited to see if he would be released in time for his wedding. Happily, he was released just in time!”
Unfortunately, the wedding of one’s dreams isn’t always possible, as finances often prevent the scope of the vision from being truly realistic. For couples in the military community, especially, this is all too often the reality. And not only their budgets are limited, as their schedules are so often at the mercy of the orders on which they are called, sending them off for months at a time and separating them from their families and friends and ultimately limiting their window
for pulling together the event that should be nothing short of magical. On THIS day of all days, when they wear not the uniform of service to their country, but the garb of men and women walking toward the selfless service of love, they should be able to have all that they can imagine and more as their sacrifice is finally given the due it deserves. Making that possible was the very thing that inspired Marcia and Nathan Clark to begin Campbell Combat Ceremonies at the Ruby Cora, the highly popular event venue they run in Adams, Tennessee. Hoping to bring every aspect of the dream wedding to life, the Clarks came up with a plan to offer everything— from wedding prep to the last send-off at the reception—to deserving military couples, and area sponsors showed their love with RSVPs to provide their services free of charge as well as the funds needed to pull it all together. “Nathan came up with the idea of giving away luxury weddings to our military men and women as a very personal
In all, 128 couples applied to the call for applicants, with the final selection of the winning couples made randomly by computer and then announced at a reception at The Ruby Cora during which
everyone was introduced to one another and the couples were given the chance to meet their dream team—the selection committee, the sponsors, the vendors, and their personal assistants for the big day, whom Marcia calls their “Fairy Godmothers.” “After many hours of planning and community support, we were able to create luxury weddings for four of the couples who had entered submissions and 20 guests each, complete with an outside ceremony at The Ruby Cora and full amenities including hair and makeup services by a professional team, bridal bouquet, officiant, and a reception with a full meal, champagne, beer, wine, a wedding cake, photographer, and DJ services as well as transportation for each of the couples in new Cadillacs from the reception hall to the ceremony site. It was amazing to see it all come together and to see our message come to life—that we love and support all of the sacrifices made by our Fort Campbell soldiers.” Getting in on the big day, 22 local businesses offered their services and support to fund the event, proving that they truly do appreciate their military community and recognize their selfless bravery, knowing that it comes with the cost of separation. “Our local businesses realize the family sacrifices they make are quite significant, and being part of this was a way for them to give back,” Marcia says. “It was truly an honor to work on this project,” says Koon, VP/ Director of Corporate & Military Business Development at F&M Bank. “We’re very blessed to have so many active duty soldiers, veterans, and their family members live in our community. It was an unbelievable day!” February 2019 | www.vipclarksville.com • 51

charm of their venue. “It was a dream come true, like being at home and having the wedding at home that I’d dreamed of since I was a little girl. The entire team there was such a great help in bringing the day to life, and it was just an extremely special time,” says 27 year-old Carolyn, who spends her days working as a teacher.
Just over three years later on July 7, 2018, Zack and Carolyn sealed their love in a ceremony at Naimoli Estate, walking down the aisle to the music of a string quartet and exchanging their vows in front of their family and friends as they stood under the gazebo before beginning their celebration in the barn. Wearing a Rebecca Ingram ivory ball gown, Carolyn looked every bit the elegant princess for her Prince Charming—himself dressed a far cry different from the garb he wears in his work as a coal miner—the elegant, vintage-inspired detailing of her dress perfectly matched to the sophisticated
Although the couple could have easily lost their cool when the ring bearer’s pillow was temporarily MIA, the rest of their day was all that they could have hoped for, complete with a tasty buffet of Southern food including shrimp and grits, pork tenderloin with apple apricot chutney, beef medallions, Gouda scalloped potatoes, and veggies catered by Artisan Kitchen as well as a delicious naked cake whose layers of chocolate, white, and chocolate swirl could easily satisfy everyone on the guest list. Making it sweeter still, the cake was made by a close friend; and for those looking for a little more variety, there were strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate cupcakes worthy of a good swoon.
aving been friends since high school, it might not have been a huge surprise when their relationship turned romantic; but when Zack Baird enlisted the help of their dog, Annie Mae, to propose to Carolyn Fisher on March 5, 2016, the birthday girl got more than she could have wished for when she blew out the candles on her cake— she got a sparkly ring that meant her fairytale was about to come true.

NO TINY
Story by Liesel Schmidt | Photography by HouseLens + Authentic Photos and Designs
To see the photos and read the reviews of the so-called “tiny house” that claims its very own little patch of earth tucked away near an old farm and tobacco barn in a quiet spot of Clarksville, you’d never assign the fully renovated 1923 farmhouse any other description than charming, and that’s one of the very things that Richard and Shannon Dixon aimed to achieve when they created A Tennessee Tiny House and decided to launch it as a bed and breakfast in 2017. Working together with local contractor Doug Nail, the Dixons modernized the house just enough to bring their vision of a modern farmhouse to life, making its 900 square feet of indoor space feel open and airy, lightfilled and relaxing in a way that would offer a sense of calm and peace in the midst of the city. Clearly, this home is hardly tiny in appeal, and it definitely delivers on romance. With its full-sized bedroom and bath, living room, kitchen, and dining area as well as a loft with two double beds, the house is certainly not lacking in space—or in amenities, as it also features two deck areas and a fire pit perfect for stargazing around a campfire or watching the slow path of the sun as it rises and sets. It stands to reason, then, with so much on offer, that A Tennessee Tiny House would capture attention when it hit the listings on VRBO and AirBNB. But its rise to fame across the nation has been meteoric, garnering five stars with AirBnB and earning the rank of Superhost, the highest rating achievable; and everyone from lone travellers looking for a unique little escape to newlywed couples on their honeymoon have kept this charming little farmhouse booked for months in advance. “We love hosting and being hospitable, so we love to find out what the occasion for our guests’ stay might be and then personalize their experience by finding out about things like their favorite snacks and
their interests,” says Richard. And what a fantastic experience they provide—especially to newlyweds and bridal parties, as they offer packages designed to cater to the blessed event and make it absolutely unforgettable, filling every last inch of this tiny house with love.

he total solar eclipse on August 22nd, 2017, might have been highly anticipated by millions all over the country as a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon, but for Katie McNary and Christian Charlesworth, the day was special for reasons unrelated to the spectacle in the sky. For even though the sun and moon might have been stealing the show, it was Christian who was stealing Katie’s breath— and her heart—when he got down on one knee to propose with a ring whose sparkle rivaled anything in the heavens. Having met at a mutual college friend’s game night, Katie and Christian clearly shared a love of fun, and when they stood facing one another at the altar on September 22, 2018, at Events at Tranquility in Adams, Tennessee, their laidback personalities were unmistakably at play. “We wanted something outdoors with a nice view and a really laid-back relaxed vibe, so Tranquility was really the perfect place for us with a gorgeous home overlooking a field with a pond and cows wandering around. That was actually one of the reasons we chose the venue, and they helped us achieve our perfect day!” says 24 year-old Katie, a trainer and the Director of Operations at Prime Fitness Clarksville. Dressed for her walk down the aisle to Christian, a drum tech, in a strapless white mermaid gown with lace overlay and hair and makeup artfully done by Stacey Trinkle at Amity Salon, Katie was a vision that eclipsed everyone’s hearts; and after the couple said their vows with their guests looking on, the happy crowd dined, danced, and toasted the blessed new union. Having satisfied their hunger with a feast of chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and rolls catered by The Choppin Block—“It was casual but delicious comfort food, which made it a perfect fit!”—the event was sweetened by Katie’s own creation, a four-tier funfetti confection frosted with homemade vanilla buttercream decorated with sprinkles and a cake topper from Etsy. Adding to the sugar rush that fueled the energy on the dance floor and heightened gameplay on the lawn even more, the couple had a custom donut wall that sent everyone off on a sweet high as they made their own escape into a night filled with stars and happy dreams. WEDDING AND EVENT SHOWCASE Story + Photography by Lucas Ryan Chambers Guests packed the Wilma Rudolph Event Center for another extraordinary year for the area’s largest Bridal Expo. This year’s main sponsor was Nicoletta’s Catering, one of the busiest caterers in town. Brides lined up just to try some of the samplings the caterer offered for the event. Brides-to-be and their guests visited with representatives from local venues, florists, cake designers and dress shops. Along with being able to make all the arrangements they would need for their big day, there was also a runway show to present this year’s latest trends and even giveaways for some lucky winners. The event, which is hosted by the City of Clarksville’s Parks and Recreation, is a yearly event. So be sure to watch out for next year’s date and get your tickets before they are gone.

eing in the college band might be considered a bit geeky by some, but for Kara Golladay and John Foster, being band geeks was what initially brought them together. And after the two met as bandmates in Murray State University’s Racer band, they became sweethearts whose futures seemed destined to last well past the last notes they played on the field. Having taken a trip to Garden of the Gods in Illinois in June of 2017 to explore their famous trails and embark on a new adventure together, it could have been an unnerving situation that derailed anyone’s plans for romance when the pair had to hit up a trail that was more secluded than the trail they’d planned on hiking. But rather than getting truly off track, they enjoyed the unexpected romance of it all, and John seized the opportunity to take a knee and propose—though not before the 24-yearold electrician short-circuited and temporarily lost his words.
When the question finally came, it was met with a “Yes!” and eighteen months later on December 1, 2018, Kara walked down the aisle at Burdoc Farms wearing a white long-sleeved chiffon A-line dress with lace accents to meet her groom at the altar while friends from Murray State played softly in the background. “When we went to look at the venue, I absolutely fell in love with it!,” says Kara, a 24-year-old nursing assistant. “It was rustic and so picturesque, and I knew the beautiful land would make a great background for all of our pictures.” After exchanging their vows, the newlyweds celebrated with their guests at their reception, dining on an array that included ham, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, macaroni and cheese, and rolls—“comfort food!” laughs Kara. Feasting done, the dance floor was kept busy by the talented DJs of Songbird before the newly-joined Fosters cut into their strawberry and vanilla wedding cake, later heading off into the night as former bandmates turned soulmates playing together in a song called life. he “new girl” in school naturally captures attention, but when Selena Seate flagged down Ryan Cordova after she’d watched him play a game for their high school’s football team, her many questions not only captured his attention—they captured his interest in getting to know her more. But nervous as they both might have been during that first exchange, it did nothing to sideline a relationship; and over the next few years, the pair became almost inseparable. Years filled with love, memories, and even the birth of a little boy later, Ryan finally took the ring he’d had for months and decided to pop the question late one quiet July night at home in 2017, the 24- year-old welder ready to fuse their bond forever. Nearly 18 months later on November 10, 2018, Selena wore a long-sleeved vintage-inspired ivory lace gown, feeling every bit the beautiful bride with her makeup done by Taylor Storey and her hair elegantly styled by Say & Alie McCall as she walked down the aisle at The Silo to meet Ryan at the altar. “It was 30 degrees that day, but I was hell-bent on having it outside in front of that beautiful venue!” laughs the 24-year-old bank teller. And with the exchange of rings and vows completed, the newlyweds joined their guests in a reception held in the massive barn at The Silo, their breathtaking décor accented by floral arrangements by Florals by Kailee. As BJ the DJ from Springfield— “He was absolutely awesome!”—played their playlist and kept the party vibe running high, all those gathered dined on a buffet of Brazilian chicken, pecan smoked pork, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, green beans, and dinner rolls catered by Fire and Ice Catering. “It was hearty and delicious!” Selena recalls. With dinner a happy memory, the couple cut into the sweetest part of their reception—an impressive display of five white cakes with champagne icing and apple butter filling, each with a different décor—created by The Peanut Butter Sucker. As day faded into night, the couples were sent off on their honeymoon—the football player whose interest was caught by the new girl now a husband madly in love with his new wife.

Q & A WITH
Katie + Dee
VIP: Where did you meet?
K+D: Dee and I met at church at Hilldale Baptist Church Family Life Center. VIP: Please describe the proposal. K+D: We were planning a family photo shoot with our four kids this fall at Dee’s house and had been working all week to coordinating it. Meanwhile, Dee and my mom had also been working together on the perfect proposal. I found it strange that Dee seemed so stressed out over the photographs, but I figured he was just trying to make it special for us. When we arrived at the house, it was stunning. Dee and my brother asked me to come outside and make sure everything was where I wanted it. But I could tell that something was up! We took some “test” shots and during one of those shots, Dee got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. I’ve always told Dee that all I needed for a proposal was a “string and a promise.” He made a string ring and attached it to the ring box, and it was completely us: unbroken, woven together with the Lord, and symbolic of the union we’re about to enter. As far as the ring goes, we picked it out together, and the lace design represents the intertwining of our lives and families into one. I can’t stop staring at it! VIP: What was the first thing you did after you got engaged? K+D: We squealed in giddy excitement, then we went inside to tell our kids! They were with their grandmothers (who were in on the whole plan!) inside the house. VIP: Have you chosen a date? Venue? Theme? K+D: We are getting married September 14, 2019 at Owen Farm. It’s going to have a sweet, sophisticated, Southern feel. VIP: What is something you and your fiancé like to do together? K+D: We love spending time as a family, all six of us! Our favorite things as a couple, though, are doing Bible studies together, going to the ballet and to TPAC (Tennessee Performing Arts Center) performances. VIP: Will you go on a honeymoon? K+D: We’re still planning it, but it’s between the Caribbean or Ireland! VIP: What is a fun fact about you as a couple? K+D: We speak fluent GIFs and Friends quotes. We can have entire conversations between the two!

Love Lights a Tree Story + Photography by Lucas Ryan Chambers Since 1989, the Love Lights a Tree event has been an annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. For the past two years, Tennova Healthcare has been the host for the event and has had the ceremonial tree in front of their main hospital. Every year, more and more guests arrive to see then lighting of the tree, which is done by an honorary chairman. The chairman is someone who has been directly affected by cancer, and this year’s Honorary Chairman was a gentleman that the community knows personally-Mike Robinson. He was surprised at the event with the honorary title, and after the flick of a switch, lit the Christmas tree, which had thousands of lights. The Immaculate Conception Choir was there singing Christmas songs for everyone to enjoy, and Tennova Healthcare graciously provided refreshments. This is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the local American Cancer Society and has been one of the longest running traditions for many local families. Ryan Windham & Alex Villa

BOWEN COMBATIVE ARTS ACADEMY
Soldier Christmas Dinner Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Donnie and Michelle Bowen of Bowen Combative Arts Academy recently held a Soldier Christmas Dinner at Restoration House in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The event was free for soldiers and their families, and it included live entertainment, dinner, games and prizes. “This is the third year we have held our annual Solider Christmas Dinner for soldiers and/or military families,” said Michelle Bowen. “It's just a fun way to get these families together and show them our support.” The Bowens provide much of their support through Battleground Perazim. The name was inspired by a Bible story depicting David's second battle.
Donnie & Michelle Bowen
“We look at what a lot of soldiers and their families are going through,” Bowen said. “For them, it's very much like a second battle that is fought after their soldier comes back from war. So we help these families with housing and shouldering the wounds of war. We help them deal with combat stress. We're there for them if their car breaks Abel & Stephanie Reyes down, or if their house is hit by a tornado.” The group also helps with smaller needs like childcare to free the parents for appointments. On average, Battleground Perazime offers assistance to about a dozen families each year. We want to say thanks to the good people at Restoration House for opening their doors and helping with this event as well as the folks from Mission Force, and everyone who helps us help others.” For more information or to become involved with Battleground Perazim, the Bowens may be reached at www.Facebook.com / Bowen Combative Arts Academy.

DIETARY TIPS
your heart will love
76 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Picture Perfect Weddings
BROUGHT TO YOU BY TENNOVA MEDICAL GROUP Keep your cardiac health in the best possible shape by choosing nutrient-rich foods that are low in sugar and unhealthy fats.
Foods That Can Sabotage Your Heart Healthy Diet
The foods that we put on our plates can make or break our wellness goals. So choose wisely.
You have been working diligently to fill up on heart-healthy fruits, vegetables and fiber-filled whole grains. Well done! Eating healthy foods is only one piece of the puzzle if you are trying to improve the well-being of your heart. Limiting your intake of salt-laden, sugar-rich items is also important. Skip these menu items:
The American Heart Association recommends foods that contain an abundance of vitamins and minerals, such as fiber and protein. What you don’t eat also matters—look for foods that are low in saturated fat, sodium and trans fats.
Key Ingredients If you are looking for a few superfoods to add to your heart healthy diet, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommends: • • • • •
•
Dairy foods that are low-fat or fat free Eggs, legumes, lean meats, poultry and other proteinrich foods. Fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as mackerel, salmon and tuna Fruits and vegetables Oils and foods high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, including avocados, salmon and trout, almonds, pine nuts and walnuts, and canola, sunflower and corn oils Whole grains
Get creative as you cook to support cardiac health. Try different flavors and combinations and incorporate seasonal ingredients to keep your menus as inspiring as they are nourishing.
• •
•
Processed meats—Deli meats, such as bologna, sausage and turkey, are typically preserved with nitrites and salt. Refined grains—Items like white rice and bread may cause blood sugar spikes. They’re also missing lots of the nutrients found in their whole grain counterparts, such as dietary fiber and phytonutrients. Soda—A 12-ounce can of this bubbly drink can pack as much as 10 teaspoons of sugar and more than 100 empty calories. To keep your diet on track, consider sugar-free teas and low-calorie juices instead.

Each organization helped play a role in last years Wags and Wings Family Fun and Oktoberfest and will again September 28th and 29th of this year. The event also featured a brief choir performance by the West Creek High Advanced Choir lead by their director Blake Gority. “It was an honor to have such a great turnout from our leaders and business professionals, we love connecting such a diverse and vibrant business community.” said john Patterson, the Airport executive.
