Nicoletta's at the Club
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze
Exciting news for Clarksville's food scene as Nicoletta's at the Club makes its much anticipated debut at the Clarksville Country Club. The menu features items like Pommes Frites – russet potatoes tossed in a bacon & duck compound butter, and a Braised Short Rib marinated in a red wine jus served with mashed potatoes and heirloom carrots. “A lot of private clubs are partnering with a restaurant,” said Virginia Nicoletta. “It produces revenue for them and opens the club to a larger audience.” Nicoletta says the project came together over a period of about six months and has turned out to be a great fit. “We were looking at a couple of options this past year,” stated Nicoletta. “But this one came together wonderfully, and it has just been such a smooth process. We did a three-night soft opening and packed the house each night. Two nights were for club members and one was for friends of Nicoletta's.
Reservations are recommended at this time. There is also the Greenside Grill, located downstairs, where customers may walk in and order. Nicoletta's at the Club will be open for lunch Tuesday – Friday from 11a.m. - 2p.m. Dinner will be served Wednesday – Saturday 5p.m. 9p.m. Hours will change with the coming seasons. And, good news, the catering business will still operate in its original location.

Story + Photography by Tony Centzone Dozens came out to Fairholme (the John Street house) in Cadiz for the 2019 Chocolate Affair, an annual event that raises money for the Janice Mason Art Museum (JMAM). Jean Martin was JMAM's Committee Chair for this year's project, which drew dozens of supporters to the elegant home to enjoy a delightful assortment of chocolate confections and some great live music from local artist, Leight July.
Birgit Billham & Geneva Parris
“I've been involved with this fundraiser for 14 of the last 16 years,” Martin said. “In spite of us competing against several other events at our fundraiser we had a great turnout. This is always one of our most fun events. Everyone who comes absolutely loves it. But, every year I talk to people who don't know about the event.”
Bryan Blaylock
Martin says the event is always held on the first Saturday of February, and all of the treats are made by volunteers, including many by JMAM's board members. “We have a wonderful museum, but I'm sure we have people living in Trigg County who have never visited our museum,” Martin said. “I wish everyone would visit and discover JMAM.”

One Year anniversary A M E R I C A N P R I D E F I T N E S S & B OX I N G Story + Photography by Tony Centonze American Pride Fitness and Boxing Academy reached a milestone recently that called for a celebration. Music and good food was served in honor of our 1-year anniversary,” said Pride's Kelvin Garcia. “We also had some local vendors on hand. We are a small business, and we try to keep the love going with other small business owners.” Garcia is well known in the community, which led to an unusual business-funding model. He had been coaching and teaching boxing in the area for a long time. When this opportunity arose, parents and others were quick to donate and show their support. Kelvin & Natasha Garcia
“We are a veteran-owned business,” Garcia said. “We opened this business without any loans. This business was made possible by community donations. We raised more than $60,000 to open this gym. Currently there are about 350 members this first year.”
Jennifer & Matt Castner
American Pride offers Junior boxing and Youth boxing programs, accommodating students ages 6 and up. Adult boxing and fitness classes are also offered. Garcia says there is something available for everyone. He and his team help his students compete in amateur boxing events as well. YOUNG LEADERS BIG CHANGES Story by Liesel Schmidt Photography Courtesy of Lead United
Community issues are something that affect us all, but so often they’re viewed solely as the responsibility of adults to take the lead in directing things—seeking out the solutions to problems, moving political issues through various channels to get laws passed and important decisions made. We sidestep the fact that the future of our communities is directly tied to the younger generations, as well, overlooking their potential to not only take an interest in the current events that are shaping their world, but also to affect a change. It’s youth-led programs like Lead United that work to alter that and create a new perception and a new expectation, drawing in high school-aged students to form leadership councils focused on taking various issues that their community is facing and taking steps to do something about them in whatever ways they can. It’s a hands-on approach that teaches them everything from how to raise awareness about community concerns and formulating solutions to implementing plans of action; and since its inaugural launch in Clarksville-Montgomery County, the Lead United Student Service Council has been proving that the future has incredible potential. Focused on addressing community concerns through service projects and volunteerism, each of the council’s student service ambassadors are tasked with helping implement community projects that address important issues such as food insecurity, homelessness, and even sexual assault. Above all, the objective of the United Way’s student program is offering an opportunity for “Service Leadership:” serving first, leading second—two goals combined in a singular mission of enhancing student leadership skills in community service activities, expanding student-based volunteer opportunities, encouraging
collaboration amongst students from different local area schools, and informing student leaders about serious issues and needs throughout their community. In 2018, Lead United in Clarksville took on one issue that truly hungered for attention: food insecurity in Montgomery County. “Developing a plan to fight hunger in Clarksville is crucial because of the overwhelming statistics for Tennessee,” says Lead United President Sarah Lange. And overwhelming they certainly are, as nearly 1,000,000 people struggle each day with hunger throughout the state—more than twentyfive percent of whom are children. So what could be done that would truly make a difference, beyond just handing out food? “A problem we’ve noticed in Clarksville is that many do not know how to prepare the food they receive from food distribution programs such as Manna Cafe. As a result, food is wasted and the families go hungry,” Lange says. The solution presented itself in an unexpected way: creating a cookbook of inexpensive, nutritious recipes. Unfortunately, one of the challenges the council faced was lack of funding. However, after Veterans United was presented with a grant proposal requesting that the organization fund 500 cookbooks, they were not only granted their initial request—they were given enough to fund 2,000 cookbooks. The creation and production of the cookbook, along with their service project of handing them out, cooking one of the featured meals, and distributing food to their community members in need is just one example of the power of student leadership. They are our future, and the future starts now.
United Way is accepting applications for Lead United through March 22nd. Current sophomores and juniors are encouraged to apply. For applications, visit school guidance counselors or visit www.liveunitedclarksville.org 22 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Real Estate Home & Garden 2019

The trail includes 17 locations of historical significance and three world-builders who had international and national influence. While researching African American history in Clarksville for a different project, Shana Thornton, Legacy Trail creator and director, was inspired to create the trail when she realized nothing like this existed. Candace Woodbury & Beth Poppas
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze The Fort Campbell Spouses Club recently hosted a Farewell Party for Beth Poppas, wife of Major General Andrew P. Poppas, who has been Commanding General, 101st Airborne Division for the last two years.
Marissa Bazzano & Kristin Brown
Beth Poppas greeted guests as they entered the party, which was held at Cole Park Commons. “We have been here since January of 2017,” Poppas said. “We would love to stay longer, but we are moving back to D.C., back to Fort Myer, which is where we came from to be here. We are in that triangle of Fort Bragg, Fort Campbell and Fort Myer. I must say we have thoroughly enjoyed our time here. I have a speech prepared that I will read later tonight, and I'll probably cry because we do love it here. This place is a family to us.”
Jessica Jensen & Nicole Miller
The facility's main ballroom was packed as Poppas's friends came to say goodbye, prepared for an evening of fun, food, live music and good friends. “Tonight, we are saying farewell to Beth Poppas,” FCSC President Colleen Murphy said. “They are leaving us after two short years of Maj. Gen. Poppas's tenure as Commanding General of the 101st Airborne Division, and headed back to Washington, D.C.
Kari Moore & Pamela Holz
“Beth has been a huge supporter of all things Fort Campbell, especially the FCSC, so her presence will definitely be missed. She has made a lasting impression on all of us here.”

Story by Liesel Schmidt Photography Courtesy of Operation Stand Down Tennessee
Whether they’ve served four years or 24 years, one fact remains true regarding veterans: they all deserve respect and gratitude for the sacrifices they’ve made during their time in uniform and to be honored in every way possible for their bravery, heroism, and selflessness. Unfortunately, separation from active duty service and transition back into civilian life can bring them challenges that seem insurmountable, as they must often start from square one in every way, from finding jobs to finding housing. All too often, those challenges leave them feeling alone and abandoned by the country that they’ve served, and many veterans find themselves jobless and sometimes even homeless. Finances are strained, family relationships are tested, and the emotional battles become a part of life that can take down even the most welltrained soldiers. Fortunately for these men and women, organizations like Operation Stand Down Tennessee make it their mission to provide them with the tools and support they need to be successful in their 28 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Real Estate Home & Garden 2019
new lives, offering them guidance that often proves invaluable in giving them the best possible future. “OSDTN focuses on helping all veterans and their families by engaging, equipping, and empowering them; and we offer a wide range of services, including employment assistance, VA benefits assistance, networking, and housing,” explains OSDTN Clarksville Operations Manager
Willie Celestine, who has been a part of the Clarksville location since it first started serving the needs of the Fort Campbell area in 2014. “Unfortunately, Federal grants cover only housing, but financial support is also needed to provide other services for Veterans and their families—and that’s truly where we make the difference. The needs are ongoing—so our mission here isn’t one that’s ever fully completed—but the work that we do is extremely important, and seeing the changes we make in these veterans’ lives is one of our greatest rewards.”

“I volunteer and assist many local organizations and groups, but this group has my heart smiling every time I walk in or out of the doors. It’s a group of dedicated individuals that I’m proud to support, represent, and donate to,” adds Farmers Insurance agent Danielle Stack, who works closely with OSDTN in the Clarksville location as a committee volunteer. “The Clarksville community would not be what it is without Fort Campbell, so we consider these individuals to be extremely important. This is just one way that we work as a community that serves veterans throughout their lives, and it’s an amazing thing to be part of.”
“I volunteer and assist many local organizations and groups, but this group has my heart smiling every time I walk in or out of the doors. It’s a group of dedicated individuals that I’m proud to support, represent, and donate to.” - Danielle Stack A quick look at the statistics proves just what the organization has achieved, with nearly 3,000 veterans having received services in the Veteran Service Centers in 2018. Nearly 300 veterans found or upgraded their employment through OSDTN’s Career Services Department; and 125 veterans participated in the Transitional Housing Program, with 77% leaving successfully. 1,814 veterans and their families were assisted in filing disability claims, and 218 veterans and their families received financial assistance to either move from being homeless into permanent housing or to remain in their homes. Over 600 veterans received free clothing items, and more than 300 volunteers contributed their time to the Veteran Service Centers. In comparison with previous years’ numbers, that’s a firm step in the right direction, and there’s no end to the mission in sight. “Every veteran counts,” says Stack. And every veteran’s service deserves to be saluted.

Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Major General Brian Winski became the 47th Commanding General of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) in a recent ceremony at Fort Campbell's Parade Field, as Major General Andrew Poppas relinquished the post. In his speech, Maj. Gen. Poppas praised the community (Clarksville, Tennessee, Fort Campbell, Hopkinsville, Kentucky) for its embrace. “My family and I have been fortunate to be stationed here at Fort Campbell multiple times,” Poppas said. “This community has welcomed us with open arms every time. You've exceeded all expectations, and I want to thank you.” Maj. Gen. Winski is no stranger to Fort Campbell. He has served and deployed with numerous Fort Campbell units, most recently as Division Operations Officer in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2009. He leaves his post as Chief, Legislative Liaison Office of the Secretary of the Army for his new post at Fort Campbell. “I can't begin to describe how proud and honored I am to be standing in front of this great division as the next Eagle 6,” Winski said. “To the 'Screaming Eagle' troopers on the field, I'm honored to once again join your ranks and wear this awesome patch. I've probably worn 'Old Abe' on one shoulder or both every single day in uniform from 1989 to present.”

Champions of Fort Campbell
Sandra Cochran, Donald Cochran & Charlie Koon
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Charlie & Traci Koon
The 2019 Champions of Fort Campbell induction ceremony was recently held in McAuliffe Hall to honor three people who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to “champion” Fort Campbell and its operations.
Col. (Ret.) Jimmy Blackmon & Carol Stanley
This year's honorees were Sandy Cochran, Donald Cochran, and Charlie Koon. Major General Andrew P. Poppas and Command Sergeant Major Todd W. Sims oversaw the induction. “When General Campbell started Champions of Fort Campbell, he recognized community leaders and began putting their names and faces on this wall,” Koon said. “When I was notified that you wanted me to fill a space on this wall, well it's pretty intimidating. I don't know if you've ever looked to see who is there--Jack Turner, Mr. Kimbrough, the Harpels and Mr. Freeman. It's almost impossible to feel worthy, and I am truly honored to be a part of this.” Beginning with Traci and Lexi, his wife and daughter, Koon thanked a long list of people whom he felt helped him earn this recognition.
Col. Joe & Sarah Kuchan
Leeann & Lt. Col. Dean Patterson
“I call all of the champions the catalysts of the community,” said Major General Andrew P. Poppas.. “They are the pillars who have been here, historically. They precede me. They have embraced our mission. They are just as important as the soldiers themselves who execute our mission. They understand exactly what we are being asked to do, and they set the conditions for our success.”

Sweetheart Cake Bake
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze
Brenda Harper & Bill Summers
Smith-Trahern Mansion recently held its annual Sweetheart Cake Bake, a fun and delicious fundraiser that raises money for the preservation and restoration of Clarksville's historic mansion.
Christal Wentz & Michelle Newell
Debby Johnson has been Mansion Director since 2009. “This is our 35th annual Sweetheart Cake Bake,” Johnson said. “This year we had more than 100 entries. Each year, local businesses and individuals sponsor cakes, other good folks bake the cakes, and then the finished products are brought in to be judged on appearance, consistency, and most importantly, flavor.” There were ten categories for this year's various entries, including cheesecake, coconut cake, coffee cake, and seven other categories.. A winner was chosen in each category, and the winners received a ribbon. From those winners, a second round of judging determines the grand prize winner. “In the main hall, all the bakers are treated to a luncheon,” Johnson said. It's an afternoon of great food, entertainment, and a little education.” Debbie Hardwick & Lee Anne Orgain
Fran Powers & Carlye Sommers
While the bakers were out front having fun, the judges suffered through the daunting task of tasting dozens of delicious cakes and choosing a favorite. This year's Grand Prize winning cake was created by Michael Lankford.

Glowing Skin is In Story + Photography by Tony Centonze
Amity Salon, located in Downtown Clarksville, recently hosted a different type of event at which Amity's professionals and clients were provided the latest information on skin care. “We are hosting our first skin care event called Glowing Skin is In,” said Amity Salon owner Tonya DeRose .“The women who attended this event got a quick test to help determine which skin type they are, and then we sent them to the appropriate station so they could learn how to take care of their particular skin type.” Aveda Territory Manager, Patti Bankston, was on-site to answer questions and make product recommendations.
Tonya DeRose & Patti Bankston
“Patti oversees the Nashville / Middle Tennessee area,” DeRose said. “She is an educator on skin care and will make sure our guests get all the information they need. We will also be talking about foods and beverages that are good or bad for different skin types. The wrong items can inflame your skin. So we are really taking a holistic approach to the subject of skin care.”

Tommy Bates of Legends Bank talked about the history of the monument project and recognized the individuals who were involved in bringing the project to fruition. He also spoke about Pastor Terry's decades of contributions to this community.
Jimmy Terry Jr. began with a quote from his father: “Whatever I have done, whatever I have said, that glorified my God and was a blessing to mankind, to God be the glory,” Terry Jr. said. “He meant that. He inspired people in this town. When I go downtown and see these local businesses with signs out that say 'Jesus', that's what he wanted to accomplish in this community … Pastor Terry always said, 'Clarksville is a great place to live.'”
Mayor Joe Pitts spoke briefly, ending his remarks by leading the hundreds who were gathered in a song, as “Pastor Terry

Megan Chris
&
Having first met in college at the University of Tennessee at Martin, it wasn’t until Megan McKeen and Chris Benne started dating a few years later that they realized they were truly soul mates. And after four and a half years together, it seemed that the greatest gift Chris could give Megan was his heart, though the path to proposing is not always without a few complications along the way… “I almost ruined it!” Megan laughs. “Chris decided he was going to propose on my 30th birthday; and I had planned a get-together with our friends to celebrate, so he had to move on to plan #2. I had to run an errand before we left for dinner in Nashville; and while I was gone, he called and said he had driven our dog Zeus over for a walk down at the Riverwalk in downtown Clarksville and that his tire had ‘gone flat.’ When I arrived to pick them up, I called to say I was there. He still wanted us to take a walk, but I didn’t have a jacket and was cold. To convince me to get out of the car, he gave me his jacket…Looking back, he was fumbling with that jacket quite a bit before handing it over! We walked down a little closer to the river, where he started ‘the speech.’ I may have blacked out a little, because I don’t remember everything he said; but I knew that this was THE MOMENT. After his sweet words, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!”
“He chose my ring because it blended a vintage look with gorgeous diamonds and a hint of rose gold. He did a wonderful job!” - Megan
Now planning an October wedding at East Ivy Mansion in Nashville, Megan is happily flashing the beautiful ring that Chris chose for her at McKenzie & Smiley. "Chris knew that they’re the number one jeweler in this area. Their customer service is second to none, and ALL of their rings were beautiful. He chose my ring because it blended a vintage look with gorgeous diamonds and a hint of rose gold. He did a wonderful job!”

2 Annual Q Awards Banquet nd
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Q Realty recently hosted its 2nd Annual Q Awards Banquet to recognize the achievements of its growing team of realtors who have made that company one of the top producers in the Clarksville-Montgomery County market. Tara and Norman Quirion are the power couple behind the company, which has quickly grown to include about 80 top local agents. “We presented production awards at the Sango Event Center,” Tara Quirion said. “Our largest award went to Courtney Henderson, who was our top producer this year. We also gave out the Q'ster of the Year awards to Michelle Corkrean and Shelly Barlow. That award is for someone who gives from their heart. They come and help with all our community projects, and that means a lot to us.”
Tara & Norman Quirion
Several others at the banquet were presented with custom hand-made Appreciation Pins. Quirion says the pins are given to people who play a pivotal role in Q's success.
Bethany Obendorfer & Chad Ohlmann
The evening also featured heavy hors-d'oeuvres and a special appearance by Riley Jenkins, an Elvis impersonator. “I want to convey how thankful I am for our growth and how proud I am of all of our agents who work so hard,” said Quirion. “We wouldn't be Q Realty without them. The Men & Woman
That Build Clarksville The Men and Women
WHO BUILD Clarksville Story by Liesel Schmidt Photography by Josh Vaughn Sponsored by Reda Home Builders + Q Realty
46 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Real Estate Home & Garden 2019
There are so many people on the front lines of developing a city that get all of the “face time and the credit, from the Realtors who sell homes and properties to the builders and architects whose names grace the blueprints for the plans and have their logoed trucks and offices showcasing their own contributions to the cityscape. Theirs are the names that spring from our lips first when we think of the growth of our community, the ones whose cards we pass along when our dream home becomes a reality. But what about the many men and women who go without the credit they truly deserve for the work they do? The framers and painters, the electricians and the plumbers, the roofers and the drywallers and the tile workers whose hands have been so crucial in creating the vision, whose backs are sore at the end of the day from the taxing labor they perform, whose sweat and energy and skill have all gone into putting every last piece into place. They are the reason our homes are standing, the reason they have the foundation of strength that they do. And as the foundation of the labor forces that build the communities all across the country, they should be recognized as the important individuals they are. Unfortunately, all too often their skill levels are marginalized by messages that a college education is the only path to career success. But as newly elected Governor Bill Lee has recently stated, trade schools and apprenticeships are an important method of learning a valued skill that is vital to the community. It is in the field that expertise is learned, with tools in hand and true work being done; and that should never be overshadowed by the simple lack of a college diploma.
Beginning as young as middle school, Lee believes that teaching the skills needed for trades is invaluable and something that will greatly strengthen the workforce of Tennessee going forward. To that end, he also highly supports the creation of company-offered vocational training programs and foresees that these alternatives will greatly benefit students who do not have plans to attend college after they’ve graduated. Regardless of their level of schooling, however, tradespeople and skilled workers are undeniably the strength of the workforce—and in Clarksville, those people are getting their due. “Q Realty is proud to honor these men and women, who are truly the backbone of the real estate industry. Without their commitment and craftsmanship, there would not be a product for us to sell; and Q Realty would like to extend our most sincere thanks for all they do for Clarksville Montgomery County,” says Tara Quirion, who co-owns Q Realty with her husband, Norman and is partnering with Reda Home Builders in new projects that they believe will greatly benefit the area. “We also want to thank Reda Home Builders for being willing to reach outside of the norm and try something fantastic and new!” As a city—a community—built by the work of so many people, Clarksville is all the greater, all the stronger, and all the more beautiful a place to live.
“Reda Home Builders understands best the importance of high quality craftsmen and women within our industry. We are so excited to showcase the talent and workmanship behind Reda Homes. Coming to a neighborhood near you.” - Rick Reda

MISSION:
MORTGAGE Story by Liesel Schmidt Photography Courtesty of Veterans United Home Loans
More than anyone, perhaps, veterans know the importance of feeling at home—of finding that one special place that becomes a touchstone and an anchor. But with frequent changes of duty stations, coupled with the often all-too-stretched finances they face, many members of the military—both those actively serving as well as those no longer in uniform—are met with challenges when it comes time to buy a home. Far too often, these men and women who have given so much of themselves find that their hopes of homeownership are just out of reach; but Veterans United Home Loans breaks the mold by doing exactly what every mortgage lender should be doing: thanking them for their service by serving them back. It’s that very mindset that is at the heart of every branch of Veterans United across the U.S.; and when they considered opening a location in the Clarksville/Ft. Campbell area, they found their perfect representatives in a team of local mortgage lenders who were already carrying out that mission of serving the military. In 2011 when they were presented with the opportunity to become the Veterans United Home Loans Tennessee Branch, the call of duty was too strong to ignore. Having worked in nearly every department of the mortgage industry and boasting more than 25 years of experience, added to the fact that she herself is the granddaughter of a veteran, the daughter of a veteran, and the spouse of a veteran, Amanda Dusenberry understands the particular challenges military members and families face and has a heart to help them as well as the knowledge needed to secure them the financing assistance they need. “Veterans United Home Loans has a strong set of values that underpins everything we do and every interaction we have. We strive to be the best mortgage provider and to be recognized as a valuable and unique resource for military homebuyers and their families and remain an influential and inspirational figure in the community,” says Dusenberry. “Our values are easy to remember, and every team member knows them by heart: to be passionate and have fun, to deliver results with integrity, and to enhance lives every day. Living those values out consistently is our main objective.” And that mission is clearly being carried out successfully, as Veterans United is the nation’s #1 VA lender, having closed the most VA loans in the nation in 2018. “We want everyone who does business with us to come away feeling like they’ve had the best experience possible; and because many on our staff have personal ties to the military, we have a sincere appreciation and respect for the active duty members, veterans, and military families with whom we work.” And that’s a call of duty worthy of answering.

Story by Liesel Schmidt Photography Courtesty of Pinterest
As you probably already know, the front of your house and the landscaping in your front yard is crucial to creating curb appeal. It’s real estate 101, right? Really, it’s the first impression you make on anyone who walks by your property or visits your home. And while you may think that doing the bare minimum to slide on by without attracting much notice is good enough to coast through the year, incorporating a few simple ideas with a bit of intentional landscape design can transform your ordinary property into something truly stunning. Curb appeal? You so got this! You don’t have to have a truly bonafide front porch to add those same kinds of accents and details to the front area of your home. Use walkways as an opportunity to add in some interest and line them with potted plants and flowers that come in different shapes, sizes, textures, and color. Love a color story? Think about working from darkest shade to lightest with each pot down the path to create an ombre effect. Clustering plants is also a great idea. Whether you’re planting them in actual garden beds near the entryway or using potted greenery and flowers, use height to your advantage. Use pots and planters of different height to create a staggered look, but also work with plants of different stature. Use the tallest plantings in the back, then slowly work your way down to lower and lower heights so that all of them get their share of time in the limelight. Love creepers? Try putting a few touches like climbing plants around porch columns or along the railings of any steps that you have. They’ll grow in fuller throughout the year and look amazing when they’ve reached peak growing season, and it’s a great way to bring a lot of bang without a lot of bucks. If you’ve got existing flowerbeds in your front yard, set them off with complementary pops of color by hanging potted flowers from the awning; and if your home has a formal feel, place sculptural topiaries on each side of the doorway. Whatever you do, stay true to your own style. After all, your home is an expression of what you love—and expressing that is when curb appeal is at its best. 52 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Real Estate Home & Garden 2019

Supplies: • • • •
3 terra cotta pots (graduated sizes) Acrylic paint (2 colors) Potting soil Small plants or flowers (prepotted)
Directions: Fill the largest pot 3/4 way with potting soil. Place the pot of the next smallest size in the center. Arrange small flowers and plants around the rim, then remove them each from their individual pots and plant them in the soil. Fill in around the plants and the smaller pot with more soil. Repeat the process in the next pot to create tiers, then use the smallest pot at the top and plant with a larger plant with interesting height and texture. Use the acrylic paint to paint your house number or last name on the largest pot. March 2019 | www.vipclarksville.com • 53
Relying on Passion Story by Liesel Schmidt Photography Courtesty of Reliant Realty
With so many people flooding in and out of Tennessee each year as they move from other areas of the country or relocate away from their current home in the Volunteer State, there’s no shortage of demands on the real estate market. Homes need to be bought or sold, properties need development, communities need to be given the means to grow. All of that requires shepherding, and it’s firms like Reliant Realty ERA Powered that have the task firmly in hand, providing teams of skilled Realtors who are not only knowledgeable about the industry, but also passionate about serving their clients with excellence and dedication. Originally founded in 2009 with a single office, Reliant Realty now boasts over 700 agents in five locations throughout Middle Tennessee— one of which is located in Clarksville. And while expansion could easily have dulled its original standards, Reliant still maintains its goal of offering superior service to its clients—no matter what their needs might be. “One of the things that sets us apart in the industry is the fact that our agents are highly educated, while being held to a higher standard. Everyone is encouraged to complete more than the standard state requirements regarding continuing education and to seek out additional professional designations, which expands our agents’ ability to provide the best service to our clients,” says Randy Whetsell, Director of Brokerage Services of Reliant’s Clarksville office. A retired Chief Warrant Officer who served at Ft. Campbell before transitioning into civilian life, Whetsell holds a unique perspective of the needs of military clients, and that strength has served him well in
helping further the success of his brokerage—success that has clearly earned them attention and demanded the need for further expansion. “The Clarksville office has grown to the extent that we need space to accommodate everything we’re trying to do here,” says Whetsell, going on to describe a new location whose more than 20,000 square feet will offer state-of–the-art offices for its nearly 90 existing agents as well as any others who join the brokerage. “We’re doing amazing things at this office and closed out 2018 with over 1,200 closed units and over $248 million in volume. As a company, Reliant Realty ERA Powered is ranked third in units and fourth in volume within the ERA franchise of more than 14,000 offices worldwide, and we’re incredibly proud of being a part of that,” he goes on. “Our Relocation department closed out 2018 with over $70 million in volume; and the Clarksville office is ranked GOLD within the CARTUS relocation network, placing us at #1 for this region.” As a full-service office that has Secure Property Management, Signature Title Services, and Relocation Services that includes both CARTUS and Corporate relocation, Whetsell and his brokerage in Clarksville are fully equipped to work with a wide range of clients, with the addition of a new Clarksville Commercial & Land Division only expanding their repertoire. Regardless of area of expertise, however, passion for their work is a shared characteristic of every agent, as is their desire to progress. “Everyone here knows that they’re armed with the right training, tools, and education to serve the clients and that we want them to succeed.” That success is built on reliability—and that’s something that they put their name behind.

As a first time home buyer, my wife and I were overwhelmed and unsure of where to start. After meeting Felicia our feelings towards buying a home changed. She made every step as easy and smooth as possible. Listening to what we wanted, she found us the perfect home.
From the first moment I spoke with Felicia I was impressed with her knowledge, professionalism, attention to detail, ability to act quickly and her desire to have a complete understanding of the needs of her clients. Felicia brings back "old school" values of business with her personal touch.

Working with Felicia was a dream come true! She was always available to answer our many questions or to show us a house. Because of her hard-work and expertise, finding our first home was a breeze. We are grateful to have met and worked with such a professional Realtor and we look forward to working with her in the future. - Thommy and Paige
Not sure where to start, but I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Felicia Long and her team of professionals. We had a rather interesting situation to say the least but Felicia was there for us at every step of the way at all hours of the day and night. We are so blessed to have been referred to Felicia. I don't know that we would would have had the wonderful outcome we have without their expert knowledge, advice, and support. If you are looking for a home in Clarksville, Felicia will undoubtedly devote her time to you and get you in it. I'll be coming back to Felicia Long in the future.
Felicia is, hands down, the best Realtor! We contacted Felicia shortly after receiving orders to PCS to Ft. Campbell. She was knowledgeable and helped ease our minds as first time home buyers. We flew in to Clarksville with only a short time to browse homes and pick the right one for us. Felicia really went above and beyond to help us. And she was extremely patient with us as we went back and forth between potential homes. Once we decided on our home, the rest of the process happened while we were back at home, 10 hours away. Felicia kept us updated frequently and often checked on us to see if we needed anything or had questions. She made the process smooth and seamless. We highly recommend Felicia to anyone looking for a home in the Clarksville area.

The home and garden show brings together residents, and vendors who can assist them in planning their upcoming projects. “This is our 10th Annual Home Show at the Wilma Rudolph Event Center,” Clarksville Area Chamber's Melinda Shepard said. “We have a lot of our Chamber members here showcasing their products and services, so we invite everyone to come out and visit us during this two day event. Shepard acknowledged our area's bad luck with the weather this spring, but said the event still had a great turnout, and that the vendors were very happy. Tammy Stanford & Sue Bryant
“We always hope to share new ideas,” Shepard said. “This show features all the things that are trendy and relevant, so we hope lots of folks can find what they've been looking for, or maybe see something new that inspires them in some way.”

Story by Liesel Schmidt + Photography Courtesy of Centurion Stone
CHOOSE YOUR STONE FROM OVER 25 PATTERN DESIGNS & 200 COLORS OF NATURAL STONE. Both amazingly resilient and uniquely beautiful, stone comes in every texture, color, size, and shape one could possibly imagine, fashioned and sculpted over time by the unpredictable whims and often-merciless processes of nature. But as technology has done with so many of nature’s secrets, it has cracked the code of creating a manmade product that could easily pass for its naturally occurring counterpart. So great is the resemblance, in fact, that manufactured stone is being used with increasing frequency both for interior applications as well as on the outside of homes all over the world. A great deal of its appeal lies in its luxurious look, to be sure; but aesthetics alone are not the greatest argument in its favor in the great debate of natural versus manufactured stone. Adding to that weight is the greater degree of durability, the customization, and the ease of maintenance. “Manufactured masonry stone provides unequalled durability, unique appeal, and natural insulation to a home, which are all qualities that homeowners appreciate and consider worthy of investment,” says Kenny Kramer, Manager of Operations for Centurion Stone. Under the ownership of Larry McCoy since the early 2000s, Centurion Stone has established itself as a local source for all things stone, from sales and selection to fabrication and installation. “We want our clients to find a product that will meet their needs and provide the look that they’re envisioning, so we work with them to find the perfect type of stone and really customize the selection process.” In addition to their wide selection of manufactured stone, Centurion Stone offers a variety of complementary accessories such as mantles. “The quality of the product we provide, coupled with our expertise in masonry and the service we provide, is something we have become known for,” Kramer says. “The end product we achieve is really something that we feel speaks for itself.” And like stone, that’s a degree of excellence that stands the test of time.

A TITLE OF EXCELLENCE Story by Liesel Schmidt Photography by Josh Vaughn
Real estate is a huge investment that often comes with many layers of considerations—not the least of which are the standard issues of monthly budgets for mortgage payments, renovations of any kind that may be necessary, maintenance, property taxes and fees, location... these are the things that immediately spring to mind as people enter into the stage of life when they’re planning on investing in a home or piece of real estate. But an often overlooked piece of the puzzle is title insurance; and with so much riding on the legalities of purchasing, selling, or refinancing real estate, that’s one component that should never be taken lightly.
“We pride ourselves on the fact that we are a concierge title service and offer our clients a level of excellence that they might not expect to see elsewhere... The experience of purchasing that home or commercial property is often stressful, and the Concord team will do everything in their power to make the transaction as enjoyable and as seamless as possible.” - Eric Lehman With so much legalese involved, however, it’s incredibly difficult to understand it all. Fortunately for the average buyer or seller, there are experts in the field who can offer their guidance and walk you through every step—from identifying any existing complications in the transfer of titles to proper filing when the sale or purchase of a piece of property goes through. Having a trusted partner in all
of this is extremely important, and with a history of more than ten years of setting and exceeding industry standards, Concord Title has a reputation of excellence in Tennessee that it’s proud to bring to the Clarksville-Montgomery County market. Adding Clarksville as their fourth location, the firm is actually a joint venture between Concord Investments, LLC and Clarksville Attorneys Eric Lehman and William Johnson of Lehman Johnson, Attorneys at Law, PLC. Bringing their experience in the law into the mix adds an invaluable resource to the closing process; and with this newly created team, the Clarksville offices expect nothing less than to further the achievements of an already successful firm as they serve the needs of their expanded market. “We pride ourselves on the fact that we are a concierge title service and offer our clients a level of excellence that they might not expect to see elsewhere. We understand that this is an extremely important transaction and that, in most circumstances, a home is the largest purchase someone can make in their lifetime. The experience of purchasing that home or commercial property is often stressful, and the Concord team will do everything in their power to make the transaction as enjoyable and as seamless as possible,” says Lehman. “It’s the little touches that matter and that give them confidence in our abilities, and they’ll see and feel that the minute they walk in the door to our offices. Our friendly staff and atmosphere, combined with having a competent team led by two attorneys handling their title work from start to finish, gives them peace of mind about the entire process.”

THE Q MOVEMENT Story by Liesel Schmidt | Photography by Andres Oliver + Submitted by Q Realty
Real estate is a crowded industry that’s extremely competitive, which makes standing out from the rest all the more difficult as the years go by. It can also be tremendously risky, as the housing market experiences surges and recessions that all affect an agent’s ability to make their goals and keep their income stable. For those with a passion for the industry and a love for working with people, however, real estate is an amazing opportunity to help grow their communities and help make people’s dreams of homeownership come true. It’s that wonderful balance of love for people and for their community that made Tara and Norman Quirion such a natural fit for opening Q Realty in 2017, creating a brand new type of brokerage for the Clarksville area that uses a set-fee structure rather than the traditional sales percentages. “We believe that we are in a relationship business, which fosters an enormous amount of trust. Q’s agents trust in the strength and support that the company provides, and our clients trust us to do our very best for them,” says Tara, proudly noting that, since opening, Q has consistently held a top placement in the ClarksvilleMontgomery County market share. “One of the things that has really contributed to our impact in the real estate industry is that Q makes every effort possible to be a strong backbone for each and every agent without costing them an unreasonable amount, offering a low cap with no penalty even if they don’t happen to cap,” she explains. “The structure isn’t based
on percentages; instead, we have a set-fee structure. Q believes that, with the growth of technology through such platforms as Zillow and Google and the ability for anyone to own their own website, the need for the franchise name—and the fees that come with it—is a poor investment. We’ve found that there is a need for a strong brokerage without the added franchise fees, and those agents can find a home with Q Realty.” Clearly, their structural strategy has worked; and over the past two years, they’ve experienced explosive growth in their flagship Clarksville office, with the addition of a newly built state-of-the art location offering even more room for the expanded reach they anticipate. Designed by Lyle Cook of Martin Architectural Firm, the new offices are a point of pride that Q Realty believes will only extend their reach and further their success at the top of their field. “There are approximately 1100 agents in the local CAR association. We have approximately 80 of those agents, which tells me that we have room for growth. Q’s overall goal is to be the best it can be; to always be hungry; to work smarter, not harder; to work hard and play hard; to always be good, solid stewards of the community; and to continue to grow,” says Tara. “I believe that what sets us apart is our deep love for and commitment to our community. We are not a franchise that is owned by executives outside of the community,” she goes on. “We support our community…” And that community supports them.

That level of customer service is what has built our reputation for the past 58 years,” says owner Lee Ann Naghtin, who took over the store from her parents, Herb and Marilyn Hays. Over the years, Naghtin and her staff at Herb Hays Furniture have certainly seen trends come and go, shifting people’s tastes in everything from color schemes to design styles and material choices. “Many of our lines offer timeless pieces that can be kept in the family for generations as well as more trendy, fashion-forward pieces that can be changed as the current trends change,” Naghtin says. So what’s on the trend forecast for this year? According to Pantone’s predictions, the hot color for 2019 is living coral; and whether you want to add just a punch with throw pillows or fully commit to an occasional chair or a sofa, Herb Hays Furniture & Mattress has the perfect way to embrace the trend of the day and bring it all home.

Story by Liesel Schmidt + Photography Courtesy of Closet Design Properly organized, easily accessible storage is the key to success in any well-planned home; but if we’re honest with ourselves, most of us have that vision in mind without ever actually bringing it to fruition. We pack our closets and pantries with anything and everything, generally with the intention of keeping it all as neat and tidy as possible in the space that we have. And while we could probably “make do” with the builder grade standards of one or two shelves coupled with a few rods to accommodate it all, as time goes on, those closet spaces will inevitably become the abyss we hate to confront, packed full of items that never see the light of day because they have long been shoved to far recesses that will never be explored. Enter the professionally built closet, a veritable dream space of shelving and rods and drawer systems all perfectly installed and custom designed to make your life more…organized.
“From master bedroom closets to pantries and even in the garage, everyone deserves a well-organized home;, and a good closet creates the ability to do that by providing a place for everything and making it more accessible and easier to find,” says Larry McCoy, local closet expert and co-founder of Closet Design Specialist with his wife, Glenda. “It makes life more productive.” Originally created as a part-time business in 1985, Closet Design Specialist transitioned into becoming a full-time company a year later, building itself as a licensed dealer of Rubbermaid Storage Solutions and closet systems as well as other product lines offering home essentials including mirrors, shower doors, and window blinds. “Most closet companies only offer one type of closet system, but we’re able to install and design various distinct systems to meet any budget,” explains Larry. “In combination with our other products and our personal service, we can essentially be a one-stop shopping experience for our clients.” As the need for an organized home will never be obsolete, Closet Design Specialist’s success will never be lost in the abyss.

A HEART at home Story by Liesel Schmidt Photography by Josh Vaughn + Courtesy of Reda Home Builders

dedicated his career to working for the city—first as a streets worker, then as a firefighter—before pursuing the path of a business owner by opening a car dealership in 1998. Over the past 20 years, Rick Reda Auto Sales has proven itself quite the success; and while he could easily have rested on that accomplishment, the opportunity to break into the home building market was far too inspiring—and exciting—for him to pass up. “I’ve always been driven to succeed and open to learning as much as I can in business, and I was willing to take a chance on building new businesses,” he says of his decision to establish Reda Home Builders in 2009, later moving on to open Rick Reda Homes in 2013. The choice to create homes for his clients was a decision that resonated both professionally and personally, as he has learned over the years the deep connection that a home holds. In fact, his parents still live in the very same home that has been in his family since he was a child—and it’s that investment, both emotionally and financially, that Reda feels the quality of his own homes reflect. “I really take pride in my work and want to build the best quality homes I can,” he says.
There’s an age-old saying that home is where the heart is, and for Rick Reda, the statement is a literal one—in more ways than one. A former Army brat whose childhood could have easily meant a transient life bouncing from base to base as his father’s career progressed, Reda settled into a more stable life, setting down roots and feeling a sense of belonging as the community of Clarksville became more than just a duty station. It became a home that he would never want to leave. Throughout the early years of his childhood and into his youth, Reda’s family grew more and more ingrained in the community: his mother as a small business owner whose kitchen skills gave her restaurant a reputation for fabulous food, his father a dedicated Army officer whose character taught his son the importance of sacrifice and service. And as childish youth and immaturity gave way to the responsibilities of adulthood and a determination not only to make something of his own life, but also of the lives around him in the community he loved, Reda
“This is the biggest, most important investment that many families can make, so my greatest goal is to build a home that is well built and made to last for generations into the future. I try to put special touches throughout each home to set RHB apart from the rest, and I build every home like it’s my own.” Not an easy task, when the number of homes has climbed into the 800s; but the satisfaction he still feels even after all these years and all these houses is what drives him to maintain that standard of work. “I love seeing the smiles on a family’s face when they purchase one of my homes and knowing that what we’ve built here is helping make a difference in someone’s life.” Naturally, part of building any successful business in the community is feeding back into that community, and Reda has long made it a mission to do just that, actively participating in various organizations and giving financial support to numerous charities throughout Clarksville and the surrounding areas. “I’ve seen many friends fall on hard times, so when I have the means to help an organization or an individual cause, I love being able to do that.” Clearly, Reda’s heart is at home, building the beauty of the place that he loves one home—and one cause—at a time. For many years now, Champagne and Chocolate has been one of Clarksville’s most successful charity events, and this year was no exception. Held at one of Clarksville’s most iconic buildings--the Customs House Museum-- this event helps to raise funds for continued operation and to bring a variety of new and exciting exhibits to Clarksville. This event is a team effort with dozens of local businesses donating baskets for the hundreds of guests in attendance to bid on. This year saw record-breaking numbers, both with attendance and fundraising, and next year the event is already shaping up to be better than the last. This event only occurs once a year, but their next fundraiser is just around the corner with Flying High. Be sure to keep an eye out for the date and location because tickets always sell out fast.

It takes more than a morning cup of coffee to recover from the effects of lack of sleep. While you sleep, your body does a lot of essential chores: It repairs damaged tissues, secretes hormones and pulls the day’s experiences together into long-term memories. Without enough sleep, your physical and mental well-being can suffer.
Gut Health Your microbiome, the healthy bacteria that live mostly in your gastrointestinal (GI) tract and helps regulate your immune system and moods, relies on sleep to prosper. These organisms have a circadian rhythm based around your sleep cycle. When this rhythm is interrupted, they can’t influence your immune system as well. For instance, if you have inflammatory bowel disease, you may experience a flare-up. Other GI functions, such as regular bowel movements, also rely on regular sleep.
Mental Changes Your mind reaps sleep benefits in more ways than just a better memory. People who drive on fewer than seven hours of sleep are prone to accidents; in fact, “drowsy driving” can be nearly as fatal as drunken driving, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Drowsy driving causes more than 70,000 auto accidents each year. After 24 hours of steady wakefulness, a person has the reactions of someone with a blood alcohol content of .10, which is well above the legal limit in all states.
Maintaining Weight Sleep also helps with weight control. Of course, you can’t eat while you’re sleeping — but it’s more than that. At a behavioral level, people who are tired may reach for a sugary soda to perk them up. Meanwhile, at the chemical level, a sleep-deprived body produces extra ghrelin, the hunger hormone. A tired body also pumps out the stress hormone cortisol, priming itself to hang onto all the calories it can. So if you’re not sleeping at least seven hours a night, take a careful look at your habits. Find ways to work in more rest. Your mind and body will thank you.
Waking Up Tired? If you’re clocking plenty of hours in bed but still feel tired or doze off during the day, you may have sleep apnea, a common sleep disorder. Signs include: • gasping or stopping breathing for short periods during sleep • snoring or snorting while asleep • trouble concentrating during the day • waking up with a headache If you experience any of these symptoms, ask your primary care doctor about scheduling a sleep study. Tennova Healthcare – Clarksville’s Sleep Disorders Center is dedicated to helping you get a good night’s sleep. We perform sleep studies to aid in the identification and treatment of sleep apnea and other sleep disorders, such as insomnia, restless leg syndrome and daytime sleepiness. Wine & Chocolate AT B E A C H AV E N W I N E RY
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze A wine and chocolate tasting at Beachaven Winery turned out to be a big draw in spite of cool, rainy weather. “This is officially the first time we have done a wine and chocolate pairing, but we have held events around Valentine's Day in the past,” said Tasting Room Manager, Lindsay Head. “We are a little overwhelmed in a good way. We knew we were going to have a good response, and we have handled it well. We had enough wine and chocolate for everyone.” Beachaven Winery Owner, Louisa Cooke estimated about 350 people came to sample the wines and experience the unique pairings. “We did have a rush,” Head said. “Everyone came at the same time, and the lines got a little long. So we gave everyone wine while they were waiting, and they all seemed happy. The pairings are definitely worth the wait.” Amanda Allen & Cleopatra Jankulla
“We have a couple of new wines coming out this year. We have two seasonal wines, a dry white and a sweet white, that we will be bringing out for jazz season. Everyone is really looking forward to sampling these wines.”

Jazz on the Lawn's 2019 season begins on the second Saturday in May. Scheduling for some of the bands is still underway, but the dates are set and may be seen online at www.beachavenwinery.com.

RELAY FOR LIFE KICK-OFF PARTY
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Old Glory Distilling Co. was the site of the kick-off party for this year's Montgomery County Relay For Life, an annual event that raises money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. “Tonight is the Relay For Life 2019 Kick-Off for our event which will be coming up this summer,” American Cancer Alison Hurt & Meagan Smith Society's Director of Community Development for the State of Tennessee, Leslie Thrasher said. “So, we're just letting everybody know it's time for them to start their fund-raising. Also, this is an opportunity for people who haven't participated before, who want to form a team or get sponsorships, to find out about the opportunities we have for them.”
Amberese Browning, Porshia Austin & Nevaeh Rowser
Thrasher says now is the time to get information out to cancer survivors so they will know how and when to participate in survivor meals and survivor laps and the like. “There is something for everyone,” Thrasher said. “We do this to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society. Our event this year was bigger than last years kickoff, so that's encouraging. We had a great turnout in spite of the cold weather. Several new teams were represented, and a lot of our older teams were present as well." Last year's Relay For Life in Montgomery County raised about $100,000. This year, the goal has been set at $150,000.

DR. KEVIN Story by Liesel Schmidt
They say that your smile is like your business card, and in the case of Dr. Kevin Kennedy, Jr., it literally is. A fifth-generation Clarksville native whose childhood was spent on his family’s walking horse farm, the city could well be considered to be a part of his DNA, its dust and dirt and landscape known to him like the back of his hand. With community ties like that, it’s no wonder that the blue-eyed 33 year-old has been such a trusted member of the business community over the past six years, having been in practice as a pediatric dentist since 2013. Every child who wiggles in his examination chair, every parent who sits nervously watching on, is given the reassurance that the man with the gloves is looking out for their best interest, working to protect their beautiful little smiles and give them the tools they need to have the best possible check-up each and every time. “I focus every day on being a pediatric provider whom parents can trust,” says Kennedy, himself the happily married father of five children. “Many aspects of pediatric dentistry can be confusing or overwhelming for parents who really just want the best for their child, so I try to understand every family’s unique perspective and then partner with the parents to reach our common goal of oral health together.” Kennedy is clearly doing something right, as many Clarksville families are eagerly anticipating the opening of his brand-new practice in Sango. And while his time might seem quite booked enough with his office hours, he’s committed to further serving the needs off the community by working with Manna Cafe Ministries in addition to being an active member of Tennessee Dental Association, Eighth District Dental Society, and Clarksville Young Professionals. “Even as a lifelong Clarksville resident, CYP has really helped me grow my professional network and meet other young people who were
asking many of the same questions I have about growing a career, managing a family, and contributing to our community,” Kennedy says. “CYP has the unique benefit of connecting all sectors of our community—small businesses, entrepreneurs, non-profits, public service organizations, and government officials—all in one place, in a welcoming environment where young professionals can meet and increase their relational networks to make Clarksville better as a whole.” And with his own smile serving as his business card, Dr. Kennedy makes that environment seem all the more welcoming.

Night to Shine Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Tim Tebow Foundation's Night to Shine celebrated another special evening in Clarksville recently with the popular event drawing even more support than last year. “We had about 200 guests at the Community of Hope First Nazarene Church, all of whom have special needs,” First Nazarene's Leighanne Guthrie said. “We also had 500 volunteers on campus. This is our third year of coordinating this event, and it continues to grow each year This was by far our biggest one yet.” As guests entered the party, they were given a corsage or boutonniere. They were then taken by limousine to another building for the main event. When they arrived, they stepped out onto the red carpet where they were greeted by the paparazzi, who were there to cheer them on and make them feel special. “Once they were inside the main building they got a professional portrait taken,” Guthrie said. “There was karaoke where they could sing, and of course they danced. We also served them a full meal. By the end of the party— around 9 pm-- everyone was exhausted. They usually dance so much they don't eat. It was a very special night.”
