Happy summer, readers! As lovers of this season and all the fun it brings, we can’t wait to share with you all the great things there are to see and do in our area over the next few months and help you plan the best summer ever imagined. Save yourself some money, preserve your sanity, and explore all the great things there are to do locally! This being our annual Gentlemen’s Issue, we’re taking the opportunity to shine a spotlight on some of the amazing men living amongst us, serving our community both in their work as well as in their daily lives. Whether they work behind the scenes or are more in the public eye, they’ve all committed themselves to serving the people around them, and we celebrate them for that! We welcome one particular man of service as Major General Brian Winski takes leadership of Ft. Campbell, and we salute him for the ways in which he has served our country throughout his career. Also welcomed to Ft. Campbell is country music artist Jake Owen, whose love of America rings through in every note. As he sings out his support of the military with a free concert on post, we join him in standing to honor those in uniform. As always, we’re excited to present another issue, and we can’t wait for what’s next!

EXECUTIVE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP RECEPTION
hosted by Colonel Joe & Sarah Kuchan
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze About 60 local leaders gathered recently at the home of Sarah and Colonel Joe Kuchan, Garrison Commander, USAG Fort Campbell, KY, for an Executive Community Partnership Reception. “This reception provided an opportunity for Fort Campbell and leaders from Montgomery County, Clarksville, Oak Grove, Hopkinsville, and Christian County, as well as APSU and HCC to discuss potential and ongoing partnerships,” Kuchan said. “These partnerships include the $7.7M grant (through the Campbell Strong Workforce Partnership) to help military spouses and transitioning soldiers find employment, the recently approved animal control inter-Governmental Support Agreement with Montgomery County, the renovation of the Colonel Joe & Sarah Kuchan Survivor Outreach Services building, and multiple ongoing efforts with Hopkinsville, Oak Grove, Clarksville and APSU.”
Mayor Joe & Cynthia Pitts
Guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and cocktails in a casual outdoor setting on the grounds of the Kuchan's home. “This event,” Kuchan said, “which was hosted by the Fort Campbell garrison, also allowed the Fort Campbell leadership to thank surrounding community leaders for all the support they provide the Soldiers and families of Fort Campbell.”

LOAVES & FISHES Groundbreaking Ceremony
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze
Jon Clark & Tamara Long
Loaves & Fishes recently held an official groundbreaking ceremony at a 6-acre site on Crossland Avenue that will be home to its new 14,000 square foot facility. Dozens came out to show their support for the $1.5 million project that will greatly increase the charitable Jaimie Hll & Amanda Lamb organization's ability to serve its mission, providing food and other services to the homeless and less-fortunate in the community. Loaves & Fishes Board Chair Tamara Long said, “who would have thought 36 years ago, that this mission would be going and growing like it is? Right now, we have been at 1st Presbyterian Church nearly 20 years, and we have outgrown that space. We had to come up with a new location, preferably our own, which will give us more flexibility for the things we want to do as we move forward.” The new facility provides more space, will make the operation more efficient, and will allow for additional services, for which Long is excited.
Jeff Truitt & Jeff Bibb
“We will be able to expand all our missions,” Long said. “Under one roof, we will have warehousing, distribution, human services, and meals. We are not going away from meals. Serving food is what we do. So, that and sharing food with other organizations won't change. “Adding more human services will be the big change. Programs like Showers of Love, Blessing Bags, and more. We look forward to partnering with different groups, so we're not just food focused.”

Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Dozens of graduates of the Leadership Hopkinsville-Christian County program recently gathered for the 2nd Annual Alumni Reunion at Main Street Tavern. Cheri Farmer & Sandy Grogan
Guests enjoyed a great assortment of appetizers prepared by the Walter & Angelique Victor Tavern staff, some inspirational music, and a chance to catch up with old friends. Lea Martin took a moment to share her thoughts on the event. “This is our Leadership Hopkinsville Alumni Reunion,” Martin said. “Once a year we get to network, and just spend some time together. We've had 32 years of Leadership Hopkinsville-Christian County, and this is a great way to celebrate with so many of this community's leaders.” LHCC accepts applications until June 1st each year. Those accepted into the program then work together for almost a full year, beginning with a retreat in August, then meeting one Friday each month through the following May. “About 20 people go through the class each year,” Martin said. “The classes are divided into groups. Each group pulls a local non-profit and advocates on its behalf for a donation of $1000. The group that uses its money, researches, and presents best, wins.

“The Leadership class as a whole picks another community program for which to raise money. This year, it's the Cherokee Trail of Tears Commemorative Park. They'll be updating Roxane Thomas & Jack Monteverde lighting and fixtures inside the showroom, and also working on new sidewalks and stepping stones.”

Sara Nell Payne, the Director of St. Luke’s, stood at the finish line, covered in greens and blues, excited about the day. “We are having a Color Run fundraiser, and as you can see, we are pretty well covered in color, ourselves,” Payne said. “I think we had about 200 runners signed up. The community gave us an outpouring of support for which I have been so grateful. We have so many wonderful sponsors, and wonderful people signed up to run.” “This is a fun run, so the course is only about 2.4 miles long. We had a lot of people who just wanted to walk the course,” said Payne. St Luke Free Clinic can be contacted by phone at (270) 889-9340. LIVE FROM FT. CAMPBELL Jake Owen
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze
Thousands came out to Fort Campbell's Division Parade Field on a warm Saturday night for some cool country music from country star Jake Owen, who performed a free concert at this year's Week of the Eagles. Fort Campbell invited the community to join in the festivities. The party got started around 5 p.m. with inflatables and other activities in the Kids' Zone. Guests enjoyed some great offerings from a variety of food trucks, and there were plenty of cold beverages available as well. There was also a VIP area set up near the stage.
The live music kicked off at 6 p.m. when Terra Bella and Eric Paslay took the stage to warm up the audience for headliner Jake Owen. This year, Week of the Eagles ran concurrently with Military Survivor Appreciation Week. Retiree Appreciation Day was also part of the celebration. Throughout the week there were Unit Sports Competitions Combatives tournaments, the Run for the Fallen, static displays, an Air Assault / Fast Rope Insertion / Special Purpose Extraction System demonstration, and much more.

SALUTE TO SERVICE
A Man of Command MAJOR GENERAL BRIAN WINSKI
Story by Liesel Schmidt | Photography courtesy of Fort Campbell
Despite the fact that the position as Commanding General of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and Fort Campbell he now fills is a new one, Brian Winski is hardly a new face at Fort Campbell, as the highly decorated Major General served and deployed with numerous Fort Campbell units over the course of his career, acting as commanding officer of the 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, and the 101st Airborne Division both at home and during deployments. Clearly, he knows the workings on post intimately; and in his new station as the 47th commanding general of the storied 101st, he’ll be highly focused on keeping his Screaming Eagles at peak performance and ready for whatever comes their way. “Our mission is to be ready, and my commitment is just that,” Winski says. “Whenever and wherever the 101st is called…we'll be trained and ready for what awaits us. Screaming Eagle soldiers have always struck fear into the hearts of our enemies, and we will continue to do so. [Those] who have gone before us have forged an unparalleled history of valor and honor, and we will continue that legacy of valor and honor every day." Coming from a military family, Winski’s enlistment in the Army Reserves at the age of 17 could be considered fated; but when he joined, it was more than an act of following expectations. It was a personal mission, a choice that ran deep in his veins and created a passion to pursue the greater good. “I was drawn to the military at a very early age,” explains the 52 year-old Wisconsin native, whose father and mother both served in branches of the military. “I wanted to protect our country and our way of life and to be part of something bigger than myself.” Going on to serve in the Reserves and the National Guard while he attended college, Winski joined the Army as an officer in 1989; and from there, his career took him to 13 different duty stations to serve in and lead various units all over the country. Now back to assume 22 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Summer 2019
leadership at Fort Campbell, he will be “responsible for the 18,500 soldiers of the 101st, the 25,000 soldiers stationed on Fort Campbell, and the 45,000 family members that call Fort Campbell and the surrounding communities home.” It’s a major mission for this major general, but one he’s passionate about fulfilling; and he’s planning to make his soldiers the best they can be. “For the 101st, my vision is that we remain the world's premier Air Assault organization and that we are always at the ready for whatever awaits,” he says. “My mission for Fort Campbell lies in maintaining its standing as one of the Army's premier installations, where tough, realistic training takes place; where readiness is our watchword; where the ability to deploy is unmatched; and where taking care of our soldiers and our families are our top priorities.”
Boots On The Ground Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Each year, the front lawn of the 101st Airborne Division headquarters at Fort Campbell, Kentucky becomes a memorial to our fallen troops called Boots on the Ground. A memorial that is visited by thousands of friends, family members, and fellow soldiers during a period of time known as Week of the Eagles. This year's memorial was created by placing a single boot for each of the more than 7,600 Army men and women who have fallen since September 11, 2001. Each boot is adorned with the name and picture of the soldier it represents. The boots are lined up by date of death, and a small American flag is attached. The resulting display is visually stunning, and quite moving. At the Boots on the Ground opening ceremony, which kicked off Week of the Eagles, and Military Survivor Appreciation Week, Major General Brian Winski delivered some remarks to the crowd. “Words cannot express our gratitude and our sense of shared loss,” Maj. Gen. Winski said. “Each of these fallen soldiers leaves behind a family, and also their family in the service, where they forged bonds and ties with those they served with, that are the strongest imaginable ties that could exist between two humans. I know you know this, but their Army family, their brothers and sisters in arms, also grieve their loss every single day.”

More than 300 people were at the Wilma Rudolph Event Center recently to celebrate the successful 2018 -2019 fund-raising Kyle Luther & Sarah Wood campaign with United Way of the Greater Clarksville Region. “This is our annual board meeting, as well as a celebration for the campaign that we ran in the previous year,” CEO Valerie Guzman said. “Today we will give out awards for the workplaces, agencies and outstanding individuals who helped make this year's campaign such a success.” Lunch was served, and several awards were presented prior to the announcement of this year's fund-raising total. The Inspire Award was presented to Anthony Barnett, this year's Partner Agency Director Award went to Big Brothers Big Sisters' Chris Buerck, and in an emotional moment for many, the Ambassador Award was presented to former CEO Ginna Holleman. 2018-2019's Top contributing Workplace was Trane. The coveted Ben C. Parks Award was presented to Legends Bank. The award recognizes the company or workplace which has Cynthia & Mayor Joe Pitts conducted the best overall workplace campaign. Lesa Goder had the privilege of announcing the Campaign Chairs for the 2019 – 2020 Campaign, First Ladies Cindy Pitts and Mary Durrett. “We fell a little short of this year's goal,” Guzman said. “But, every year is a success, because no matter how much we raise, that money goes to help someone in need, in our community.”

Chalk Walk Art Festival
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze
Billed as “an inspirational day at the park, chalking it up,” the recent Chalk Walk Art Festival at Downtown Commons was a huge success, with thousands in attendance. Event organizer, Maria Haycraft was very happy with this year's turnout. “I would say it was a blast,” Haycraft said. “We more than doubled last year's attendance. More than 4,000 people came out to enjoy all the creativity. We had several 3D chalk artists from out of state who came in to put their unique 'artistic touch' on Clarksville.” The family-friendly event, which was free for everyone, featured a variety of chalk artists, live music, artisan vendors, food trucks, and a kid zone where everyone had a chance to try their hand at creating their own sidewalk works of art. Several artists were creating their artwork live throughout the day. The list includes Olasubomi Aka-Bashorun, Zach Herndon, Jessi Lindsey Queen, Cameron McKnight, the folks from Sacer & Savive, and many more.

Everyone was enjoying the buffet table and cocktail bar. Worry About Their Skin Story by Dr. Kimberly A. Lehman, DO
From fine lines and rosacea to double chin and hair loss, men care about their appearance, even if they won’t admit it. The medical providers and staff of Lehman Advanced Dermatology have seen an increase in male patients who want to keep looking their best. Many of the problems that men encounter can be taken care of at Lehman Advanced Dermatology. They include: Rosacea - Believe it or not, men suffer from rosacea with more severe cases than women. The chronic redness, flushing, and papules of rosacea can have a significant impact on a person’s confidence. Luckily there are both topical and oral medications, as well as laser therapy, such as the award-winning excel® V laser system, that can keep rosacea in check. Fine Lines and Wrinkles – More and more men are having Botox® and Dysport® injections performed to help soften fine lines and even prevent future wrinkles from forming. This is a quick treatment that can be done over lunch. A minimal to no downtime skin revitalization procedure – Laser Genesis – is perfect for busy, on-the-go individuals who are interested in combating the early signs of aging to reveal a new, radiant complexion. Men also lose skin volume over time, which can be easily restored with short term or longer lasting fillers such as Restylane®, Juvederm®, Sculptra® Aesthetic, or Bellafill®. Results are natural appearing, no one even has to know! Double Chin - Men work on their bodies at the gym to keep in shape, but there’s no exercise to firm up the genetically inherited or naturally occurring double chin. Two great options for treating a double chin include Kybella® and truSculpt® iD. Kybella® contains deoxycholic acid that is injected into the trouble areas under the chin, destroying
fat cells. The truSculpt® iD is a radiofrequency device that uses heat to permanently destroy fat cells. Both can bring about amazing and desired profile changes! Hair Loss - Hair loss is a significant problem worldwide and can be devastating–changing how we look and feel about ourselves. According to Dr. Lehman, “There are multiple ways to approach hair loss these days, and we are seeing great results with minimal to no downtime. Platelet Rich Fibrin Matrix injections are a mainstay in thinning hair treatment.” Even more enhanced results can be obtained when combining multiple treatments. Body Contouring – No matter how much you diet and exercise, trouble spots can remain. With truSculpt® iD, say goodbye to those unwanted areas! This is a radiofrequency body contouring device that is FDA-approved to cause permanent destruction of fat cells. It is a safe and comfortable treatment with no down-time. Achieve amazing results in as little as 1 to 2, 15-minute treatments. According to Dr. Lehman, “Two of the main complaints from men are wrinkles and hair thinning. We have procedures and products that can treat both”. As you can see, there are many solutions to men’s skin and hair problems. So, Men, do yourself a favor and check in with Lehman Advanced Dermatology to keep yourself looking as young as you feel. For more information, visit our website or consult with Lehman Advanced Dermatology. We’re located at 781 Weatherly Drive Suite C, Clarksville, TN 37043. Oak Grove's
SPRING INTO SUMMER festival
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze
Oak Grove's annual Spring into Summer Festival seems to get bigger each year, and with good reason, as tens of thousands enjoy everything from carnival rides and car shows, to fireworks, zip-lining and great live music. Word of mouth for this year's festival began immediately after the Oak Grove Tourism Commission announced that MCA Nashville recording artist, Josh Turner would headline Sean Thomas & Lexi Owens the annual event. “We are super excited to have Josh Turner for our 12th annual international and regional award-winning festival, Traci Cunningham, Executive Director of Oak Grove Tourism, said in a press release. “The relationship between Country Music artists, our troops, and their families has been a long-standing tradition, and we are delighted and thrilled Josh Turner will be bringing his talent and support to Oak Grove, KY.” The festival ran for two days, 12 p.m. - 9 p.m. on Saturday, and 12 p.m. - 6 p.m. on Sunday. Numerous vendor booths were set up outside the amphitheater. There was a car and motorcycle show, an extreme trampoline show, carnival rides and food. Thousands came early to find a spot for Saturday's concert. They enjoyed an afternoon performance from Renegade Rally, featuring Branscombe Richmond and his all-star band. All eyes then turned to the sky for an extended 10-man parachute team jump show. As the sun and the temperature went down, the overflowing crowd came to life, and seemed to enjoy every minute of Josh Turner's performance. A great evening of music was followed by a spectacular fireworks display. Miranda Wagoner & Lucy Diamond

Story + Photography by Tony Centonze The 2019 Janice Mason Art Museum Dinner on Main treated 100 lucky guests to great music from Cadiz's own Arielle Evens, and an eclectic menu created by the community itself, all in an elegant center-of-town setting. El Bracero and JMAM Board Members created the appetizers. Ribeye steaks were prepared by Mayor Todd King, Reva's Restaurant, and Lost River Creamery at the Cabin provided the beverages for the evening, as well as many more who contributed to the memorable dining experience. JMAM's Past President Paul Fourshee took a moment to talk about the fundraiser, and the museum. “This is our third year,” Fourshee said. “We only have food and space for 100 people so our ticket sales are limited. I'm proud to say, we have sold out once again, and this year, all the funds we raise tonight go to support the museum.” “Dr. Gutmann is our featured artist, and he has a wonderfully diverse show,” Foursehee said. “We also have some great artists coming up. People can look up information on our website or Facebook page. “There are lots of things going on that people may not be aware of, like our art classes, pottery, jewelry, fused glass, all kinds of fun things. And, in July, we have free art classes for children, which is sponsored by the Rotary Club.” To learn more about the Janice Mason Art Museum, visit www.jmam.org 38 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Summer 2019

Jubilee House
American Flag Raising
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze
Tenants, management and staff of Jubilee House Senior Living Facility were joined by guests from the community to watch the raising of the American Flag by the Northwest High School JROTC Color Guard. “We officially opened on April 15th,” Deborah Elms said. “The building project took a little under two years. We are managed by Frontier Management Company out of Oregon, and partnered locally with owner Dr. Anil Patel.” Jubilee House offers 84 assisted living apartments and 26 memory care apartments, providing different levels of care.
Shelly Hutchison & Billy Lange
“We have a very strong memory care program,” Elms said. “It's based on the Montessori program, which puts the patient first. We learn who that person is, and we give them valuable things to do.” The impressive facility has four living rooms, a bistro and a lounge area. There are pianos, a library and a movie theater. There will be two concierges on duty. In addition, there is a wellness center for occupational and physical therapy. Speech therapy is also available, as well as a clinical area so visiting physicians and residents will have a private place to go. “We encourage everyone to come and tour the community,” Elms said. “It's so beautiful. We think they will be as awestruck as we are. Jubilee House is the best of both worlds. I love that it doesn't look like assisted living. It doesn't feel like you're living in senior housing.” Dr. Anil Patel shared his thoughts. “This facility is for the people of Clarksville. It will be here long after we are all gone. Our commitment is as strong as our walls. Our mission is to focus on the overall well being of our residents. That includes things like nutrition and rest. We want to take a holistic approach in caring for our residents.”

The Life & Legacy OF A TRUE GENTLEMAN Story by Liesel Schmidt | Photography Courtesy of Briggs Clothiers
www.vipclarksville.com • 43
Family legacies are an amazing thing, connecting generations not only through blood but also through bonds created by something more tangible—something that has been built through the work of blood, sweat, tears, passion, and perseverance. In some cases, those legacies leave their mark on the community, as well; and as the family behind Briggs Clothiers can attest, their own family legacy has helped keep the Clarksville community both well-tailored and well-dressed for nearly fifty years, offering a type of service and care that sets them head and shoulders above the rest. Originally founded in 1972 by Ernest Lafayette and Barbara Briggs and George and Grace Stanfill and operating under under the name Suit City, the store was later officially changed to Briggs Clothiers when the Briggs family assumed full ownership in 1986. As a former traveling sales rep for men’s clothing, Lafayette had a particular passion and knowledge for the needs of his clients; and when the shop opened, that personal touch, expertise, and experience helped create something that would last for years to come. “He knew he could offer Clarksville a men’s clothing store built on quality, excellence, and—most of all—customer service,” says granddaughter Susan Briggs Hester. “He was all about spending time with people,” she recalls fondly. Clearly, that translated into success in business as well as into other areas of his life. He fed that back into the community both by creating jobs and working with charitable causes throughout the area, passing that legacy onto his family. And when Lafayette passed away in 1994, the Briggs family was faced with a decision about what would come next for the store. Naturally, the family wanted to continue on in the business that they had built, but it wasn’t a path without challenges. And as Lafayette’s son, Ernie, and his wife Rosamond worked tirelessly over the next years to keep the store not only afloat but also thriving, they proved that principal and heart are another legacy of the Briggs family name.
“My dad is well known throughout Clarksville as a man who will do everything he can to help in your time of need. He’s loyal, tenderhearted, and a friend to all." - Susan Briggs Hester “It’s often been said that he’ll give you the shirt off his back if he knows you need it. He’s been a loving husband for 45 years and a supportive father who never missed a baseball game or a dance recital, who took us to church every Sunday and taught us about the love of Jesus. And his favorite name is ‘Grandaddy,’” she goes on. Balancing so much is not an easy feat by any means, especially when, as Susan recalls, her father put in so much time at work, never missing a day in more than 25 years. And in an age when countless brickand-mortars are shutting their doors, staying true to a dream and continuing that legacy requires incredible dedication, determination, and faith. “His faith is evident by the way he treats others, and on any given day, you can find someone stopping by the store to share something difficult in their life and he’ll drop what he’s doing to pray for them. He’s walked with the families of our community through many proms, job interviews, weddings, and funerals. He treats everyone like family, and you won’t find anyone more reliable than Ernie Briggs in craft or character,” Susan contends. “In difficult seasons, Dad wondered if he should close the doors; but he kept them open and kept providing for his family, along with clothing his customers and meeting the needs of our community,” she goes on proudly. “He didn’t want to give up on that dream because he loves what he does and loves the ways it’s kept him connected to this 44 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Summer 2019
community. When we drive around town in his truck, he takes the back roads and tells boyhood stories like being born in the old hospital on North 2nd Street, playing ball at Mericourt Park, falling in love with a Kentucky girl at Austin Peay, getting to referee in the NFL at Titans stadium, and living the good life with his family and many friends around this town that he loves. There are so many memories here, and it’s amazing to know that he—and the store—are part of all that history.” Clearly, this is a woman inspired by her father, a woman who takes pride in what the Briggs name means. And so, too, does she take pride and inspiration in her father as an example as she and her husband, Brandon, take the reins of Briggs Clothiers, now that Ernie is moving into the next season of life. “When Brandon started working closely under my dad’s mentorship at the store in 2015, his creativity made him a natural fit. He quickly took to the skills of styling, fitting, and customizing wardrobes for our clients; and Dad has shared all of his knowledge with Brandon while Brandon has also greatly familiarized himself with the clothing industry and men’s fashion in today’s market.” An important facet of staying relevant, Brandon’s new vision, combined with Ernie’s “old fashioned” touch, is sure to carry the business to continued success; and this new generation is looking forward to the future. “We’ve modernized our merchandise so that men of all ages have the experience of shopping with a true clothier and investing in a quality wardrobe, and I’ve updated our technology to improve the systems that create an exceptional Briggs experience,” Susan explains, clearly taking to her role in the business. “The change in ownership will naturally result in a shift in the culture of the store, but we never want to lose sight of the hard work my dad put in over the years and the gift of legacy we’ve received.” “Above all, we want the store to carry its heritage, to dress the men of Clarksville in quality clothing while giving them an excellent experience and unparalleled customer service,” she continues. “This will always be a family business. I’m so proud of my husband and how he has transformed the store into a place that people love to shop while receiving the same care and attention that my dad always offers in abundance, and I’m proud of my dad for opening himself up to changing some things for the sake of the business and our community as well as his own family and future.” With a legacy like theirs, that future is looking sharp. Briggs Clothiers is located at 1990 Madison Street, Clarksville, Tennessee 37043. For more information, call (931) 647-6444 or visit www.briggsclothiers.com.

THE 26 TH ANNUAL
GODFATHER INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
Melinda Shepard, Phil Harpel & Phil Collins
Story + Photography by Tony Centonze The 26th Annual Godfather Invitational Golf Tournament was recently held at Clarksville Country Club as part of the Tim Wheeler & Steve Von Mann 2019 Clarksville-Montgomery County Warrior Week.
Nelson Boehms & Matt Upshaw
Phil Harpel is in charge of Military and Government Relations for the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce, organizer of the event. He spoke of its origins and purpose. “We've held this event for 26 years now,” Harpel said. “It's named for Colonel Art Lombardi, a highly decorated veteran of three wars, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He was known as 'The Godfather'. We don't do this to raise money. This tournament is an opportunity for us to get some Fort Campbell soldiers to come out and play a course they might not have had a chance to play before.” This year's roster boasted 19 teams, playing in a 4-man scramble format. And, the golfers enjoyed an absolutely perfect spring day on the course. The Chamber's annual Warrior Week is a celebration of service members and their families. Events can include a movie night for soldiers and their families, the golf tournament, and a highly competitive Tobacco Stick softball game, a showdown between a Clarksville-Montgomery County Community team and the always-talented Fort Regina Mick & Jeff Truitt Campbell Soldiers team. 46 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Summer 2019

Story by Liesel Schmidt Photography by Landon Streit + Gary Giaffoglione
Chances are, if you round up a handful of people in a room and ask them all what they do for a living, you’ll hear the answers you’d expect: doctor, lawyer, teacher, banker, retail employee, waitstaff…Ask 33 yearold Landon Streit what he does everyday, however, and he’ll tell you he builds bridges. And he’s not talking about the kind you build with Legos. He’s talking real-deal bridges that stretch from one expanse of land to another, impossibly uniting the two with structures that seem to defy all logic in their precise engineering and complex construction. A project manager for Jensen Construction Company for the past ten years, Streit graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Construction Engineering before taking his position with the company, which specializes in building bridges over major waterways, focusing largely on areas from Texas to the Dakaotas. In his work, Streit has traveled all across the Midwest and has been living in Clarksville since the beginning of 2018. “I really enjoy the variety of people I get to work with in my job,” he says. “Regardless of whether they’re extremely educated people with advanced degrees or never finished high school, I’ve had the opportunity to work with extremely talented individuals that are highly skilled in what they do.”
Since making Clarksville his new community, he’s been immersing himself in the local culture, hiking and exploring the outdoors, and— having quite the hobby for making his own beer and wine—testing out some of the local breweries and wineries. Clearly, he knows how to balance work and play; and as he becomes more a part of the framework of the local business community, he’s learned the importance of building relationships with his fellow community members and how those relationships can bridge so many divides. “Being new to town, I felt that getting involved with Clarksville Young Professionals would be especially beneficial in helping me expand my social circle as well as in making some business contacts,” he says. “I also feel that my involvement could help others in CYP, because transportation is such an important component of economic development, no matter where you live. Being able to bring news and updates about the ways transportation is evolving to the group is something that I feel can add value to my fellow members in the work that they do, how they live their lives, and how they see the future of the community.” “I think involvement with CYP is important because business is so relationship-oriented,” Streit goes on. “If you can make new contacts, or improve existing ones, it will only serve to help you and community in some way.” www.vipclarksville.com • 53

DIVING IN WITH
Rich Holladay of Waterdogs SCUBA & Safety
Story by Liesel Schdmit Photography Courtesy of Rich Holladay + Waterdogs Scuba
There’s something captivating about the world that exists below the surface of the water, that thrives in the quiet and darkness where the sun doesn’t reach and civilization has no foothold. In that vast expanse of nature ruled by so many creatures that are still a mystery, it is the humans who venture there that are the strange ones; and it is that very sense of strangeness that seems to draw us in to explore the wonders of the deep and all that call it home. For SCUBA enthusiasts, the exploration of that world is what gets their blood pumping, what excites them and inspires them to venture deeper and deeper. But while some just do it as a hobby, for others, it becomes a true passion.
in many different places all over the world. During that time, he also worked with various dive centers both as a client and as staff, furthering his knowledge of the activity and ultimately providing a means for getting a new career off the ground after he separated from active duty. Not that it’s all work for Holladay, now that he’s running a business. Quite the contrary, as he still finds that sense of wonder, that sense of tranquility and endless possibility in every trip he takes into the deep. Most importantly, he sees the value—socially, physically, and emotionally—of those diving excursions.
"While SCUBA diving can be very exciting, what attracts me is the calm quiet of being underwater. There's nothing quite like it..."
“There are so many wonders under the surface of the water, and the sensations you feel are so different than being tied down by gravity that it’s hard not to love it once you’ve tried it,” says Rich Holladay, who co-owns Waterdogs SCUBA & Safety LLC, where he and his business partner, Cecil Stout, offer SCUBA training and certification as well as safety courses in CPR. In addition to his work at Waterdogs, Holladay also teaches Underwater SCUBA Diving and Introduction to Rock Climbing classes as an adjunct professor at APSU. A disabled retired Army veteran, Holladay got his first taste of SCUBA diving in 1997 while he was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia, and his military career gave him the opportunity to dive 54 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Summer 2019
“While SCUBA diving can be very exciting, what attracts me is the calm quiet of being underwater. There’s nothing quite like it for promoting wellness, in my opinion; and it’s been incredibly helpful to me mentally, because like so many other veterans, sometimes my mind races,” admits 50 year-old Holladay, who joined the military just before Operation Desert Storm and retired in 2012 as the Command Sergeant Major of 1-187 Infantry, 3rd Brigade of the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell. A career Infantryman, he also had combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, so leaving the stresses that came with active duty and the psychological struggles so often suffered from combat to float above the surface of the water was a sense of solace then—just as it is now. “When you’re underwater, there’s a singleness of effort and a focus that’s hard to find anywhere else.” And Holladay is not
"... It's (SCUBA diving) been incredibly helpful to me mentally, because like so many other veterans, sometimes my mind races." alone in the restoration he finds through SCUBA, as is evidenced by the way that the activity seems to draw a community of people that all find commonality in the water, regardless of their age, profession, social background, or level of physical fitness. All that’s needed is the desire to dive. “I see many folks find a comfortable and familiar place to enjoy this incredible activity with friends of similar experiences and background, but there’s also a unique opportunity that comes with the activity that brings together divers whose backgrounds and lives are extremely diverse, creating new friendships and relationships that last a long time.”
With each dive he takes, Holladay is learning more—about himself, about his planet, about the ways that life is a mysterious thing that is never-ending in its possibilities to bring amazement. And as he works with those who want to enter into the world that he so loves, he is giving them a gift of wonder that inspires them to go deep.
Clearly, the social payoff of zipping up a wetsuit and strapping on a tank is high, but so is the physical payoff. “Physically, it’s a great calorie burner, and the activity helps everyone get stronger,” Holladay says. As someone deeply immersed in military culture, SCUBA isn’t Holladay’s only passion; and in opening Waterdogs, he and Cecil—also a disabled retired veteran—combined their love of the aquatic world with their desire to create a welcoming place for both active duty and retired military personnel. In addition to having a largely military-based staff, Waterdogs has been a means of satisfying their desire to “start a dive family that has grown into a tribe;” and they’ve gone deep into their mission of giving back through the work that they do with various veterans’ organizations and Wounded Warrior populations both locally and all across the world. www.vipclarksville.com • 55

Relay for Life of Montgomery County hosted its annual American Cancer Society fundraiser, this year's event took place at Governor's Square Mall. Melissa Hogan is Co-Chair of Montgomery County Relay For Life 2019. “This year, we are closing the book on cancer,” Hogan said. “We have several teams registered to walk, and about 40 vendors set up on site. This is going to be a great day.” Hogan took a moment to thank Gateway Vanderbilt, as well as Governor's Square Mall, and all the sponsors and volunteers who contributed to the success of this campaign. Ali Smith & Steve Murphy
“Clarksville Fire and Rescue has been a huge help to us this year,” Marie-Laur Killebrew Hogan said. “LG has donated products. We are playing a game & Angie Grandin of Penny Wars, where the losers will get dunked in a dunking booth. We are hoping to raise $120,000 throughout the campaign. People will still be able to contribute for another month or two, so hopefully we will get there.” At 5 p.m. the Survivor/Caregiver Walk began. Anyone who has dealt with cancer was invited to participate. They were cheered on by supporters and loved-ones as they walked. At 8 p.m. the Luminaria Ceremony began. Each light represented a life taken by cancer, a survivor, or support for a person still fighting the disease. The closing ceremony took place at 9 p.m.

TENNESSEE TITANS MEET AND GREET

Just days after the NFL Draft made history in the streets of Nashville, the Titans Caravan was on the move, making a visit to Miguel, Gabriel & Isabela Montes Fort Campbell, Kentucky for a meet and greet with fans. Titans linebacker Rashaan Evans and wide receiver Adam Humphries were joined by cheerleaders Travona and Kelsey, and Titans mascot T-Rac, for an autograph session at the Post Exchange. Hundreds were in line to meet the players, many carrying jerseys or footballs which they hoped to have autographed. Free posters were provided to Caravan attendees as well, and photos were encouraged. Two lucky Fort Campbell High School students, Ethan Tomerlin and Jahlyn Mincey were selected by FCHS faculty to be special guests at the Tennessee Titans Meet & Greet. They got to sit in on a short press conference and then spend several minutes with Humphries and Evans, talking about football, high school, and life in general, prior to the pair going out to meet the fans. The 2019 Titans Caravan is sponsored by Academy Sports & Outdoors. A total of 18 stops will be made in Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky over the course of three weeks.

Story + Photography by Tony Centonze The Montgomery County Veterans Coalition recently hosted a casual event for its members, a sort of meet and greet at Tennessee Valley Brewing Co. Sherry Pickering is MCVC's Executive Director. “We would call this a networking event for the coalition,” Pickering said. “In the future, we will advertise in advance, so those who want to be a part of the veterans group can attend and get to know others who are working with veterans in the community.”
Holi Havi, Giovanni Hernandez & Jon Babauta
Pickering says, this type of event gives MCVC members an opportunity to network, that they don't normally get at regular meetings. “At our meetings, we are so focused on the business at hand, we don't really get the chance to network with each other, there is just never enough time,” Pickering said. “We want to have quarterly events, and each one will have a theme. This time, we gave out a list of retreats that veterans and their families can go on together. “I think we had 25 people this time, a good crowd, but we were competing with graduations and Memorial Day weekend. As we go forward we will use these events to spotlight veteran-owned businesses, by allowing those business owners to be our hosts.” More information can be found on Facebook at Montgomery County Veterans Coalition.

Testimonials My husband and I were referred to Felicia by friends of ours, and I can't say enough good things about her and her team. If you are new to the area, or in the military, talk to Felicia! She will take the time to get to know you, and get you the house that you want. She is a true professional, and her energy is contagious! Our first time home buying process was so easy with Felicia. I recommend her to anyone I meet who is thinking of buying a house. Thank you so much Felicia!! -- Laura Brower Muhlbeier
My husband and I met Felicia about 5 years ago when she was recommended to us by a friend. He assured us she was the best. We were expecting our first child and needed a new home fast! She helped us to find that home quickly and made the process so easy for us. As our family started to quickly grow, we knew we needed a bigger house. After calling Felicia, she came right over and helped us out. Before we knew it our house was on the market and sold! Felicia is the best in town. She helped us find our new home and made sure we were in it fast and easy. She has gone above and beyond for us and we have never had anything to worry about with her on our side! We have recommended her to friends who have been equally as satisfied, and we would recommend her to anyone! AND we absolutely LOVE our new home. Thank you so much Felicia! -- Kristen & Jason Payne

LEGAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Kevin Kennedy and his team recently hosted the annual Kennedy Law Firm legal internship program, a week of mentoring for local students that gives them an inside look at our legal system. “We've been doing this over 20 years,” Kennedy said. “Students from all the area high schools and colleges are interviewed, and some are selected for the program.” During the week-long program, participants are exposed to local judges, district attorneys and lawyers, a real behind-the-scenes look.

“It's been fun and fascinating,” Kennedy said. “This is really the cream of the crop from our local school system. We get to see into their world, a glimpse of what's going on with this generation. It's a wonderful bridge, and it brings a message of hope to the entire community.” Kennedy says, it's mentoring. Most of the time young people only get to see the legal profession on television, they never get to see or hear from the real people. “There are 39 in this year's group, and it has been a pleasure working with them,” Kennedy said. “It also makes you realize how fast life goes by. We are really marking history. Every year, so many of the interns from this program go on to great things. We get news that they have graduated law school or medical school, or have become CEO's. This program is not just about lawyers, it's about success, and becoming business owners and community leaders.”

Manna Cafe recently held its 2nd Annual Grits & Gravy at The Belle Hollow, a relaxed fundraiser that features breakfast food for Angela & Matt Edwards dinner. “Tonight is our annual Grits & Gravy,” Manna Cafe Director Kenny York said. “It's also the 9-year anniversary of us serving our first meal in Clarksville. That happened on May 6, 2010. So, this is a two-fold celebration. We celebrate our birthday, and we try to raise a little money at the same time.” Last year's event was a big success, and this year was no different. “We're very happy with how this has developed,” York said. “It's a fun event. For a couple of years we held this in the morning, then it occurred to us that everybody likes breakfast for supper, so we thought we would make it an evening event. Everybody really seems to enjoy it.” York says, it's taking some time to get the new location ready, and the need to raise money is ongoing.
Sterling & Dee Hilmo
“We have to keep striving to raise the money for this project,” York said. “But, God is providing. And, we hope to open the first building sometime this summer. Last year, we distributed 2,000,000 pounds of food and served 20,000 people. With the new facility, we can do even more. Bernard & Jody Townsend “We can bring in other agencies, and not only give them a food box, but help them with case work. We can offer church services, and a celebrate recovery program, those types of things. The kind of help they need, so they may not need to come to us for a food box in the future.”

GENTLEMEN'S PROFILE
Ryan Bowie Story by Liesel Schmidt | Photography courtesy of Ryan Bowie
A lover of the arts from his earliest memories, Ryan Bowie isn’t just a theatre buff—he’s someone who’s following his bliss and proving that life is the greatest stage of all…We just have to find the roles we’re meant to play.
without a plan. Instead, he received a BS in Music: Vocal Performance; a BS in Theatre: Acting; and minors in both Business and French, putting in the work that would lay the foundation for a fully realized career.
Encouraged by his parents to be creative and hone the natural talents that they saw in him, Bowie began enrolling in acting and dance classes as well as taking voice lessons while he was in kindergarten. “My parents have always been incredibly supportive in helping me reach my goals and explore my dreams to the fullest,” he says.
Over the course of the next few years, Bowie was living the dream as a stage actor based in New York, traveling the country as part of theatre productions that proved with each dimming of the houselights that he was exactly where he was supposed to be. And when one of his performances brought him to the stage at Clarksville’s iconic Roxy Regional Theatre in 2010, he found that that sense of belonging meant he’d found his home stage—one that he never wanted to leave. “I was bitten by the Clarksville bug; and the Roxy was definitely part of that,” Bowie recalls.
As he got older, Bowie’s path in life became more and more clear; and so he pursued a career in the only thing that would make him feel fulfilled: theatre. Knowing that education was key, however, he didn’t just pack up and head for the bright lights of Broadway 70 • VIP Clarksville Magazine | Summer 2019
So impressed by him was the board at the Roxy that they offered him the position of Director of Fundraising and Development in November 2010, a title he carried for six seasons. From there, he went on to be named Executive Director and is looking forward to his fourth season in the role. “When I accepted the position, I knew I wanted to make some simple yet effective changes to make the Roxy a destination not only for theatre-goers, but for all of Clarksville-Montgomery County. We opened the Roxy up to outside users—comedians, magicians, outside theatre and music groups, among many types of productions—as well as bringing film back to the theater.”
His work has certainly been noticed, and Bowie was recently awarded The George Mabry Award through the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts, which is presented individuals who have made a significant impact on arts and culture in Montgomery County through philanthropy, leadership, or direct involvement or have advanced arts and culture through innovative work beneficial to the arts in Montgomery County. “I’m sincerely humbled to receive this award; but I feel the award really goes to my incredible staff, the talented professional actors we bring in each season, and the Roxy’s patrons. Without them, my position would not exist; and I’m grateful to be able to do what I love every day,” says Bowie. For this theater buff, this is a role he loves to play, and it’s earning him a standing ovation. www.vipclarksville.com • 71
BBQ, BREWS & Beethoven Story + Photography by Shona Leah Clarksville’s Grammy award-winning Gateway Chamber Orchestra performed at the first annual BBQ, Brews & Beethoven. Now that’s an alliteration we can all say five times with a smile on our faces! Presented by F&M Bank and hosted at the Clarksville Regional Airport, attendees socialized to sophisticated sounds while sipping local craft beers from Blackhorse Brewery. Mission BBQ was also there with southern pulled pork and all the fixins’. Music Director, Gregory Wolynec welcomed and invited everyone to enjoy a sampling of music that included short works from Bach to Beethoven. The feature presentation, George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris”, evoked the spiritedness of la Ville Lumière against a backdrop of homespun company.

GCO board member, Roberta Richardson, said, “We wanted to include a broader audience with a relaxed, casual setting” and that they were “thrilled with the lovely mix of GCO supporters alongside new faces joining us for the first time”.

Story by Liesel Schmidt | Photography by JGL Photography
They say that the strongest love starts in friendship, and that couldn’t be more true for Robbie Wilson and Paulina Masser, who met in high school but stayed in the “friend zone” for ten years before taking their relationship to the next level. And, having realized that theirs was a forever-kind-of-love, they’d already formed an unbreakable bond and created a family of their own when they took a walk that changed their lives forever. “We’d had a little argument that morning, and, being 16 weeks pregnant at the time, I was a little on the overly emotional side,” recalls Paulina, a Century 21 Platinum Properties real estate agent. “We went to church for Easter Sunday service, then to lunch before going home; and because I was not only running on pregnancy hormones but am also stubborn by nature, neither of us spoke very much during that whole period of time. Once we got home, though, we talked and smoothed things over. Some crying may have been involved…” she admits with a laugh. “Afterwards, I convinced Robbie to go on a walk with me and our dog, Annie, to the park in our neighborhood. It’s a special spot for the two of us; and while we were walking hand-in-hand, I joked, ‘My pregnancy app sent me an article about dealing with stress during pregnancy, and the first thing it said was to dump your annoying boyfriend.’ We both laughed, and then he said, ‘Well, maybe you should dump your boyfriend and get a husband!’ Before I could respond, I realized he’d stopped walking and was down on one knee with a beautiful ring!” A lover of simple things, the ring Robbie gave Paulina was a round-cut diamond set in white gold, with smaller diamonds running down each side of the band. “The ring is just perfect—it’s simple, with a twist of dazzle to it that looks amazing when the light hits it.” For Robbie, the owner of Alpha Moving & Storage, the selection at McKenzie & Smiley Jewelers was ideal, and he knew that he’d find the perfect ring for his perfect match. “They have wonderful pieces, and they’re the best place in town for high quality jewelry and fantastic service,” he says.

GENTLEMEN'S PROFILE
“I’ve torn the ACL and meniscus in my right knee, suffered a few concussions, tore the pectoris major right off of the front of my shoulder, and have a bulged L5 and S1.” Knowing that Anthony Mayweather spent five years in the Army and served in Iraq, you might assume that he’d suffered those injuries in a war zone. But that laundry list of battle wounds isn’t from actual battle in the field; it’s from the kind of battle waged in the ring, one-on-one, hand-to hand. Mano a mano. For Anthony “Crimson” Mayweather, these are reminders that he’s pursuing the dreams he first had as a child, when Hulk Holgan ruled the ring and wrestled his way into the hearts of so many boys all across the country. “I’ve always loved professional wrestling. Some of my earliest memories are of being in front of the TV as a young child, watching larger-than-life superheroes like Hulk Hogan jumping out of the TV at me, telling me to ‘say my prayers, eat my vitamins, and train hard;’ and that if I did that, I could accomplish anything,” he says. And now, as a pro wrestler, event promoter, and owner of a wrestling school, 34 year-old Mayweather is proving his idol right. The story of how he got to this place, impressively muscled and boasting championship titles as well as running his own wrestling mini-empire, is an interesting one, to be sure. It’s also incredibly inspiring, even if you’re not a fan of wrestling, because it proves that sometimes daring to dream pays off—and that you’re never too old to make your childhood wishes come true. “During my second deployment to Iraq, some of my friends and I would order wrestling DVDs and watch them on our down time,” he recalls. “It was during the end of that deployment that they convinced me that I should try it out when we got back from Iraq. They knew my time in the Army was coming to an end after that deployment, and I knew that I wanted to pursue that dream, and that there was no better time to make it happen.” And make it happen, he did, establishing the Tried-N-True brand and running his first live professional wrestling event in 2015. Three years later in 2018, he opened the TriedN-True Academy, where students could learn pro wrestling tactics and maneuvers to perfect their skills.

Wrestling has always been a constant in my life, and now in my young son’s life, as well. I love creating memories for the kids who come to the matches, and I love giving families the chance to be together and escape the everyday grind of real life for a few hours of entertainment that’s family-friendly.
Naturally, to make it in that world, you have to have some professional experience in the back pocket of your spandex shorts. You have to have the muscle to back it up, and Mayweather certainly has that, having competed in over a 1,000 wrestling matches over the past ten years he’s been in the ring. He’s won more than he’s lost; and as the holder of titles including TNA World Tag Team Champion, OVW Heavyweight Champion, OVW Southern Tag Team Champion, and NWA Mid American Television Champion, he has reason to be proud. When he’s not in the ring himself, he heads up Tried-N-True, a promotions company that organizes, promotes, and runs live professional wrestling events in addition to maintaining a digital content library of their events and a website featuring merchandise. “The live professional wrestling events we host in Clarksville and the surrounding areas are similar to what you would see on TV when you watch WWE,” he explains. “I bring in top pro wrestling stars and legends from around the world, and I’m proud to say that our events have had such stars as Jeff Hardy, Road Warrior Animal, and Jeff Jarrett as well as attendance by celebrities including actor David Arquette and the Smashing Pumpkins’ lead singer, Billy Corgan.” As everyone knows, filling the ring is only part of the equation. It’s also critical to bring in the crowds, and Mayweather clearly has skills in doing so. For him, it’s a way to continue the craft, to present it to audiences and create memories that will last a lifetime as well as inspiring a whole new generation of wrestlers to pursue new dreams of their own.
"Wrestling has always been a constant in my life, and now in my young son’s life, as well. I love creating memories for the kids who come to the matches, and I love giving families the chance to be together and escape the everyday grind of real life for a few hours of entertainment that’s family-friendly.” Naysayers might say that it’s all a show; and while there’s some element of truth in that, Mayweather would offer this: “Professional wrestling in 2019 is a lot different than many remember it being in the past. It features a high level of athleticism and storytelling within the matches; and in my opinion, it's the greatest form of entertainment.” At Tried-N-True, it’s not all about entertainment, however, as Mayweather uses it as a platform for community outreach, as well, dedicating a portion of his profits from each event to local charities. In addition, Mayweather also makes regular appearances at various community events and stays highly involved in as many ways as he can. Clearly, “Crimson” Mayweather knows how to win—and he’s committed to making his community win, as well. ROTARY CLUB OF HOPKINSVILLE
Kentucky Derby Benefit Story + Photography by Tony Centzone
Rotary Club of Hopkinsville held its annual Kentucky Derby Benefit at Casey Jones Distillery, with great food and music, and fashion choices that would rival Churchill Downs itself. Trent Haddock took a moment to talk about the Derby Benefit as well as this year's Rotary Auction. “I was the auction chair this year, and I'm the incoming president, I will take over in July,” Haddock said. “Our auction is something we look forward to every year, and I believe the people of Christian County do as well. We usually hold the auction the third or fourth week of April. Our goal this year was $300,000, we actually brought in $330,000.”
Billy & Melodie Bingham
Haddock says the Rotary club gives back to the youth of Christian County. “We have a Rotary Scholars Program that allows any qualifying senior who graduates from any Christian County school to attend Hopkinsville Community College for free for two years. We also give to other local youth organizations.
Rachel Smith & Kiley Killebrew
“Today is about having some fun, kicking back, and celebrating a great auction. This is the second year for the Derby Benefit party, and we are hoping to make this an annual event. I also want to say, Casey Jones Distillery is a great venue. We really enjoy it here.”

Hog Roast Hootenanny Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Sango's Food Initiative Farm was recently filled with the sights and sounds of spring, as well as some great food and music, as Michael and Regina Hampton hosted their annual Hog Roast Hootenanny. "This is our 3rd Hog Roast,” Michael Hampton said. “This is something we do so that people from the community can come out, tour the farm, and see what we have going on out here.” Hampton, with the help of some friends and volunteer staff, roasted a whole hog that was raised on the farm, then served it up with some great side items. A tent was set up with tables and chairs to accommodate most guests. There was additional seating in an area where a variety of games were set up for the kids. There was also a stage, where Jacob Johnson performed, thanks to a sponsorship from Journey's Eye. Everything was just a short walk from fenced areas where chickens, pigs and goats could be visited. “It's a time to hang out, build community, and enjoy some good food,” Hampton said. “I would estimate 150 - 175 are here with us today. All of today's proceeds go back into our operating fund, which helps us carry on the programs that we offer for local high school students."

More than 100 players enjoyed lunch and fellowship on the clubhouse patio before heading on to the course for an afternoon of golf and fundraising. “Today, we have our annual FCA Golf Challenge,” David Bearden Said. “This is one of two major fundraising events we hold each year. We usually host anywhere between 24 and 28 teams, and this event can raise as much as $100,000 for FCA, which helps support the ministry throughout the entire year.” “This is a four man scramble format but unlike most, it's not a pay-to-play event,” Bearden continued. “This is a sponsorship tournament, which means, everyone out here today received a sponsorship from someone, whether it be a business or an individual.”

Bearded Villians Beard Competition Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Bearded Villains recently hosted a family-friendly beard competition at Appleton's Harley-Davidson, featuring competitors in five categories, including Kids Creative Beard. About 15 brave bearded souls signed up for a chance to win plaques and prizes, most grew their own beards, the kid contestants had to be a bit more creative.
Jason Altenburg
John Pennington, aka 'Johnny P.', is a local barber, and member of the Tennessee Chapter of Bearded Villains, BVTN. He acted as host for the event, and presented awards to the top three competitors in each category. The overall winner was Jason McKinney. This year's youngest winner was MaKenna Moore, whose beard was made of artificial flowers and butterflies.
Kenny York & Jester Chris
“We have chapters all over the world, including Asia, the Middle East, Russia etc.,” Pennington said. “I have Steel Horse Traditional Barber Shop which is located right behind Appleton's. We opened our business in January, and celebrated today with a grand opening event.” Pennington says it takes time, commitment and a little money to maintain a beard properly. He sees the current resurgence in beard popularity is much more than a trend.
Michael 'Breezy' Clark
“We had about 15 competing today,” Pennington said. “As far as I know, this is Clarksville's first beard competition. I've been trying to get one started for years, and I'm very happy with today's turnout. I would like to mention that Bearded Villains is very supportive of the Adult Congenital Heart Association (ACHA), and we urge everyone to join us in September at Centennial Park for the 'Walk John & Evan Carlock for 1 in 100'.” More information on Bearded Villains can be found on Facebook at Bearded Villains Tennessee. PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW
Tony Centonze WWW.FB.COM/ TONY.CENTONZE.77 WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSION? I’m a freelance photographer and writer. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK? I think the most interesting parts of this business are the freedom that it offers and the daily opportunities for creativity that it provides. Every day is different for me. I'm traveling all over middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky, covering a variety of events, and meeting new people every week. Every situation is unique. But the cool part is that I get to tell people's stories with pictures and words. When people thank me for what I do, that's a good feeling. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES, PROFESSIONALLY? The weather. And the deadlines! Another challenge is scheduling. There are days when I don't have a single assignment, and then times when I have eight events in one day. But I love the challenge. I tell people that I've mastered the art of being in two places at once.
TONY CENTONZE
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN CLARKSVILLE? Since I was about three years old. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS? Personally, my parents and my step-dad are my biggest inspirations. They were all hard-working people of strong character who didn't let me get away with much. DO YOU HAVE ANY HIDDEN TALENTS? I studied music when I was young, all through middle and high school and into college. I play the drums—not as well as I used to—and I've been teaching myself how to play guitar for about 40 years now. I'm starting to doubt my teacher's abilities. WHAT'S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? Chocolate! I have at least one bite of something chocolate every day. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST HOBBY? I have a few. Being a (wannabe) musician, I love anything to do with music. I collect vinyl records, I have more instruments than I need, and I attend way too many concerts. I'm also a car guy, and I especially love German cars. And, even on my days off, I still love photography. WHAT'S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? My goal is to visit 100 countries, and I'm just about halfway there. I would love to visit every continent, and I have a list of countries that I really want to see. www.vipclarksville.com • 93
PEOPLE YOU SHOULD KNOW
Josh Vaughn
FB: @JOSHVAUGHNPHOTO | IG: @JOSH_VAUGHN_PHOTOGRAPHY | WWW.JOSHVAUGHNPHOTOGRAPHY.COM WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSION? I’m a professional photographer as well as the Business Development Manager for the Clarksville Montgomery County Regional Airport. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK? The variety. 90% of what I shoot involves cars or aircraft and I’m lucky enough to get to drive and shoot a huge variety of incredible cars and planes. On the airport side, I’m a lifelong aviation fanatic so I love all of it. I get to be involved in the community and talk about the airport, what's not to like?
JOSH VAUGHN
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES, PROFESSIONALLY? Balancing a professional photography business and promoting the Clarksville airport. Both are huge undertakings and require a lot of time; luckily the skillsets for both intertwine in a lot of ways. Setting aside time for family is a huge challenge when you keep as busy as I do. HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN CLARKSVILLE? I moved here from Germany in 2010. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS? My wife Aimee. She’s brilliant, beautiful, driven and the most capable person I’ve ever met and on top of all that she’s a wonderful Mom. I married up y’all. Other than Aimee I find inspiration everywhere. I'm constantly amazed by the people in this community-their talent, charity, and ability to make change is a constant inspiration. DO YOU HAVE ANY HIDDEN TALENTS? I’ve always been artistic, I can draw, paint, sculpt and I’m still taking a crack at photography but I suppose the “hidden” aspect would be my desire to constantly learn and improve. Every single day I learn something new about photography-technique, composition, lighting, editing- it never ends and that’s what I love about it. WHAT'S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? I wouldn’t exactly call is a “guilty” pleasure, but my greatest pleasure is waking up early on Sunday mornings to watch Formula 1 races, edit car photos and drink coffee while my 10-month-old daughter Sabina takes a nap on my chest-just the best thing in the whole world. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST HOBBY? Photography (if that isn't obvious yet)-specifically car photography. The list of cars I haven’t shot is getting small so if you’ve got a Ferrari F40, Porsche 959 or a Lamborghini Miura give me a call. WHAT'S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? I really want to photograph in Africa, Japan, Iceland and Tierra del Fuego. The other big box to check is to order a Porsche 911, go to Stuttgart and watch it being built at the factory. I've got a bottle of "Porsche" wine I bought at the Porsche Museum in 2008 and I'm not opening it until the day my 911 arrives.

Happenin' at the Hollemans' Story + Photography by Tony Centonze Happenin' at the Hollemans' had to be relocated this year, as weather threatened a rain-soaked event, but hosts and attendees alike were undeterred, and able to enjoy the festivities in the comfort of the Belle Hollow. “This is our 5th or 6th year hosting,” Mark Holleman said. “We enjoy doing this. We are happy to support the Roxy, it's such an asset to this community, and a keystone of downtown. It really is an icon that we are lucky to have. Ryan Bowie and his team do an awesome job, and we're just proud to be a part of it. I often tell people, the performances here are as good as what you would see at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville.” Chris Crow provided the live music for the evening, and several local restaurants donated food for the event. Items ranged from meatloaf sliders to seared Ahi tuna appetizers. Tables were decorated with set decorations and costume pieces from the different plays being announced.

“Tonight, we are announcing Season 37,” Ryan Bowie said. “All Mark & Ricki Holleman the upcoming productions that will run between September 2019 to August 2020. We are staging 20 different musicals and plays this season. Tonight is the official announcement, and kickoff for sponsorship levels, and opportunities for giving. There are many ways the community can help us bring these shows to life over this coming year. “We have an excellent line-up, and we're really excited. This year, we have lots of good things for children and for families. We also have some cutting-edge stuff, and some classics. It's a great mix.”
