Story & Photography by Tony Centonze A large crowd of supporters and media turned out recently for the official ground breaking of Clarksville’s new Multi-Purpose Event Center, a $100 million project that has been talked about in Montgomery County for years. “This is an exciting day,” Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett said. “MPEC is a Montgomery County project, but Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts has been so supportive, and very involved in it. It’s right here in his front yard.” The building itself will cost just under $100 million. The land purchase and associated design fees, etc, came in at a total of about $7 million. Durrett says the final budget will be approximately $120 million. “We have some great funding streams from a debt service standpoint,” Durrett said. “I see a lot of good things happening here. And, of course, we could not do this without the partnerships we have established with Austin Peay State University and the Nashville Predators. They are integral to this project’s long-term success.”

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS
Annual Big Birdie Ball Tournament Story & Photography by Tony Centonze Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarksville recently hosted its annual Big Birdie Ball Tournament at Downtown Commons. “Today, we have our Big Birdie Ball Tournament, this is our third year for it, and we’re excited to still be doing it,” BBBS’s Chris Buerck said. “It’s a goofy golf tournament, but in a weird, goofy year like this, what else are you going to do except get out to the fresh outdoors and play some golf on the streets of Clarksville.” Steve Kemmer & Doyle Robertson
BBBS, like most other charities, has been affected by COVID-19. “It has had an effect on us this year,” Buerck said. “We have doubled the number of kids on our waiting list this year. The pandemic stopped a lot of things, it did not stop kids needing someone outside their family to come and help them set goals and learn their potential.
Jule Pace & Nathile LaRose
“We’re struggling for mentors, more than we ever have. People are thinking we might not be operational because of COVID-19. But what we do is one-to-one mentoring. You’re in a small group by design. If you’re wearing a mask, and doing something outdoors, you’re still able to help a child succeed in life. You can still become a mentor.”
Shawn Howard & Lee Pedigo
BBBS has also incorporated virtual mentoring into a lot of its operations. “There is a possibility that you can be matched with a child, and meet virtually,” Buerck said. “We’re rolling out a program in the next few weeks that really helps with the virtual mentoring. We’re up and running, and the need is greater than ever, unfortunately.”

YPN Fundraiser: Who’s Got Game? Story & Photography by Tony Centonze Clarksville Association of Realtors was unable to hold its popular Handbags for Hope fundraiser, but CAR’s Jamie Wilbanks and her team created a fun, safe alternative. “I’m CAR’s Member Relationships Manager, and Staff Liaison for the YPN committee,” Wilbanks said. “This event is to raise money for the Mike Groves Memorial Scholarship. We do this each year, typically with our event Handbags for Hope. But we can’t do that during COVID-19, so we created this outdoor, socially distanced fundraising event.” Stella Ann & Dee Miller
Phil & Ana Maria Chiafalo
Vendors set up outside. There was a food truck on site. A large tent was set up with properly distanced tables to minimize risk, and DJ Joe Padula played music, then conducted a trivia tournament. “Handbags for Hope is always indoors, and we usually have as many as 400 people, so we had to go a different direction this year” Wilbanks said. “But we had to find an alternative. This is where all our scholarship funds come from.”

Kayla Pierson, YPN’s Board Liaison commented. “This scholarship goes to Montgomery County, Fort Campbell, and Stewart County high school seniors. In the last four years we’ve raised over $60,000 for the students. Last year we awarded 32 scholarships. We hope to award at least 20 this year. Scholarships are $500, $1,000, $1,500 and $2,000. The committee looks at students’ GPA, community service, leadership skills, and overall academic achievement.”

Persist without exception. Valerie Hunter-Kelly Leader | Legend | Legacy
The Unmovable Valerie Hunter-Kelly Valerie Hunter-Kelly was an icon, a leader, as well as a business and real estate tycoon. Dressed in red, she added incredible signature flair to everything. Nationally recognized on multiple occasions, she was the pinnacle of professionalism and achievement. She was, as her daughter Nicole describes, unmovable; referring to Valerie’s uncanny ability to be unapologetically, unabashedly herself. Her daughter Ashley says, “She was just a really singular kind of person; she was always herself.” Nicole tells VIP, “She did a lot of things first in Clarksville. She would do something, someone else would copy it, and she would do something else.” Valerie was truly a brilliant, elegant master of her craft. Her husband Mark says, “Both personally and professionally, Valerie could be very driven.” He continued by recalling a real estate conference he and Valerie attended. The lessons imparted shaped their future. “One of the things that all great business have in common is a set of core values.” Mark says. The lesson that reverberated in Valerie’s mind was: Persist without exception. Mark fondly
reminisces, “If there was a way to do it, she would do it. She coached and mentored to that.” Though the concept came along well after their eldest left the house, Nicole recalls, “Persist without exception was part of our family ethos.” It was simply something inherent to the very core of Valerie’s character. If there was a moment that could capture the essence of Valerie and her aptitude to captivate, it came on an otherwise unseeming day- career day at Kenwood Middle School. To set the stage, this career day was as ordinary as ordinary comes. Parents stood in front of the class, students half paid attention. That is, until Valerie walked in the room. True to her form, dressed in red, microphone in hand, Valerie strutted the aisles of the classroom taking questions and engaging the class. Nicole begins by saying, “She brought her own microphone to career day. That was very her, very over the top. That moment was exactly her. She had a certain natural star quality and did not feel the need to suppress that. For the young women in the room that was very formative.”
“She was very funny, and I am not sure that it was always on purpose. I think of her coming to career day, she a had such a flair for presentation, walking through the aisles taking questions like Oprah,” Ashley laughs. After a jovial moment, Ashley contemplates, “As I get older, I have become more like my mom. She taught me how to know my worth and advocate for it.” Compounding on her sister’s thought, Nicole says, “I saw her as someone who had a lot of power on a personal level.” Nicole pensively continues, “She didn’t really talk about a lot of her accomplishments; she took them in stride. She was a very private person. A lot of what I do know is through my own observations added up to the constellation of different people’s perspectives. She has an image that people liked to comment on and were impressed by.” Ashley candidly shares, “I used to always have this fear that I didn’t share enough of myself with her, but as I got older, I realized she really saw us in a way that I couldn’t understand.” After a moment of meditative reflection, Mark concludes by saying, “She made me whole.” FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK! • 15

Cross Creek Clays Member Appreciation Day Story & Photography by Tony Centonze Cross Creek Clays recently held a Member Appreciation Day, where club members enjoyed a free round, food, fun and prizes. “Joseph Calabrace is the owner of the club, he is a plank-holder for the 160th Night Stalkers,” Melissa Wright said. “Joe got into sporting clays about four or five years ago, and fell in love with it. He decided to build his own place, and we opened in May of 2018.” Wright is the manager of the gun club. “We also have a grounds manager who takes care of everything on the outside,” Wright said. “That includes setting all the targets, and keeping the facility and all the stations stocked, clean and organized for our shooters. “We host events for different local organizations each year. I would say there are about twenty each year, groups like Habitat for Humanity, Loaves & Fishes, and Manna Cafe. We recently helped APSU Athletics create a shoot.” For Member Appreciation Day, Wright says, it’s the club’s chance to treat the members a little extra special. “Today we host our Club Championship for our members. They have paid money to be a part of the family here, so, when they come and shoot during a regular day, they get their golf cart for free. Today, they get their round and cart for free. It’s a day for us to give back to them. We have a bunch of prizes to give away, a Big Green Egg, some shooting glasses that are really expensive, things like that. It’s going to be a great day.” Find more information at www.crosscreekclays.com.

Schedule timeslots for your guests! Avoid a traffic jam, and have plenty of time with each car load with some loose timeslots. 3. Balloons & signs are your BFF. When it comes to these, we think the bigger the better! Both make the cutest props and Instagram worth backdrops. 4. Set up a curbside game! Silly wedding games, cornhole, anything to get the giggles going. 5. Treat your guests to a goodie bag! Goodie bags are a sweet, thoughtful addition to let your guests know that you care about them and appreciate their time! 6. The last one is for the host and hostess, comfort is key! Your day might feel a little long, so be sure to stay comfortable. Happy party planning!

Mastering Charcuterie Workshop Story & Photography by Tony Centonze
Connie Sue & Hailee Isom
A limited number of guests were lucky enough to attend a recent Charcuterie Workshop, led by Hailee Isom, at Hopkinsville’s historic Alhambra Theater. “I’ve been doing this as a hobby for a couple of years,” Isom said. “I started just putting together little care packages for people during quarantine, then everybody started messaging me, asking me to do birthdays and anniversaries. This has really turned into a business, just over the last four months or so. Now, I’m starting to help people with their event planning, weddings and showers.”
Colleen & Jon Gibson
Margaret Prim is the Executive Director of the Pennyroyal Arts Council. “This is our third workshop,” Prim said. “The pandemic shut down the theater in March. It has been difficult, so we turned to our love of food, and the culinary arts, something we had some history with, and we developed a community cookbook. “The book, Let Us Entertain You, gave us a chance to tell the story of the Pennyroyal Arts Council and the Alhambra Theater. We were able to get ten business sponsors, and, thanks to them, now that the book is on sale, we can reap all the benefits. We just got our first 1,000 copies. It’s beautiful, inside and out.”

ricka and Luke were married on December 27, 2020 at Ely’s Mill in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. With their immediate families present, Ericka donned a stunning off-white and blush lace dress to match the rustic setting, while Luke looked superbly dapper in his Army blues. The wedding date has a very significant meaning for the two; Ericka suffered a stroke three years prior, which completely altered her future plans and ultimately led her straight to Luke. Once the worst day of her life, December 27th is now her most treasured reminder of life and love.

FORT CAMPBELL SPOUSES CLUB
Take Me Out to the Ball Game
luncheon
Story & Photography by Tony Centonze Crystal Garcia, President of the Fort Campbell Spouses Club has risen to the challenges of this unprecedented year, and continues FCSC’s good work in the community. “This year, we’re doing our best just to keep the camaraderie going,” Garcia said. “Our social events are still happening every month, as much as life will allow.” Everything FCSC does throughout the year is to support local charities, and raise money for scholarships. “Our luncheons are just an opportunity for this community, and all the spouses, to get together, have a little time to talk, and get to know each other. We get to meet and welcome new spouses to Fort Campbell, but we also spotlight a charity each month.” “FCSC’s recent spotlight was on Spring Meadows Senior Living. They gave us a list of items they need,” Garcia said. “We have collected games and puzzles, things that will help them socialize with their families and friends, which has been difficult for them this year.”

Wish Upon a Wedding Wish Upon a Wedding is a nonprofit that provides weddings and vow renewals for couples facing serious or life altering health challenges. Beginning in 2009, Wish Upon a Wedding has given over 150 couples the chance to have a beautiful, wonderful wedding. WUW collaborates with wedding professionals and wedding industry businesses to provide an entirely complimentary wedding. Though not based in Tennessee, this niche nonprofit has changed the lives of a local Nashville couple! Amanda & Sean were recipients of a WUW wedding, and they were also the mile-marking 150th celebration. When Sean and Amanda met, Amanda already had terminal cancer. As the couple tells it, Amanda was upfront with Sean before the first date, even encouraging him to leave on that date and ones to follow. Sean declined. For him, it was love at first sight. Their love for each other is as beautiful and tenacious as Amanda’s fight. Although still fighting tumors, and going through radiation, Amanda maintains an easy going, life loving, effervesce.

HOLIDAY MARKET Story & Photography by Tony Centonze
Amy Rogers, Christian County Chamber’s Director of Membership and Fundraising, and Rachel Spurlin, Director of Operations, recently scheduled a Vendor Fair in Hopkinsville, and perfect weather to go with it. “We had a meeting, and wanted to do something for our membership, something that was free, that would spotlight their business, and give them an opportunity to get out and share all that they have to offer the community,” Spurlin said. “Yes, to promote our local businesses, that’s the biggest thing,” Rogers said. “We understand, with COVID-19, things have been really difficult for small businesses owners this year. Our members do a lot for the community, so, it’s important to give back to them. We also have some non-members here today.” “It’s set up like a vendor fair,” Spurlin said. “We have about twenty vendors with us this afternoon, and some food trucks too, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels and Holiday Burgers. It has just been a spectacular day.”

35TH ANNIVERSARY
GANDER MEMORIAL REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY Story & Photography by Tony Centonze Fort Campbell’s 101st Airborne recently held a 35th Anniversary Gander Memorial remembrance ceremony at the new memorial site, which was dedicated last year. Lt. Wayne Clifford & Jenny Clifford
The memorial consists of two monuments and 256 Canadian sugar maple trees. It was built to honor the memory of the 248 soldiers and eight crew members who lost their lives when Arrow Air Flight 1285 crashed in Gander, Newfoundland, shortly after takeoff on the morning of December 12, 1985.
Col. John Cogbill & Jenny Cogbill
The Soldiers, primarily assigned to 3rd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, were returning from a six-month peacekeeping mission in the Sinai Peninsula. This year, due to COVID-19 safety concerns, the event was by invitation only, and was not open to the public. Guests were asked to adhere to all COVID-19 safety guidelines, including the use of masks. The event was also streamed live on the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Facebook page. We’re here today, hosting a fundraiser at Cross Creek Clays that will benefit Habitat for Humanity,” Legends Bank’s Britney Campbell said. “This is our annual Game Changer event, a charity event we’ve done for the last four years. We wanted to work with Habitat for Humanity. We already have employees who volunteer with them, so we thought this would be a great local organization to give back to.” Campbell says sporting clays is something different, but it’s outdoors, and COVID-19 friendly. “So, this is a great way for us to bring people together for a great cause,” Campbell said. “We have 80 shooters on the course today. Our goal is to raise enough money to co-sponsor a home for a local family. For us, this will be a 360 project. Our employees will also be volunteering to help build and dedicate the home.”

The Hardwood Grove By Lindsey Sims On November 31, 2019, Danny Hall opened The Hardwood Grove for business. This small, veteran-owned, and one-of-a-kind business offers a plethora of wood working services. From raw wood purchase, to wood working classes and unparalleled furniture pieces, The Hardwood Grove is a gem on Madison Street. Similar to its owner’s disposition, there is far more going on than just what the façade reveals. Upon opening the doors, customers will be greeted by an incredible scented potpourri of kiln dried Appalachian hardwoods, sprinkled on shelves and around the stores’ walls. The rear of the shop leads to the second storefront which currently houses large slabs of various varieties; the second storefront will soon house handmade, decadent furniture. As we are all too familiar, COVID-19’s fallout forced small business owners to become more creative. During the five months the storefront was shut down, Danny found another avenue to help others venture into new territories of woodworking – epoxy. The Hardwood Grove launched its very own brand of woodworking deep pour epoxy for
making river tables and other epoxy resin art. Single Barrel Deep Pour, which is made in Tennessee, is the first veteran-owned epoxy on the flourishing market. In addition, The Hardwood Grove will soon be launching more products to help woodworking enthusiasts venture into uncharted territories of home décor and furniture design. Furniture design is nothing new to Danny either. For the last two years, he has made furniture professionally, and is well known for his solitary custom pieces. From conference tables, to cutting boards, small boxes to full kitchens, he designs and builds everything from raw materials in his shop. In the Spring, The Hardwood Grove will begin hosting date nights, and woodworking lessons. In addition, Danny is looking to extend his veteran outreach, which he is exceptionally passionate about. Danny has had personal experience with woodworking being therapeutic for treating veterans with PTSD and TBI, as well as Purple Heart recipients. There is something unique about sharpening tools and working with wood. FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK! • 59

New Year’’ sEve Live At The Alhambra
Story & Photography by Tony Centonze The new season of Live at the Alhambra kicked off on New Year’s Eve with two performances by Jaimee Paul and Leif Shires.
Celia Blauser
“This is opening night of the Live at the Alhambra series,” Margaret Prim said. “We’ve been doing this for more than forty years. We do five or six concerts each season, and have quite a large season ticket holder base. Our 2021 season has been much delayed and looks quite different than it normally does. Tonight, we’re doing two shows to keep our attendance levels within proper social-distancing guidelines.
Pam & Joe Vance
“Our performers tonight are Jaimee Paul and Leif Shires, a wonderful jazz duo from Nashville, Tennessee. They have a five-person band that is fabulous. We’ve had them before, and they are great. We are livestreaming tonight’s event, so a large number of our season ticket holders will be joining us from home. “With COVID-19, safety has to be our priority, but we are excited to have these great performers, and this is a great way to start the new season.”

CLARKSVILLE'S SPAM THE LOVE Story & Photography by Tony Centonze Loaves & Fishes new facility was the site of an unusual event recently, as Kimo’s Hawaiian Grill attempted to set a new Guinness world record for the largest ever Spam Musubi. “We’re calling it Spam the Love,” Kimo’s owner Dar Place said. “We are going for the Guinness world record, and we wanted to make this a fun day for everyone, but, it’s really about coming together at the very end of 2020, as a community, and feeding people who need it the most.” Kenneth Stephens, Dirmon Vanderpool & David Sawyer
The previous record was 681 pounds. Place and his team were going for 800 pounds, but overshot, and may have finished with a number closer to 1,200 pounds. “That would almost double the current world record,” Place said. “We’ll get it weighed and confirmed by Guinness, then this will be deconstructed and fed to the homeless by the good people here at Loaves & Fishes.

“We are hosting the Holiday Market at Downtown Commons from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., today,” Elizabeth Quinton said. “We are doing our best to keep everyone properly socially-distanced. Masks are required for everyone, and though it’s still early, I’m thrilled already by today’s great turnout.” Shoppers enjoyed great weather, a wide range of arts, crafts and handmade items from which to choose, and delicious food from the local food trucks on site. “There are more than 35 vendors here,” Quinton said. “The weather is perfect, and the variety of products includes everything from woodworking, to specialty boutique items, to calligraphy, and photography. There’s a little bit of everything.” Curtis Driver & Julie Moffitt

3rd Annual Turkeys for Troops Story & Photography by Tony Centonze James Corlew Chevrolet, F&M Bank, LifePoint Church and the Maynard family were the four title sponsors of this year’s Turkeys for Troops.
Alex Grubbs, Emily Harkleroad, Reid Brown & Morgan McMahon
“This is our third-year hosting and sponsoring this event, and we are expecting 2,000 people to come out today,” James Corlew’s Jason Blurton said. “The first year we gave out 1,000 turkeys to active duty and veteran military members. Last year, we went to 1,500 turkeys, and this year it’s 2,000. We hope to continue to grow this event every year.” GFS General Manager Nathan Rees says he was honored to be asked to participate in this event. “GFS donated 2,000 turkeys this year,” Rees said. “This is our first year to be involved. They reached out to us and told us what they needed. We said, that’s not a problem. It’s awesome just to be a part of this, and see this happening in the community.” “I think we’re still on the same track, despite the pandemic,” Charlie Koon said. “We’re very sensitive to the COVID-19 issues, so we’re wearing gloves and masks. We’ve been doing drive-thru since the beginning. This is our third year, so we’ve figured it out. As in year’s past, everybody is really friendly, and really receptive. I believe the troops really appreciate what we’re doing. But, we do it because we appreciate what our troops have done for us. It’s an honor for us to give back.”

MONTGOMERY COUNTY VETERANS COALITION
Annual Legislative Meeting Story & Photography by Tony Centonze The Montgomery County Veterans Coalition, led by Sherry Pickering, held its annual legislative meeting at the Montgomery County Commission chambers. The early morning meeting was attended by local veteran group leaders and members, as well as local legislators.

Daniel Chase
“We have meetings every month, but we have been affected by COVID-19 this year,” Pickering said. “We’ve been making decisions on how to conduct our monthly meetings based on several factors. Some meetings have been held on-line. When we do get together, we follow all the rules regarding distancing and masks, etc.” Prior to COVID-19, Pickering says as many as 50 to 60 people would regularly attend the monthly meetings. “Our Legislative meeting is really important,” Pickering said. “It educates our veterans on what is coming down the line from our representatives, and allows them to interact with our elected officials. People can be intimidated if they don’t know who represents them. We advocate for our local veterans, but, it’s always important for them to be empowered to advocate for themselves. We were thrilled to have Representative Jason Hodges, Senator Bill Powers and a member of Congressman Mark Green’s team.”

Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts

Wreaths Across America Story & Photography by Tony Centonze Dozens gathered on a recent cold December morning to honor American heroes at Riverview Cemetery, and participate in Wreath’s Across America, a nationwide event.
Don Royce
“We realized the City of Clarksville had never officially taken part in Wreaths Across America,” Bill Harpel said. “We came together quickly to make this happen. We acquired the wreaths, and discovered that there are about 300 veterans buried here. On this property lies a veteran from every war in which the United States has ever fought.”
William Welty
Riverview Cemetery was once owned by Valentine Sevier. He donated the land, and it became known as the City Cemetery on February 23, 1800. The name was later changed. “There will be about 2,200 ceremonies like this across the country,” Harpel said. “We appreciate the Heroes of ‘76, who will present the colors today. Also, Mayor Joe Pitts and others who will take part in today’s ceremony. We are pleased to be doing this. Family members are here to place wreaths on their loved-ones’ graves. Volunteers are here to help place wreaths on any of the other veteran graves, all of which are marked with flags.”
Correy & Sonny Emmert
Mayor Pitts participated in the ceremony, and spoke afterward. “It was a beautiful and moving ceremony, and the most appropriate time of year to do it. I’m just gratified for every person who answers the clarion call to serve our nation as a member of the United States military.”

EAT, DRINK, & BE SOCIAL
YADA
It all starts with a conversation. On a recent afternoon, Frank Tate and Danielle Stack were discussing ways to meaningfully contribute to locally owned restaurants feeling the impacts of COVID-19. Frank and Danielle brought VIP into the mix, and we all came up with the concept Eat, Drink & Be Social. The first Eat, Drink & Be Social event was at Ilona’s Table. Since then, we have visited Los Hermanos Mexican Grill, Kimo’s Hawaiian Grill, Yada, and Wicked Good Sandwiches. We have created an Eat, Drink & Be Social lineup, and restaurants are in the queue for the next few weeks. This series is an informal, come & go lunch, and generally starts at 11:30. The support our community has shown each restaurant is very Clarksvillian. Each gathering has been above expectation in attendance, and each subsequent event is even larger than the last. There is always a buzz of conversation: introductions to new people, warm greetings from friends, and elated hellos from people who have been kept apart by COVID-19. It is, in a word, incredible. We are exceptionally proud of Clarksville. To come Eat, Drink & Be Social with us, check out VIP Clarksville Magazine’s events, or W. Danielle Stack Farmers Insurance on Facebook!
