TEMPLE & HOGSETTE LAW GROUP: A

New Chapter in a Familiar Story

Hatfield Temple is proud to announce that it will now be Temple & Hogsette Law Group and welcomes the addition of its newest partner, Alec Hogsette. Since 1953, this law firm has stood as a beacon of integrity, trust, and unmatched legal experience. The firm has seen significant expansion and growth over the past few years with office locations in Conway, Dillon and Chesterfield. It is now the largest personal injury law firm based in the Pee Dee region. This name change reflects the firm’s evolution and continuous growth while paying homage to its rich history. As we begin the new year, we embrace a fresh chapter while reaffirming the values of community leadership, exceptional legal representation, and neighborly service that Temple & Hogsette Law Group is rooted in.

Temple & Hogsette Law Group’s history can be traced back to its founding by Peter D. Hyman. A man of humble origins, “Pete” earned legal degrees from the University of South Carolina and Harvard University. Known for his fierce advocacy and even fiercer friendships, Pete left an enduring legacy in Florence - whether as a driving force behind the establishment of Francis Marion University or

through his heartfelt treatment of clients, whom he often considered close friends. His unwavering dedication to service and leadership continues to serve as the cornerstone for the firm’s guiding principles today.

Since 1989, Hood Temple has carried the torch of Pete’s legacy through various name and partner changes. A Florence native, he earned his undergraduate degree at Wofford College and law degree from the University of South Carolina. Hood’s career has been marked with many notable achievements, including but certainly not limited to, serving as past president of the Florence County Bar Association and the Injured Workers’ Advocates association. However, his career has and will continue to be defined by his deep personal connections and loyalty to the community and his clients.

Photography

Hood’s extensive dedication to community service is a reflection of the firm's core values. He was appointed by the late Senator Hugh Leatherman to the Commission of Higher Education, a position he held for twelve years, and for over 20 years has served on the Board of Trustees for Florence-Darlington Technical College. He has been a catalyst for initiatives such as Camp Pee Dee Pride and ScienceSouth. Routinely recognized for his leadership and professional excellence, he has received numerous accolades, including the South Carolina Trial Lawyer Association’s Public Citizen’s Award recognizing excellence in community service, recognition as a Top 10 Best Attorney in South Carolina for Workers’ Compensation, and an AV-rating from Martindale-Hubbell, which recognizes the highest level of legal ability and ethical standards.

While the name is changing, the vision is not. “We will remain steadfast in the firm’s foundational values of personalized service, extraordinary representation, community service and leadership, and compassion. As we expand and adapt to meet the ever-evolving needs of our clients, the Temple & Hogsette Law Group remains dedicated to the principles that have been ingrained since 1953,” says managing partner, Hood Temple.

Alec Hogsette brings a wealth of experience and perspective to the Temple & Hogsette Law Group and marks an exciting evolution of the firm’s legacy. A graduate of Sewanee: The University of the South and the Charleston School of Law, Alec’s dedication to his profession and community is evident in his numerous roles and recognitions. Alec serves on the South Carolina Bar Association’s Board of Governors and has been recognized since 2020 on the National Trial Lawyers Association’s list of South Carolina’s Top 40 Under 40 personal injury attorneys. He has served as president of the Florence County Bar Association and on the governing boards of several local nonprofit organizations.

A member of the firm since 2020, Alec is widely known for his compassionate representation and skill as a litigator. Prior to joining the law firm, he defended personal injury claims on behalf of defendants and insurance companies. Now, he uses that experience to help counsel his clients and advocate on their behalf. His commitment and approach are sure to have a lasting impact on the firm for many years.

“Alec is a talented attorney with tremendous vision. I am inspired by this partnership as the firm continues to build upon the legacy of excellence and commitment to client service that has been a hallmark of this firm since 1953. Our clients can expect the same level of dedication and unwavering support as we move forward together,” says Hood Temple.

Hood and Alec stand at the head of a dedicated team that is nationally recognized, driven by service, and rooted in the Florence community. Exceptional attorneys such as Edward Henderson and Katherine Ryan offer not only

expertise to their clients but care as well. Ed, a Wofford College and the University of South Carolina School of Law graduate, started his career as a Marine and now focuses on personal injury law while continuing his service to our nation in the Army National Guard. Kattie, a Duke University and Cumberland School of Law at Samford University graduate, guides her clients through legal processes with compassion and respect. Additionally, Hood, Alec, and Ed have all achieved the status of Super Lawyer, a prestigious, national award voted on by their peers and recognizing exceptional work in their practice. The experienced staff also includes Audra Marine, Terra Stokes, Buffy Coward, Joelle Temple, Vickie Graham, Conway Miller, Sandra Herron, Rebecca Bailey, and Brittany Carroll. With over half of the staff having been with the firm for more than a decade, Temple & Hogsette Law Group are proud of the stability and experience we bring to every case.

The Temple & Hogsette Law Group name signifies a seamless blend of tradition and forward-thinking innovation as we continue to offer comprehensive legal solutions to our clients and commitment to this community. As we embark on this new chapter, we thank Florence for being a home to us and look forward to serving it for generations to come.

Finding Light in the Blue:

Heather Evans Smith’s Personal Journey Through Grief and Renewal

When Heather Evans Smith first began to explore the depths of her emotions through her camera lens, she was confronting a storm brewing long before it broke. For years, a quiet melancholy had simmered beneath the surface of her life, reaching a turning point when she was 44—a number she later discovered aligned with research identifying this age as a critical period for depression in women. Her father's passing during this time became a catalyst, transforming simmering sadness into an undeniable weight. But rather than allow herself to be consumed, Smith turned to her art to process and reflect.

Her latest body of work, Blue, is as much a personal reckoning as it is a visual narrative of shared experiences. In a series of stunningly symbolic compositions, Smith invites viewers to sit with her as she grapples with profound loss, shifting identities, and the oftenoverlooked trials of midlife. Through her lens, Blue becomes more than a color associated with sadness—it transforms into a canvas for introspection, resilience, and rebirth.

Smith’s photography is deeply informed by her southern roots, her experiences as a mother, and the imaginative inner world she cultivated growing up as an only child in rural North Carolina. Each frame feels like a whisper of her past and present, connecting themes of memory, family, and transformation in a way that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

“For some, my dad’s death might be seen as the spark that ignited my depression, but the sadness had been quietly simmering for years,” Smith shares. “I was just beginning to recognize it a few years into my 40s.” This revelation weaves through Blue, a project that reflects not only her own struggles but also the broader challenges faced by women navigating midlife: the demands of aging parents, the complexities of maturing children, and the relentless changes brought by time and hormonal shifts.

As you step into Gately Gallery to view Blue, you’re met with a sea of emotions rendered in rich, melancholic hues. Smith’s storytelling mastery is evident in every frame— subtle yet bold, intimate yet expansive. Each image asks the viewer to linger, to search for meaning in the shadows, and to find themselves in the quiet corners of her compositions.

Heather Evans Smith is no stranger to acclaim. Her work has graced the walls of prestigious institutions such as the Fox Talbot Museum in England and the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. She is a four-time Critical Mass Top 50 recipient and has earned accolades such as the 2022 Silver List and the Me&Eve Grant. Yet, even with global recognition, Smith’s art remains deeply personal, rooted in her own experiences while offering space for others to reflect on their own.

Gately Gallery will host two significant events in conjunction with Blue . An Artist Reception on January 23rd at 5:30 pm provides an opportunity to take a first look of Blue. Attendees will also get to meet Smith and hear firsthand about the inspirations behind her work. On March 6 at 6:00 pm, the gallery will present Into the Blue: Breaking the Stigma of Depression , a panel discussion and a more in-depth presentation by Smith. This program features she alongside Anna Caroline Chinnes, Ph.D., L.P., Assistant Professor of Psychology at Francis Marion University, and Nadine Livingston, M.Ed., MBA, MA, Director of Outpatient Clinics at Pee Dee Mental Health Center. Together, they will explore themes of mental health, resilience, and the healing power of creative expression.

For Smith, Blue isn’t just about loss—it’s about finding beauty within the struggle, about seeking renewal in the face of change. Her art, like her journey, is an invitation to reflect, to heal, and to find hope in the darkest moments.

Heather Evans Smith resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with her family. To experience her work, visit the exhibit at Gately Gallery or explore her portfolio online at www.heatherevanssmith.com

UNSEEN DANGERS:

HOW STREET DRUGS ARE BECOMING MORE LETHAL

Street drugs have become more dangerous and deadly over the past several years. The ongoing drug crisis was responsible for an estimated 107,543 American deaths in 2023 compared to 67,367 in 2018. Seventy percent of the 2023 deaths were related to fentanyl use, and thirty percent to other synthetic stimulants. Fentanyl and other synthetic drug seizures by law enforcement have also increased. By the end of 2022, more than 35 million fentanyl pills were seized, compared to 289,000 in 2018.

face-to-face contact, making it harder for law enforcement to trace.

The increased amount of stronger synthetic drugs on the street has led to a substantially increased risk of drug overdose. People may buy a drug and unknowingly face a dangerous and unpredictable mix of fentanyl, methamphetamine, heroin, or an everchanging addition of new chemicals. Although there are fentanyl test strips available, other synthetic drugs are harder to detect and treat.

combination is often misleadingly sold as heroin. Xylazine is frequently added to pressed pills and sold as counterfeit drugs for ADHD, anxiety, and depression. Commonly known as “tranq” or “the zombie drug,” Xylazine slows down brain function, breathing rate, heart rate, and blood pressure. When combined with an opioid such as fentanyl, it can greatly increase the risk of overdose and death. Regular use of Xylazine can also produce sores on the body that often become infected and need medical attention to heal.

Nevertheless, it is still recommended to use Narcan if Xylazine use is suspected since it is most often combined with fentanyl or other opioids, and Narcan may help prevent an overdose or death. Buying drugs has become an increasingly dangerous “buyer beware” market and a slippery slope with many unknowns around the synthetic drugs being consumed.

Individuals who use substances may feel a false sense of invincibility and confidence that they can handle the drugs they take, whatever they are. But over time, a person who is addicted can become frustrated as they may not be getting high anymore, using drugs only to avoid getting sick, or having more episodes of overdosing. Substance abuse can also lead to serious life problems, such as the loss of a job, the erosion of relationships with children, or the deterioration of a marriage or partnership. Thankfully, the frustrations of addiction can often lead to motivation to reach out for help. Substance abuse treatment is the most effective road to recovery for someone dealing with drug or alcohol addiction.

Substance use disorder treatment may include inpatient care, medical detox, and outpatient care, or a combination, depending on the patient’s needs.

At HopeHealth, substance use disorder treatment is available at our Florence, Manning, and Orangeburg locations. Patients start with a diagnostic assessment to determine an appropriate treatment plan. As an outpatient treatment facility, our treatment plans include medication assisted treatment (MAT) for a diagnosis of opioid use disorder or alcohol use disorder, or without MAT for all other substance use disorders.

MAT is used to normalize brain chemistry and body functions, block euphoric effects, and decrease cravings. These evidence-based medications can also prevent or treat an overdose and help promote longterm recovery. At HopeHealth, these medications may include Narcan, Vivitrol, Sublocade, or Suboxone.

Some may be referred to an intensive outpatient program or inpatient treatment facility if medically warranted. We work with each patient’s unique needs for an appropriate level of care that is updated regularly as the patient makes progress.

Drug addiction takes time to overcome, but there is always hope to create a new life and become free from addiction. If you or a loved one is suffering from a substance abuse disorder, take the first step towards healing and reach out for help.

Danielle Williams, MS, LAC, LPC

Danielle Williams is a behavioral health counselor, specializing in alcohol and substance abuse treatment at HopeHealth and is accepting new patients. You do not have to be a patient at HopeHealth for substance abuse treatment. A brief and confidential over-the-phone assessment is required prior to an appointment. Call (843) 432-3690 for more information about substance use disorder and treatment.

A First Step Toward Achieving Your Goal

Alcohol-free alternatives for social occasions

As we enter a new year, many eagerly anticipate the opportunity for a fresh start, filled with promise and potential. It's a time when goals are set, and resolutions are made in hopes of enhancing, organizing and improving our lives. While many resolutions tend to focus on diet or exercise, these aren't the only pathways to improving our health and wellbeing.

One of the most popular resolutions in 2024 was reducing alcohol consumption, or even committing to a period of complete abstinence. The benefits of this resolution extend far beyond avoiding the risks of intoxication, the dangers to oneself and others, or the unpleasantness of a hangover. In fact, cutting back on alcohol can boost overall happiness, as it strengthens your ability to handle life's challenges. By consuming less, you may not only save money, but also sleep more soundly, feel more energized, and potentially shed those stubborn holiday pounds. Additionally, reducing alcohol intake lowers the risk of liver and heart disease, as well as certain cancers.

To begin with, it’s crucial to consider both the quantity and the type of alcoholic beverage consumed. According to the CDC, a standard drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer with 5% alcohol by volume (ABV), 8 ounces of malt liquor at 7% ABV, 5 ounces of wine at 12% ABV, or 1.5 ounces of liquor with 40% ABV (80 proof). For women, consuming more than eight alcoholic drinks per week constitutes heavy drinking, and having more than four drinks in a three-hour period is considered binge drinking. For men, heavy drinking is defined as more than 15 drinks in a week, and binge drinking involves five or more drinks in a single sitting.

However, as we all know, the initial excitement of setting New Year’s resolutions is often the easy part. Maintaining those goals over the long term can feel overwhelming, causing many to falter along the way. Fortunately, there are strategies to increase your chances of success, especially when it comes to alcohol reduction.

The first step toward achieving your goal, whether it’s cutting back or abstaining altogether, is to develop a clear plan. Set specific goals and create a timeline for reducing your consumption or select a date to stop drinking altogether. Share your intentions with a trusted individual who can help hold you accountable. If you’ve been a long-term or heavy drinker, consider consulting with a physician to ensure you approach this change in the safest possible way.

Find alcohol-free alternatives for the social occasions that typically involve

drinking. This way, you can enjoy the activity without feeling deprived. It’s also essential to identify the triggers or emotional patterns that lead you to drink and strategize on how to manage those moments effectively.

Above all, persistence is key. If you slip up and indulge in more drinks than planned, don’t be discouraged. Simply wake up the next day with your goals firmly in mind and continue your journey. Perfection is not the aim—resilience is. Reflect on the circumstances that led to your setback and use them to strengthen your resolve moving forward. True success lies not in avoiding failure, but in continuing to pursue your goals despite the inevitable setbacks.

South Carolina’s rich history comes alive this February as Graham’s Historic Farm hosts the annual American Heritage Festival. Located in Lake City, this historic farm is steeped in Revolutionary War history, making it the perfect venue for a weekend filled with reenactments, colonial demonstrations, and engaging talks from renowned speakers.

Graham's Historic Farm, a property that has remained in the Graham family since its founding in 1738, played a critical role during the American Revolution. This was the site where Francis Marion, famously known as the “Swamp Fox,” brought British prisoners after his victory at the Battle of Tearcoat Swamp in 1780. The farm also served as a staging area for attacks and a vital refuge for Marion’s brigade as they evaded British forces led by the notorious Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton.

The American Heritage Festival offers attendees the chance to experience life as it was during the Revolutionary War and World War II. Visitors will be treated to authentic reenactments featuring Revolutionary War regiments, including the 2nd South Carolina Regiment, 3rd Continental Dragoons, and 23rd Royal Welch Fusiliers. For WWII enthusiasts, Allied and Axis encampments provide a glimpse into the lives of soldiers during the 20th century’s most defining conflict.

Historic Farm to Host The American Heritage Festival

Colonial trades and crafts will also be on display. Demonstrations include fur trading by Bobby Blackwell, blacksmithing by Keith Philips, soap and candle making by Keith Gunter, and musket crafting by Dale Smith. Guests can also learn about the colonial brewing process from Brad Lee.

Adding to the immersive experience, 18th-century sutlers and vendors such as Phil Gilson (glassblower) and Zettlemoyer Pottery will offer handcrafted goods and wares reminiscent of the colonial era.

Speakers Shine a Light on History

The festival will feature presentations from notable historians and experts, including:

• Ron Brown, ASAF Special Ops, on how Francis Marion’s guerrilla warfare tactics influence modern military strategies.

• Durant Ashmore, historian, on the pivotal role of the South Carolina militia in the Southern Campaign.

• Pat Waters, grandson of General George Patton, offering a family perspective on the WWII icon.

• Paul Graham, descendant of the Graham family, discussing the Pee Dee region's contributions to the American Revolution.

AND WWII HISTORY

Entertainment and Culture

The festival will also celebrate ScotsIrish heritage with games hosted by the Southeastern Highland Athletic Group, live music from the Celtic band Eireann’s Call, and performances by the Palmetto Pipes & Drums. A beer and wine tent and Celtic vendors will enhance the festive atmosphere.

A Historic Venue With a Revolutionary Legacy

Graham’s Historic Farm has deep roots in American history. During the Revolutionary War, it served as a stopover for Francis Marion and his partisans, as well as a supply site for the Continental Army. Documents from the era reveal the farm’s owner, Hugh Graham, and his family provided food, shelter, and support to Patriot forces at great personal risk.

The farm’s connection to history extends beyond the Revolution. Its stories of resilience, sacrifice, and strategy offer a unique backdrop to the festival, creating an unforgettable experience for history enthusiasts.

Join Us for a Weekend of Living History

Whether you’re a history buff, a fan of reenactments, or someone looking for a family-friendly cultural experience, the American Heritage Festival promises something for everyone. Witness the lives of Revolutionary soldiers, immerse yourself in colonial culture, and explore the stories of those who shaped America’s fight for freedom.

VERMOUTH FOR THE NEW YEAR:

As the calendar turns, there’s no better time to shake things up— gently, of course. This year, why not dive into something different? Vermouth, the aromatic, fortified wine that’s been the quiet backbone of cocktails for decades, is stepping into the spotlight. Whether you’re easing into low-alcohol options or just ready to mix things up, vermouth is here for you.

Bryan Holt is the owner of Cru Wine & Tap located in Downtown Florence, SC. He was the wine buyer at Micky Finn’s for over 20 years.

Vermouth: The World in a Glass

Think of vermouth as the wine world’s most intriguing friend. It’s not just Spanish, French, or Italian—it’s all three, each bringing its own twist to the party. Spain’s vermut is rich and caramel-y, served with an olive over ice. France goes dry and crisp, perfect for aperitifs that whisper, “Dinner’s coming.” And Italy? It’s bold, bittersweet, and unapologetically sexy.

Aperitivo: Let’s Talk Rituals

In Spain, Italy, and France, the pre-dinner drink isn’t just about the beverage—it’s a whole vibe. It’s about gathering, nibbling, and easing into the evening. Aperitivo (Italy) or apéritif (France) means making time to savor something—not gulp it down while checking emails. Vermouth fits perfectly here, whether it’s straight-up or mixed into something effortless.

THE COCKTAILS: OLD MEETS NEW

The Americano: A Classic That Never

Fails

The Americano isn’t just a drink—it’s an experience. Born in Italy, it’s simple, refreshing, and dangerously easy to make. Think of it as a Negroni that swapped out the gin for soda water because it knows when to chill.

How to make it:

• 1 oz sweet vermouth

• 1 oz Campari

• Top with soda water

• Serve over ice in a highball glass and garnish with an orange slice.

Effortless, classy, and you won’t feel it after two.

Pay-Per-View: Triple Threat

The Pay-Per-View cocktail is all about balance, blending three styles of vermouth—sweet, dry, and bianco—with a splash of lime and cane syrup. It’s like a vermouth tasting flight in a single glass.

How to make it:

• 3/4 oz sweet vermouth

• 3/4 oz dry vermouth

• 3/4 oz bianco vermouth

• 3/4 oz fresh lime juice

• 1/4 oz cane syrup

Shake it with ice, strain into a coupe, and sip your way into sophistication.

Why Low-Alcohol is the Move

Let’s face it: some nights call for something lighter. Vermouth-based drinks let you keep it classy without overdoing it. They’re the perfect compromise between sipping on soda water and going full martini mode. Plus, they play nice with food—whether it’s a wedge of Manchego, a pile of Marcona almonds, or your favorite pizza (you knew I’d say it).

New Year, New Rituals

So, this year, step outside your comfort zone. Mix up an Americano, or let the Pay-PerView blow your mind. Stock up on a few bottles of vermouth (sweet, dry, and bianco are your holy trinity) and start exploring.

Vermouth isn’t just an ingredient—it’s an experience, a culture, a moment to pause and savor. And who doesn’t need a little more of that in their life?

NOT VERMOUTH BUT YOU SHOULD DRINK MORE IN 2025:

Underberg: The Digestive Complement

Though not a vermouth, Underberg— an herbal digestif—deserves a nod in the broader context of European drinking culture. This German concoction, served in small, individual bottles, is made from a secret blend of herbs and spices. While it’s traditionally consumed after meals to aid digestion, its bold flavor profile makes it an intriguing addition to aperitivo gatherings, balancing the sweetness of vermouth with its herbal intensity.

Yes, South Carolina, There is a Way to Spice Up Your January. Literally.

Typically there’s a chill in our January air and sometimes snow in our upstate mountains as we celebrate the new year with new resolutions to restore, reinvent, and rediscover for an invigorating new journey into 2025. To add one more reason to venture out and brighten your January, “Restaurant Week” is January 9th through 19th in Columbia, as well as in other parts of our state. The city is also the epitome of restoration, reinventing, and discovery and celebrates its diversity of cultures throughout its history.

To that end, Columbia is also quickly becoming the place to go for restaurants that appeal to everyone's culture and specificities, and they range from informal to ethnic to high-end and even tapas cuisine. That includes architectural curiosities like the former Motor Supply Company. The old building and its name were preserved to honor its history and value to the city's economy when it was repurposed for a thriving restaurant that opened in 1989. Not only was it one of the first to launch the city on its ambitious mission but many of the building’s original embellishments are still there today. Under owner, Eddie Wales's dedication and expertise, the restaurant boasts locally sourced products, courtesy of South Carolinians devoted to supporting his farm-to-table mission with their fresh ingredients. Wales also displays works of art from local artisans and received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his efforts which he continues today.

Award Winning

Owner, Eddie Wales of Motor Supply Company

Restaurant with Katey Walsh, waitress and bartender extraordinaire at the restaurant's impressive, historical bar.

While discovering all the exciting restaurants Columbia offers, bundle up to fit in relaxed strolls and walking tours to discover more historic gems in the exhilarating January air. Its tactfully planned historic district is full of beautifully intriguing and diverse architecture and the city promises surprises around every corner, like a boxcar from the former Southern Railroad. Like the old Southern, it’s seen many a mile and now sits secluded but was an important part of South Carolina's growth and economy. It operated from 1894 to 1982  when it merged with the Norfolk and Western Railway and became Norfolk Southern, the 10th largest Fortune 500 company today. Only a few tangible remnants of its historical contributions remain, like the old rusty boxcar. It’s another voice from Columbia’s past reminiscent of its steady rise to the popular city it is today.

Be aware that this city bustles with entertainment and business opportunities and that means street parking can be difficult to find. Keep Uber on speed dial, but on the bright side, a little planning is all you need. Street parking is free after 6PM and parking garages can be found throughout so it’s wise to locate them in preparation for your visit, and another good reason to fit in a walk and burn some butter in the brisk January air.

This old Southern boxcar is a reminder of the railroads’ important contributions to the economy and livelihood of South Carolinians.

The Blue Marlin boasts traditional lowcountry fare like Fried Green Tomatoes with their signature cross-cultural dishes.

Another downtown restaurant that has become popular with locals and tourists alike is The Blue Marlin. Its historical significance is as unique as its signature dishes. It prides itself in combining the cultures of the past that created the diversity South Carolinians enjoy today with its captivating blend of West Indian, Caribbean, and African flavors, just waiting for you to discover. There’s parking right at the restaurant, but I recommend an early arrival and reservations if your choice is to drive.

Greek Restaurants, especially, abound in Columbia.  Since I wanted to experience the culture and add more Mediterranean fare to my diet I visited Ambrosia Tavern on Main Street. Plus they had me at “Eat like the Greeks,” their motto. They strive to keep it culturally correct and significant, and consequently, large groups of friends and family gather there regularly to enjoy socializing, live music, and of course their authentic Greek cuisine. Family meals are an important Greek tradition they explained to me. Typically, they said, a salata (salad) is ordered, with olive oil and feta, of course. Then the entire party orders meze which is small dishes or appetizers.  Tables will order all of them, and sample and share family style over hearty conversation, then do the same with Ambrosia’s main dishes to enjoy leisurely afternoons and evenings together.

When you walk in the door of Prohibition restaurant you’ll immediately be filled with the sense that bringing people together is top of the agenda for this new attraction. It opened in 2024 and as one of Columbia’s newest, mirrors its sister, “Prohibition Charleston.” Sumptuously casual décor with nooks and crannies offers warm spaces to meet new and reminisce with old friends while enjoying entertainment on the live stage. It boasts the “most impressive list of whiskeys in the nation,”  to join their long wine list and local craft brews. There are plenty to pair beautifully with the wide selection of meticulous and thoughtfully created snacks and shareables at this tapas-style restaurant.

If a cozy corner to share with friends is your choix du jour, add Prohibition Restaurant to your Columbia must-dos.

Remember as you gather together, that we have officially put a most challenging 2024 behind us.

Gesundheit und Glück im neuen Jahr, Santé et bonheur pour la nouvelle année, Salud y felicidad en el nuevo año, Salute e felicità

A “Nursery,” the term for a group of babies and mom raccoons) popped out of the woods and squeaked hearty thanks for dinner to their kind-hearted Columbian neighbors.

nel nuovo anno, Stin lyia Sas, and Gott nytt år,” are German, French, Spanish, Italian, Greek and Swedish and but a few salutations that celebrate our history and translate to wishing “y’all,” “health and happiness in the new year.” There’s no better time than now to start that journey, out and about in South Carolina.

A Couple’s Guide to Happy Retirement and Aging

By 2030, an estimated 20% of the U.S. population will be 65 or older, with many individuals enjoying good health well into their 80s and 90s. Yet, despite this extended lifespan, there remains limited understanding of the emotional, mental, and relational needs necessary for aging well and maintaining happiness during this significant life stage.

While much of the advice surrounding retirement focuses on financial planning, the equally crucial aspect of psychological preparation is often overlooked. For many, retirement can span a quarter of their lives, making it essential to cultivate the emotional resilience and relationship strategies needed to thrive during this phase.

A Couple’s Guide to Happy Retirement and Aging, now in its third edition, is the most comprehensive resource dedicated entirely to the personal and relationship changes that arise in later years. Rather than focusing on money management, this guide—written by an experienced psychologist specializing in work and family issues— explores the psychological aspects of aging. Drawing from the latest research and real-life accounts, it equips readers with tools to create a joyful, harmonious, and fulfilling life.

The book provides strategies to navigate the profound life changes that accompany retirement and offers practical advice to strengthen relationships. Key topics include:

A SEA TREASURE Oysters

Oysters, a delicacy from the ocean, have been a favorite among seafood lovers for ages. Their unique taste, health benefits, and cultural importance make them a fascinating topic.

Oysters have been enjoyed for thousands of years. Ancient civilizations like the Romans and Native Americans harvested them as a food source. In Europe during the 19th century, oysters were abundant and considered a cheap staple food. However, overfishing and environmental changes later turned them into the luxurious treat we know today.

East Coast oysters are famous for their distinct flavors, which depend on their local environment. These oysters are often described as having a salty taste, a firm texture, and a clean finish. Here are some common types you’ll find around our area, and you should definitely try them all!

Blue Point Oysters (Long Island Sound, NY/CT):

Medium salinity with a mild, slightly sweet finish. Firm and meaty.

These oysters are a classic choice and are widely available. They’re known for their consistency.

Wellfleet Oysters (Wellfleet Harbor, MA):

Clean and briny with a hint of sweetness and a crisp, mineral finish.

Medium-firm and plump.

Prized for their perfect balance of salinity and sweetness.

Pemaquid Oysters (Damariscotta River, ME):

Very briny with a refreshing, cucumber-like finish.

Let’s dive into the world of oysters and explore some of the best varieties out there!

Chesapeake Bay Oysters (VA/MD):

These oysters have a mild brine with an earthy, nutty undertone. They’re mediumfirm and have a less salty taste. Fun fact: The Chesapeake Bay is one of the largest oysterproducing regions in the U.S.

Raspberry Point Oysters (Prince Edward Island, Canada): These oysters are crisp and briny with a sweet finish. They’re firm and have a small, uniform size. Even though they’re technically Canadian, they’re often included in East Coast oyster menus.

Cotuit Oysters (Cape Cod, MA):

These oysters have a lightly briny taste with a slightly buttery, mineral-rich finish. They’re silky and tender. They’re among the oldest cultivated oysters in the U.S.

Duxbury Oysters (Duxbury Bay, MA):

These oysters are sweet, creamy, and lightly briny with a buttery finish. They’re plump and juicy. They’re popular for their perfect balance of sweetness and brine.

Island Creek Oysters (Duxbury Bay, MA):

These oysters are rich and briny with a buttery, vegetal finish. They’re medium-firm and meaty. They’re highly sought after by chefs.

Cape May Salt Oysters (Cape May, NJ):

These oysters have a mild brine with a smooth,

So, there you have it! These are just a few of the many delicious oyster varieties out there. Whether you prefer a mild brine or a rich, oceanic taste, there’s an oyster out there for everyone.

North Carolina oysters are the real deal when it comes to wild oysters. They grow naturally and are totally different from those farmed oysters you see in stores.

Flavor: Oysters are super clean and salty, with a hint of earthiness.

Texture: They’re firm and meaty, with a satisfying crunch.

Notes: The water where they grow is a bit salty, but not too much.

Oysters are a nutritional powerhouse! They’re low in calories but packed with essential nutrients. Just one serving of oysters has more zinc than you need in a day, which is great for your immune system and cell repair.

They’re also a great source of protein, perfect for building muscle and giving you energy.

And guess what? Oysters are loaded with vitamins like B12, D, and minerals like iron, selenium, and magnesium.

Oh, and they’re rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are hearthealthy and help reduce inflammation.

Now, let’s talk about how to choose fresh oysters. When you buy them, look for oysters with tightly closed shells. If they’re open, they’re probably dead and not safe to eat. They should smell like the ocean, clean and salty, not fishy.

To keep oysters fresh, store them in the refrigerator, covered with a damp cloth. Never store them in freshwater, because that can kill them. You should eat them within a day or two for the best flavor and safety.

Shucking oysters might seem a bit scary at first, but with practice, it becomes a breeze. Here’s how to do it safely:

1. Gather your tools: You’ll need a shucking knife and a thick kitchen towel or oyster glove to protect your hand.

2. Hold the oyster: Place it flat side up, gripping it firmly with the towel.

3. Find the hinge: Insert the tip of the knife into the hinge (the pointy end).

4. Twist the knife: Gently twist to pop the shell open.

5. Slide and Cut: Gently slide the knife along the inside of the shell to cut the adductor muscle, separating the oyster from its shell.

Remember to save the oyster’s liquor, the delicious briny liquid that makes it so tasty.

Oysters can be prepared and enjoyed in many ways, from raw to roasted. Here are some popular methods:

Raw on the Half-Shell

This is the best way to enjoy oysters, showing off their natural flavors. Serve them chilled on a bed of crushed ice with some tasty toppings like: Mignonette Sauce: A zesty mix of vinegar, shallots, and black pepper.

Lemon Wedges: A classic pairing to brighten up the briny taste.

Hot Sauce: For those who like a bit of heat.

Cocktail Sauce: A sweet and tangy favorite in s the U.S.

Grilled or Roasted

Cooking oysters brings out their natural sweetness. Top them with butter, garlic, and herbs, then grill until the edges curl.

Fried Oysters

Breaded and fried oysters have a crispy exterior and a juicy interior. Serve them with tartar sauce or on a po’boy sandwich for a classic Southern treat.

Oysters Rockefeller

This famous dish features oysters topped with a rich mixture of butter, herbs, and breadcrumbs, then baked until golden.

Oyster Stew

A warm and comforting dish made with fresh oysters, cream, butter, and seasonings, oyster stew is especially popular during colder months.

Tips for First-Timers

If you’re new to oysters, start with smaller, sweeter varieties. Add a squeeze of lemon or a dollop of mignonette for extra flavor. Don’t be scared of their texture - oysters are meant to be savored slowly. Oysters are more than just a seafood delicacy; they’re a culinary adventure that connects us to the ocean’s bounty. Whether you prefer them raw, grilled, or fried, there’s no wrong way to enjoy these gems of the sea. So, grab a shucking knife, pour a glass of wine, and dive into the briny world of oysters.
