Theusephaseisbyfarthemostcontributinglifestagewithapprox.60-90%ofthetotalcarbonfootprint dependingonbinmodel.Inacradle-to-gateperspective,emissionsrelatedtorawmaterialpre-processing ofsteelcontributewithmorethan55%oftherespectivecarbonfootprints.
Commentsontheresultstotakenotice:

B.2ChangeofPackagingSystem
ThenewpackagingsystemgenerallydecreasesthetotalGHGemissions.However,anincreaseisseenin somelifestages.Thehighershippingweightsinthenewpackagingcauseincreasesinemissionsduringthe distributionphase.Itshouldbenotedthattheinfluencefromimprovingthepackagingsystemisminor toinconsiderableforthetotalGHGemission.Figure2andTable1showtheresultsfromthecomparison.
Thewastetreatmentandrecyclingratesatend-of-lifecanvaryfromcountrytocountryandwilldepend onthespecificlifecycleforeachbin.Followingassumptionsareappliedinthecomparison:
• RecyclingrateofEPSis32.6%basedonthegeneralsituationinEU;
• Recyclingrateofcardboardis81.6%basedonthegeneralsituationinEU;
• Wastetreatmentofnon-recycledcontentiswith98%incineration.

Alongerproductlifetimemeansthattheemissionsassociatedwithmanufacturing,transportation,and disposalorrecyclingarespreadoveralongerperiod.Aproduct’slifetimeisveryimportantfordeterminingitscarbonfootprint.Dependingontheproduct,theusephasecancontributesignificantlyto theoverallcarbonemissions.Forexample,fortheusephaseofthebins,theconsumptionofbinlinersovertimesurpassestheemissionsfrommanufacturing,transportation,anddisposalofthebins.Itis aninvariablerequirementtodefineaserviceperiodaspartofthefunctionalunitinanLCA.Inmost casestheserviceperiodwillbeequaltotheproduct’slifetime.Insummary,theproduct’slifetimeplays acriticalroleinthecarbonfootprintofaproductandcalculationhereof.Alongerproductlifespancan helpmitigatetheemissionsassociatedwithmanufacturingandreducethecumulativeimpactofmultiple replacements.
