Thefullreportisavailableuponrequest.Themainreasonstocarryoutthestudy:

• UncoverthecarbonfootprintoficonicpedalwastebinseriesVipp13-17fromcradle-to-cradle withinEU;

• Compareoldandnewpackagingsystem.

BResultsandHighlightsfromTheStudy

B.1TotalGHGEmissionwithNewPackaging

Theusephaseisbyfarthemostcontributinglifestagewithapprox.60-90%ofthetotalcarbonfootprint dependingonbinmodel.Inacradle-to-gateperspective,emissionsrelatedtorawmaterialpre-processing ofsteelcontributewithmorethan55%oftherespectivecarbonfootprints.

Commentsontheresultstotakenotice:

• Theusephaseresultsmustbeinterpretedwithcareastheyarenotconsideredrobustandareonly applicableforthespecifiedchangefrequencyscenarios;

• Aconsistentlyconservativeapproachhasbeenappliedtomodeltheimpactfromsteelassuming BOFrouteforunalloyedsteelandEAFrouteforstainless,forthisreasontheimpactfromsteelis mostlikelyoverestimated;

• Retailertoend-customertransportiscut-offduetolackofdata;

ThenewpackagingsystemgenerallydecreasesthetotalGHGemissions.However,anincreaseisseenin somelifestages.Thehighershippingweightsinthenewpackagingcauseincreasesinemissionsduringthe distributionphase.Itshouldbenotedthattheinfluencefromimprovingthepackagingsystemisminor toinconsiderableforthetotalGHGemission.Figure2andTable1showtheresultsfromthecomparison.

Thewastetreatmentandrecyclingratesatend-of-lifecanvaryfromcountrytocountryandwilldepend onthespecificlifecycleforeachbin.Followingassumptionsareappliedinthecomparison:

• RecyclingrateofEPSis32.6%basedonthegeneralsituationinEU;

• Recyclingrateofcardboardis81.6%basedonthegeneralsituationinEU;

• Wastetreatmentofnon-recycledcontentiswith98%incineration.

ThebinsareproducedinEuropeandtheGHG-emissionsfromthedistributionareasfollows:

Itmustbenotedthatthetransportincludestransportfromproductionsitetowarehousetoretailers inEU,basedonthesold-tosplitfrom2020-2023.Thetransportfromretailertoend-consumerisnot includedduetolackofdataandcaninsomecasesbenoticeablebasedontransportmeans,distance,and allocation.

The30yearslifetimeismainlydeterminedfromatestperformedbyTeknologiskInstitut(180407-6Pedal bin,2023)provingthatVipp13-17binsaredurableforatleast100.000open-closecycleswithapplied weightonthelid,whichisequalto9-10cyclesadayfor30years.Also,thebinsareserviceable,andwe offerspareparts.

Thestudydoesnotdocumentthe“actual”contentofrecycledmaterials.Forcalculation,marketaverage recyclingratesforthedifferentmaterialshavebeenapplied.

Q:Ingeneral,whenlookingataproducts’lifecycleassessment,howimportantistheproduct’slifetime fortheentirefootprint/CO2 emission?

Alongerproductlifetimemeansthattheemissionsassociatedwithmanufacturing,transportation,and disposalorrecyclingarespreadoveralongerperiod.Aproduct’slifetimeisveryimportantfordeterminingitscarbonfootprint.Dependingontheproduct,theusephasecancontributesignificantlyto theoverallcarbonemissions.Forexample,fortheusephaseofthebins,theconsumptionofbinlinersovertimesurpassestheemissionsfrommanufacturing,transportation,anddisposalofthebins.Itis aninvariablerequirementtodefineaserviceperiodaspartofthefunctionalunitinanLCA.Inmost casestheserviceperiodwillbeequaltotheproduct’slifetime.Insummary,theproduct’slifetimeplays acriticalroleinthecarbonfootprintofaproductandcalculationhereof.Alongerproductlifespancan helpmitigatetheemissionsassociatedwithmanufacturingandreducethecumulativeimpactofmultiple replacements.
