IDEA HUB Design Abstract

Phase 3

Design Abstract Personal Abstract

Hypothesis The way that media (internet) companies deal with attention as a commodity, currently and how they will develop this in the future, is of a great relevance to the attention economy. As the information economy grows, more media companies will be born and grow over time – their physical requirements will also adapt to this change. In response to the ‘Tech City’ initiative by the government (UK Trade & Investment), the aim is to create a Media Centre for tech companies to start-up, grow, research and collaborate, in an environment that incubates ideas, encourages collaboration between individuals and to creates a platform for the companies to disseminate the information on a local level, for example in the provision of conferences.

Methodology An example of the shift in the meaning of the space occurred within the existing building; the

sorting office was built for the process of moving physical information, but now plays host to a number of different functions. The sorting office is unoccupied space that is constantly subject to discreet changes in spatial configurations to accommodate for its current programme.

The first allows the environment to shift around them, where as the active user participates in the movement, to portray a sense of shift through physical contribution.

The Media Centre typology will be hybridised with the shifting nature of the Sorting Offices current programme, as a space for temporary events – covering Music, Art, Installation, Fashion and Private Events.

A building that seemingly changes and moves but aims to do so with minimal mechanisms. This will be achieved through the combination of specific architectural memes relating to the temporary event volumes and a rule set allowing the buildings primary tectonic, columns, to be manipulated to create complex visual transparency and porosities.

Design Criteria A result of its temporary reuse is when one large space is being used; it is very rare when another part of the building is occupied. Occupations occur in clusters of temporary activity, and then leave without a trace. The building will respond to a hybrid typology that incorporates a sense of shift/change through the incorporation of curated volumes suspended within a structural grid. There are two user types when sensibility of shift is involved, the passive user and the active user.

Designed as floating boxes amongst a forest of columns, the temporary events programme consists of spaces with specific functions. The boxes have been hierarchically organised in terms of their likely engagement over a 24 hour period. The more regular the use, the lower the box within the building. For example, the Art and Installation spaces are open throughout the day, where as the fashion, music, private events are likely to occur over a short period, usually in the evening.

The columns twist according to attractor points on a level by level parameter which affects each column uniquely.

38

Energy Use / Al Fresco Strategy

Phase 3

ENERGY USE / AL FRESCO SPACES The IDEA-HUB is primarily a semi enclosed building, much like a car park, with fully enclosed boxes within. The heating for the building is focused upon these enclosed spaces where a central heat exchange unit supplies each box with heating. The boxes have their own temperature controls to ensure that the spaces are comfortable and appropriate for the type of event occurring within.

Phase 3

Technical Development Summary

TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT The Technical aspects of the design thesis are focused around the issue of casting complex and unique concrete forms using a reusable method. The twisting concrete columns which embody the design interest of focus and distraction are relatively complex in their form and consequently would require expensive and bespoke formwork to be built.

Upper Frog Detail

Typically, the formwork for creating in situ bespoke components is the highly expensive in terms of the overall construction cost of the building because on many occasions the formwork is unable to be used on other parts unless highly standardised.

Upper Frog Detail

The method for creating the bespoke twisting columns uses the techniques of concrete block work and post tensioning.

Tensile Cable

A universal jig was developed which utilises two parametrically manipulated surfaces that are able to replicate any undulating surface from a computer model. Each column is divided into a series of blocks that each hold a number of details to allow them to be positioned accurately, and allow the tensile cables to run through the length of the column so that they are able to be post tensioned. The frog details ensure that a minimal amount of mortar is able to be seen.

Design Fiction

DESIGN FICTION The following storyboard demonstrates a particular type of operation for the IDEA HUB where a person off the street is able to come into the building, develop an idea for a potential new type of software, such as a mobile app, and develop the idea through to a prototype. This prototype is able to be presented to potential investors within the same place. The building also hosts a number of conference and workshop type events, as well as the temporary cultural events that occur in the boxes. Because of this, the IDEA HUB is a platform for showcasing new products towards potential investors. The character used in this design fiction (highlighted in red) is depicted discovering the building and over several weeks, developing a prototype for a new mobile app which was then funded by an investor. (Start-Up tenants are highlighted in green.)

1. Approach from Museum Street

5. Start Up Desk Space Rental

Pedestrians walking from the British Museum towards Covent Garden, along Museum Street, will be able to see glimpses of the IDEA HUB. This will become more apparent as they approach New Oxford Street, where the large opening in the buildings envelope will encourage them to walk inside.

Desk space is able to be rented from Google for use by individuals or teams who are working on Start-Up businesses.

The louvres on the envelope will seemingly move as pedestrians walk around the building to reveal different spaces within.

The desk spaces are enclosed and secured through the use of access cards. Some of these spaces are large, to encourage individuals to interact with one another, and others are compact (on the higher floors) for the purpose of privacy and secrecy for some highprofile projects.

2. Building Function

6. Conference + Presentation

Glimpses of the inside functions can be seen from the outside, where some office spaces, art and installation spaces show some of their contents.

The Music Pill is also used for conferences in the IDEA HUB. Events such as developer talks, TED, product launches, etc. are all able to occur in this enclosed space.

Upon entering the building, the information desk will be the first stop for a new visitor. Here they are able to learn about the weekly event programme including all the temporary events that regularly change.

3. Central Working Cafe The main tenant is Central Working, a company that operates cafes and small eateries for the purpose of encouraging work in more social environments. The company is located in kiosks throughout the building, on most floors, within the breakout spaces providing coffee, refreshments and food. These social spaces have some permanent semienclosed circular spaces which visitors/start-up desk tenants are able to use for both work and socialising.

4. Serendipity One of the main design criterion for the project is to increase the chance of serendipity occurring within the building. This is addressed through the vast amounts of breakout spaces that are scattered throughout the floors. For example a person who is visiting the building for the reason of viewing a temporary event such as an art exhibition may decide to have a coffee in one of the breakout spaces. They may sit next to a software developer who is renting desk space. Because wifi is available throughout the building, developer and visitors are able to work from anywhere; encouraging people to work from different places throughout the day.

In the regular events organised by Google, investors are also encouraged to visit the IDEA HUB, to allow the Start-Up’s to gain exposure and possibly gain an investor into their products/company.
