GALLERY WALLS ARE A GREAT ELEMENT TO INCORPORATE INTO YOUR
HOME DESIGN. Gallery walls help to inject color and pattern into a space. Not only do gallery walls take up a lot of blank space, but they allow the art-lover in all of us to showcase our favorite pieces.
With a gallery wall, there is no limit to your creativity. At first, you can start with your favorite images, whether that is a family photo or your favorite piece of art, and then start to add more sentimental items like your favorite postcard or an antique plate. However, before you start drilling holes into your wall, there are a few steps that you will want to keep in mind.
STEP 1: SELECT YOUR AESTHETIC
Ask yourself what type of style is the most prominent in your home design. Is is eclectic? Or romantic? Or maybe modern with a vintage twist? While your gallery wall is a statement, it should feel cohesive in your space. If you are more on the eclectic side, a more cluttered and colorful gallery wall, may be what you are looking for. If you want something that looks more classic, opt for evenly spaced artwork with matching frames.
STEP 2: LAY EVERYTHING OUT Before you pick up your hammer and nails, lay out your gallery wall pieces on the floor. Start with a centerpiece and build out from there. While planning, consider spacing out similar pieces. You will want to have am even mix of sculptural and framed artwork.
STEP 3: DO A DRY-RUN Once you are happy with the layout of your gallery, mock it up with paper. Using kraft or tissue paper, trace your frames and tape the trimmed pieces to the wall. Make sure you are considering the space and the proportion of art to the size of the space. This may seem like an extra step, but it will help prevent any unwanted nail holes.
STEP 4: GET TO HANGING With your plan set in place, you can now start my favorite part, hanging your pieces up. Using the mock gallery as a guide, carefully hammer the nails into the wall and tear away your placeholders. With a little work and careful planning, you will soon have a beautiful wall gallery to admire.
