About Me

Who am I ? Hi there! My name is Virginia

Chan. I’m an Industrial/UX/UI Designer born

in the US, raised in Panama, and graduated from Industrial Design in Taiwan. As a person, I am very dedicated, optimistic, and organized and consider myself as a good team player and a curious researcher, always up for new challenges. (I’m a fast learner too!) Outside of work, I like to cook, sing in the shower and take pictures all over the world. I love to design because is a different way of solving problems with creativity and empathy, especially when is related to user centered design. I’m currently looking foward my next challenge and adventure in the world of design, so I can keep learning and improving my skills.

BraAid Dressing Aid OVERVIEW Bra Aid is a portable device that helps women wear a bra with one hand, letting amputee women feel more indepentent.

Project 1 // BraAid Dressing Aid for women

Year

Type of Project

Duration

User’s background Many amputations are performed every year, in which 60% are from the upper limb. Women without an arm faces many difficulties in daily life: one of them is wearing a brassiere, which is a task that needs two hands in order to be done.

In the US, more than 41,000 persons are registered who had an amputation of hand or complete arm . Single handed or arm injured women cannot wear brassieres by themselves, so they lose confidence.

Problem The main problem is that they cannot reach the other side of the bra. As they pull one side of the bra, it moves the position, slipping away, making it hard to connect both sides, but with BraAid, not only amputated but wounded women can also be able to wear pretty bras easily with a single hand.

Design concept BraAid is a small clip designed to help armless and wounded women wear a brassiere easily with a single hand. Our mission is to pump up the user’s confidence, let them be able to wear brassieres as they like anywhere, anytime, without being helped by others. Its function is to fix one side of the bra at the front, so the other hand can hook both sides of it at the diaphragm zone, and then easily turn around the bra and wear it correctly.

Background Research Single armed and wounded women mostly depends on others to help them wear brassieres, or they simply don’t wear any, which it lowers their self-esteem as a women. Many of them have tried DIY projects or current dressing aids, but haven’tfullfill their needs, since they are big and complicated to use. But with BraAid, they can easy wear their brassieres independently, getting more confidence as a woman.

Design features

1 BraAid is a small clip that secures one side of the bra in the front, so women can fasten their bra by themselves. Easy to use and small enough to travel with.

2

Users can decide which color of clip they want to use. Easy to separate with one hand.

ELEVA Ladder OVERVIEW ELEVA is a safety ladder that facilitates the task of moving an object to a higher place without losing contact points.

Wrong

2 CONTACT POINTS

FALL!

Defining the problem When there’s a need to move something to a highe place, people tend to LOSE a contact point since both hands are holding the object, or loses two points when climbing (only rests a foot) making the situation more dangerous.

Background Research 3 CONTACT POINTS

Many ladder users doesn’t take into consideration the safety regulations or doesn’t have the knowledge of them, such as the 3 points contact rule. Safety regulations are very important, but still many users ignore them, which causes many accidents. In order to be considered SAFE, the user should keep 3 points of contact with the ladder (two hands and one foot or both feet and a hand).

Correct

Design concept

ELEVA ladder will help users move things from one point to a higher place, so that the person can climb the ladder without loosing the 3 points of contact. It can make the task like moving books, boxes, and other objects upward easier, and also avoid accidents.

ELEVA is made for home use only, reason why it is designed to look more modern and is smaller than other industrial ladders.

Background Research Patients have to be turned over each 2 hours in order to avoid skin ulcers. Repositioning a patient is an activity requires at least 4 persons. Our job was to create a product that could help nurses to turn over a patient, protecting them and to reduce the force needed in order to move them from one side of the bed to the other.

Pressure ulcers are caused mostly in these places.

Defining the problem

The problem of turning over a patient is that once turned over, they aren’t located at the center of the bed, but at one side. The picture shown is the DIY product a hospital made . They used pvc tubes, mixed with strings, plastic bags and fabric. Some problems found were: - Pvc tubes are too hard and can harm the patient - It is hard to understand how it is used - Heavy and hard to storage.

Design concept

“Moveme is a pad that helps to transfer a patient from one side of the bed to the other by sliding it, in order to turn over 90 degrees. Benefits - Less number of nurses - Reduces bedsores possibilities - Lower the difficulties in the process

Design considerations

Breathable

Antibacterial

Low friction

Defining the users

Moveme is designed to help nurses to move the patient from one side of the bed to the other, reducing the danger of health problems such as back pain.

It is also designed for the patient to be comfortable enough since it is placed below them for a long time of period.

Design features Continous track loop

45 Degrees side cuts

Easy, fast storage

Made of fabric, the continous track reduces the force needed to move the patient because of a low friction material.

The cuts are made to focus the force to equal so the fabric reduces wrinkles.

Easy to storage to reduce space. Just fold twice in the middle and become easy to carry.
