A message from the president
The Year For All to Get Involved...
H
appy New Year & Welcome to All!
Words can never express how excited and pleased I am to serve as your President. From the moment that I was voted in as President, I have thought endlessly about VRPS, what it means to me and the impact it has made on me professionally & personally. As I began this journey I am spending time reflecting on what VRPS means to me and how can I share this with the members to motivate and keep them engaged. This year I will be completely focused on how I can make a difference in the organization and the members. While I may not personally be able to reach every member, I will do my best to communicate and keep our members engaged.
VRPS has some of the most dedicated, committed, hardworking individuals who maintain professional standards and ethical values.
Margaret Thorne

Recreation moved 3 of its full time staff into the newly restored Pleasant Grove House Museum, an 1854 Rivanna River plantation home that stands as the centerpiece at Pleasant Grove Park. The Pleasant Grove House is associated with many of the “founding families” of Fluvanna County and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1745, John Haden purchased the land on which his great grandson William D. Haden would build this brick home in 1854 and name it Pleasant Grove. Although much like many other plantations in Virginia, its place in the County’s agrarian landscape and its role in social and economic history are significant.

Summer Camp Opportunities Expand in Hopewell
T
he City of Hopewell Recreation and Parks Department is celebrating a variety of new summer programming opportunities. The department has partnered with the John Randolph Foundation, a local charitable organization dedicated to improving the overall health and wellbeing of the citizens of Hopewell. The department was awarded a $25,000 grant from the John Randolph Foundation in 2015 which allowed for an expanded variety of weeklong, themed summer camps. The department just received another grant from the John Randolph Foundation for $20,000 for sustainability and additional expansion through the summer in 2016.
Summer camp programs now include a variety of local trips to sporting events, cultural and historical sites, and amusement parks. Additional nature and outdoor elements have been added to camp offerings, as well as more opportunities for water play at the Hopewell Community Center and Pocahontas State Park.
Through the expanded opportunities, participants enjoyed a variety of activities pre-
viously not accessible. Summer camp programs now include a variety of local trips to sporting events, cultural and historical sites, and amusement parks. Additional nature and outdoor elements have been added to camp offerings, as well as more
opportunities for water play at the Hopewell Community Center and Pocahontas State Park. Another exciting addition was a weeklong camp dedicated to local heroes. Participants got to hang out with members of the Hopewell Police, Fire and Sheriff’s Departments while touring their facilities and completing a variety of themed activities.
Summer program participants also enjoyed expanded arts programming, which resulted in two significant pieces of artwork. Campers completed a giant 30-foot “thank you” banner, made entirely of painted handprints, which was presented to John Randolph Foundation staff. Also, participants helped create a chalk mural depicting some of Hopewell’s most notable and historic sites, which is now proudly displayed in the lobby at the Hopewell Community Center. Hopewell Recreation and Parks is very excited about all of the new summer programming opportunities and is looking forward to the many memories that will be created in 2016!

T
he famous Swiss psychologist Carl Jung said this about selfawareness, “everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” He also added, “When an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside, as fate.” The recreation profession, LTI, self-awareness, and Carl Jung….what in the world does one have to do with the other? Actually, the overlap is significant! Our personalities and how we view ourselves and interact with others greatly impacts how successful we are in our profession and in our daily lives. Unfortunately, Carl Jung won’t be speaking at LTI in April of 2016. He passed away in 1961. Don’t be disappointed! The LTI committee has been working at length to put together an amazing slate of speakers and experiences. This year’s LTI will allow you to share, be shaped by others, and leave you with a great, career awakening experience…beginning and ending with you!

About You!
Your eye opening experience at Wintergreen will begin with a Meyers Briggs personality assessment and an opening session entitled, “That’s Just Who I Am!” This opening session will help to equip you with a self-awareness that will constantly and consistently be revisited throughout your LTI experience. As you learn effective leadership practices and how to manage change you will begin to understand how your personality traits impact your ability to communicate with others as well as how they affect the productive and non-productive interactions that you may experience in your day to day life. Capping the LTI experience will be a riveting send off by Zin White, a highly decorated civil servant and military veteran who will captivate us all and that “We Can Make a Difference and It Begins with Me!” For those seeking to develop themselves professionally or further their careers, make your attendance at LTI a priority. For supervisors, managers, and administrators, seek out those in your organization that strive to excel professionally and make a commitment in cultivating their talent and desires to shine in our field. Your organization and your staff will benefit from it. Our profession will benefit from it. I challenge you all to learn today, lead tomorrow, and inspire forever!
