The main question was: How does the spatial configuration of the interfaces between the public and the private impacts the quality of urban life? The hypothesis was that a thoughtful configuration of these spaces in urban contexts promotes social and economic development, increases public security, and enhances quality of life. After thorough investigations, the project chosen to demonstrate these ideas, was an Urban Redevelopment Plan for an underperforming, formerly industrial, and seafront located neighborhood in Santo Domingo, the biggest city in Dominican Republic. The goal was to revitalize this area through the generation of a compact, mixed-use, and people-oriented urban area that could serve as a reference for future developments.
after the investigations, the next step was to select a location based on 3 fundamental criteria in order to accomplish the best possible outcome. when the location was succesfully selected, it was time to develop the site analysis, which was made at a metropolitan, urban and local scale.

SELECTION CRITERIA The 3 criteria that needed to be met in order to select a site for the project were: low population density, low commerce and mixed use concentration, and good connectivity with the rest of the city. All this so the neighboorhood selected could be activated and revitalized through the proposal and the conversations with the community.

Arroyo Hondo is a neighborhood located in the center of Distrito Nacional, the most important city in the Dominican Republic. The goal was to analyze its current situation in terms of environmental strenghts and weaknesses, economic development, and social interaction in order to generate an integrated urban proposal that could turn this area into a more lively, people-oriented, and environmentally sustainable community. The proposal focused on three major areas of improvement: reclaim and protect illegally occupied parks and rivers, revitalize currently dispersed areas generating urban centralities through commerce and public space, and finally, reconect the neighborhood through a new local transportation proposal.
this neighborhood is peculiar in that is geographically centric but it doesn’t serve the city as a center. it has one of the highest percentages of green areas but they’re all private. and it has three of the most important big stores but the commercial concentration is low. so the first step was the site analysis. San Cristóbal has a trifold importance. The first colonial sugar mills in America were located here, the first Dominican Constitution was drafted and signed here, and the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina was also born in San Cristóbal. The fundamental goal was to redesign an existing ecological park in the center of the city, in order to strenghthen its impact to the city as a whole and to the community. The conceptual basis of the proposal is the fusion of four major aspects we found were relevant; history, culture, society, and environment. The plan was to reconect the park with the existing urban fabric through the design of four overlapping circuits in the park: ecological circuit, recreational circuit, and cultural-historical heritage circuit.
site analysis in this project was specially important. San Cristรณbal has a huge importance not only for the province, but for the whole country. in this project history, culture, and community interconect to conform a public space that represents the identity and strenght of the context. LOCATION

In the past years, the Latin American and Caribbean vernacular habitats have been transforming at an unprecedented speed. These changes, are visible not only at an architectural scale, but also, at the urban and territorial dimensions of rural areas. This research aims to figure out how is the physical configuration of vernacular habitats in the Dominican Republic changing and to what extent is affecting the social, economic, and environmental spheres of rural settlements. To do this, the district of Sabana Buey in Peravia is selected as a case study subject. Elements like divisions and barriers, home configuration, internal organization of space, and the way people appropriate and uses urban space are observed, in order to unveil a major transformation in Dominican way of living.
currently, Sabana Buey counts with 494 dwellings. through a site analysis, it could be noted that 110 from those 494 dwellings are vernacular, constituting 22% of the total. from these 110 dwellings, there are only 9 left that have thatched roofing. LOCATION

SANTO DOMINGO , D . R .
2018 PROPOSAL
Mejoramiento Social is a neighborhood located in the most overcrowded and overlooked district in Distrito Nacional, Santo Domingo. Right now, in this location is being developed what will be the largest and most advanced Public Healthcare Facility in the Dominican Republic. As a response to the future flow of people, services, and activities resulting from this large-scale project, comes up an urgent need to revitalize and restructure the neighborhood’s current underperforming urban spaces. The proposal has three categories of intervention: land use regulation, street redesign, and accesibility/transport. Starting in the area where the Healthcare Facility is located, the main goal is to generate a healthy, humane, and accesible urban environment. 28
after a thorough site analysis, assesing the community’s needs, and evaluating the situation, three categories of intervention were established. the first one would be the street redesign, then the land use regulations, and ultimately, working on accesibility and transport. Enrique Peñalosa already said it: ‘In terms of transport an advanced city is not one where even the poor use cars, it’s one where even the rich use public transport’. Mobility, more than a matter of money or technology is a matter of equality. This is what this project was about; working in the design and adaptation of a sustainable urban mobility proposal for the city of Santo Domingo. The plan consists in the implementation of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in the most important urban corridor of Santo Domingo. The goal is to improve efficiency and capacity of the bus-based public transport system of the city, by including lanes dedicated exclusively to buses and giving them priority over private cars. I was in charge of analyzing urban design aspects and the retrofitting of the stations.
the proposal consisted in 10 stations located in the whole extension of one of the most important corridors in the city. this is one of the possible configurations, in this case the stations are located in the middle of the street along with exclusive lanes for the buses.

Pedernales, is the second most important zone of the Caribbean in terms of Biodiversity and Eco-touristic potential. Nevertheless, in most areas of this municipality reigns poverty and informality. The fundamental goal of this project was to activate the area in terms of tourism, economy, and environmental conservation through a compact, mixed-use, and ecologically sensitive urban proposal. Seafront protection, quality public spaces, bikeways and bus lanes, mixed-use, and touristic development were among the interventions that conformed the proposal. This allowed me to participate in a large-scale design process and learn about landscape urbanism tactics for fragile ecosystems.
this proposal was part of a larger scale territorial planning framework. the fundamental goal was to develop an urban proposal to activate this area while carefully taking into account conservation issues for this fragile ecosystem. presented below is information about the context and the final master plan.
