The 25th Anniversary Committee put on a first class event. We would not have events like this without the members who volunteer their time to plan and “Pitch in” at the event. My thanks again to Tim Evans and the committee members. Mid-August saw a drive/tour/meal to Port Alberni including a guided tour of the historic McLean Mill, a visit to the Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Centre, and a drive to Sproat Lake. Thanks to Dan Bourlet for organizing this driving tour. The events continue into September, with a Drive to Gold River on the 10th to raise funds for the Gold River Food Bank, and the New Member Social in Cobble Hill on September 18th. At the latter event, the Club treats members who joined over the last year to lunch to welcome them. We like to see non-new and long term members attend as well to help welcome the newbies and share stories and Weinformation.closeout

September with the Fall Time, Speed, Distance Rally. This is always a fun event, with many lively stories told at the lunch at the end of it. Rowland and I won this event last year but if we decide it’s my turn to navigate this time, well, it could be a reversal of fortunes as well as roles, but it will still be fun. No experience is necessary, and the Club pays the registration fee for firsttimers so you can look at it as a Club sponsored training run.

In September, the Board’s attention necessarily turns to preparing for the Annual General Meeting, to be held this year on October 16th. At this meeting, elections are held for Board positions. Our Treasurer, Secretary, and Mid Island Director will stand again for their current positions, and I will stand again for President. Ron Dempsey intends to run for Vice President, which will leave the South Island Director position vacant. Wendy Woodley, after many years as Up Island Director has decided not to run again, so that position will be vacant as well. Most of the Chairs have indicated that they will stay on in their current positions. I am grateful to all of the current Executive who have decided to continue on, and grateful to those who have served for so long. Any members who would like more information about the South and Up-Island Director positions can talk to me, the current Area Director, or any member of the Board. All Board positions are up for re election at the Annual General Meeting, and any member or co-member may run for any position. Any member interested in standing for election, for any position, should contact the Nomination Committee Chair Tim Evans at Pleasetimothyeevans@proton.me.readtheHelpWanted

PCA Zone 6 Representative, John P Sommerwerck e are now home after visiting four Zone 6 regions: Canada West, BC Interior, Oregon, and Inland Northwest. First up was a trip to Sun Peaks and Escape 2022. The drive up and down the Sun Peaks access road made every outing fun. Next was a trip to Oregon for their summer picnic and an opportunity to visit the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum. I never realized how massive the Spruce Goose is. Our last outing was to Inland Northwest Region’s 50th Anniversary gala. While there, we got re-acquainted with the tour leaders that led Nancy & I on our very first PCA driving tour, many years ago. Thank you, again, Keith and IRick.am

happy to report the revamped Zone 6 website will go live the end of August. My thanks to Heinz Holzapfel, Oregon region, for his efforts. The site has five key components: Our Home page will note marquee events from the Zone 6 regions and PCA national. The ‘About Us’ section will describe our Zone and its history. The ‘Events’ portion will have direct links to each of our region’s web pages and their corresponding events pages. We will also have links to PCA National’s webpages and a ‘Contact Us’ section. I urge you to go visit the updated site: ZONE 6 PCAHome. We will be making quarterly updates to the site to include a photo section, software updates, etc. I continue to enjoy seeing Zone 6 region activities celebrated in PCA’s Panorama magazine. This month my thanks to Nancy Mao/Canada West, Gary Proefke/ Cascade, Mike Friend/Olympic Peninsula, Ken Moore/High Desert, Steve Fairbrother/Vancouver Island, and Andrew King/Silver Sage, for promoting Zone 6 activities. We head out next to Cascade Region Southern Chapter’s Coffee & Cars. Then over to High Desert Region’s hosting of the Sun River Treffen. We hope to see many of you as we travel around Zone 6. Stay healthy and we will see you in the Zone. John W

Editor, Steve Fairbrother Bye Macan S. Hello Macan S.

We have been on the fence about changing our Macan S for a while now. There is nothing wrong with it, just like the previous 2016 Macan S we had before this one it’s just that it is time for a change. However the big decision this time is . . . do we wait until the long awaited Electric Macan (or whatever it will be called) is announced/ available or “bite the bullet” now and trade-up when it is released if we really want to go that route?

So a lot of pondering happened in July, but in the end we decided to go ahead and order a new Macan S now and deal with the future when it arrived. So off I went to see Matt Kennard at Porsche Centre Victoria and discuss what build slots were coming up. Luckily there were two S slots and one base model in September and one of the S models was spoken for so that left a base or the S. I did ask about a GTS build but Matt said they were not being delivered until November 2023!!

I had driven a base 2 liter model a few times and decided that the S was the best model for us, so I went into the Porsche.com configurator for the Macan S to decide all the options that we wanted/needed/wished for. There are a myriad of choices and this was the first time that I had to decide what options to pick as all our previous Porsches (a Cayenne S, and the two Macan S’s) were new off the showroom floor. So, Sport Exhaust Tick, Carmine Red paint - Tick, Pano roof - Tick, full body and side blades paint - Tick. However some things were “removed” - like the Premium Plus package and then only some of those package parts were added back to make way in the budget for other options like surround camera and adaptive cruise control. After a week of tweaking to the options list, it was time to lock in those options on August 5th and we are happy with the resultant look. The Carmine Red is often used on GTS models and the black trim pieces reinforce that look we think. The build is in September and delivery should be November 2022. All we have to do is sell the current Macan S, which apparently should not be a problem in the current market and because of its low mileage of just over 30k kms for a car we bought in 2019. So if you are seriously thinking about buying a new Porsche, go for it, it’s a fun process and budget permitting, you might end up with your perfect car. Steve

Five out of seven of the current Board members intend to stand for re election when the positions come up for election at the AGM. The two which do not yet have declared candidates are two of the three Area Directors. An overview of the positions is provided here to help members determine if they might be interested in the position. In addition to the two Area Director positions, the Board is in need of a new Chair for the Black Rock Committee. Information on this position is provided as well.

Members who would like more information on these positions may contact Garth Webber Atkins, President, or the current Area Directors: Ron Dempsey, South Island Director, or Wendy Woodley, Up-Island Director. President, Garth Webber Atkins

The AD attends monthly virtual meetings of the Executive Committee, which is made up of the elected Board members, and the appointed Chairs. At those meetings, the AD provides any information they may have about area member preferences or interests, as may be needed. Along with other directors and chairs, they also contribute generally to discussion and decisions on Club matTheters.AD acts as a resource for members in their area, fielding questions about the Club and the work of the Executive Committee, and promoting upcoming Asevents.anelected

board members, the Area Director votes on matters requiring Board direction or approval.

Two Area Director Positions: South Island and Up-Island

The Area Director (AD) acts as a liaison between the Board of Directors and the members in the geographic area related to the position.

Another main role of the Area Director is to work with the Executive Committee and members to ensure that some events take place in or near the AD’s geographic area. Historically, Area Directors have planned and led at least one driving tour per year.

The Chair of the Black Rock Committee leads a team of member volunteers to plan, organize and roll out the event within a budget and framework developed in discussion with, and approved by, the VIR Board. The Chair is the primary contact for the hotel, and engages with local government and community organizations as needed, as well as representatives of the supported charities. The Chair is also responsible for raising additional funds as needed. Project management experience or good organizational skills would be beneficial. Members who would like more information on this position should contact Dan Bourlet. Other Board positions While the current Board is only actively seeking interest for the positions known to be vacant at the end of the year, members should be aware that any member can run for any Board position. Board positions are elected for oneyear terms, so must stand for re-election each year. If the incumbent is uncontested, they will win the position by acclamation. If another member has been nominated, there will be a secret ballot at the AGM. Any member interested in learning more about, or in running for one of the seven Board positions should contact the Nominations Chair, Tim Evans. Garth

Black Rock Committee Chair “Black Rock” is Vancouver Island Region’s signature multi-region event. It is a weekend event held at Black Rock Resort in Ucluelet, and has typically included a welcome social, two days of different driving events, charity fundraiser with silent and live auctions, members’ banquet, community beach barbeque, a show and shine, and walking events.

A year late but worth waiting for, our 25th anniversary celebration was held on Saturday, August 6 on the upper rugby pitch at Shawnigan Lake School. The cars looked great parked on the lush, green, manicured field and it was a beautiful, hot, sunny day. Thankfully, we had a big tent that was able to accommodate everyone to help us stay cool. The afternoon included a celebration of all our Past Presidents, Show & Shine awards, draw prizes, a 50/50 draw to support the Shawnigan Lake Historical Society and their museum project, and the grand prize of a set of Continental Tires. Attendees also visited displays by Garage Kings Floors, Gain Detailing Studio and Porsche Centre Victoria. The dinner barbecue catered by the School was delicious with a choice of beef, chicken, or salmon burgers and a selection of salads and desserts. To finish it off was a big 25th anniversary cake. The planning committee had been working on this milestone event since 2020 with the original event planned for the spring of 2021 on our actual anniversary at a hotel 19 and restrictions and we had to

Very few 968’s were delivered to North America and even less to Canada. In its reign from 1992 to 1995 a total of only 2,234 Coupes were destined for all of NA. Of that number, only 121 were shipped to Canada with the C36 Canadian specification and options which included heated seats and headlight washers. Luckily I’ve had this Canadian specification 968 for several years now and it’s become my daily driver, but only in the good weather of course! The stunning ‘violet blue metallic’ colour which attracted much attention was to become the focus of trying to understand the Porsche paint code system. The result was very encouraging, for this car turns out to be a rare 968. However, my first thoughts were about Porsche’s

Recently I have been asked “what is your favourite Porsche?” Well, I normally reply “a roaring 993 with the air intake package”, or sometimes “the docile 912 with its mechanically noisy old 356 engine.”

Well, last couple of times I just said “the 968 Coupe” to which the response has been much eye blinking until I quickly follow up with “it could have been called a Series 3 944 (which also could have been called a series 2 924S) such is the heritage of the 968. It is not a 944. According to Porsche, it is 83% new, but it’s a good response for those not familiar with the 968, and there are many who have never even heard of the Porsche 968.

Some passers-by have even asked if it’s a new line of Porsches and the rear view mirror has to be checked often watching out for followers closing in to read the numbers 968 on the rear. Maybe Prince fans or possibly due to its rarity?

However, back to the Porsche claim of the 968 being 83% new…… The biggest innovation was a brand new, all aluminium, 250bhp 4-cylinder 3 litre engine that introduced for the first time, VarioCam variable valve timing on the twin camshaft cylinder head.
