Every school is unique and has its own educational vision. The first step for us is to listen, so we understand what you are trying to achieve. Then we show you different ways of making it happen. And we don’t just specify our own designs. If we know another manufacturer has the perfect product and it meets our quality criteria, we’ll suggest it.

Adelaide works on our design team. She is an MA student who works with us part time to fund her studies. Our flexibility offers her real world experience and she brings us her highly qualified, box-fresh design skills.

We’re problem solvers at heart. We constantly question the status quo, wonder why things are they way they are and ask if there is a better way.
PLAN
Our plans are highly regarded as some of the clearest and most detailed that our clients have seen. (When designing whole schools we print out plans on A0 size paper, which is big enough to wrap a Year 7 in – should you need to.) It’s all part of helping you understand how your spaces will look and feel.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could move stuff around and create clear space? Then one room could perform many roles. Could an English classroom turn into a drama studio, or the hall could become an open plan learning zone? Surely, if classroom chairs were more comfortable, students would concentrate better? Wouldn’t it be great if you could dip into ICT as and when you felt like it? These are the scenarios our design team seek to make real.
03 A perfect fit CONSULT
Measure it, measure it again, go away, have a cup of tea and then go back and measure it again... Or ask us to do it for you. Whether it’s a single classroom or an entire school, you need to be sure it fits, that you can get power to where you need it, and that it allows enough space for moving around. Our space planners provide detailed layouts so you can see how it’s going to work.
John, one of Isis’s furniture consultants, worked with Lesley Carroll, Business Manager at Uxbridge High School, to design the furniture schemes for their new sixth form block. The school needed fully integrated technology and the ability to accommodate a broad range of teaching styles across open plan learning zones and traditional classrooms. You can read more about this project and see the hugely successful result on page 157.

Welding, rather than crush-bending, is robust and looks better. Alloy inserts make joins ultra-strong and means the screws will stay put. Compact laminate, which most of our table tops are made of, is one solid piece so the edges won’t peel off your tables. It’s this attention to detail that makes all the difference.

06 Fitting in with you Jackie Lightfoot (above, right) designed Lamu when she saw how a static, traditional chair was at odds with the natural dynamism (a.k.a. endless fidgeting!) of young children. As well as a seat that was fun and engaging, Jackie wanted to be sure any child using Lamu would naturally assume good posture. Levent Caglar (above, left), chief ergonomist at the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA), helped us test Lamu to ensure its ergonomic credentials. We have been working with Jackie to introduce Lamu to the world, by welcoming it to the family of unique Isis products.

Marilyn runs our office-based sales support (you might be lucky enough to speak to her when you call). She works closely with Tom, who schedules all our teams, to make sure we’ve captured every piece of information

Our furniture doesn’t simply roll off the end of a machine. It’s a fundamental part of Isis quality that our unique designs are assembled by hand by our highly skilled production team. We use quality components and materials which, when combined with the care and attention of our assembly team, create a product that is a cut above in terms of quality.

Our installation team are all fully trained Isis employees. We don’t rely on third parties to deliver our furniture (unless it’s a single item and you’ll know exactly what to do with it) and we don’t just leave it in reception for your caretaker to deal with. We unload, unpack, install, make sure everything’s working, show you how to use it, clear away the packaging, sweep up and – once we’ve seen the smiles and you’re happy – only then do we leave.
We’ve just opened a new REAL (Rethinking Education and Learning) Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Just like the original one in Abingdon (at RM’s UK headquarters) the REAL Centre ‘down under’ is a permanent interactive

exhibition space where people can see and try out our furniture in context with learning resources and technology from RM.

Ian is one of our installation managers. He and his team have one of the best jobs in the business – because they get to see the smiles when the new furniture is revealed.
11 Happy endings “Love it’ and ‘thrilled’ are two of words we most often hear when we check in to see how the new furniture has been received. ‘Great for collaborative working’ is often said about VerTable. ‘I love the fact that I can have English and Drama in the same room’ is what we’ve been told about t41 tables. Ipsley Middle School Agile, versatile and comfortable spaces where teachers can change the layout according to their needs – that was Ipsley Middle School’s vision. Each of the new classrooms has a different colour scheme reflecting the unique culture of each class. t41 tables can be used in circles, rows or waves and in one classroom a single t41 sits next to the teacher’s desk for one-to-one. Newton Chairs provide ergonomic seating for pupils of all heights. Teacherwall keeps all the AV equipment neatly contained and Beanbags add a splash of comfortable colour. Twickenham Academy One of the first Kunskapsskolan schools in the UK, Twickenham Academy’s curriculum model prioritises independent and autonomous learning. To deliver this curriculum they wanted a space where students can choose where and how they work. One old sports hall and a few weeks later, this open plan learning zone was open. Acoustic Pods, StepSeats, VerTable Interactive, banks of integrated IT desks and a range of soft and upholstered seats support collaboration or individual study. When asked what they thought about their new learning space, one student said “It’s easier to learn here because we’re excited to learn”.

Uxbridge High School Reverse the trend of declining sixth form numbers by making Year 11 students stay on at the school and attract new students: this was one of the main objectives of the new sixth form, business and maths block at Uxbridge High School. We needed to deliver the ‘wow’ factor alongside seamlessly integrated IT, both to deliver the curriculum and to engage these tech-savvy students. Working with our parent company, RM, Isis designed and installed furniture throughout the block including a café with Internet touchdown points, an auditorium, traditional classrooms, breakout areas and an open plan ‘experimental learning zone’ on the top floor.

Exeter University Exeter University’s vision was to have an innovative and technologically advanced teaching space to help deliver IT-enabled teaching and training to their Sports and Health Science students as well as medicine and dentistry students from neighbouring Peninsula College. Isis designed and installed a state of the art IT suite with 100 integrated IT desks in colour-coded sections that enable four teaching or training session to take place simultaneously. Along with video conferencing facilities this room provides access to remote learning and, with the IT hardware concealed in the desks, it can also be used as a standard training room.

One of our engineers will come into your school or college to service your furniture, clean it up, repair any damage, replace worn parts where necessary and ensure it stays looking good for another year. It’s an easy way to protect your investment and prolong that ‘new car smell’ which, we hope, will motivate them to ‘keep it nice’.
