RACE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
A message from the race director Welcome to the 32nd Subaru IRONMAN® Canada in the spectacular Sea to Sky corridor.
PHOTO: BONNY MAKAREWICZ / WWW.PICTUREWHISTLER.COM
Whistler, Pemberton and the SLRD, not only offer spectacular scenery but also offer many exciting opportunities to watch these amazing athletes in action.
I would also like to thank Subaru and the communities of Whistler, Pemberton and the SLRD whose support makes all this possible.
What could make a more impressive start to the race than having the sun rise over the snow-capped mountains that overlook Rainbow Park while the swim start is in action?
Finally, I would like to thank you, the spectator, for giving the athletes the encouragement they need to help them get across the finish line and hear those immortal words: “You are an IRONMAN®.”
With the bikes passing through Whistler three times and Pemberton twice, there’s certainly no shortage of vantage points to cheer them on. Using the Valley Trail for the run portion gives spectators the chance to get up close and personal with the athletes, feel their highs and lows, and to let them know you’re supporting them right up until the finish line. I’d like to thank each and every volunteer who helps make this day possible. Along with IRONMAN® staff, they are the first to start and the last to finish, and work tirelessly to make sure each athlete has the best day possible.

MAYORS’ MESSAGES
Greetings from Whistler the Callaghan Valley and Pemberton. Sport, athleticism and outdoor recreation are core to the values and culture of Whistler, and we are excited and honoured to once again host this event and everyone who is a part of it. Welcome to all athletes, support teams, volunteers and spectators. PHOTO: SUBMITTED
Welcome to Whistler! On behalf of the Resort Municipality of Whistler, I would like to welcome you to the 2014 Subaru IRONMAN® Canada triathlon. This is the second year that Subaru IRONMAN® Canada will take place in the Sea to Sky area, specifically in Whistler,
IRONMAN® has a worldwide reputation for setting the bar in athletic performance and we think the course throughout the dramatic and diverse terrain of the Sea to Sky corridor provides the challenge and quality to match, thanks to extensive work by the organizers and partners involved in staging the event. In 2013, we hosted 2,600
SWIM, BIKE, RUN AND...
IRONMAN® athletes and engaged 3,000 volunteers. It was a truly amazing experience for Whistler to be a part of such an epic sporting event. Our community embraced IRONMAN® and was inspired. This year, we once again look forward to cheering on the athletes as they cross the finish line at Whistler Olympic Plaza. Our volunteers, community and spectators are a big part of this event and are with the athletes throughout the day as they make their way through the race — until the final racers cross the finish line at midnight. The plaza itself is a symbol of sports excellence — it was the site of the medal ceremonies during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and is a fitting finish for IRONMAN® athletes.
For those who are returning, we welcome you back; and for those who are visiting us for the first time, welcome to Whistler! While here, we hope you also have time to experience some of the beauty and unique experiences our resort has to offer — such as Whistler’s spectacular hiking and worldclass mountain biking, as well as our wide variety of spas, restaurants, pubs and shops. Thank you for your interest in Subaru IRONMAN® Canada. We look forward to a wonderful weekend of sport, athleticism and fun. Warmest regards, Nancy Wilhelm-Morden Resort Municipality of Whistler

Pemberton: An important part of Subaru IRONMAN Canada ®
Whistler neighbour to the north worth a visit By CINDY FILIPENKO Subaru IRONMAN® Canada may start and finish in Whistler, but Pemberton is also an important part of the race, hosting the lion’s share of the cycling component of the triathlon. It also offers great vantage points from which to cheer the racers on.

Last year, Tourism Pemberton showcased the village’s spirit with its IRONMAN® cheer station. This year, the organization hopes more community members will develop their own cheer stations along the triathlon’s cycling route.
into town, they were greeted by a “Welcome” sign chalked on the road, “When you’re tired and hurting, and a cheering crowd gathered in front of the Pemberton Visitor Centre. a few kind words, a pat on the Fist-pumping, grinning athletes back and some encouragement waved to the crowd as they whipped around the corner into Pemberton’s makes all the difference,” downtown, clearly invigorated. Every “IRONMAN® is a wonderful, participant was met with a similar wholesome event that highlights our greeting as they made their way back beautiful valley,” says David MacKenzie, president of Tourism through Pemberton and on to the final stretch of the gruelling Pemberton. “And it shows off what a great place Pemberton 180-kilometre ride back to Whistler. is for cycling. There are a lot of terrific places to view the race from and we encourage everyone to get out and take part in “When you’re tired and hurting, a few kind words, a pat on the supporting and cheering on these world-class athletes.” back and some encouragement makes all the difference,” says Kathy Leverton, a Pembertonian who participated in the 1985 Last year, when athletes flew down the hill at One Mile Lake and IRONMAN®.

On July 27, she’ll be supporting athletes for the second year in a row by captaining an aid station, which will be as much about encouragement as handing out refreshments. Excellent places to gather to show your support for the athletes as they ride into Pemberton include in front of the Visitor Centre at the junction of Highway 99 and Portage Road, the Pemberton Community Centre on Portage, or along Prospect Street by the Royal Canadian Legion. But really, anywhere you see people gathering along the route will be fun. With all that cheering, whistling and whooping you’re bound to need to refuel — if not on race day, then the next time you’re back to visit or do your own training. On Portage Road at the highway turnoff into town, you’ll find a number of places to grab food and drink. For your caffeine needs, follow the direction on the sidewalk sign to the Mt. Currie Coffee Co., a locals’ favourite.

STORY
The IRONMAN Foundation: Helping build community ®
Local groups benefit from race through volunteerism By CINDY FILIPENKO Since its inception in 2003, The IRONMAN® Foundation, the philanthropic arm of IRONMAN®, has donated more than $11 million to non-profit organizations around the globe. By providing 25 volunteers to help run an aid station, local community groups can earn $1,000 while taking part in an inspiring event. Last year, 40 organizations in Whistler and Pemberton benefited from foundation grants. This year, there will be one more.
“It felt really festive,” she says. “I think it inspired the athletes to see people having fun helping them.” “We had a great day,” said Leverton. “The weather was beautiful. We had a high-energy place, lots of spectators and music blaring and signs with sayings like ‘Ride’em, cowgirl’ and ‘Go, Cowboy, Go.’” The money Leverton’s station raised was used to help pay for shoes, coats and other basics for kids in need.
IRONMAN® Volunteer Director Donna Savage is excited about the level of interest in this event. “All but seven of last year’s groups are returning this year. Other groups have gotten involved and I think our final number will be 41 non-profit organizations participating,” says Savage. “I think people are excited to help because they know they’re making a difference to the athletes. It’s so inspiring to see people who are committed to fulfilling a major goal like finishing this amazing triathlon.” It takes almost 3,000 volunteer work shifts to make the event run smoothly. Some volunteers work from early morning to midnight as the final runners cross the finish line, while others may choose to take on a single five-hour shift. Jobs range from helping athlete strip out of their wetsuits to handing out refreshments at aid stations from one end of the route to the other. There are hundreds of volunteers. One of them is, Kathy Leverton, a teacher and committed recreational athlete, who returns again this year, leading an aid station in Pemberton. Last year, her station featured more than 30 dedicated volunteers — some joining in spontaneously during the event — handing out water, juice and fruit to the 2,800 riders who zipped through Pemberton on the cycling leg. Leverton was very familiar with the event before signing up to be a volunteer captain, having completed an IRONMAN® in Hawaii in 1985. “I had never really travelled before and suddenly I was in Hawaii for six weeks of training… Crossing the finish line, it was an amazing experience.” With knees that now say “no” to running, Leverton saw volunteering as the perfect way to get involved and help others have an amazing experience. Her station adopted a country theme with the help of some hay bales, volunteers in cowboy hats and a little country music. 16 SUBARU IRONMAN® CANADA • Whistler, B.C. • Official Spectator Guide 2014
PHOTO: DAVE STEERS / FLICKR.COM/DBSTEERS
Another beneficiary of last year’s IRONMAN® Foundation funds was the Whistler Museum. Brad Nichols, collections manager at the Whistler Museum, echoes Leverton’s sentiments when he reflects on last year’s IRONMAN®. “People were very excited to be a part of this event, and many of them are helping us out again. It was definitely worthwhile. It was great how people turned out, it really showed Whistler’s incredible volunteer spirit,” says Nichols. The museum used its IRONMAN® grant to purchase acid-free housing for archival photos to help preserve Whistler’s history. This year’s money may go to restoring 8-mm films donated by the late, renowned Whistler pioneer, Florence Petersen. “In both Whistler and Pemberton, each group used the grants to enhance its community,” says Savage. “And they also had a lot of fun. I expect this year will be the same.”

Athletes will travel south on the Sea to Sky Highway before climbing into the Callaghan Valley, site of the Nordic skiing events during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
After descending back to the highway, athletes pass through Whistler on their way north to Pemberton. An out-and-back section allows athletes breathtakingly beautiful views of glaciated peaks while racing on a completely flat section of road. Revel in the record-breaking ride between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, hovering some 436 metres (1,430 feet) above the valley floor. Wait for a glass-bottom gondola for that extra thrill. This sightseeing adventure is available daily through the summer.

There is no shortage of experiences to keep the whole family entertained during a Whistler summer, so if you’re here before race day, taking some vacation time in town after IRONMAN®, or planning a return visit, here are some can’t-miss suggestions on how to spend your time:
RAINBOW PARK 02 The park where the Subaru IRONMAN® Canada start line sits is worth a second visit. Often called “the jewel in the crown” of Whistler’s park system, this is the spot to perfect your tan while playing volleyball, building sandcastles, going for a dip in Alta Lake, or throwing a stick for your pooch at the off-leash dog beach area. Some of the best views of Whistler and Blackcomb are taken in here.

HIT THE PATIOS 03 Whistler Village is full of great places to dine or enjoy a drink al fresco. Take the time to sit and soak it all. An hour or two watching the comings and goings about town will give you a true sense of the resort’s hustle and bustle, even during the slower summer season. FAMILY ADVENTURE ZONE 04 Hard to imagine that kids can get bored in Whistler with the world’s biggest playground as their backyard. Nonetheless, grab their attention at this mini-amusement park, where there are bouncy castles, mini-golf, pony rides and plenty more running daily at the base of Blackcomb Mountain in the Upper Village.

Chances are you’ll see some of the dozens of black bears that call Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains home in a way that’s safe for both you and the animals.

PRO ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT
Pro profiles: Get to know the contenders Defending champ Wurtele among top triathletes eyeing victory By BRADEN DUPUIS Once again, some of the world’s top triathletes will be among the thousands of competitors in this year’s edition of Subaru IRONMAN® Canada.
Their motivations are varied — from retaining a championship to picking up crucial points — but the goal is consistent in each of their minds: Finish the day on the top of the podium.
Here are some of the top pros who will be gunning for victory in Whistler.

Trevor Wurtele
Bree Wee
While Trevor Wurtele is no stranger to IRONMAN®, this year’s event in Whistler will offer up something relatively new to him: Wurtele heads into the race as defending champion.
Though IRONMAN® veteran Bree Wee hails from Hawaii, she’s spent her fair share of time racing in Canada.
“I’m definitely heading back there to get the win again,” said the B.C. native. “I don’t want to lower my goals or expectations, so I’ll definitely go in there with that big goal in mind.” But if you think there’s added pressure on the 35-year-old being the returning champ, you’d be wrong. “I think it’s more of a confidence boost for me,” Wurtele said. “Knowing that you’ve won it before, and everyone on the start line knows that you’ve won it before, it helps you know that you can do it again.” It also helps that Wurtele has an intimate knowledge of the Whistler course — before last year’s event, he spent a month training on it. “That was more just to get used to the course and see what the course was like,” he said. “Now that I know it, I think I’m probably just going to show up the week of.”
30 SUBARU IRONMAN® CANADA • Whistler, B.C. • Official Spectator Guide 2014
“I’ve done Vancouver, Penticton, Mont Tremblant,” said the 34-year-old. “I’ve been around and about for awhile, so I think I’m familiar with the terrain.” When she gets to Whistler for this year’s event, Wee will have one goal in mind: Qualifying for this year’s IRONMAN® World Championship, which takes place annually in her home state. “Of the 234 pro women they take 35, so I’m just going to go collect as many points as I can at that race.” There’s little room for error for Wee. A few weeks out from Subaru IRONMAN® Canada, she sat right on the cusp in that 35th and final spot. But she’s not letting that weigh on her mind. “IRONMAN® is long, anything can happen,” said the 2012 IRONMAN® Louisville winner. “But if I just stay positive when the things happen that are out of my control, then it should be a good day.”

Matthew Russell
Jackie Arendt
Matthew Russell was on the podium in three different IRONMAN® events in 2012 — including the final Subaru IRONMAN® Canada in Penticton — and those are some results he’d like to see duplicated in 2014.
After a solid year of training, American triathlete Jackie Arendt is looking forward to her first trip to Whistler.
“Training has been great this year,” said Russell, also the runnerup to Wurtele in Whistler in 2013. “I’ve really focused on my swimming since it is my weakest leg.” The 31-year-old already has one podium finish this year, placing second at IRONMAN® Texas. While IRONMAN® is never easy no matter where you’re racing, Whistler offers up some different challenges compared to Texas. “The first thing is temperature,” Russell said. “It’s really hot and humid in Texas and Whistler will be much cooler. The second thing is the bike course. Texas is fairly flat and Whistler has a ton of climbing during the bike segment.”
“We had a very long winter in Wisconsin, but I was able to head south for March and get started on some good volume,” Arendt said. “My body has been holding up well and I am finally getting back to some of the run fitness that I haven’t had in a couple years.” The 29-year-old has been an IRONMAN® champion in the past, winning the event held in Wisconsin last year. Arendt has been busy this year, too, competing in one fulldistance IRONMAN® event and two half IRONMAN®s. She’ll be looking to get as familiar with the Whistler course as possible before the start gun goes off on July 27. “I’m not sure (what to expect),” she said. “I imagine it’s pretty hilly.”
While the hills make for a challenging course, Russell said Whistler holds another challenge unique to other events: the beauty of the venue. “You don’t want to get distracted,” he said. “It’s such a beautiful place!” SUBARU IRONMAN® CANADA • Whistler, B.C. • Official Spectator Guide 2014 31

Keeping people and bears safe at Subaru IRONMAN Canada ®
By SYLVIA DOLSON

Whistler is located in prime black bear habitat, so whether you are participating in IRONMAN®, volunteering or cheering on your favourite competitor, you may encounter a black bear. Seeing a bear can be a memorable experience, but to protect yourself and keep bears wild, it is important to understand some bear facts. Keep in mind that bears are wild animals, and while they may tolerate the presence of humans, they should never be approached or fed. It only takes one food reward for a bear to learn that humans are a source of easy, high-calorie meals, beginning a cycle of conflict that will end with the death of the bear. Dispose of all food waste and packaging in the bear-proof containers provided around town. You can tell how a bear is feeling about your presence by reading their body language. A relaxed bear is one that doesn’t pay much attention to you. They may not have seen you, or you may be far enough away that they do not perceive you as a threat. When a bear stands up on their back legs, they are likely curious and trying to identify you. 32 SUBARU IRONMAN® CANADA • Whistler, B.C. • Official Spectator Guide 2014
Bears will let you know you’ve stressed or disturbed them by displaying any or all of the following behaviour: moving away, climbing a tree, salivating, yawning, skittishness or jumping at sounds or movements. A female bear will often tree her cub(s) when she feels threatened. If you have invaded a bear’s personal space, they will huff (expel air loudly) and clack their teeth. Bears may also slap the ground, lunge toward you or make short charges. What to do: Back away, leave the area and allow the bear their personal space. Call the Conservation Officer Service to help deter the bear from the race course by dialling #7277 on your cell. For more information on vacationing in bear country or living with bears, email us at info@bearsmart.com or visit us online at www.bearsmart.com. Municipal staff given raise of 6.75 per cent Wage increase to roll out over the next four years Quinn Bender quinn@whistlerquestion.com
Municipal staff are set to receive a wage increase of 6.75 per cent over the next four years, the Resort Municipality of Whistler confirmed Friday (Aug. 23). Staff have been without a wage agreement since December of 2011. Chief administrative officer Mike Furey said the raise, retroactive through 2012, was based on wage increases in other municipalities. “This settlement has emerged as a pattern in the Lower Mainland,” Furey said. “We’re very pleased to have this in place, because
it brings stability to that component of our staff relations.” The agreement reached with Whistler staff will see a 1.25 per cent raise for 2012, increasing two per cent by 2015. In dollars, the RMOW will pay out $1.5 million more in wages over the four-year period. Mayor Nancy WilhelmMorden said the wages are comparable to living expenses in Whistler, and in line with what she pays her personal staff at her law firm. “It’s certainly much more reasonable, in my view, than the previous four-year increases. ‘I’M SATISFIED’ P4
