St. Andrew, the first who preached Christianity in Scythia Minor (modern Dobrogea) to the native people of the Dacians (ancestors of the Romanians).

Numele său este de origine greacă ("andreia" însemnând bărbăţie sau valoare) şi pare să fi fost destul de răspândit printre evreii din secolele doi şi trei înainte de Iisus. Sf. apostol Andrei s-a născut în Bethsaida din Galileea şi este fratele lui Sf. Petru (Simon Petru). Amândoi erau pescari şi trăiau în aceeaşi casă la Capernaum în momentul când l-au întâlnit pe Iisus. Din evanghelia lui Ioan aflam că Andrei a fost ucenicul lui Ioan Botezatorul. Andrei recunoaşte deîndată pe Iisus ca Mesia şi îl aduce pe fratele său, Petru, la acesta (Ioan 1.41). Din acel moment amândoi fraţii devenind ucenici ai lui Iisus.
His name is of Greek origin ("Andreia" meaning manhood or value) and appears to have been quite common among Jews from the second or third century before Christ. St. Andrew was born in Bethsaida of Galilee and he is the brother of St. Peter (Simon Petru). Both were fishermen and lived in the same house at Capernaum at the time when they met Jesus. From John's Gospel we learn that Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist. Andrew recognizes Jesus as Messiah at once and brings his brother, Peter, to him (John 1.41). Since then both brothers became disciples of Jesus.
