EXHIBITION

This entire system is documented as models, which in stage 2 of the studio gets built as a full-scale installation in the college corridor for the annual architecture exhibition.

DESIGN DISSERTATION

Mud cracks is a naturally occuring emergence phenomenon. As the land dries up, high stress points form, from which the stress gets released as cracks perpendicular to the points. These perpendicular release lines travel linearlly and laterally creating polygonal cracks.

WORKSHOP PUBLICATION

Studio 3 aims at exploring the Emergence phenomenon that is seen in nature. It starts with a written manifesto that describes Emergence to be a bottom-up system. As each unit performs its function, together they lead to a pattern show-casing emergence.

EXHIBITION

As I walk through the frames, the positive of the preceeding frames morphs into the positive of the next frame. This morphing of elements is shown with the help of pixels making it a physical documentation of how I perceive space. As a next step to this study, the pixel model becomes the reference for designing and proposing an installation in a relevant part of the city.

DESIGN DISSERTATION

'Mapping' is an excercise in getting conscious of ones surrounding and documenting the immeasurable, highly subjective perceptions. The routine journey from home to college gets translated into a walk-through of frames. In each frame, I represent all that is in my focus as positive space, and the surrounding elements as negative space.

DESIGN DISSERTATION

As a part of my intervention, I propose a research and library space of sorts. Here, scholars can live on the premise and continue with their research on the socio-cultural features of Khetwadi. The space has been propsed to be perched on top of existing structures so one has a constant birds eye view of Khetwadi. The internal organization is such that the all the rooms are visually connected with each other and connected with the outside through a glass facade.

WORKSHOP PUBLICATION

In the studio 'Site + X', 'site' referes to Khetwadi, one of the oldest parts of South Mumbai. Khetwadi is characterised by narrow lanes bustling with the traffic of hand carts transporting trade material and scooters that barely oblivious to the traffic rules. These lanes are lined with old wooden buildings and some of them have been restrored with supporting steel columns and beams. An interesting and constant feature of these buildings is that all of them have hardware shops on the ground level and residential homes on the top. The excercise here is to be sensitive to these existing features and propose a architectural intervention that increases the socio-culural value of the place.

FINAL MODEL

The purpose of the 'Extension' is to enhance the significance of David Sassoon Library in that zone by enhancing the laid-back, break-out quality for the members and attracting non-members to come and experience that quality from within. In order to attract non-members, the program is to Display Information on Mumbai Heritage using books, sculptures, paintings and artefacts and provide an informal discussion space with an open cafe. An important part of the design proposal is to incorporate the existing trees and make it an integral part of the design.

STUDIO

EXHIBITION

The library, with its large arch shaped openings allow ample natral light, making the grandeur of the structure more humble. The soft natural light with casual wooden arm chairs gives it an open and laiback quality.

DESIGN DISSERTATION

David Sassoon Library and Reading room lies in a zone of Mumbai with culturally rich structures like the Jehangir art gallery, N.G.M.A., Rhythm House and Elphinstone college in the vicinity; inviting a large number of artists, musicians and students to the area.

NON STANDARD HOUSING

WORKSHOP PUBLICATION

These two main design tools are the basis for my non-standard housing proposal along a given contoured site. That along with design interventions like jogging tracks along the water channel, the water from eries overflowing into pools of individual houses and sensitively designing the micro space forms the essence of the project.

PROFESSIONAL WORK

The Moriyama house by Sanaa in Japan is the chosen case study project. The sense of scale, and strategic openings, along with the seamless flow between the inside and the outside are the major observations about the project. These observations lead to a diagram forming the design tool for the 'Non-standard house'. Parallely, a study of the Ery water system shows how water on a contoured terrain uses the slope to naturally collect water in a network of tanks called eries.

DESIGN DISSERTATION

'Non-Standard Housing' is a project that draws from interesting housing case studies and sustainable systems as a design tool.

NEW PARADIGMS IN COLLECTIVE HOUSING

The project is to consider the repercussions of this significant urban intervention and design a collective housing project, such that the design is sensitive to the requirements of each of these strata's of society. The site study shows that there exists a relation between natural elements and the income group. For instance, built parks and lanes with trees invite MIG and HIG housing vis-a-vis open informal maidaans invite LIG housing. This relation is used to map the Estate Value Diagram of the given site. The massive urban intervention will bring with it immense negative impacts like noise and pollution. The established relations between natural elements and the income groups get adapted to nullify these effects. The result of this process is 4 distinct housing typologies - the Green Wall, the Forest, the Island and the Mountain; with different combinations of LIG, MIG, HIG as per the established relations.

WORKSHOP PUBLICATION

The recently developed suburb of Andheri-Lokhandwala has seen a drastic increase in LIG, MIG, HIG residents. With the up-coming metro line in that region, the poppulation is going to witness a further leap.

PROFESSIONAL WORK

The Collective housing project is about designing for Low Income Group (LIG), Middle Income Group (MIG), High Income Group (HIG) within a existing high density urban scenario while drawing from the existing site conditions.

EXHIBITION

STUDIO

Architecture in the Experience Economy

The study results into a spatial model prototype. Using this spatial model as a design tool, I propose an experiential food bazaar with the philosophy of engaging the senses in totality in order to make it an enriching experience.

WORKSHOP PUBLICATION

The design dissertation is a Research Project on documenting and analysing how the economic model of 'selling an experience' has grown from a model that was simply about 'selling the product', and simultaneously exploring the spatial model and the design model that comes out of it. he design dissertaion is a study aimed at understanding this existing phenomenon in its totality. It is a journey involving nodes like Economic Timeline, Economic Ideas, the Translating Elements, Architectural Typologies, the resultant Typical Spatial Structures and the eventual Design model.

PROFESSIONAL WORK

An 'unforgettable consumer experience', is the current core economic philosophy of all sectors that directly deal with consumers. This refers to an Economic model where the idea is to choreograph and sell an engaging 'experience of buying'. This Consumer Experience is created using simple elements like playing music in the background, perfuming the air or simply investing in a new interactive product display, making the act of buying highly experiential. Here the consumers interact with the product by first interacting with the surrounding space, thus referring to the spatial implication of the Economic model.

FRINGE CONDITION PROCESS DIAGRAMS AND FINAL MODEL

EXHIBITION

This short 1-week long workshop is about exploring and identifying the Fringe conditions in Mumabi. The coastal strip with mangroves along the Bandra Carter road promenade is identified as an interesting coastal fringe. The situation here is that inspite of inviting elements like mangroves and the water coast, it is a rigid fringe that does not allow people to explore and experience those spaces in close proximity. As a solution to the problem, a deployable module is created such that it is flexible in nature, thus allowing people to come and experience it their way, keeping with the spirit of people in Bandra.

WORKSHOP PUBLICATION

An introduction to the 'Process-oriented architecture', this foundation workshop is a workshop with the aim of creating a simple spanning structure, by exploring and identifying the properties of the material given to each group. The material given is a wire. It's inherent property allows it to be easily folded, bent, twisted and notched in loops. Using these properties, a stable module is created. The notching operation gets used to multiply the module into a non-sagging spanning structure.

WORKSHOP PUBLICATION

Bandra is located in the suburban part of Mumbai. Being close to the sea, it was one of the first places to be inhabited by the koli (fishing) community of Mumbai. As a result, Bandra is dotted with localities with heritage houses connected with extremely narrow streets and interesting gathering pockets. Due to gentrification, a lot of these localities are under the treat of being lost completely. As an excercise to revive this heritage precinct, we propose cycling tracks throughout one such locality. The tracks are classified as the Heritage tracks, Artists track, Farmer's track, Food track and the Play track; all of this keeping in sync with the 'Bandra Culture'. The study terminates with a book that is manual of sorts, providing guidelines of making changes to such localities. This includes codes for adding lighting fixtures, pavement material, signages, color palette, and also the kind of bench and green fixtures that can be added.

IMPRESSIONS is a book conceived and made by a group of seven of us. The idea is to document the impressions unique to each one of us from the study tour to Sri Lanka. What is interesting about this publication is that each page is diffrent in its content and representation. This was done to document and show the different perspectives of looking at a place.
