WELCOME T’NORTH!

CONTENTS
Nicholas Dunn-McAfee sends a typical Yorkshire welcome to all Freshers
“I
t’s grim up North,” your crack-voiced grandmother said when you said you were accepted to York. “Take a coat” said you mum. “Take four” said your dad, “it rains daily up there”. “Don’t come back at Christmas having put on two stone from living on chips, gravy and porkpies!” your sister calls after you as you leave home properly for the first time.
3 Welcome to the North 4-5 Finding your way around
But you might be bringing a lot more baggage when you move up here than you thought: if when you hear “Northerners” you think “miners”, and when you hear “Grimsby” your thoughts predicate on the first syllable, you need to re-think your views.
6 Pimp your room
There’s a cultural and social vibrancy to the North which gets lost and waylaid with silly little assumptions. The world’s second most performed playwright, Sir Alan Ayckbourn, premiers all his new work only 45 minutes away at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre. York has over 300 pubs for the local experience, or you can sup up cocktails at our famous Evil Eye Bar. If shopping is more your forte, York’s abundance of vintage shops mixed with high-street favourites and designer boutiques should keep you satisfied, with Leeds only a stone’s throw away if you’ve exhausted York and several student loan installments.
7 Solved: Freshers Flu
In the event you missed it, Yorkshire would have finished twelfth on the Olympics 2012 medal table. I’m not calling for a succession movement, but nothing really compares to Yorkshire people. In some cases “time standing still” has actually served God’s own county pretty well – where else in the world is it the norm to call a stranger “love”, “duck” or “deary”? Our taxi drivers aren’t on a murderous rampage against pedestrians and cyclists. Our shopkeepers are actually willing to get to know their customers and the term “local business” means a lot here. It’s hard to not be inspired when you live on the cusp of the Lake District, scenery so magnificent that William Wordsworth declared it: “A sort of national property in which every man has a right and interest who has an eye to perceive and a heart to enjoy”.
9-11 Interview: Delilah 12-13 Make your own takeaway 15 Freshers Checklist
And that’s maybe the beauty of the North: a tight-knit but welcoming community. Enjoy it while it lasts – you’ll miss it when you go home for Christmas. This guide should provide you with everything you need until then. Enclosed within these pages is everything you’ll need to know about York, including tokens for free drinks, cinema tickets, and an interview with the singer-songwriter Delilah. Vision hope you have a great first few weeks and we look forward to seeing you all at Freshers Fair on Saturday Week 1!

1) Sleep is hugely important. Rest works wonders so make sure every night doesn’t involve stumbling in at four in the morning. 2) Eat healthily. Takeaway food may seem like a convenient solution to your cooking woes but it won’t do you any good. Make sure you take vitamin supplements to ward off illness (seriously, I’m obsessed). 3) Wrap up warm. While I know I am sounding increasingly like your mother, this is a basic essential. York is bloody freezing most of the time, especially at night when you are wearing less and drinking more! 4) Don’t bother going to the medical centre unless you are really incapacitated. They have enough to deal with and will probably tell you to self-medicate if you just have a sniffle. 5) Last of all, wait it out. It won’t last forever and you will soon be free to enjoy your first term in all its glory, uninhibited by a snotty nose and croaky voice.

aving recently turned 22 years old, with a top 20 single in the bag, and top 5 album under her belt, Delilah is in an enviable position. After all, not many her age can boast supporting the likes of Prince and Chase & Status. But less than three months after launching her debut album, From The Roots Up, Delilah sits as an artist with a unique, recognisable sound and with the UK music scene at her feet. Having been signed by Atlantic Records at the tender age of 18, it could be expected that such a young artist would have her head in the clouds, with mainstream radio success clouding any degree of humility – but this is not the case.
YORK VISION field later this month. Described by some as the missing link between The XX and Sade, and praised by Chase & Status, who chose her to feature on their album due to her “uniquely British” sound, Delilah lists a wide range of figures who have been influential towards her musical style: “I’ve grown up listening to a lot of soul and trip-hop and drum & bass and R&B and bands like Massive Attack or Sade and things like that have influenced how I write. “I definitely have a different approach to a general pop act towards sound and production, with the use of sub-bass and a dark melody, so I think that’s maybe why I sound so different, because I do like lis-
“I definitely have a different appraoch to a general pop act” Paloma Ayana Stoecker, as she’s not so well known, speaks as an old head on young shoulders, humbled by the accolades bestowed on her by critics reviewing her album and her emerging live show. Her work has been so well received that even Chaka Khan, who was sampled in the UK Number 5 hit ‘Go’ (yes, you also heard it in that Liberty X track almost a decade ago) labelled her work as “genius.” High praise indeed, from the man behind the original record. Delilah found the time to talk to Vision during the hectic recording process for her forthcoming second album and ahead of her second headline tour of the calendar year which takes in local spots including Newcastle’s Digital and Plug in Shef-
tening to a hell of a lot of different genres, and when I came to making a record I had a lot of input into producing it, so it sounds a lot like my influences, and as such, me!” Even listening to Delilah over the past year, the works of those who inspired her is clearly demonstrated in her more distinctive and personal sound. In 2010 and 2011 she toured with Drum & Bass giants Chase & Status. “I spent two years listening to Drum & Bass music every night so that definitely influenced me in some way or form, but not in the way that anyone thought it would. Everyone thought I would be the next Katy B. The music definitely influenced me but it far from
YORK VISION made me want to become a dubstep artist.” In fact, it seems that the influence sent her sound quite the opposite way - with comparisons drawn by some with Canadian singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette. Her considered look back upon the industry that has taken her from being an unsigned 18-year-old to a UK top five album chart artist focuses on that unique side of her work: “I’ve been signed for four years, it’s quite a long time in the major mainstream world to be signed before you release a record. I mean, I was signed off the back of nothing, whereas nowadays people always want to see something before they sign anyone.”

“I would say practice writing – writing is really important. I know a lot people think there are ways of doing it without writing your own music but in fifty years’ time none of these artists are going to relevant.”
In terms of what’s to come for Delilah: “I’m in the studio as we speak, doing a few interviews and features at the minute, we’re working on the second album already – I think this next record is gonna be a bit different to the first one. [From The Roots Up] was a bit introspective and a little bit kind of, selfindulgent and this one’s going to have a bit more energy to it.
“I used to think I needed to be the next Beyonce”
With Delilah having broken into the industry in such a way, she finds it very important to advise other young and talented artists on how to make it.
“I used to think I needed to be the next Beyonce, or whoever, but I don’t think that’s what anyone’s looking for – they’re looking for someone new.”
Her down-to-earth nature and her non-stop attitude to her work is further evidenced by her constant coughing throughout the interview:

There’s no hiding the fact that take-aways are a staple of most students’ diets – but they don’t have to be!
