DREAM COMING TRUE
It takes courage to let go of the familiar and embrace the new.
Š Vinod Khapekar
Nagpur The Second Capital of Maharashtra The largest city in Central India and onetime capital of the 'Central Provinces and Berar', Nagpur is populated by nearly 35 lakh people today, across a sprawling 3,576 sqkm. Host to the zero mile marker of the country, it is the geographical center of India. It is also the center of international aviation routes, the city where two major national highways meet amongst others, the place 'Where India Crosses', and the station where the northsouth and the east-west rail lines of India intersect. It is also known as the 'Orange City' for its significance in the Orange trade, and as the 'Tiger Capital' of India for its proximity as a connecting point to some of the largest tiger reserves in the country. Historically, Nagpur has been a significant political center of the region, but over the years, it has also developed into a commercial & business hub. Its strategic geographical location, multilingual and cosmopolitan culture, tremendous growth potential, and investment-friendly economic policies makes it a lucrative destination to be in. It is also the 20th cleanest city in the country. For a city of such promise, developing infrastructure is paramount; of which public transport plays the most significant role. Does the Nagpur transportation infrastructure provide effective mobility and freedom of travel to its citizens?

Is Nagpur Travelling Safe?
Low Share of Bus Transport 10% SHARE OF PASSENGER TRIPS using bus transport*
Excessive reliance on private vehicles for transportation has led to congestion, pollution, travel inconvenience, and lack of safety. In the last 80 months, 1,821 deaths have occurred on Nagpur city roads. The fatality rate of 10 persons per lakh of population is of great concern for any city transport system. There is a need for a safe and sustainable public transport system, one that can meet the mobility and accessibility needs of all. Nagpur Metro is a response to this call.

With Nagpur Metro, the citizens of Nagpur can now expect a mass rapid transportation system which will be safe, world class, user friendly, comfortable, energy efficient, environment friendly, and easily accessible. The metro will transform the city and the lives of its citizens.
This is the change that the people of Nagpur deserve. And, this is the change they will soon get. Life will change, and how!
ENHANCED MOBILITY & ACCESSIBILITY
I look forward to travelling anywhere, on time and with dignity. No longer will our choices for living, working, health care or even recreation, be limited. We can move within the city with safety and comfort.
Š Dhananjay Ruikar & Pankaj Dawande
Girish, clerical assistant
Nagpur Metro Rail Project will encompass areas with limited connectivity with the aim of enhancing mobility. The entire network will be divided into 2 alignments or corridors spread across a total length of 38.21km, 36 stations and 2 depots. Nagpur City will be connected like never before.
REDUCED TRAVEL COST
I will be able to save a lot of money every month, thanks to the Metro. This will be the cheapest way to travel from my home to Hingna, where I work. Maybe I'll start rebuilding my house! Vijay, industrial worker at Hingna
Š Dhananjay Ruikar & Pankaj Dawande
Based on a detailed economic analysis, it is estimated that metro passengers can save 90% of annual time, fuel, and operating costs over their road based modes of travelling. The metro fare range is expected to be in the 15-41 INR range, for distances between 2 and 21 km correspondingly. This will also enable citizens to commute to locations they earlier opted out of owing to high travel costs. The Metro will prove to be even cheaper than para-transit (auto) which occupies 11% of the total trip share.
REDUCED TRAVEL TIME
I have to travel nearly 20 km for work. Most of my day is spent in transit, leaving me with very little family-time.
I will be able to spend more time with my family. Amruta, manager with a leading bank
By circumventing traffic jams, Nagpur Metro Rail is expected to reduce travel time by around 50% as compared to road-based modes of transport.
TRAVEL SAFETY
My wife needn't worry about our safety anymore. She gets anxious when I travel by scooter. Ashok, shop owner from Itwari
Many areas of the city have become accident prone. Nagpur is seeing high road congestion coupled with the high percentage of two-wheelers (28%) amongst all motorized transport in the city. The two-wheeler ownership is at a staggering 84% of the total owned vehicles. Most road accidents involve two-wheelers. The metro will convince people to move over to public transport.
ENHANCED TRAVEL COMFORT WIFI ON BOARD
This awkward attire will be history. I will finally travel with comfort and convenience. I'll even be able to work intransit, thanks to on-board Wifi internet access! Natasha & friends, college students
Š Dhananjay Ruikar & Pankaj Dawande
The metro will be free from the hassle of congested roads, air pollution, heat, and direct sunlight. Commuters will no longer have to take special measures to protect themselves from the elements. Travel comfort will become a standard. For convenience, Nagpur Metro is also planning to install a WIFI facility for internet access within the metro train for commuters.
UNIVERSAL ACCESS
I will have the freedom to hold a regular job! And I will not need anyone to take me there. Adil, freelance copy-writer
Nagpur Metro will give prime importance to providing accessibility to persons with disabilities, people with temporary mobility problems, people traveling with children, and the elderly. Multiple sources such as IRC codes, building bye laws, and national building codes have been referred to for ensuring an exhaustive range of facilities are incorporated into the designs to ease the commuting needs of disabled people. Features like reversible handicapped gates at stations, lifts on either side of the platforms, wheelchair facilities and accessible coaches, designated seats for the elderly and the disabled, training for staff, audio systems for the visually impaired, etc., will be a part of the design, amongst many others.
FIRST & LAST MILE CONNECTIVITY UNIVERSAL ACCESS
Now we can visit the bank whenever we want to. After Nagpur Metro commences, we will not have to be dependent on anyone to drop us somewhere. Also the metro with its universal accessibility features will be easy to manouevre for us seniors. Rashmi & Pravin, retired couple Š Dhananjay Ruikar & Pankaj Dawande
To provide first & last mile connectivity, a robust feeder system is being developed. This will include shuttle buses, battery operated vehicles, pedestrian facilities & bicycle sharing schemes among others. There will be 19 feeder routes covering all stations - a total distance of around 160 km. With heightened accessibility and comfortable travel at affordable rates, Nagpur Metro will offer greater freedom of intra-city travel to all types of consumers.
GREEN INITIATIVES
'm reminded of Buckminster Fuller's quote, that pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting. As an environmentalist, I am proud of Nagpur Metro for integrating responsibility into infrastructure development.
Nagpur Metro will be a torch bearer for green initiatives. Kirit, environmentalist
Apart from a reduction of city level pollution, Nagpur Metro has actively adopted many 'green' initiatives. It will be the first metro project to have used solar energy at the inception stage itself. All stations will have rooftop solar installations and 65% of the total power will come from solar energy. This will also protect the system from increasing power tariffs. Most of the project related buildings will be 'green' buildings aiming for IGBC certification. A battery operated car charged by solar power has been launched, a fleet of which will be a part of the feeder service. Water harvesting and recycling measures will also be taken, aside from waste water treatment. It is expected that commuters will switch to the metro for their travels, thereby reducing pollution levels and gaining carbon credits in a manner similar to the Delhi Metro.
TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT (TOD)
Our parking struggles will become history. With both residential and commercial developments along the corridor, we can have seamless movement from home to office! Tanya & Jatin, young working couple
In a first for India, the Nagpur Metro is going to use the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) method of generating revenue. Under TOD, the Floor Area Ratio (FAR) of buildings along the metro corridor (within 500 meters) would be higher. Further, terminal stations on both alignments will have residential properties developed to help generate additional revenue.
EMPLOYMENT GENERATION
I can send my children back to school. The Nagpur Metro project has given me a well-paid job for some time now, ever since the construction has started. Thanks to this, I am able to support my family and even take care of many unfinished duties which required some money to come my way. Paras, construction worker
As expected of a large-scale project, Nagpur Metro will throw open a plethora of jobs. Around 1700 jobs are estimated to be created in the operation and maintenance department of the Nagpur Metro Project.
LEISURE OPTIONS
Proposed Views for Ambazari Lake Complex
My mother says that after the metro is built, we can have a family day out every Sunday at Ambazari Lake or at Zero Mile.
Please start soon Nagpur Metro!
Chhavi, primary school student
Today, apart from going to the movies and shopping, there aren't very many family entertainment options available in the city. The NMRCL aims to give the city the true holistic metropolitan experience it deserves, in addition to ensuring smooth commuting. One such example is that of Ambazari Station, where a 1 km glass walled walkway at a height of 15 meters will be made, as a viewing deck for the lake and its surroundings. It will also be commercially developed, which will transform it into an entertainment & leisure spot.
PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT
I will be able to grow my practice without leaving city limits. The metro will create commercial space within the city, where until a few years ago, there was hope for none. Ajay, legal consultant with an office at Sitabuldi
Š Dhananjay Ruikar & Pankaj Dawande
Nagpur Metro plans to develop Sitaburdi Interchange Station in 2018, which along with the adjacent Zero Mile Station, will result in the availability of 12,70,000 sqft of prime built up area in the heart of the city. This will revitalise the central business district and will be known as The Nagpur City Center (TNCC). This area will host shops, restaurants, offices, hotels, sky gardens and viewing galleries, making it a lucrative option for businesses looking for areas with commercial activity.
COST CONTROL
I'm most impressed by the cost cutting measures taken up by Nagpur Metro. It shows their commitment to responsible infrastructure development. Abhijit, chartered accountant
Various measures have been taken in order to reduce costs incurred, including construction, operation, and maintenance costs. For example, underground sections of the metro line have been avoided completely as they are more cost intensive than grade and elevated sections. Parapets are to be built along the viaduct to save separate casting costs. These initiatives have brought down the cost of the project substantially.
TIME OVERRUN CHECK

This won’t last long. The upcoming metro construction has slowed my daily travel. But I’ve heard Nagpur Metro is taking necessary steps to drastically limit the construction time. Daily commuters along the under construction metro corridor
An advanced information modeling tool called 5D BIM is being used for maximum control over costs, quality, and time lines. Further, Nagpur Metro has adopted a segmented construction system, wherein many structures are manufactured off-site simultaneously, while on-site construction continues. Adhering to the quick time lines for construction is of utmost importance to Nagpur Metro so that the city doesn't have to adjust to hindrances posed by construction activities for long.

I never thought I’ll live to see my city transformed. I could never imagine having the metro in my own Nagpur. Also, I’ve heard the metro stations will look like nothing we’ve seen in the city before. Hussain, retired government worker
"Those who look for the laws of nature as a support for their new works collaborate with the creator." - Antonio Gaudi Indeed, Nagpur Metro station designs will be iconic as well as functionally efficient and low energy consuming. The stations will be constructed using ecologically friendly materials and will have IGBC certification. Several of these stations are being designed by renowned and award winning architecture firm Enia Architects in consortium with Mahendra Raj Consultants and Worxpace CPL.
HERITAGE WALK
There’s more to Nagpur than oranges and tigers. As an architect, I am glad somebody is finally paying attention to the rich heritage of the city. Vilas, architect
There will be a carefully planned 'Heritage Walk’ in the central part of Nagpur to showcase the cultural and archeological history of the city. This 400 m stretch will encompass the Sitabuldi Fort, Zero Mile Stone, Shahid Smarak, Gowari Memorial, and Old British Resident Lodge. Besides, a special museum shall display the significance of monuments within this zone.
PUBLIC PARTICIPATION
I probably know as much about the project as the NMRCL team! The Samvaad sessions are a commendable initiative. Suresh, businessman
NMRCL hosts 'Samvaad' sessions with various stakeholders periodically. This is an initiative towards encouraging the public to participate in direct discussions and knowing more about the project at different stages. These sessions are also being conducted through radio channels, wherein people are made to understand the intricacies of the metro project, and are invited to voice their opinions. NMRCL's social media initiatives have also been very successful, with the Nagpur Metro Facebook page receiving over 2.2 lakh likes within 8 months!
The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new. Socrates The Metro works wouldn't have come so far without the support and willingness of each and every citizen of the city. They have shown immense faith and patience in the project, in light of a common good. The metro salutes their spirit and courage. Nagpur Metro pledges to make every possible effort towards enriching the collective future of the city.
