Conservation Areas
2
National parks and other protected areas are intended to protect vulnerable and endangered habitats of national and regional value. The area around the Lyngenfjord features several landscape protection areas and nature reserves that are worth visiting. By far the largest of these protected areas is the Lyngsalpan Landscape Protection Area / Ittugáissáid suodjemeahcci. The majestic Lyngen Alps are renowned for the sharply-pointed peaks surrounded by glaciers of eternal ice, wild and narrow valleys and landscapes that plunge from alpine mountains straight into the sea. This area is protected because it is of great natural science value as glaciological and quaternary geological reference area. The Lyngen Alps are composed mostly of gabbro. This is a hard and resistant type of rock and is responsible for the alpine-like nature of the mountains. There are more than 50 peaks higher than 1300 meters. The mountain area contains round 140 glaciers, which makes it ideal for studying how glaciers have helped to shape the landscape as it appears today.

You can roam freely on foot in the conservation area. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of some of the area’s various birds of prey. Take this into consideration:

All plant and animal life is protected. You may however pick berries and mushrooms. Hunting and fishing is also permitted with the reference to regulations. Behave carefully so that you neither do any harm to nature or cultural values, nor disturb wildlife. Remove traces of your camping site and any litter. Carry out what you carry in. You are welcome to make your own campfire in areas where there is no risk of a fire hazard. There are grazing animals in the area in the summer time. Close gates and keep your dog on a leash.
