RISING TO THE OCCASION
The Abu Dhabi Convention and Exhibition Bureau is proud to promote the emirate as a leading global destination for business events to international audiences
The past few decades have witnessed Abu Dhabi transform into a global travel destination. Its ascent to the top has resulted in an increased influx of visitors, who come to the UAE capital's glistening shores in search of new opportunities and experiences.
On the tourism front, the emirate has never failed to deliver on its promise of unforgettable adventures. The credit for this goes to the capital's record-breaking attractions and landmarks that appeal to residents and visitors alike. But with its sights
In March 2013, the Abu Dhabi Convention and Exhibition Bureau (ADCEB) was established in the capital with an aim to cement the emirate's status as a leading global destination for meetings and events. Since its inception, Abu Dhabi has enjoyed a great deal of success, profitably scaling its proposition for business events.
ÒThe availability of such a strong portfolio of entertainment options in Abu Dhabi makes the destination a versatile MICE hubÓ
A VALUE PROPOSITION
Through its endeavours, ADCEB has positioned the city as the premier choice for planners, leveraging its strategic location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.
Over the past decade, Abu Dhabi has rapidly developed its offering, making it a well-reputed MICE destination. It features a wide variety of impressive venues, suitable for different types of events, with the award-winning Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) proudly leading the way," says Mubarak Al Shamisi, Director of ADCEB.
Aiding the bureau 's efforts in strengthening its MICE proposition is the UAE capital s world-class infrastructure and amenities, array of accommodation options, reliable public transporation and advanced event management technology.
"
All of these are critical factors considered by MICE professionals when choosing a destination in which to host an event," says Al Shamisi. "Moreover, the availability of such a strong portfolio of entertainment options in Abu Dhabi makes the destination a versatile MICE hub. The year-round calendar of events, covering everything, from music and art to sports, also highlights the emirate's remarkable capability to host events of various genres.
"Of course, there is also our notable Arabian hospitality, which is one of the key aspects of the destination. It all comes together as a bespoke, unparalleled experience, which intertwines business and leisure, something we've found corporate travellers seek out when shortlisting an event location," he adds.
SUCCESS STORY
In the last decade, Abu Dhabi has successfully hosted numerous globally significant conferences and large-scale exhibitions, resulting in a staggering rise in the number of events held in the capital. In 2019 alone, more than 13,000 events were licensed in the city with an estimated total of 23,700 speakers and 1,300 entertainers involved. Giving the emirate's MICE facilities a considerable boost, ADNEC, which hosts more than 327 events and 1.6 million visitors annually, raised the curtain on a new event space last year. Built specifically for meetings and conferences with a difference, The Hive boasts 865 square metres of space, comprising an 80-seat auditorium called The Collaboratorium, a versatile space named The Lab and three meeting rooms.
The year 2019 also proved lucrative for unconventional event spaces, with Louvre Abu Dhabi, Manarat Al Saadiyat and Qasr Al Watan leading the charge.
Proving that the bureau 's hard work is clearly paying dividends, Abu Dhabi was named the Middle East 's Leading Business Destination' at the 2019 World Travel Awards. "It 's a testament to our efforts and an accolade that can be attributed to the comprehensive array of unique offerings available in the city," he explains.
BATTLING A CRISIS
Riding this wave of success, ADCEB intended to follow its 2019 achievements by introducing new initiatives at the dawn of the new decade. The year 2020, however, proved tumultuous, with the COVID-19 pandemic denting the efforts of not only the MICE sector but also of other industries.
In spite of the unfavourable circumstances, ADCEB rose to the challenge, pivoting its operations accordingly in order to reopen the emirate to international travellers and develop programmes and guidelines in response to the ever-evolving requirements of the MICE sector.
Al Shamisi explains that, among other immediate priorities, ADCEB worked tirelessly to enable the seamless organisation of virtual and hybrid events without compromising the health and safety of the local community and international visitors.
"Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, we developed and launched various campaigns to engage with visitors in the past few months. In the face of adversity, our team helped increase awareness about Abu Dhabi as an ideal destination for business tourism.
"One of our most successful projects during the pandemic was the #StayCurious campaign. With more time spent online than ever before, we felt it was necessary to develop a solution
ADNEC
to keep the community informed with the latest happenings in order to stay engaged with the destination.
"
Stay Connected, one of the pillars under the initiative, was dedicated to MICE professionals, event organisers and planners, providing information on courses to upskill in various areas. It also served as a platform to share industry insights, helping professionals navigate the disruptions and challenges posed by COVID-19."
In the midst of a global health crisis, Abu Dhabi also managed to safely keep its events scene alive. " Take a look at the UFC Fight Island as an example. The capital was able to deliver a significant event in spite of the pandemic. The emirate created a safe zone with stringent guidelines in place to ensure everyone's safety, all while organising and delivering an event of such magnitude in terms of requirements and popularity. Its success helped us prove our ability to host more events on a similar scale and beyond."
NEW OPPORTUNITIES
Clearly, the emirate shows no signs of slowing down. Instead, the everchanging nature of the crisis has presented an opportunity for various departments, local partners and stakeholders within Abu Dhabi to work together to combat the present adversity and create favourable economic conditions for everyone in a post-COVID future.
"
A few months into the pandemic, we launched the Rediscover Abu Dhabi campaign, which was aimed at encouraging domestic audiences to experience some of the emirate's most exciting offers and activities. The campaign was announced shortly after implementing a set of stringent guidelines as part of DCT Abu Dhabi 's Go Safe Certification, with a mission to standardise safety levels across all tourism and retail establishments in the emirate. By addressing concerns presented by residents and visitors as a result of the pandemic, we were able to uplift the confidence of the community and enliven the tourism sector," he explains.
"
We are also developing new initiatives that combine the cultural fabric of Abu Dhabi with the events sector. As a result, we have launched exclusive cultural programmes for groups, providing a unique opportunity to delve into the heritage of Abu Dhabi and experience first-hand some of the most authentic Emirati traditions as part of their business trip."
looking for new and unconventional ways to expand our offering to attract more events and corporate groups. Initiatives, such as ADCEB s Advantage Abu Dhabi programme, unveiled additional areas of support to encourage the launch and scalability of business events."
These efforts are only bolstered when international organisations continue to use Abu Dhabi as their base in the Middle East. Today, the emirate is home to multinational corporations belonging to an array of industries, such as oil and gas, energy, financial services, innovation, healthcare, as well as arts and culture.
This new initiative aligns with ADCEB's commitment to give business visitors the opportunity to learn more about the local culture in new and exciting ways, resulting in a memorable experience where business and leisure integrate effortlessly.
ADCEB has also partnered with a number of stakeholders across the emirate to offer enticing business and leisure packages to groups.
"Our recent collaboration with Louvre Abu Dhabi has given planners the exclusive opportunity to host their event at the emirate's most iconic museum. Organisers can now
commission Emirati artists for special live performances or offer creative workshops to participate in as a group," explains Shamisi.
FUTURE FOCUS
Initiatives such as these have helped the emirate find firm footing in an incredibly competitive market. Yet, the bureau is not resting on its laurels and is constantly employing fresh initiatives and focusing on new sectors within the events industry.
"
At the heart of ADCEB's efforts is the mission to enhance the destination's profile. We are constantly
" The progression of key industries and the emergence of new trade networks has helped attract more events to the city and uplift Abu Dhabi 's profile within the global business community.
" The UAE is leading the way for the events sector in the region and beyond as it aims to become a hub for knowledge and innovation in this part of the world. Our goal for the coming years is to further expand our scope and strengthen our proposition as an emerging global business destination.
" We also seek to develop a globally competitive and future-ready MICE industry to scale new heights and deliver memorable experiences to our delegates, event organisers and planners," he concludes.
ÒOur goal is to expand our scope and strengthen our proposition as a business destinationÓ
Based on the 2019 report by the Union of International Associations (UIA), Abu Dhabi ranked 22nd worldwide and sixth in Asia in terms of destinations with the highest number of events. This also positioned the emirate as the destination with the highest number of events in the MENA region during the year.
Abu Dhabi also climbed 41 places in rankings reported by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), which considers the total number of association conventions held in a destination along with the total number of delegates in attendance. MOMENTS IN TIME
From a tiny fishing village to a global hub for business and leisure, Abu Dhabi's transformation story is truly remarkable
Legend has it, that in the late 1700s, Bedouin hunters wandering through the desert in search of food, followed an antelope for miles across the dunes. The young creature an Arabian sand gazelle led the tribe to a source of fresh water.
Having discovered a valuable resource, the nomads settled on the island of Abu Dhabi.
To mark the founding of a new settlement, the tribe constructed a watchtower near the well, which stands tall even today as the oldest building in Abu Dhabi the historic Qasr Al Hosn. The surrounding quarters served as the home
of the ruling family for almost two centuries and witnessed the remarkable rise of Abu Dhabi, from a humble pearl farming and fishing village to a mega player in the global oil industry and now, a prime travel destination.
While much of the city dates back to the 18th century, its roots go far deeper, although very little is known about life in Abu Dhabi before the 1700s. The earliest evidence of civilisation in the region goes back to 6000 BCE, with significant archaeological finds suggesting that nomadic communities have inhabited the area since the Neolithic Age.

A thriving metropolis that champions all things futuristic, modern Abu Dhabi is a stark contrast to its historic past. Decades ago, caravans traversing the stretch of sands native to this region retreated to the sleepy desert outpost for the night before resuming their arduous journey onwards.
In the late 1700s, nomads from the
Bani Yas tribe finally settled in Abu Dhabi and ever since, the emirate has been continuously inhabited. Despite its meteoric rise over the centuries, the city has not lost touch with its heritage. In fact, preserving its culture has remained a priority.
Thanks to the conservation of ancient landmarks and the addition of new venues, Abu Dhabi has gained a reputation as a centre for culture. Stories about the past are regaled with much fervour even today. Its traditions continue to be celebrated in various art forms. The city's museums stand testimony to the centuries of history unearthed from the sands. And amidst the modern structures adorning the skyline, Abu Dhabi's cultural icons proudly dot the landscape.
From watchtowers and forts to museums and art galleries, these remarkable landmarks provide a glimpse into the past of the everevolving emirate.

The Abu Dhabi Convention and Exhibition Bureau (ADCEB) was established in March 2013 with a mission to foster the development and promotion of business events in the UAE capital. At the heart of its efforts is the vision to champion the emirate as a dynamic global destination for events. Among other key objectives, ADCEB offers a variety of support services to event organisers, right from the bid stage through to the live event.
SITE INSPECTION SUPPORT
The best way to determine if Abu Dhabi meets planners' requirements is to experience the emirate first-hand. A visit allows planners to get a sense of Abu Dhabi's cultural proposition and logistical infrastructure. During this visit, ADCEB helps planners secure meetings with local partners, opinion leaders and event specialists.
ORGANISATIONAL SUPPORT
Working with ADCEB gives planners access to an extensive list of professional conference organisers who can assist with events of all sizes and budgets. A selection of the best venues and hotels is also presented to planners. Other organisational requirements, including block-booking hotel rooms at competitive prices and shortlisting hospitality partners, are also taken into account.
ADDED ADVANTAGE
Make your next event stand out with support from the Advantage Abu Dhabi programme
Abu Dhabi hosts more than 800 international events every year, drawing in audiences from around the world. Major spectacles, such as the Formula 1TM Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to the Abu Dhabi Classics concert series, have taken place in the emirate in the last decade alone.
In a bid to build on this success, The Department of Culture and TourismAbu Dhabi is incentivising international, regional and local companies through a new grant programme titled Advantage Abu Dhabi.
TAKING BUSINESS EVENTS TO THE NEXT LEVEL
FUTURE FOCUS
A ONE-STOP SOLUTION FOR PLANNERS
BID SUPPORT
In the pre-planning stage, ADCEB will assist with any research conducted by event planners to determine the viability of hosting an event in Abu Dhabi. After developing strategies and objectives for the event, the team works with planners to lobby the conference organising committee and produce bespoke documents to enhance the bid.
MARKETING SUPPORT
ADCEB supports organisers with innovative, bespoke promotional material to help attract delegates in large numbers. The bureau's assistance also extends to designing public relations campaigns to market the event to new and existing audiences.
OFFICIAL AIRLINE SUPPORT
As the national airline of the UAE, Etihad Airways extends its support to events in the UAE capital as the Official Airline Partner. The airline boasts a fleet of more than 120 aircraft and is a strategic partner of the emirate of Abu Dhabi and ADCEB.
Advantage Abu Dhabi was designed to offer support to international event organisers. The programme serves as a catalyst for innovation in the business events industry. It helps strengthen links between event organisers and local suppliers, thereby stimulating business at home and also enhancing the experience for event attendees. It all comes together to further enhance Abu Dhabi's event calendar and its proposition as a world-class destination for business events.
To help the industry reach its maximum potential, the Abu Dhabi Convention and Exhibition Bureau reviews applications to determine which events qualify for the Advantage Abu Dhabi programme.
In order to access this invaluable support, a number of factors are taken into consideration. To qualify, an event
Advantage Abu Dhabi aims to support business events that align with the core pillars of the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. A longterm plan for the transformation of the emirate's economy outlined
must align with the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. It should make a positive contribution to the economic, social and cultural landscape of the UAE capital.
The event's objectives and sustainability will be reviewed by the committee, while its historical records, with regards to its international presence and the networking opportunities it has offered, will also be assessed.

by the government of Abu Dhabi, this vision aims to reduce reliance on the country's oil sector as a source of economic activity over time and channel a greater focus on knowledge-based industries in the future.
