REASONS TO MEET IN ANCHORAGE
1.
“I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO GO THERE” Let’s face it: when Alaska is mentioned, most people have it on their “bucket list.” Meeting in Anchorage can boost interest in the event and increase the number of participants; Alaska is a place attendees already want to visit. Give them the chance to make lifetime dreams a reality: flying over and landing on a glacier, riding the runners of a dog sled, golfing under the midnight sun or catching a king salmon.
2.
PLENTY OF SPACE Alaska has about one square mile of land per resident, and when it comes to meeting spaces you’ll find plenty of room as well. The Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center offers 100,000 square feet of meeting space. Just two blocks north, the William A. Egan Civic & Convention Center has 33,000 square feet of meeting space in a layout easily tailored to fit small sessions as well as larger gatherings. And that’s just the first taste of Anchorage’s venues.
6.
THE BEST MIX Anchorage has the perfect blend of metropolitan amenities and outdoor adventure. Fantastic meeting sites are coupled with gorgeous views of six mountain ranges. Fine dining and shopping are paired with hundreds of miles of paved multi-use trails and thousands of acres of pristine parkland.
7.

ALASKA IS A FOUR-SEASON DESTINATION Because Anchorage sits on the coast of Southcentral Alaska and is protected by the Chugach Mountain Range, the city maintains a temperate, maritime climate. Alaska is a huge state, covering a landmass equal to about one-fifth of the contiguous United States. When stories of Alaska’s weather extremes are published, the area affected could be up to 900 miles away from Anchorage. Anchorage’s winter temperatures average 20°F. Add low humidity to the equation and temperatures feel even warmer. Even on the shortest days of winter, Anchorage gets seven and a half hours of functional daylight. Those short days don’t last long; even by February, Anchorage experiences more daylight than many cities in the Lower 48 states. On the longest days of summer, temperatures can reach the high 70s, and Anchorage gets 22 hours of functional daylight, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy all that Anchorage has to offer.
GETTING TO ALASKA IS EASY Dog mushing may be the state sport, but that doesn’t mean you’ll use a sled to get here. Last year, Anchorage’s international airport served more than 5 million passengers. More than 50 carriers use the airport, including 29 domestic and 18 international airlines. Direct and nonstop flights are available from many U.S. cities. ALASKA IS AFFORDABLE Anchorage is very cost effective. In a price comparison survey among several cities, Anchorage had the lowest prices for many items associated with meetings, including breakfast service, a cheese tray for 50 attendees, coffee, trade show and audio/ visual set up.* Anchorage not only has lower prices on many services, since there is no sales tax in Anchorage, meeting planners can save even more.
VISITANCHORAGE.COM/TRUTH
With many direct flights, abundant meeting space, a mild climate and modern amenities, Anchorage is ready to host your meeting.

At street level, and at almost 50,000 square feet, Idlughet (Eklutna) Exhibit Hall is the largest room of its kind in Alaska, offering over an acre of event space. More intimate than the exhibit hall, Dena’ina’s second floor meeting rooms are just as spectacularly designed, and offer highly configurable options for meetings, seminars, classes or special occasions. Modern A/V connections, LCD signage and touchscreen audio and lighting controls keep any meeting running smoothly.
The K’enakatnu (Knik) executive boardroom is the perfect space for smaller meetings. Perhaps the most glamorous event space, the third floor Tikahtnu (Cook Inlet) Ballroom, greets guests with floor-to-ceiling windows and views of Alaska’s prolific mountain ranges. From small company holiday parties to gala charity balls, opening-night cocktail mixers to keynote convention speeches, the Tikahtnu Ballroom is flexible and accommodating. The outdoor terrace provides a spectacular vantage point for guests in all seasons.

EGAN CIVIC & CONVENTION CENTER The William A. Egan Civic & Convention Center offers more than 85,000 square feet of affordable, highly configurable meeting, exhibit and pre-function space in the heart of downtown Anchorage. A generation of Alaskans have come together at the Egan Center to do business, network, celebrate and be entertained. With the completion of nearly $5 million in upgrades in recent years, the Egan Center is ready to welcome a whole new generation of meetings and events. From conventions and expos to intimate family gatherings, there’s a space at the Egan Center for any type of event. The Egan Center has three levels of functional, affordable meeting space. The Explorers Hall has 19,306 square feet of column-free space, with enough space for a banquet for 1,536
guests or a trade show set-up for up to 132 8-by-10 booths. Explorers Hall has been the stage for concerts and conventions, trade shows, meetings and benefits. For smaller events, Explorers Hall can be subdivided into three self-contained spaces – Cook, Arteaga and La Perouse halls. On the lower level, the 11,228-square foot Summit Hall is even more flexible. Divisible into as many as 14 individual rooms ranging from 570 to 1,368 square feet each, Summit Hall’s modular wall systems allow for a number of permutations to suit any need.

Alaska Center for the Performing Arts
University of Alaska Anchorage
DIVERSE SETTINGS Anchorage has a unique variety of quality venues. Depending on the needs of the specific meeting, trade show or sporting event, the convention sales staff at Visit Anchorage can guide a planner into the best choice. Each of these venues has a unique character and is rich in history, while providing stateof-the-art technology required by most modern meetings.
ARTFUL MEETINGS Immerse your event in the art and history of Alaska. The Anchorage Museum has event space and on-site catering that match the creativity captured in the permanent collection. The atrium’s sparkling reflective pool and impressive marble staircase provide an elegant environment for memorable occasions. The inspiring views aren’t always works on canvas or in wood; the stunning Chugach Gallery looks out on the mountain range east of the city that gave the gallery its name.
TAKE THE STAGE Soaring orchestral performances, sophisticated receptions and informative lectures have all found a home in the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. The complex is the largest performance venue in the state of Alaska and is home to the city’s symphony, opera and several theater companies. With a sky bridge linking it to the Egan Center and windows looking out on to Town Square Park, the center fits into the heart of downtown. Four beautifully designed performance halls are complemented by spacious lobby and reception areas. AN EDUCATED CHOICE The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) campus is an effective, affordable meeting location near the offices of many of Alaska’s largest companies and Providence Alaska Medical Center. UAA offers plenty of housing both on campus and in the nearby Midtown district.
HISTORY AND HERITAGE A world-class cultural center, the Alaska Native Heritage Center provides a natural atmosphere, with buildings representing each of Alaska’s native cultures encircling a tranquil lake. The center is well known for Alaska Native song, story, dance and sport; arrange for performances, demonstrations, storytellers and personal tour guides. Explore Alaska’s first cultures and learn how they continue to shape Alaska.
ONE WITH NATURE Why wait until the meeting ends to explore Alaska? There are plenty of venues that put your meeting in the middle of aweinspiring scenery. Let your imagination run wild at Campbell Creek Science Center, Kincaid Park or the Eagle River Nature Center. Hang with furry arctic residents at the Alaska Zoo. Area ski chalets and clubhouses put the meeting in the middle of the forests of the Chugach Mountains. Host an event at Crow Creek Mine and your participants may come away with nuggets of more than just information; the site is one of the region’s oldest – and most productive – gold mines.
THE PIONEERING SPIRIT Let the meeting take flight under the wings of historic planes at the Alaska Aviation Museum. A vintage Alaska bush plane zooms across the room above the heads of delegates. Relax in Jet Age style in the First Class Theater or cruise through a session aboard the museum’s Boeing 737, specially configured for groups of up to 40 people.
“Anchorage is a bucket-list destination. Your meeting attendees will thank you for choosing Anchorage.” - Jule Uddfolk, International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons

Explore unique offsite event and sporting venues. Sullivan Arena
Alaska Native Heritage Center
EVENT AND SPORTING VENUES UNDISPUTED CHAMPIONS With fantastic trails, massive parks and world-class skiing, Anchorage is the perfect location for large sporting events. The city’s sports venues are ready for competitions and tournaments of any skill level. From basketball to hockey, skiing to mountain climbing, marathon running to golf and swimming, Anchorage hosts state, regional, national and international sporting events with ease. SULLIVAN ARENA There are few sounds quite like a capacity crowd rumbling the Sullivan Arena. With stadium-style seating for up to 9,000 people, the arena is home to local sports teams like the Alaska Aces hockey team and tournaments including the Kendall Hockey Classic. But the space also lends itself to trade shows, expos, concerts and other performances with 32,000 square feet of exhibit space. ALASKA AIRLINES CENTER Opened in 2014, the Alaska Airlines Center has tipped off a new option for planners. The 5,000-seat arena plays host to the annual Great Alaska Shootout college basketball tournament. There’s more on offer than hard court. An auxiliary gym, box suites, in-house catering and restaurant venues, an indoor jogging track and sports medicine facilities are all under one roof.
KINCAID PARK With 1,400 acres of parkland and nearly 40 miles of multipurpose trails, Kincaid Park is Anchorage’s crown jewel for outdoor sporting events. Home to numerous community races and events, Kincaid also hosted the U.S. Nationals cross-country ski championships numerous times, most recently in 2014, as well as Nordic events in the 2001 Special Olympics World Winter Games, and several National Masters cross-country ski championships.
“We had a great experience in Anchorage. For the first time in my 15-year career we didn’t have one complaint! As far as I’m concerned, it was the best meeting ever!” - Kim Anderson, Staff Director, American Bar Association, Solo, Small Firm & General Practice Division
GIRDWOOD Alaska’s dreams of downhill glory start in Girdwood. The slopes of Mount Alyeska have been the site of Alpine competition in Alaska for decades, with several U.S. National and Junior National races taking place on the mountain. TOP TRAILS Anchorage has some of the best trails in the world with more than 135 miles of paved, multi-use paths. Runner’s World Magazine, Bicycling Magazine and the National Hiking Society have given honors to Anchorage’s expansive trail system. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race®, Mayor’s Marathon and Big Wild LifeTM Runs all make use of this extensive network.
POOLS, PARKS, LINKS AND RINKS In a city this large, the possibilities are endless. Anchorage has 11 indoor swimming pools, countless indoor and outdoor playing fields, three 18-hole golf courses, shooting and archery ranges, a 400-meter outdoor speed skating oval and almost a dozen indoor ice rinks.
“Our registration numbers increased dramatically due to Alaska being such a bucket list destination. The majority of our attendees arrived early and stayed late. The Anchorage CVB was amazing from our initial site visit to their follow up after our meeting took place. I fell in love with Alaska.” - Joe Donahue, Experient/Earthquake Engineering Research Institute

REAL ALASKANS
TOP CHEF FRESH AND FUN Chef Jens Nannestad was born and raised by a Danish forester in southern Sweden. After graduating with honors from the California Culinary Academy in 1985, he moved up to Alaska. He worked for Jens Hansen (a whole generation of Anchorage chefs refer to Hansen simply as “big Jens”) at the prestigious Crow’s Nest Restaurant in The Hotel Captain Cook. When “big Jens” started his own restaurant, Jens took over the helm as Chef de Cuisine. After a stint back in the Lower 48 and shipboard cooking on cruise ships calling at locations in the Pacific, something drew him back to Alaska. “I knew from my first trip up Anchorage had a lot to offer. It was more up my alley, and I felt like I could add something,” says Nannestad. “And for a place with 300,000 people, it is amazing. There are so many good restaurants here.” In 1993 he returned to Anchorage as chef at O’Malley’s on the Green. Two years later he opened his own place, Southside Bistro. The restaurant anchors one end of a modest line mall. But in true Anchorage fashion, outward appearances conceal the amazing food and fantastic vibe inside the doors. Southside Bistro serves up a juicy burger, but also delicate angel hair pasta loaded with scallops or shrimp. Fresh Alaska oysters and fish share the menu with lamb, steaks and Scandinavian roast duck. “I want the most famous chef in the country to walk by and see something on the menu that catches his eye, but I also have something on there for the guy who just got off a construction site.” Neighborhood regulars rub elbows with those who have ventured in to try out the place about which they keep hearing. No matter when you visit, the restaurant is convivial. “I want to throw a party every day,” says Nannestad. He says people want to have a good time and he’s here to make good meals alongside.

MUSH ON A TRUE CHAMPION
“Living in Alaska has given me the American dream to its absolute fullest,” says four-time Iditarod Champion Martin Buser. Born in Winterthur, Switzerland, in 1958, Buser became fascinated with sled dogs while still a teen. He came to Alaska in 1979 to enhance his knowledge of the care and training of sled dogs. His plan was to stay in Alaska for a year. “Well, I was hooked on the dogs, and it was the beginning of the end for me,” said Buser. “I wanted to stay in Alaska.” In 1980, he ran his first Iditarod, Alaska’s great sled dog race, which begins in Anchorage and ends on the western coast of Alaska in the city of Nome. Buser has completed the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race® more than 25 times, giving him the most consecutive finishes of any Iditarod musher. Martin, wife Kathy Chapoton, and sons Nikolai and Rohn (both named after Iditarod checkpoints), reside in Big Lake, Alaska, about 60 miles north of Anchorage, where the family owns and manages Happy Trails Kennel.
“I got here in 1979 with a backpack and a couple of dirty pairs of blue jeans. And now, we’ve carved out a great corner of Alaska. Really, I could have anything my little heart desires,” said Buser. Martin is a man who embodies all that Alaska represents – its spirit; its competitive nature, its love of the land and its creatures. Martin is a tireless advocate for his Alaska huskies, often spending his time traveling around the state and talking to different groups about his dogs and how he cares for them at home and on the trail. “I’ve learned the language well enough to share my stories and my life with visitors. I have made a 365-day-a-year commitment to the dogs and want to do my dogs justice.” Martin Buser is living a life as big as Alaska.

ENTERTAINMENT
BRING ALASKA INTO THE SESSION
INSPIRATION, ALASKA STYLE Hear tales from the trail; the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race® is one of the toughest endeavors in Alaska. The men and women who run the race know a little something about managing a team, facing incredible obstacles, and the thrill of victory. Of course, there’s a diverse array of local speakers to select from to present at your event. Hear tales of sporting glory both on the field and in Alaska fishing waters. Get pumped up with a motivational talk, or hear business insights straight from successful Alaskans. These are speeches that set the right tone and stick with delegates long after the applause fades. GET WILD Get eye to eye with a bald eagle or snout to snout with Alaska’s most famous porcupine. Educational programs from wildlife conservation groups are an informative way to learn about Alaska and start things off with animal magnetism. ECHOES THROUGH THE AGES The sound of a drum strikes more than the ear. The rhythmic pounding of an Alaska Native song can often be felt down to the bone. A performance from an Alaska Native troupe will share songs handed down through generations. Native music and dance contains the true soul of Alaska and provides a window on cultures that have shaped Alaska for thousands of years. IN TUNE WITH ALASKA Alaska’s pioneer spirit lives on in each note of soulful wilderness ballads and raucous songs of frontier optimism. Alaska musicians range from masters of rustic banjo to modern day impresarios of the turntable.

MIND, BODY AND SOUL BREAK OUT OF THE ROUTINE Meetings are breaking out of their sedentary slumber. Mountains of muffins are slowly giving way to mountain hikes as destinations shift to meet attendee demands for healthier options. Active, healthy conventions come naturally in Anchorage. The city is regularly recognized by the American Lung Association as one of the best cities for air quality. Even the tap water is distinct; it flows from a nearby glacial lake and was selected by the U.S. Conference of Mayors as the “Best Tasting Water” in the USA. Whether you have an hour or a week to explore, it’s easy to get the circulation going in Anchorage. It can be as easy as a walk in pedestrian-friendly downtown or as exhilarating as a paddle on a glacial lake, all without ever leaving city limits. Alaska is synonymous with the outdoors, but healthy choices start much closer to conference sessions than most people imagine. Downtown Anchorage is incredibly walkable and easy to navigate. Streets are laid out in a north-south and east-west grid. The simple layout and broad sidewalks make the walk from the hotel to the convention center, restaurants, shopping or nearby parks easy and enjoyable. Every Tuesday night a 5-K run sets off from a running store near the Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center, and a local gym hosts free yoga sessions on the Delaney Park Strip every Wednesday evening throughout the summer.
TOP TRAILS The network of paved, multi-use trails starts downtown and stretches more than a hundred miles through the city’s parks and greenbelts. These smooth, paved paths are perfect for running, walking and biking and offer a special perspective of the city. The 11-mile Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is the crown jewel; it begins downtown and runs along the coast of Cook Inlet. The waterfront is great for panoramic views of the mountains. Moose, sandhill cranes and other wildlife are also frequently seen along the trail. Kincaid Park and the Hillside trail system are tucked into the city’s secluded spaces, offering walking or running in quiet, wooded relaxation. The local ski association grooms area trails all winter long, making both great spots for cross-country skiing as well. ELEVATE YOUR MOOD For a quick dose of mountain air, Chugach State Park offers a little bit of everything, and the adventures start just 20 minutes from the convention centers. Hiking leads with easy routes at Glen Alps or Thunderbird Falls and stretch as far as the eye can see. Carved out of a mountain valley, Eklutna Lake is the perfect spot for kayaking and mountain biking. From its pristine setting to epic adventures, Anchorage offers a detox for the body and the mind. PRE AND POST ACTIVITIES EXPLORING ALASKA A meeting or convention in Anchorage brings out the explorer in all of us. Alaska is one of those places that conjures up visions of untouched wilderness, untamed places and epic adventures. Host a meeting here and give delegates the opportunity to knock a few things off their bucket list. Here are just a handful of the things we know attendees will want to do before or after a successful meeting. BIRDS’-EYE VIEW Mount McKinley is breathtaking, even from a distance. North America’s tallest peak can be spotted from downtown Anchorage on a clear day. Getting a closer look at this giant mountain and the other peaks of the Alaska Range is easy. Flightseeing trips depart Anchorage daily to circle McKinley, explore the surrounding glaciers and discover wildlife roaming along the route.
GOLF UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN Anchorage has three 18-hole golf courses. And with Anchorage’s long summer days, there’s no trouble sneaking in a round. Tee off as late as 10 p.m. and enjoy unforgettable scenery. A walk down the fairway can quickly turn into a wildlife viewing trip. Local critters are regular sights on Anchorage courses.
“I have been planning conferences for more than three decades throughout the U.S. There is no better city than Anchorage for help in getting to know the city and planning the conference.” - Bette Worley, National Student Exchange
CATCH OF THE DAY Land a monster fish steps from downtown hotels. Alaska’s legendary salmon spots start right outside the door. Ship Creek is one of the most accessible sport fisheries in the state, and king and silver salmon surge upstream during the summer. Nearby outfitters can provide everything needed for a few quick casts or a whole afternoon. But that’s just the beginning. Monster halibut and all five species of pacific salmon are within a day’s drive or short flight away.
CELEBRATE WINTER Have snowy fun during winter in Anchorage. Rev up for a snowmobile tour of Alaska glaciers, learn the state sport on a dog-sledding trip through pristine woodland trails or slap down skis and explore the slopes at Alyeska Resort.
ON OPEN WATER Cruise in Prince William Sound or Kenai Fjords National Park year round. See breaching whales, tidewater glaciers, pristine waters and clear blue skies. These surroundings are incredible and a highlight of any Alaska experience.
WILD RESIDENTS AND EXOTIC VISITORS Thousands of species call Anchorage home. Spot moose, foxes, beavers and an occasional bear along trails and in city neighborhoods. Watch salmon travel upstream in Ship Creek or trout leaping in local lakes. Bird lovers flock to spots like Potter Marsh; the area is home or a migratory stopover for more than 220 species of birds, including bald eagles, trumpeter swans, Canada geese and a broad variety of ducks. Marine mammals abound; beluga, orca and gray whales, porpoise, sea otters, seals and Steller sea lions all take to the waters in this part of Alaska!
Muster up some muscle and board kayaks for a leisure paddle along a lake shore or out to sea. The serene setting provides the opportunity for an intimate and quiet experience with nature. It’s just the explorer and the sea, and the puffin, and the otter. What an adventure!
Not all winter fun speeds across the snow; why not cozy up in a cabin and watch the northern lights dance across the sky outside? Winter skies are primed for the amazing auroras.
