Craft beer meets craft food at 49th State Brewing Company. 49th State brings recipes perfected in the shadow of Denali at their Healy outfit to local digs: an Anchorage brewpub. The restaurant pours its soul into beer and the best of Alaska into the menu. House-made hefeweizen, inspired IPAs, and peerless pilsners flow from the taps. They’re not flowing very far either; beer is brewed on-site. And it’s hard to go wrong when the first brewing ingredient is water from a glacier. Known for sourcing Alaska meats and produce, the menu is perfect for a filling meal, light lunch, or snack to balance what’s in the glass. Sip a Solstice IPA, soak in the sun, and take in the view. The names of explorers feature prominently in Anchorage. Captain James Cook’s name graces the body of water flanking the coast of the city and one of the city’s finest hotels. Even Cook’s cohorts gained a level of fame; Fletcher Christian may be best known for the mutiny on the Bounty, but in Anchorage his name is now synonymous with great food in a relaxed atmosphere. Fletcher’s restaurant offers smart appetizers, gourmet pizzas, and hearty dishes that would quell any uprising. Unwind in the welcoming warmth of an English-style pub. A maritime influence extends beyond the restaurant’s name to favorite dishes like the seasonal fresh fish piccata and the grilled prawn risotto. Tequila 61° serves up a modern take on time-tested dishes from south of the border, served north of expectations. Alaska seafood or prime cuts of meat are all uniquely spiced to evoke the true taste of Mexico, served in a charmingly rustic and handcrafted atmosphere. This is Mexican food the way it should be: subtly sweet and spicy sauces; salty cotija cheese; pepper-fueled heat. Try the grilled Alaska king crab – you’ve never had king crab quite like this! Or savor the fajita molcajete, a twist on an age-old cooking method and served in a volcanic stone bowl. There’s plenty of fresh guacamole to share, and artful desserts to top it all off. A full-service bar features craft cocktails and margaritas flavored with hibiscus, basil, ginger, and fresh-squeezed lime juice. Or select from featured wines, local craft beers, small batch spirits, and fine sipping tequilas and mezcal. Local favorites: jicama shrimp tacos, fajita molcajete, mezerec cocktail

LOCAL SIPS Anchorage’s craft brewers tap into a distinctly Alaska ingredient: the glacier-fed waters of nearby Eklutna Lake. It’s brewed into pilsners, porters, and everything in between, then served at taprooms and restaurants around the state. There are now more than a dozen breweries in Anchorage proper and more than 30 statewide varieties pouring in Anchorage, making the city the place to be for Alaska beer. Look for other local ingredients like spruce tips, wild berries, or Alaskagrown barley, and always ask about new creations: Alaskan brewers are innovative and adventurous, and there’s always something new brewing behind the scenes. Looking for a different taste? Try an Anchorage cider or mead – a robust honey wine. Both are available from local producers.

Double Shovel Cider Company is Alaska’s first micro-cidery. It adds something new to Anchorage’s brew scene, although pressing fruit to make refreshing drinks is as American as apple…cider! Hand-picked Alaska and Washington apples, berries, and syrups combine for ingenious ciders. Flagship Forget-Me-Hopped cider and other staples already have an enthusiastic following, and a visit to their chic taproom might mean an encounter with a small batch. Cranberry, rose hips, and even jalapeños are just a few surprise ingredients. Can’t choose? Opt for a flight and sample a few. The Double Shovel taproom hosts special events, and a roster of visiting food trucks means plenty of plates to go with a glass. You can also pick up cans and fill a growler to go. With handcrafted ciders loaded with Alaska ingredients, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more inviting place to find a new taste. Local favorites: blueberry sour, extra-dry, pineapple
SIP AND SAVOR Good libations and conversations are easy to find in Anchorage. Breweries use clean, clear Alaska water for their award-winning beers. Anchorage wineries put good time in a glass with surprising varietals, and even a few local fruits. Local distillers use the best ingredients to get everyone into the “spirit.” Or join Big Swig Tours and explore the Last Frontier one craft brewery at a time.

LOCAL VIBES Anchorage knows how to have a good time, from free summer shows in Town Square Park to lively midwinter festivals and popular year-round art walks. First Friday events – held on the first Friday of every month – bring the work of local artists to cafes, galleries, bars, and breweries around the city. Throughout the year, catch traveling performers, comedy shows, and live music at numerous nightclubs, pubs, and coffeehouses. Local theaters host everything from renowned national productions to madein-Alaska plays, while fall through spring, the Alaska Center for Performing Arts books the best of Broadway and beyond. Locales feature headlining acts ranging from the obscure to the celebrated, and area museums highlight Anchorage’s cultural heritage, past and present. Music lovers can find regular live performances at a variety of Anchorage’s favorite establishments, and outdoor concerts get your toes tapping and fingers snapping. Celtic, blues, acoustic, R&B, and bluegrass, among others, resonate throughout the city where the scene is as diverse as the Alaska landscape. Sports fans can catch the big game on a personal table TV or giant flat screen at local pubs around town; test your taste buds on five-alarm hot wings or local favorites like halibut cheeks. Leave the remote behind and pick up some tickets for exciting live sports action. Anchorage boasts two semi-pro baseball teams, club-style boxing, and the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves. 88
4 FAVORITE FESTIVALS FUR RENDEZVOUS
Late February – early March An Anchorage tradition since 1935, the annual Fur Rendezvous (or Rondy, as it’s affectionately known by locals) has become one of the city’s most magical events. A carnival, parade, snow sculpture competition, community pancake feed – the two-week festival hosts a full schedule of unique Alaska fun. Watch the World Championship Sled Dog Races, run with the reindeer down Fourth Avenue, and catch the largest fireworks display in the state.
GIRDWOOD FOREST FAIR – Early July Every summer, Girdwood’s popular Forest Fair draws thousands of people to the woods at the edge of Chugach State Park. Find a spot curbside to watch the parade, complete with fire trucks and local floats. Vendors sell handmade arts and crafts, food booths serve Alaska-grown snacks and locally made treats, and entertainers from around Alaska perform from multiple stages throughout the forest.
SUMMER SOLSTICE FESTIVAL – Late June
The annual Summer Solstice Festival makes the most of the longest day of the year, filling downtown’s Fourth Avenue with food trucks and an exhilarating array of family friendly fun. Browse dozens of vendor booths, or join thousands of Alaskans cheering on local teams in the Hero Games, where military, first responders, and Anchorage athletes compete in fitness and relay-style competitions.
BEAR PAW FESTIVAL – July
Between the Bear Paw Grand Parade, a carnival, a classic car show, a foot race, and the iconic Slippery Salmon Olympics, this annual summer event is a family friendly favorite that takes place in the cozy community of Eagle River, a quick 20-minute drive from downtown Anchorage.

MUSIC HOT SPOTS A variety of Anchorage bars and restaurants offer occasional live music and other performances often highlighting talented local artists. Check out places like 49th State Brewing Co., The Whale’s Tail Bistro and Wine Bar, Sullivan’s Steakhouse, Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse, and Matanuska Brewing Company.
ANCHORAGE MUSEUM – In the summer,
the spacious front lawn of the Anchorage Museum becomes an outdoor stage for various local musicians performing for Lunch on the Lawn, a free midday event combining live music, hands-on family activities, and tasty local lunch menus courtesy a variety of Anchorage food trucks. When the snow flies, shows move inside: On the first Friday of every month, it’s not uncommon to find a stage set up in the museum atrium, or catch a folk band performing in an elevator.
PERATROVICH PARK – Nestled on a tree-lined corner of Fourth Avenue, cozy Peratrovich Park is home to Music in the Park – a free seasonal Wednesday concert series featuring solo and group acts from around the state. On Mondays, there’s Music for Little Ones – an interactive, pint-sized performance for the youngest music lovers in the group.
TOWN SQUARE PARK – In the center of downtown Anchorage, Town Square Park is the perfect venue for Live After Five, a Thursday evening concert series featuring free performances, a beer and wine garden, and an assortment of tantalizing Alaska treats to fill your belly.

TAKE HOME THE TASTE The meal may end, but there’s more to look forward to than an after-dinner mint. The flavors of Anchorage travel well. Here are five of the best ways to savor bites of Alaska, even at home. Flying fish – Ever seen a salmon soar? Local markets and processors can ship Alaska seafood right to your door. Pack up your catch, or select from the catch of the day. Tree treats – Maple may get the glory elsewhere, but Alaskans tap birch trees for syrup. This caramel-flavored concoction goes on more than pancakes. Meat me in Anchorage – Hot dog carts are an Anchorage staple, and reindeer sausage packed to go is an easy item to take home. You’ll surprise a few friends with this flavor straight from Alaska. Local buzz – Anchorage leads the nation in coffee spots per capita, from driveup huts to quaint cafes. Coffee culture is alive and well, and local roasters offer up beans ready to help you impart the coffee-shop vibe to your kitchen counter. Growlers and cans – Canned beer packs light and travels well, so locals love to take it along on outdoor adventures. Those same characteristics make canned Anchorage brews easy to pack up no matter your destination. There’s even a spot inside security in the Anchorage airport filling growlers to go.
