CREATURE COMFORTS WITH PLENTY OF CRITTERS!

PMS PMS and mountains, PMS Anchorage is an urban oasis in untamed wilderness. ThePMS city is flanked by both water 548 with streams and greenbelts weaving through the city.185 Wildlife that share this 361 rich habitat2915 include moose, beaver, salmon, brown and black bear, wolves, lynx, coyotes, mountain goats and Dall sheep. Hundreds of bird species also make Anchorage home or pass through on annual migrations. Beluga whales are a frequent sight just offshore in Turnagain Arm. It’s not necessary to travel far from cosmopolitan comforts to enjoy wildlife encounters. In fact, it is not necessary to leave the city at all! For guaranteed wildlife viewing, head to the Alaska Zoo, situated in a natural boreal forest in the Chugach foothills and featuring a number of native and exotic cold-climate species, such as polar bears, wolverines, Amur tigers, Bactrian camels and snow leopards. Farther south, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a vast park with brown and black bear, caribou, elk, moose and wood bison. The Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward is the world’s largest cold water marine research facility. It is the place to see wildlife found below the waves and along the coast of Resurrection Bay and Kenai Fjords National Park.

Popular wildlife viewing hot spots around anchorage include: Beluga Point and Windy Corner (along the Seward Highway) | beluga whale, Dall sheep Chester Creek Trail | moose Eagle River Nature Center | salmon, beaver, moose, brown and black bear Glen Alps | moose, brown and black bear, wolves, lynx and occasionally wolverine Kincaid Park | moose Potter Marsh and Westchester Lagoon | migratory waterfowl and birds of prey, salmon

BECOME AN EXPERT SUMMER SAMPLER

A day in Anchorage is filled with limitless potential. There are thousands of ways to combine activities, attractions, restaurants and experiences to make a perfect summer day in Anchorage. This sample itinerary is just a start; check out the Itinerary Planner on pages 8-17 for a full spectrum of possibilities.

Rise early and start the day off right with a yummy breakfast. Hometown restaurants are the perfect place to try an Alaska twist on traditional favorites. Order King Crab Benedict or a stack of sourdough hotcakes. Rent a bike or stroll along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail to enjoy spectacular views of Cook Inlet or take a shuttle to a trail head in the Chugach State Park. Wildlife like the trail almost as much as humans; you may see one of the more than 1,500 moose that live in Anchorage.

Morning

Grab a bite of Alaska at one of the many sidewalk vendors along the downtown streets. Enjoy a salmon quesadilla or reindeer sausage and a feast for the eyes at the same time; the city’s parks and sidewalks are filled with huge flowers blooming in the long summer sun. After lunch, cast a line for salmon at Ship Creek. From license to waders to pole, local fishing outfitters have everything needed to land the big one. You can even take your fish home; local processors can prep, pack and ship catches home to share with family and friends.

Evening

Learn more about Anchorage on one of the many city walking or trolley tours. Tour options include historic Anchorage, culinary delights, ghost tours and more. Many restaurants offer outdoor seating or decks with views of Cook Inlet and the Chugach Mountains. Be sure to try a microbrew from one of the many breweries in Alaska. Stay up late with the midnight sun!

BIG WILD LIFE

ON THE HORIZON

Keep an eye out for these new and exciting developments happening in the last frontier.

Alaska Railroad adds all-inclusive dining to ffiirst-class GoldStar Passenger Service

Passengers travelling the state with Alaska Railroad’s GoldStar passenger service will enjoy all-inclusive dining options beginning in summer 2015. The expanded service will include any of the locally inspired meals offered on Alaska Railroad’s onboard menu, as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. GoldStar double-deck train cars feature dome window ceilings, a private bar and outdoor viewing deck. This premier seating option is available on the Denali Star train between Anchorage and Fairbanks and the Coastal Classic train between Anchorage and Seward.

New lodging options in Anchorage and Denali

Aramark completed a renovation of their own with the rebranded Denali Park Village. The 20-acre area near the entrance of Denali National Park includes an upgraded lodge, cabins and a mining-themed marketplace along the shores of the Nenana River.

Alaska cruise and land tour itineraries to include more time in Anchorage

© AKRR

Many Alaska cruise and land tour providers are adjusting their itineraries to include several additional hours to enjoy Anchorage area attractions. With the extra time, visitors can take in the city’s innovative cuisine, explore cultural highlights or enjoy the area’s extensive trail system. The longer visit also accommodates many day and evening tours, which cater to everyone from photographers to craft brewing enthusiasts.

THERE’S MORE ASHORE!

Help your clients see more of Alaska; adding land to a cruise itinerary is easy and adds more amazing Alaska wildlife, glaciers and experiences to the trip. Anchorage’s unique location allows you to pack in a lot of adventure after cruising across the Gulf of Alaska. Help your clients see more of Alaska with land and sea packages. Here are the keys to building the best itinerary:

Choose one way cruises: Seven-day, one-way cruise itineraries between Vancouver, British Columbia,

and either Seward or Whittier, Alaska, make it easy to add pre- or post-cruise land travel. Both ports are linked to Anchorage by road and rail, and the trip into Anchorage is picturesque by itself.

Pick a package, or choose your own adventures: Select a cruisetour, or add three to five (or more!) extra days for independent exploration in Southcentral. Either way, you’ll have enough time to explore national parks, get an up-close look at amazing glaciers, whales, bears and moose.

Consider extra activities: By day, dog sled across an icy glacier, spot copious wildlife, fly out to 6

Visit

Mount McKinley and get to know Alaska’s first people. By night, enjoy hip amenities, abundant fresh-caught seafood and the frontier spirit of Alaska’s largest city.

The Voyager Inn, located in the heart of downtown Anchorage and steps from the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, recently unveiled a property-wide renovation. The boutique hotel offers large rooms with luxurious bedding and kitchenettes. Guests of The Voyager also enjoy a complimentary full breakfast and access to the athletic clubs and swimming pool at the adjacent Hotel Captain Cook.
