Welcome to Anderson
Immerse
While the city of Anderson offers exceptional shopping, dining and business opportunities, it retains its rural charm offering a little bit of something for everyone in one community. The city of Anderson is the county seat of Anderson County. The city population is approximately 28,000 with an urbanized area of more than 70,000. It is one of three major cities that comprise the Upstate of South Carolina (along with Greenville and Spartanburg). The Upstate is the fastest growing region in the state, and is positioned between Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina. Eleven towns make up Anderson County, and each town offers a slice of life needed to make our city what it is. From farmers to mill workers, schools to churches, the community grows stronger every day.
Anderson
Anderson is the county seat of Anderson County. During the late 1800s, Anderson earned the nickname “Electric City” for its early adoption of hydrolelectric power. The nickname is still in use today, but Anderson is now also known as the “City of Hospitality.” Anderson’s spirit and quality of life has earned national recognition as Anderson County was named an “AllAmerica City” in 2000. It is the home of Anderson University, a selective private comprehensive university of approximately 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students.
Belton
Belton is located in Anderson County on US 178 east of the City of Anderson. A thriving textile town in the mid-1900s, Belton started out as a railroad town when the Greenville to Columbia Railroad connected South Carolina’s Piedmont Region to the existing rail system from Columbia to Charleston in the mid 1800s. The town took its name from the first president of the railroad company, John Belton O’Neal.
Honea Path
Honea Path is a town in Abbeville and Anderson counties. Honea Path, which dates from 1794, is located primarily in Anderson County but partially in Abbeville County. Residents of the town pronounce the word honey-uh.
Iva
Iva is located in southern Anderson County close to the Abbeville County line. In the late 1800s Iva was a shipping station for the Seaboard Railroad.
Pelzer
Pelzer is located in eastern Anderson County on the Saluda River. The town’s history is linked with that of Pelzer Manufacturing Company, which began textile production in the late 1880s. The company bought the very first generators made by the General Electric Company and was the first factory in the country to have incandescent lights.
Pendleton
It was Cherokee land when colonists first began to settle here. The Cherokee sided with the British during the Revolutionary War, but ceded their land to the State of South Carolina after the war. Most of Pendleton’s white settlers were Scottish and Irish emigrants who had fought for American independence, but by the 1800s wealthy landowners from the Lowcountry were building luxurious summer homes in the area. They were attracted by cooler temperatures and fertile soil. The mix of hardscrabble mountain farmers and the more educated and socially refined summer population made Pendleton unique among upstate communities during the antebellum years.
Piedmont
Piedmont is a census-designated place (CDP) along the Saluda River in Anderson and Greenville counties. Native Americans used the area as a river crossing because its rock formations jutted into the Saluda River. After the Civil War, Henry Pinckey Hammett also found the riverside to be an ideal location – for a cotton mill. As early as the 1880s he used hydro-electrical power to run the machinery in his textile mills. From the 1920s until Duke Power expanded into the region after WWII, a water plant on the river also supplied electricity to Piedmont homes.
Powdersville
For many decades, Powdersville was mainly a farming community. In recent years, many new housing subdivisions and businesses along S.C. Highway 153 have turned Powdersville into a bustling suburban area. As an unincorporated community, Powdersville did not have its own post office or zip code until 2008. Most local businesses continue to use a Piedmont or Easley mailing address.
Starr
Starr was originally named Twiggs, but when the Savannah Valley Railroad was completed in 1884, the name was changed to Starr Station in honor of a popular engineer who drove the train through town.
West Pelzer
West Pelzer is also located along the Saluda River. Originally called Frankville, the name was changed to West Pelzer in 1918. West Pelzer is only a quarter mile from Pelzer, but the two towns are incorporated and operate as separate municipalities. They do however, share a zip code and telephone exchange.
Williamston
In 1842 a local farmer discovered a mineral spring and believed its water had healing properties. Word spread and soon people were traveling great distances to “take the waters.” Until the beginning of the Civil War, the area boomed as a health resort and was sometimes referred to as the “Saratoga of the South.” Today, the site of the mineral spring is a park where the community holds the Spring Water Festival each year in April.
Pendleton is a sister city of Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

Issaqueena Falls & Stumphouse Tunnel
Issaqueena Falls is a spectacular, 100 foot falls in Stumphouse Tunnel Park northwest of Walhalla. The falls are named for an Indian maiden, Issaqueena. She rode to a nearby fort to warn of a pending Indian attack and then escaped her pursuers by pretending to leap to her death over the falls, but actually hid beneath them. Near the Falls is Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel. The tunnel was started in the early 1850s as an attempt (unsuccessful) by the railroads to burrow though 1.5 miles of solid granite mountain, hoping to link Charleston to the Midwest. After 6 years of chipping and drilling with hand tools and black powder, lack of money and the Civil War brought work to a halt. Open every day from 10-5. The falls are six miles north of Walhalla on SC Hwy. 28. (864) 638-4343 | www.walhallasc.com/stumphouse

The South Carolina National Heritage Corridor
Imagination is a wonderful gift. With a little imagination, we can travel without ever leaving home. But imagination needs to be nourished with information and experience. And that’s what the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor is all about. As you travel, you’ll get experience - you’ll experience the weather, land, the people and the places. You’ll hear different accents, eat distinctive dishes and, if you seek them out, encounter old traditions. You’ll see things that you share and things that are different. They all come together to form the special qualities of South Carolina heritage along the Heritage Corridor, offering plenty to nourish the imagination. George McDaniel Director, Drayton Hall

Notable
Our towns and citizens are notable. The city of Anderson, also known as “The Electric City,” was given the nickname in 1897 when local resident William Whitner helped pioneer the transmission of power over long distances. Honea Path is the only place in the world thus-named. A settler named William Honey maintained a trail in the area, shown on early deeds as Honey Trail. This trail crossed the site of the town charted in 1855 as Honey Path. During reconstruction, an error listed the post office as Honea Path, which the postmaster honored.
