Bridge programme

Continuous programme on the Left Bank/Linkeroever

Walk across the bridge that commemorates the centenary of WWI, following in the footsteps of the many thousands of refugees, on 3, 4 or 5 October. On Friday evening 3 October around 7 p.m. Antwerp’s church bells will ring in the construction of the bridge. Go to the Scheldt quays for a good view of the opening spectacular “Les Sirènes de la Paix” by Cie Mécanique Vivante. Enjoy the amazing sound and light show while the Belgian and Dutch sappers build the pontoon bridge. The public can then walk across the beautifully lit bridge in the magical glow of the bridge lights.

The “Hellemonden” poetry trail by Vonk & Zonen will take you on a tour of twenty tombstones with poems by the war poets.

Antwerp commemorates the centenary of the First World War From a historical perspective Antwerp has several reasons to commemorate the beginning of World War I in 2014. As the “National Réduit” Antwerp briefly became the temporary capital of Belgium and home to the government, parliament, the army, the royal family and diplomats. The imposing double belt of fortresses prompted a large number of refugees to travel to the city. After the fall of Antwerp they mainly fled to the Netherlands, France and Great Britain. The Peace Centre of the City and Province of Antwerp has joined forces with over fifty partners in Belgium and abroad to put together an exciting cultural programme.

A few of the activities on the Left Bank

Walk across the River Scheldt and enjoy a wide range of musical intermezzos and theatre performances. Taste retro delicacies in the field kitchen and go to the covered Duvel Dream Ship for a real taste of the atmosphere and enjoy the view from the panoramic terrace. The programme also caters to very young visitors: besides the permanent playground in the Field of Buoys children can also have a fun time in the “play container”.

The Defence Village has a slew of military attractions in store for visitors, including a deathride, a climbing wall, a demining stand and many more. Hardy seamen between the ages of 5 and 14 years can learn to tie knots like sailors and hone their climbing skills on the amazing nautical island at the Sea Scout Base of the Scouts & Guides of Flanders, FOS Open Scouting, Royal Marine Cadets and Are You Waterproof. Discover all kinds of books about WWI in the pop-up bookstore by the MAS Shop. Return to the Right Bank through the Pedestrian Tunnel where the audio trail by “De Lijfeigenen” will take you back in time to the war with all kinds of sound fragments.

 Duvel Droomschip

On Friday evening 3 October Let’s Go Urban and Konichiwa Crew provides a platform for spoken word artists, a live band, DJs and dancers, to take an urban trip through time. The programme will start around 8 p.m. on the Left Bank (Linkeroever). On Saturday evening 4 October from 7pm Radio Modern – which has been renamed Radio Musette for the occasion – will take you back in time on a journey to the heyday of the Belle Epoque, during a “bal populaire” with accordion music. After having learnt the basics of the foxtrot you are ready to waltz the night away to the orchestra’s music. If you rent your outfit from Huis Baeyens they will give you a 10% discount if you mention that you need it for “Radio Musette”.
