1 PIETAS I JAN FABRE 25 May – 23 September 2012 This summer, the city of Antwerp presents the exhibition PIETAS JAN FABRE in the renovated Parkloods in Park Spoor Noord. In PIETAS, created in 2011, Fabre’s five white marble brain sculptures describe variations on the theme of the Pietà, the iconic image of Mary cradling the dead body of her son Jesus in her arms. Fabre’s interpretation presents concepts such as grief and acceptance, death and rebirth as well as man’s capacity for imagination, inventiveness and art. Pietà I-IV are large brain sculptures that figure as a base-world-cosmos for a range of naturalist and Christian symbolic systems. In the manner of mile poles or stations of the cross, the four sculptures compel viewers along the path to the exhibition’s apotheosis: the Merciful Dream (Pietà V). In this impressive piece, a challenging interpretation of Michelangelo’s iconic work, Fabre puts himself in the place of the Christ figure, and replaces Mary’s face with a skull. The four brain sculptures and the reinterpretation of Michelangelo’s Pietà are rendered in white Carrara marble and placed in geometrical orientation on a platform covered in 24-carat gold leaf. Hung around them are the Cocon I-X amulets, covered in shiny green jewel beetle shields. The lush colours and textures of the materials are hypnotic, enhancing the ritual nature of the experience of viewers who don felted slippers and mount the platform to see the sculptures. à Tues-Sun, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Closed 15 September 2012 I Admission: see website Parkloods, Park Spoor Noord, 2060 Antwerp c www.antwerpen.be/musea www.angelos.be

9 RICHARD WOODS I NIEUWBOUW The work of Richard Woods (b. 1966 in the UK) merges the boundaries between architecture, design and visual art. Sometimes it takes the shape of monumental installations in the public space or in open areas, other times that of small sculptures, paintings and objects. Woods was invited to create a work of art for the Kievit neighbourhood, and his installation entitled Nieuwbouw (New Buildings) draws attention on the neighbourhood in a colourful way. Around the newly-constructed route to the Central Station, the artist has transformed a number of building facades. Inspired by the countless patterns found in bricks throughout the neighbourhood, he has added emphasis and scale to illuminate the colour combinations of brick and mortar which were characteristic of ‘minor’, individual builders. à Permanent I Free admission Kievitplein, Van Spangenstraat, Van Immerseelstraat c

Cristian Bors & Marius Ritiu I Study for different perspective 6 May – 16 September 2012 You’re young, talented, but as yet unknown. How can you hope to make it in the world of art? This was the question that Romanian artists Cristian Bors (b. 1980) and Marius Ritiu (b. 1984) pondered recently. Theirs is a clear statement of their position: their hopes for achieving fame, preferably as soon as possible, reflect an ironic approach to the art world. The strategies they adopt promote recognition, but at the same time place the art world in a questionable light. On the plinth, the pair show a new sculpture that represents a key point in the work How to become famous in one month. à Permanent I Free admission Stadspark, adjacent to Quinten Matsyslei, c close to playground and skate ramp

18 DE ZWARTE PANTER GALLERY De Zwarte Panter Gallery opened on 5 December 1968 and is now the oldest gallery for contemporary art in Flanders and the second oldest in Belgium.
El Anatsui I Stitch in Time 10 May – 30 June 2012 El Anatsui (b. 1944, Ghana) grew up in Africa in the 1960s. It was an optimistic period during which a number of African countries achieved independence, and as such it was characterized by a deep-seated desire to discover personal and social identities. This search is the running theme in Anatsui’s work. He seeks out not only the depletion of traditions but also what is left of them and how they are adapted to the future, and investigates how that process shapes identity.

30 ROYAL MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS ANTWERP The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) is closed for renovation until late 2017. Deep Fountain I Cristina Iglesias In 1999, the city of Antwerp decided on a new design for the Leopold De Waelplaats. The plans were drawn up by the architectural teams of Robbrecht en Daem and Van Hee. From the beginning, art was integrated in the designs for the square. The concept for Deep Fountain was conceived by the internationally renowned Spanish sculptor Cristina Iglesias (b. 1956). The bas-relief consists of thousands of elements with an imprint of masses of eucalyptus leaves. The tiles are handmade and reflect the colonnade, the sky and the facades of buildings around the square. On a gentle slope leading to a crossways gap, the fountain – which in fact is not a fountain at all – fills completely and then drains again in a 64-minute cycle. The work presents a poetic interpretation of ebb and flow, of time, of the movement of water, calling to mind the nearby river Scheldt. à Permanent I Free admission KMSKA, Leopold De Waelplaats, c 2000 Antwerp www.kmska.be

31 HANS OP DE BEECK I PARADIGM Hans Op de Beeck placed his integrational art work Paradigm (2009) in the lobby of Den Bell. The work consists of a number of cases containing a range of objects and architectural scale models. These refer to the public space as well as elements present in nature and culture. They appear to be souvenirs from the Earth and its civilizations. With Paradigm, the artist invites viewers to consider the complexity of the big city, the amount of control we have of life in that context and our attempts to understand things and to plan ahead. The title reminds us that all of us do so from our own particular personal and professional points of view. At the same time, the work suggests the cases found in natural history museums and Renaissance collections of curiosities, and deals with heritage, cataloguing, preserving and maintaining objects. à Mon-Fri from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. I Free admission Den Bell, Francis Wellesplein 1, 2018 Antwerp c

Middelheim 2012 From 26 May 2012 The Middelheim Museum is a unique venue in Antwerp, and in 2012 it gets bigger and better. The transformation is impressive: the museum grounds were expanded by five hectares, infrastructure was thoroughly updated and the permanent collection was rejuvenated. Architect Paul Robbrecht was a key figure in the renovation process. He and his team from Robbrecht and Daem designed a semi-open exhibition pavilion named Het Huis (The House) for (fragile) works of art. Paul Robbrecht is also a guest curator and will assemble an exhibition of works by the German artist Thomas Schütte. At his request and that of museum director Menno Meewis, artists Roman Signer (Switzerland), Ai Weiwei (China) and Philippe van Snick (Belgium) will provide new work made to measure for the museum. As part of the renovations, the Braem pavilion has also been updated and offers space for well-known sculptures from the museum’s permanent collection. Exhibitions are changed twice every year, with a guest curator or scenographer deciding which pieces will go on show. Fashion designers Bernhard Willhelm and Jutta Kraus are the first guest curators. à Tues-Sun from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (May and August), 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. (June and July), 10 a.m.-7 p.m. (September) Free admission Middelheimlaan 61, 2020 Antwerp I www.middelheimmuseum.be c
