23.03 - 30.06.2013 [to be confirmed]
Following the construction of Het Huis and Hortiflora Middelheim Museum’s exhibition facilities have been significantly expanded. The Braem Pavilion can once again be used for the purpose for which it was originally built: to exhibit fragile collection pieces. For this exhibition the museum has chosen to display Vic Gentils’s chess board, a monumental installation with 32 special pieces.

Balthasar I Moretus commissioned twenty portraits from Rubens, of family members as well as of friends of the Plantin family. In a sense Rubens was the family’s ‘court’ painter. Balthasar II Moretus continued the tradition, probably appointing Jacob van Reesbroeck (1620-1704) as the family’s preferred painter.

RUBENS’ HoUSe
Rubens was a great artist as well as an intriguing theorist. His opinions on art theory, which he jotted down in his art theory notebook, have never been examined and highlighted in full. The original manuscript (1600-1635) perished in 1720 in a fire. Visitors are introduced to Rubens’ surprising ideas about the anatomy and the proportions of the human body, symmetry and perspective, using four partial copies of this notebook.

RED STAR LINE MUSEUM
From 1800 onwards millions of people packed their effects in a few suitcases and took the boat from Europe to America. The new world was the promised land for those in search of happiness and a better life. For many people the voyage to the United States and Canada started in a port shed in Antwerp. Between 1873 and 1934 over two million migrants and fortune-seekers were ferried back and forth by the Red Star Line’s ocean liners. The Red Star Line Museum will open on 27 September 2013 in the historic sheds of the Red Star Line. In lieu of a ribbon-cutting ceremony the city is organising a three-day mass event near the museum.
