shopping paradise
THIS COULD BE HEAVEN...
Antwerp is widely known as a fashion city and a shopping paradise. This is absolutely true. You will not be disappointed. We have an ideal plan for those of you who only have one day to go shopping. If you have more time, just pick a neighbourhood and discover it slowly yet instinctively. Antwerp is a creative shopping city in which you can easily wander without getting lost and everything is only a stone’s throw away. Every neighbourhood has its own character but is still a part of the entity. Antwerp offers something for everybody.
Noord We pertly start in ‘Noord’ (North). This neighbourhood is popular and lively. You can shop on Carnotstraat, Offerandestraat and on the Turnhoutsebaan. All the stores sell cheaper versions of what you’ll find on the Meir. Many young people live here and they like the ‘less is okay’-principle. Apart from that ‘Noord’ is simply a hip place to be. The modern Designcenter | De Winkelhaak can be found where the Offerandestraat meets the Lange Winkelhaakstraat. This is a place where design, architecture, multimedia and graphic design encounter each other. The centre is alive and kicking. The small design shops with nice items are definitely worth a visit and Bar d’Office is a good place for a cup of coffee. Nearly opposite the Designcenter you can find Atelier Solarshop. This is also a place where a lot can happen. For the audience it’s mainly a gallery where young artists and designers regularly sell or exhibit their art. It’s always interesting to check what’s available. We leave ‘Noord’ and head for the Meir, quite a contrast indeed.
Meir
Quartier Latin
This pedestrians-only boulevard rents its magnificent shopping premises to the big European chains. Here you’ll find H&M, Zara, Mango, Sfera, Bershka, Pull and Bear, River Island, Hema, P&C and many more. The boulevard runs through beautiful 18th & 19th century buildings so don’t be afraid to look up and admire them. The renovated historical architecture will leave you flabbergasted.
The Leopoldstraat, the Schuttershofstraat and Hopland form the Quartier Latin. This is not a genuine Antwerp name but was given to the neighbourhood comparing the luxurious streets to those of other major cities. Some ‘expensive’ names can be found in Quartier Latin: Essentiel, Burberry, Mer du Nord and Ralph Lauren prank next to each other.
The Stadsfeestzaal is a renovated neoclassical building from 1908. The former function hall is now a beautiful shopping centre on the Meir with stores such as COS, Urban Outfitters, women’secret and Wo_Men_At_Work. You can also discover nice things on the Meir’s side streets. Think Twice on the Lange Klarenstraat is one of many T2 stores in Antwerp. They sell second hand clothing and have a good, substantial and trendy collection. Basta is a hidden gem on the Twaalfmaandenstraat. This big store sells multiple Spanish brands. At the Wapper you have reached the halfway point of the Meir. Sit down at the fountain with the fishing eagle and enjoy the passers-by. Behind the Wapper, parallel to the Meir, is the beginning of the Quartier Latin. You can choose to continue following the Meir or you can opt for the Quartier Latin.
6
This is also the theatre district. The big theatre companies all have their theatres here and the surrounding bars, all the way to the Mechelseplein, are packed with atmosphere. On Saturday and Sunday there’s a market on the Theaterplein. On Sunday morning the Vogelenmarkt is the favourite market of many locals. On the square you can enjoy a delicious coffee at Barnini and a tasty meal at Lunchbox.
shopping paradise
The botanical garden in the Leopoldstraat is the biggest hidden treasure of this neighbourhood. It is small but without doubt the cutest ever. The Huidevettersstraat separates the Wilde Zee from Quartier Latin. There you can relax and take a look at the price tags without worrying. It is tempting to buy the entire collection of Petit Bateau. The cotton underwear, the shirts, t-shirts, dresses and sweaters are not just for kids. The colourful and simple basics are real must haves. The end of the Huidevettersstraat gives way to the Wilde Zee.
Wilde Zee The Wilde Zee is a romantic name for 5 incredibly charming pedestrians-only streets. These five are centred round a nice little city square. The terrace of Lombardia has claimed the square and it’s an ideal lunch spot, just like any other salad or fruit bar in this neighbourhood. Your shopping options are diverse: from make-up, design, gifts, delicacies, chocolate, small boutiques, shoes, delicious ice cream and exclusive stores to the best fresh fish in the city. This place has it all: from basic to posh and from casual to trendy. A few examples are Mac Cosmetics, Kiehl’s, Sasha, Iittala, Rituals, APC, Sienna Boutique and Superdry Store. You can reach the historic centre or the fashion district via the Wilde Zee.
Historic centre Groenplaats, Grote Markt, Consciensceplein, Vrijdagmarkt, Melkmarkt, Hoogstraat and Kloosterstraat are places that you just have to see. It’s a great neighbourhood but there are not that many stores. On a rainy day you can find comfort in the Grand Bazar Shoppingcentrum, though. There are about fifty stores, such as women’secret, Fnac, Mango, Bodyshop en Accessorize. You can also do your groceries and drink a delicious juice. Every Friday there’s a market on the Vrijdagmarkt. It is really one of a kind. The market is a sort of auction where the items are sold by bidding loudly. There are quite a few nice second hand stores as well, such as My Ohm.
Eye-catchers on the Melkmarkt are jewellery store Jozefien, the kitschy shops Akotee and Akotwee and the International Magazine store with a trendy record store on the upper floor, Tune Up. The Melkmarkt leads to the Lange Koepoortstraat, which is the place to get a tattoo at Wildcat. It’s also great if you want to buy records. Fat Kat is the modern record store and right across is Record Collector, where the collectors can find any old LP. On this street, next to some good and cheap second hand stores, you will find Paleis. This is a big store that offers a lot of different young brands. Antwerp also has a few trendy bicycle stores. Fixerati on the Lange Koepoortstraat is one of the best. In between the Minderbroedersrui and the Melkmarkt you can find the Conscienceplein. You could blindfold someone, bring them to this place and while removing the blindfold fool them by telling them they’re in Italy. It is delightful to buy yourself an ice cream and enjoy it in the shadow of the magnificent Carolus Borromeus church. You can return via the Grote Markt, the Brabo fountain is definitely worth a photo stop, and from there on it’s easy to continue to the Hoogstraat and the Kloosterstraat for some more shopping. The Hoogstraat has a lot of small shops in which you will find all sorts of interesting items. You can buy books, clothes, gadgets
8
and there are a few restaurants and bars in the street as well. The Steenhouwersvest offers more of this. Episode is, apart from T2, the biggest and coolest second hand store. It is the ideal place to find an outfit for a fancy dress party. Every Sunday there is an enjoyable antique market on the SintJansvliet square between the Hoogstraat and the Kloosterstraat. The square is right in front of the pedestrian underpass. It might sound awkward but it’s actually quite romantic to use the escalators to go down to the tunnel, walk under the Scheldt and see the city from the left bank of the river. This tunnel is the favourite place of many locals and the view from the other side is breathtaking. On the way from here to ‘Zuid’ (the South), the Scheldt is always near.
shopping paradise
The Kloosterstraat is where all the antique shops are located. This is a neighbourhood which invites you to stroll and get inspired. Sometimes you can grab a fantastic furniture bargain. You also definitely have to visit Ra 13. This is a new concept store with a book shop and a very beautiful restaurant. Apparently it is the place to meet young, talented artists. It might be interesting to know that shops in both Hoogstraat and Kloosterstraat are open on Sundays as well.
The Nationalestraat also has two new, young and budget friendly stars. Jutka & Riska offers selective and original second hand items and Lila Grace is a stylish boutique.
Fashion district
From the fashion district you automatically end up in ‘Zuid’.
If you feel young and hip, you should check out the Kammenstraat. This is Antwerp’s trendiest street with stores like American Apparel, Fish and Chips, Zappa, a.puur.a, Lee Cooper, Diesel, Who’s That Girl and Levi’s.
It is no coincidence that Antwerp prides itself with the title of fashion city, many famous and acclaimed designers originate from here. You can immerse yourself in the authentic Belgian fashion atmosphere on the Nationalestraat. The Flanders Fashion Institute, the Fashion Museum (MoMu), the fashion department of the academy and the Copyright Bookshop can all be found in the ModeNatie. Take a look inside because this is the fashion heart which shines on the rest of the city. The stores of Dries Van Noten, Anna Heylen and Walter van Beirendonck are close to the Nationalestraat. These stores are very inspiring but if you want to actually purchase something it’s best to wait for the designers’ stock sales. At Labels Inc., just around the corner on the Aalmoezenierstraat, you can find a second hand collection of the aforementioned and other designers.
9
We end our day in the South district. The Volksstraat offers us a few special treats before we sit down for a decent show-off. Baby Beluga always has clothing items that will make you dream. Steen and Been offers alternative souvenirs, made of stone or bone.
The Burburestraat has two remarkable shops: Clinic and Hospital. They are practically brother and sister. Both are big and sell a lot of different brands. They offer clothing, gadgets, accessories, shoes and magazines. If you like to spend a bit more on hip brands, this is the place to visit. Closer to the Leopold de Waelplaats the shops give way to restaurants, bars, museums and galleries. It is nice to relax on the steps of the KMSKA | Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. This
10
rich and hip neighbourhood is ideal for a bit of people spotting. To the right of the museum you’ll find some petanque courts and it’s extremely trendy to be seen while casually playing this game. You’ve probably understood that seeing and being seen is the main activity in ‘Zuid’.
...............................................................
This is only a short introduction into Antwerp as a shopping paradise. You’ll probably discover more hidden gems on your way. And ‘been there done that’ does not count in this city. Antwerp is always in motion. There’s no place where stores and trends come and go as quickly as they do here.

Tune Up
MUSIC ART COFFEE Slightly hidden above the International Magazine Store on the Melkmarkt is the record store Tune Up. Make sure to pop by. This place is a paradise for both the diehard record collector and the newcomer or lover looking for a unique present. Forget the obscure store filled with records and a freaky, staring owner. It is a big, open space filled with vinyl, two walking musical encyclopedias, seats, coffee and a terrapin.
vinyl records. Freaks indeed! But they are sweet as sugar. Their mission is to spread their love and passion for music and LPs. You can ask them anything. The seats and chairs are at your disposal and coffee (or something else) can easily be prepared.
‘Buy a lot and the coffee is on the house’ As the owners would like to reach a diverse audience, the stairs that lead to the store should be the only ‘vinyl’ threshold. Occasionally, their longest wall is used as an exhibition wall for young and renowned artists. No exhibition without an opening party. Every now and then, the records are also put aside for live gigs.
‘An independent record store is not necessarily a small business. We dare to be ambitious.’ The LPs, mostly second hand, are US imports of all styles. The four main genres are jazz, soul & funk, 60’s/ 70’s rock and 80’s/ 90’s pop & wave. You can already get a record for 8 euro and it is guaranteed scratch free. The limited editions and collector’s items are obviously a bit more expensive. Find your way through the neatly arranged collections or tell storekeepers Michel and Carlo what you’re looking for. Each of them owns about 10.000

Antwerp, European Youth Capital in 2011 Why is Antwerp European Youth Capital 2011? Maybe because one third of its citizens is younger than 25? Perhaps because it’s the second largest student city in Belgium? Or is it because Antwerp thrives on young people? Whatever the reason may be, with over 150 events, Antwerp is a worthy successor to Turin and Rotterdam.
Ready to party? For the right dose of music, Laundry Day and Groovez Festival will serve your needs. On Saturday 18 June, Groovez Festival is settling itself on the Sint-Andriesplaats and brings to you: various workshops, animation for children and certainly live music. A mix of hip hop, reggae and world music will make your day. Following bands already confirmed their gigs: Antwerp kids, Wawasda, Dju Lion & Cashflow, Onesty and aka Koxx from Paris. Laundry Day, Belgian’s greatest dance festival awaits you in Antwerp South on 3 September: 3 stages, more than 200 deejays
and live bands, all in all a crazy line-up: how about BASEMENT JAXX?? Lots of laundry classics, but also lots of new talent.
But there’s much more! Visit Antwerp’s finest museums at night, at the Thursday Evenings at the Museum. Feel like shaking your body to the tunes of a DJ on a balcony? Or rather on an art piece? Dancing with Wiis ? Reinventing a work of a famous painter in graffiti? A funky fresh folk dance initiation? Mysterious basement parties? Or more? Then ‘The Thursday Evenings at the Museum’ definitely are your cup of tea. Every last Thursday evening of the month. When the weather is good, meet your friends at Het Steen, where a stone terrace with a lovely view at the riverside will offer anything you need. In September, Antwerp Street Kicks is the event for everybody into urban and extreme sports. Check out http://www.aeyc2011.be/en for all details, tickets and places.

GO LOCAL! A (long) day according to Timothy Timothy (22 years old) is an expressive character. His hobby is graffiti and his passion is painting. The underground magazine CrankNozem is his way to offer a platform for all opinions. He talks quietly but passionately and his paint-stained hands guide his story. So where can you find this inspiring person?
22
Smossing and shopping Timothy eats breakfast at the Diksmuidse Boterkoeken in the basement of the Grand Bazar Shopping Center. According to him, this place serves the best ‘smos’ because you’re stuffed after one. (A ‘smos’ is a sandwich with cheese, ham, vegetables and mayonnaise. ‘Smossen’ is Dutch and means ‘making a mess’, yes indeed!)
‘In Antwerp you will occasionally find guerilla galleries such as a painted electricity cabin with a tent in front of it.’ Shopping is not quite Timothy’s favourite pastime activity. If he needs clothes, he usually finds them at Think Twice on the Lange Klarenstraat or Kammenstraat or at United Brands on the Meir. Think Twice is a popular store with inexpensive and hip clothes and they have different stores in the centre of Antwerp. Once in a while they go crazy and sell vintage ski suits, knitted sweaters and more for one euro. No kid-
go local
ding. And United Brands? Well, they have different sport and street wear brands. But Timothy prefers to spend his money on magazines, books, CD’s, DVD’s, painting material and spray cans.
Become a pro The Artifex sells spray cans and graffiti magazines. It’s the place to be if you have any graffiti questions or if you want to take a workshop. Become a pro! In the Kammenstraat you will also find Fish&Chips. The store offers a wide variety of brands and sneakers. And if you buy ten spray cans you get one for free! Timothy advises everyone to visit De Slegte at the Wapper for books. In this huge store it is easy to get lost between the second hand and antiquarian books about any imaginable topic. If you’re not on a tight book budget you can also enter the Copyright at your own risk. You will not leave the store without at least one purchase, such as a book about contemporary art, architecture, design or something similar.
The favourite record stores are also divided between second hand and brand new. Bargains can be found at the independent record store Fatkat. It is brimming with CDs and vinyl, usually non-mainstream. If Timothy is looking for regular genres he will go to Fnac. This multimedia store has an incredible amount of books, CDs and DVDs. ‘An incredible amount’ also fits when describing the International Magazine Store on the Meir. They offer international magazines about graffiti, art and design and every other topic you can think of. Timothy’s number one spot is Belgium’s oldest chemist’s shop. In de balans has been selling art, painting and restoration products for 150 years. Their advice is priceless. Old yet friendly people will passionately answer all your questions.
For a quick lunch in the centre, Timothy likes Paters Vaetje in the shadows of the cathedral. The menu is small (soup, sandwiches, snacks and a daily special) but it’s good and affordable. The danger lies in the extensive beer list. There are more than one hundred Belgian beers! Don’t forget to check the percentage of alcohol because it is often higher than expected.
‘Barbecuing with friends near the water while the sun sets, who wouldn’t want to take a bite of that?’ 23
The quays: seven kilometres of sunshine On the first summer day of the year, Timothy shows us his favourite places. Needless to say that the amount of sunny chill-out spots is disproportionally large. In Antwerp, people love the sun. Everyone sits outside or in a summer bar with a cold beer. Antwerp also has fantastic squares, parks, water banks, benches and porches where young people gather with their drinks. The hangars on the quays provide the industrial look and are an ideal shelter during the hot summer days. The Zomer van Antwerpen plays open air movies in here as well. Timothy’s favourite spot is the Rijnkaai area. He claims that it is officially ‘the most beautiful place in Antwerp’. He and his friends are attracted by the panoramic view and the amazing sunset. If you move inwards you will pass the Dokken and the new museum MAS | Museum aan de Stroom. A little bit further we find Park Spoor Noord, a wide park which the multicultural locals and the rest of the city’s inhabitants like to visit for its summer bar,
its green grass, its water playground or its skate park. Timothy passes by at least every two months, when he is on his way to selling his own magazine CrankNozem on the creative market ‘Beparkte Oplage’.
‘Actually the quays are one big hotspot’ Follow the quays southwards and at the halfway point you reach Sint-Jansvliet. People are always playing basketball here, Timothy’s favourite sport. After practicing some alley-oops, take a look at the pedestrian underpass. Walk under the water to the other side of the river and admire Antwerp’s skyline.
Museums and galleries Via the Scheldestraat you will reach ‘Zuid’ (the South). This is where art lovers feel at home. The M HKA displays its international collection of contemporary art, from the 1970’s until now, in a reconstructed silo. Every once in a while Timothy works
in the museum and he recommends the free tours, every Sunday at 2 pm. Cultural savages can still enjoy themselves on the amazing roof terrace with a view of ‘Zuid’.

‘Graffiti is a hobby in which the social aspect is very important. Painting is a passion that requires solitude and thinking about nobody but myself.’ The KMSKA is The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. It has been here for 150 years but is temporarily closed until 2017 due to renovation works. The stairs, bizarre fountains and petanque fields are still open because the locals like to hang out here during the summer. The Fotomuseum, loved by Timothy because of its ancient cameras and exhibitions, is nearby. Apart from the grand museums, ‘Zuid’ also has a number of smaller and bigger galleries to offer. Every sixth Thursday evening, they are open from 6 pm until 9 pm. Enjoy the works of renowned artists and emerging talents while having a glass of wine. Zeno X is one of the more influential and important galleries in ‘Zuid’ and features works by artists such as Raoul De Keyzer,
Anne-Mie Van Kerkhoven and Dirk Braeckman. At Maes & Matthys you will always find a few surprises by the likes of Michiel Ceulers and Vaast Colson. Kati Heck and Dennis Tyfus, both of whom like to approach images in a playful manner, can be found at Stella Lohaus. And then there’s Tim Van Laere’s gallery, which usually offers something very surprising.
Go out in the south ‘Zuid’ is Timothy’s natural habitat. According to him you can find the best Antwerp pita in this neighbourhood. ‘Muradim’ offers copious meals for a few euros. His favourite is the pita with Gouda cheese. After a meal we are ready to paint the town red.
‘Muradim’s pitas: so big that you’ll have to stuff yourself or throw half of them away’ Boogaloo sees itself as a natural mix between a vintage bar and a Mediterranean
‘cantina’. A pint, a cocktail, a toasted sandwich and vinyl party music, this place has it all. Timothy can usually be found on the first floor where he can shoot pool. If we move further south we discover the slightly hidden but extremely popular parties at Petrol or at Scheld’Apen on the D’Herbouvillekaai. Timothy likes to come here on reggae or dancehall nights. If you want to end your night out chatting with a trappist beer by your side, you can do so until four o’ clock at Chatleroi, a trendy local pub. Cheers or pleasant dreams!

parking lot Decathlon, Noorderlaan 53) and Sunday afternoon from 1 pm (Berkenveldplein Wilrijk). Bikes and beers are mandatory, helmets optional. (not on the map)

This square once housed Antwerp’s first legal graffiti wall. The principal gave the school wall to the writers around 1985. This stopped when someone sprayed over Mary’s feet. The nuns across the street then gave the wall to two artists. Now, the latest version dates from 1999 and is by Zenith who is currently a known (and quite handsome) Flemish actor.

Study in Antwerp.
Antwerpen Studentenstad, in the House of the Student Next to all sorts of practical and day-to-day information, we also aimed at providing you with up-to-date information on places you should definitely visit. Without popping in to some of the pubs, eateries, clubs or cultural centres mentioned in our City Guide for Students, your stay in Antwerp simply wouldn’t be complete. The latter is a matter of opinion of course, but the justification for this info, next to its intended audience, is very much its editorial staff. Composed of students of the Antwerp University Association, the staff took pains to come up with a balanced selection of highlights: from the most well-known club in Antwerp to the hidden gems in quiet, cobbled streets - they turned Antwerp upside down. The goal: to come up with info that will please the most critical native ‘Sinjoor’ as well as the newly-arrived foreign student. The City Guide for Students is available in the ‘Huis van de Student’ (Student House), the flagshipstore of the agency Ant-

Vera, student in Antwerp Name: Vera Georgieva Country: Bulgaria Age: 21 Field of study: Political sciences I‘m from Sofia (the capital of Bulgaria), so I’m used to living in a bigger city, where I can have it all: sightseeing, studying, working, meeting different people and of course: having fun. If you’re a fashionista and are eager to buy the newest and most beautiful clothes, shoes, bags, … – this is the place to visit.
If you want to meet and befriend new people of different nationalities, religions, ethnic and cultural belonging, if you want to be part of a multicultural society– this is the place to visit.
