Thousands of years ago, the area was covered by glaciers whose retreat formed what we know today as the Great Lakes. The rich and fertile soil left behind, paired with the area’s unique micro-climate, creates conditions ideal for growing grapes. Slopes and valleys move air and drain water, allowing the flavors in the fruit to develop without being diluted. Warm sunny days and cool nights extending into the fall stretch the growing season long enough to give winemakers the perfect fruit.

Located just five miles from the beautiful shores of Lake Erie in northeast Ohio, you’ll find the gently rolling hills of the Grand River Valley. The countryside is dotted with over 30 wineries and row after row of lush vineyards. In fact, there are more wineries here per square mile than in any other region.

This vibrant and expanding vineyard region is responsible for over 50% of the grapes grown in the state of Ohio. Though grape stomping still takes place at the annual Grape Jamboree Festival, the fruit is highly respected in the

Grand River Valley. It is no longer a place where the native Concord and Niagara grapes rule. Ohio is cultivating some of the best Pinot, Cabernet, Riesling, and Vidal in the country. It is a place where the arts and sciences collide as wine farmers and vintners collaborate over barrels in the cool cellars.

Guests are delighted to discover awardwinning estate wines and numerous boutique wineries. Difficulty often lies in deciding where to share a glass: along the waterfront, in a century-old church, or on a sprawling patio under the stars. They find unique culinary experiences to accompany every good bottle and live music on each calendar.

The Grand River Valley was designated an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1983.

Grape varieties suited best for the climate include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Merlot, in addition to Franco-American hybrids such as Chambourcin, Vidal Blanc and Traminette.

From Vine to Wine

On the ridge of the Grand River, visitors will find rolling acres of manicured vineyards. Sunny fall days release the sweet smell of ripening grapes. The delicious scent hangs heavy in the air and locals drive with their windows down, breathing deep.

Fresh-pressed grape juice is unlike anything you’ve tasted and is only available for a window of time.

The wineries are very handson. Guests are often served or given a tour of the cellar by owners, their family, and friends.

Visitors can participate in a robust calendar of events 12 months a year. In the winter, curl up by a cozy fire while you listen to live music.

Most impressive about these wineries is their lack of pretense. Come as you are: dressed up or dressed down. Drink what you like: sweet or dry. There is a camaraderie and sense of pride amongst these neighbors who invite guests to sip their passion. Let them know what you enjoy and they will be happy to help you make your selection.

Wine Tasting Tips

See – check out the color and clarity of the wine by tilting your glass against a white or light-colored table or paper.

Swirl – swirling the wine “wakes it up.” It has been stuck in the bottle for a while, and swirling opens the wine up. It gets more oxygen in to further release the flavors and aromas.

Sniff – the best way to smell is by taking a series of short, quick inhalations.

Sip – take a small sip in your mouth, swirl it around a bit to cover your entire palate, then swallow. This gets wine on different parts of your tongue to get your taste buds working.

Cask Collab

The Grand River Valley lies along the International Pinot Belt (a narrow band of latitude that stretches from France to Oregon) where many great Pinots are grown. Pinot Gris is a cool-climate grape – which works perfectly with our growing conditions. It ripens early enough in the season for good ‘hang time’ so grapes can reach their fullest maturity. Winemakers love to work with it in their cellars as the wine can be made into a wide range of styles: dry with a hint of oak in the French style (Gris) or with no oak and a touch of sweetness in the Italian style (Grigio).

The cask project began as an idea in 2010 to have a continual red blend from the Grand River Valley. Each year a percentage of the wine is bottled and sold to make room for the next year’s harvest. The date on the bottle represents the year it began “10” and the year it was bottled “23.” Each winery uses a different 500 gallon oak barrel from different countries and fills it with vinifera grapes from their farm.

Midweek is typically less busy at local wineries, and overnight hotel rates are lower as well.

The Ferrante Family has over 85 years of rich winery history. The family has been producing nationally and internationally acclaimed wines since 1937 when they opened their first winery in Cleveland’s Collinwood area. In the 1970s Peter (Papa) Ferrante built a state-of-the-art winemaking facility in the family’s Harpersfield Township vineyard.

Pete (Papa) Ferrante & his wife Josephine (Mama) Ferrante created a legacy that now 5 of their 8 children are continuing to honor. Anthony Ferrante manages 40 acres of manicured vineyards, and Winemaker Nick Ferrante continually experiments with new innovative technology/techniques to keep his wines cutting edge.

With over 60 acres of manicured vineyards, Nick and his team specialize in the agriculture of Vinifera & French American Hybrid style grapes including Gewurztraminer, Riesling,

Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gruner Veltliner, Vidal Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Dolcetto, and many others. Truly a grape to glass experience!

In the Ristorante, sisters Carmel and Mary Jo Ferrante along with the entire extended Ferrante family and staff provide the ultimate dining experience.

The full-service restaurant incorporates the Ferrante Family’s Italian traditions with an elevated twist. A hearty rich lasagna featuring Mama Jo’s homemade renowned sauce will certainly not disappoint. Looking for something less traditional? Be sure to indulge in Ferrante favorites such as Gnocchi Brue: filet mignon, potato gnocchi, gorgonzola crumbles, mushrooms, and onions in a rich wine demi-glacé. No matter what you decide these Italian-inspired dishes are paired perfectly with the Ferrante wines.

Family Bonding

Share in the traditions of the generations of winemakers in the Grand River Valley.

Debonné Vineyards was established during the third generation of the Debevc family’s viticulture history. Anton Debevc, a 1914 immigrant from the Slovenian State of Yugoslavia, purchased a general fruit farm in Madison, Ohio in 1916. Anton’s son, Tony Sr., helped expand the vineyard in the late 1960s. In 1971, Tony Sr. and his son, Tony, began their journey as commercial winemakers, establishing world-class standards in the Lake Erie and Grand River Valley regions. Debonne Vineyards was founded as a winery in 1972 with the construction of a winemaking facility and a charming Chalet.

The Ferrante Family has been producing nationally and internationally acclaimed wines since 1937, when they opened their first winery in Cleveland’s Collinwood area. The Esterer family is continuing their father Arnie’s legacy at Markko Vineyards. Arnie was the first winemaker in the Ashtabula County region, and studied under the late Dr. Konstantin Frank, a well-known viticulturist and winery owner who promoted the vinifera varieties in the Finger Lakes area in New York and other areas along the East Coast throughout the 1960s and into the early 1980s.

At the Winery at Spring Hill, Tom Swank is the third generation owner making wines and ciders, while his sister, Cindy, makes delectable creations in the bakery.

The Debevc family has a long tradition in the Grand River Valley wine region. Tony Debevc and his father started Debonne Vineyards back in 1972. Ohio’s largest estate winery is known for its beautiful, organic scenery of rolling hills filled with acres and acres of grapevines. The winery itself features a large selection of wines as well as appetizers and sandwiches. Keeping the family tradition alive, Tony Jr. joined the team at Debonne in 2008 and started a brewery that is now known as Double Wing Brewing Company to commemorate his father’s love of flying.

In 2004, Tony and Beth Debevc teamed up with life-long friends, Cindy and Jeff Lindberg and purchased one of the original wineries in the region that fell upon hard times. Grand River

Cellars Winery & Restaurant opened its doors as a supper club featuring live entertainment and a large lunch and dinner menu to accompany the quality wines produced from the region.

In 2019, Tony and Beth decided to build a new addition to the Grand River Valley wine region and Cask 307 was born. This new facility was built on a need to educate the consumer on regional wines and to be the gateway to the valley. This winery features unique regional wines, specialty craft beers made specifically for them by Double Wing Brewing Co., and specialty cheese plates and light fare.

Ice wine: how sweet it is

Ice wine is a specialty available in very few places around the country. Typically made from Vidal Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Riesling or Cabernet Franc, these grapes are harvested while frozen. The longer a grape stays on the vine, the greater the residual sugar content. Each frozen grape only yields 2-3 drops of juice! It is not uncommon to see grapes being picked at midnight with headlamps and flashlights. The result is a very sweet dessert wine. The annual ice wine festival is held each March with ice carving demonstrations, wine marshmallows around the fire and live music.

Feel the Lake Effect

Ashtabula County is tucked in Ohio’s most northeast corner, known locally as the heart of the snowbelt. Here, lake effect snow is a common occurrence. This phenomenon occurs in only a handful of places around the world. When freezing cold air moves across the open waters of Lake Erie, it picks up moisture and accumulates, typically falling in large amounts as it hits land. These bouts of heavy snow showers regularly create winter wonderlands throughout the region.

Lakefronts sparkle with icy wave sculptures and rolling vineyards appear to be covered in a blanket of white. Winemakers are busy tending barrels and tanks in the cellars. Wineries stoke toasty fires and pull extra seats around the fireplaces, both indoor and out. Guests can even find an igloo to relax in for dinner! Midweek is always the best time to beat the crowds. Lodging costs are low and availability is high. Live music and entertainment are still abundant on the weekends.

Winter in the Grand River Valley is a special season. If you’ve not embraced a snowy visit, it’s time.

The region may be known for a bustling winery district, but Ashtabula County is producing more than award-winning vino. Craft beer drinkers and connoisseurs of fine spirits have come to delight in the area’s creative cocktails and more.

Red Eagle Distillery is an unexpected delight on a winding road lined with wineries and vineyards. Housed in a red barn from the 1800s with original interior, the owners pay homage to age-old stories of locals stilling spirits in barns during prohibition. Bourbon, rye, brandy and vodka are produced on-site and star in cocktails such as “Cherry Buckaroo” and “Peanut Butter Cup.”



Debonné Vineyards was the first winery in Ohio to open a microbrewery: Double Wing Brewing Company, serving and distributing award-winning beers.

Seven Brothers Distilling utilizes an innovative low-temperature distilling process that captures delicate flavors and produces inspiring results using all natural ingredients.

Three Sips Brewing specializes in making mead (honey wine) and hard cider. They utilize ingredients from local farms in their production process, resulting in delicious flavors like apple pie and peach.

The Winery at Spring Hill produces ice cider. The “frosted apple” is as unique as the “frosted raspberry” dessert wine sold alongside a half dozen hard cider flavors produced on-site.

Cloven Hoof Brewing is the area’s microbrewery in the Historic Ashtabula Harbor. Crafting brews ranging from sours to IPAs and lagers, Cloven Hoof regularly collaborates with neighboring businesses to create unique brews only available at those establishments.

Housed in a former photography studio, Dark Room Brewing Company will open in 2023 in downtown Geneva and will provide a unique craft beer experience.

Looking for a non-alcoholic treat? Grab a bottle of grape juice at Ferrante or splurge on an old-fashioned Richardson’s Root Beer float at White Turkey Drive-In. Caffeine lovers rejoice at Harbor Perk in the Ashtabula Harbor where there is no shortage of coffee-inspired creations.

Coffee beans from Harbor Perk blended with vanilla beans in a blonde ale is on tap as Bean Baptism at Cloven Hoof Brewing.

Roasted FlatbreadGrape

with local roasted grapes, Ohio honey, fresh herbs, and Havarti.

Serves 4 - Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

1 cup Ohio Grapes, Concord preferred

1 pizza dough or flatbread, rolled out

1 T olive oil

2 cups Havarti, shredded ¼ cup Ohio honey

¼ cup fresh herbs, chopped: parsley, sage, and basil are best salt to taste

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 425. On a baking sheet lined with parchment, arrange grapes and toss with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. Bake for 10 minutes until grapes have softened and are just bursting.

2. On another baking sheet, roll out your dough or flatbread, and sprinkle with the shredded Havarti. Bake for 25 minutes, until golden brown and melted.

3. Once the flatbread has baked, top with the roasted grapes, drizzle with honey and sprinkle with fresh herbs. Season with salt one more time and serve warm. This is a great appetizer or pairs well with a tossed salad for an entrée. Enjoy!

Suggested Wine Pairing South River Vineyards Karma

Maple Roasted Apple & Brie Crostini

with local brie and maple roasted Ohio apple compote with thyme and sea salt.

Serves 4 - Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

1 baguette, sliced into rounds

1 Ohio Apple, small diced

¼ cup Ohio Maple Syrup

1 T fresh thyme

1 tsp sea salt

1 wheel brie

Directions

1. In a small sauce pan, combine apples, maple syrup, and thyme. Bring to a simmer, for 10 minutes until apples have softened. Stir in salt and remove from heat to cool slightly.

2. Preheat oven to 400 and arrange sliced baguette on baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes, until golden brown.

3. Slice brie into small bite size pieces and place one slice on each crostini.

4. Top each crostini with a spoonful of the maple apple mixture, drizzling all leftover syrup over the top. Sprinkle with any additional herbs and salt you may want and enjoy.

Pan Seared Walleye

with fresh tomato & grilled corn salsa over creamy Ohio Corn Polenta

Serves 2 - Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients

2 Lake Erie Walleye filets

1 cup Ohio corn polenta

4 cups chicken or vegetable stock

1 ear Ohio corn

1 cup Ohio tomatoes

½ cup fresh herbs: cilantro or parsley are best

3 T butter

3 T olive oil salt to taste

Directions

1. In a pot that has a lid, bring 4 cups of water to a boil with a heavy pinch of salt. Once liquid is bubbling, reduce heat to medium and whisk in the polenta, continuously stirring until all is combined. Turn the heat to low, and cover for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once polenta has softened and cooked through, remove from heat and stir in 2 tablespoons of butter.

2. While the polenta is cooking, char corn over gas range, on a grill, or broil in the oven, just until kernels form some golden-brown color. Remove from heat, cool to the touch, then cut the kernels from the cob. Dice the tomatoes and chop the herbs. Combine corn, tomatoes, herbs, and a sprinkle of salt, and set aside.

3. In a nonstick skillet, add the final tablespoon of butter and 2 tablespoons of oil. Bring pan to medium-high heat. Pat fish filets dry with a paper towel and season well with salt. Place the fish skin side down in the butter and oil, and allow the first side to cook 3 minutes, then flip.

4. In a large serving bowl, dollop the polenta on the bottom of the plate, topping with the walleye, and spooning some of the salsa over the top. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. Enjoy!

Grab a coffee at Harbor Perk in the Historic Ashtabula Harbor and set off to explore the Ashtabula Maritime Museum.

Spend the afternoon on the Ashtabula County Covered Bridge Trail. You don’t want to miss the Smolen-Gulf Covered Bridge, the longest in the US. Ashtabula County is considered the covered bridge capital of the state and is home to 19 of these unique structures. Some look upon these engineering feats and appreciate the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the builders. Others are in awe of the simple beauty of the historic structure as part of the landscape: magical and colorful crossings set against the area’s rolling hills and vineyards. Covered bridges offer a one-of-akind look at a bygone era.

Many ask why the bridges are covered. It has been speculated that the purpose was to provide shelter during inclement weather or to prevent horses from being afraid of crossing the water. The real reason is to protect the structure supporting the bridge. Without protection from the elements, the wooden timbers supporting the bridge would decay and eventually collapse. By keeping them dry, the bridges last much longer.

The earliest documented covered bridge structures remaining in the area date back to 1867 (Mechanicsville and Windsor Mills) and 1868 (Root, Middle, and Harpersfield), but not all are over a century old. Ashtabula County boasts the construction of a bridge as recently as 2016: Riverview pedestrian bridge, which is located under Smolen-Gulf. The longest covered bridge in the United States is the Smolen-Gulf bridge at a length of 613 feet. Built in 2008, it has a life expectancy of 100 years. Also found in northeast Ohio is America’s shortest drive-through bridge: Liberty Street. Of Ashtabula’s 19 bridges, 17 are still operational, allowing vehicle traffic through year-round.

History Lesson

The port of the Historic Ashtabula Harbor is home to a colorful history. The Ashtabula Harbor was considered a major stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War where slaves once boarded ships to freedom across Lake Erie on their way to Canada. In its early days it was one of the busiest ports in the world, employing immigrants from many European nations.

Some of the people you may meet during your travels around Ashtabula County have deep roots in our area. Some have spent time living and working in other parts of the world, but have returned home to start businesses and give back to their hometowns. Others have called Ashtabula County home for a lifetime. Get to know our “Faces of the Places” while you’re visiting.

Jenny and Gunar Luhta Harbor Halcyon

When Gunar and Jenny Luhta decided to put down roots for their family, the decision to return home was an easy one. Gunar’s great grandparents immigrated from Finland and settled in the Ashtabula Harbor area. He grew up playing on Lake Erie waters and made a career captaining ships.

Early in their marriage, Gunar & Jenny lived on a sailboat. They raised their babies on the seas, settling in places like Saint Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. When returning landside to care for family, the Luhta’s jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the rebirth happening on Bridge Street. In 2017 they opened Harbor Halcyon, a community gathering spot with friendly service and delicious food and drinks. Halcyon embodies the warm welcome that they experienced in their travels and has quickly become a local favorite.

Melody grew up in Ashtabula and moved to Colorado for a number of years until recently moving back to her hometown. Her passion for living a healthy lifestyle prompted her to buy Blended Smoothies in the Historic Ashtabula Harbor in 2022 and share options for healthy meals on the go.

Bill Holden Buccia Winery and B&B

Bill grew up in the rural farming community of Pierpont, about 15 miles south of Buccia Winery and B&B. Years later he found himself right back to his farming roots after spending years working in Atlanta, Vancouver, and Nashville. The wines Bill produces at Buccia are cool climate and estate grown, with some being unique to the region such as Agawam, Seyval Blanc, Baco Noir, Vignoles and Steuben. His wines are bottled in small lots and hand-crafted, focusing on the characteristics of each vintage which lets each wine tell a story of the growing season. Visitors to Buccia will find a casual, yet elegant, environment where the motto always is, “Peace, Love, Wine.”

The Laurello Family Laurello Vineyards

When Larry and Kim Laurello founded Laurello Vineyards in 2002, they reignited a decades-old family tradition. Larry’s grandfather, Cosmo, established the family’s first Ohio-based winery in the 1940s, eventually leaving the fields behind to establish a railroad-construction company. That company still exists today, although Laurello Vineyards honors the family’s past while setting down fresh roots for the future.

The family mainly creates Old World–inspired blends and single-varietal wines with crisp acidity and firm tannic structure to balance the fruit-forward notes. Ohio-grown grapes appear in many wines such as an off-dry, pear-tinged riesling and an unctuous cabernet franc-cabernet sauvignon blend, which ages in French oak barrels. Laurello Vineyards also features a casual bistro, which tempts visitors with its gourmet cheese and antipasto boards, panini sandwiches, and wood-fired pizzas.

Brian and Jennifer Diehl  Brant’s Apple Orchard

Since April 2014, Brian and Jennifer Diehl have owned and operated Brant’s Apple Orchard, a favorite fall destination in the area. Since taking over from the Brant family’s hard work in establishing the orchard, the Diehls have added more trees, expanded the market and bakery, built a playground, added walking trails, and added more seating areas, but have made sure to keep the nostalgic and family atmosphere that makes the orchard so special.

It is a family affair at Kosicek Vineyards! Owners Tony and Maury Kosicek turned a favorite family hobby into a blossoming agritourism business in the heart of the Grand River Valley. Wearing many hats, the family combines farming, winemaking, hospitality, and customer service to create a premier winery experience for their customers. Their children, Emma and Anthony, have grown up with memories planting, harvesting, and working in the cellar. Even the family dog, Brix, is a regular.

Kosicek produces over 20 varieties of award-winning wines. They offer a small menu of delicious pairings and are open year-round. Guests are surrounded by a working vineyard where the wine that they sip originated. Locals know this winery for making you feel like an old friend. Thoughtful touches surprise and delight visitors, like the colorful field of sunflowers grown for customers to enjoy and pick during harvest. The varied wine list includes reds, whites, specialty, and ice wines. You might be surprised how refreshing a wine slushie tastes on a hot summer day!

Peter (PJ) Macchia, Jr. The Cove Nightclub

PJ’s father, Peter Macchia, started The Cove Nightclub in 1963 after working at The Riviera Hotel in Palm Springs, California during the 1950s and ’60s. He wanted to bring a live music venue to his childhood summer vacation destination, Geneva-onthe-Lake. The Cove became a popular venue for up-and-coming rock bands and performers from Northeast Ohio, as well as national acts, and still is to this day. PJ operates the Cove and has invested in many other businesses in the Genevaon-the-Lake community such as Sporterz Bar & Grill, Yankies Bar & Grill, and vacation rentals. In 2023, The Cove will celebrate its 60th anniversary with special events honoring the legacy of the venue.

This museum in Conneaut features exhibits and artifacts that showcase the history of WWII, as well as the life of service personnel and their families. The highlights: Uniforms and equipment used by U.S. soldiers during this tumultuous time in U.S. history, and exhibits focusing on the German forces and the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944.

DThe annual D-Day Reenactment at Conneaut Township Park (held August 17-19, 2023) draws thousands of reenactors and spectators from all over the country.

Ashtabula Maritime & Surface Transportation Museum

The museum dedicated to maritime heritage was built in 1871 and was once home to the lighthouse keeper and Coast Guard chief. It displays maritime artifacts (including the largest piece of beach glass in the world) and tells the story of Lake Erie and the Great Lakes shipping.

Conneaut Railroad Museum

Dedicated to the men and women who worked for local railroads. The Nickel Plate Road 755 was among the last steam locomotives in Conneaut in 1958. The museum itself is housed in the former Lake Shore & Michigan Southern passenger depot, constructed in 1900. Local area rail history is portrayed through photographs, rail artifacts, and full-size displays, & more.

Ashtabula County Antique Engine Club

Visit the beautiful grounds including two museums: The Agricultural Heritage & The P&LE Railroad Depot, which tell the story of an era gone by. Lake Erie is the shallowest, warmest and most biologically productive of the five great lakes, containing more consumable fish than all of the other four combined. The Lake Erie walleye fishery is widely considered the best in the world. Because it is so shallow, Erie is the only Great Lake that is entirely above sea level. The outlet is the Niagara River; consequently, it is Lake Erie that feeds water to Niagara Falls. Walleye, perch and steelhead fishing is ideal off the Ashtabula County shore, referred to as the Central basin. Depths and temperatures combine for the perfect conditions. Even a first-time fisherman can reel in a great catch!

Ever been lucky enough to find a smooth, colored “rock” on the shore? Chances are, you found a piece of beach glass!

Gently rolled by the waves, the sharp edges of broken glass are smoothed among the rocks and pebbles. When visiting the Great Lakes, beachcombers are often pleasantly surprised to find sparkles lining the shore. Over time, Mother Nature gives us a lesson in recycling and transforms discarded glass into coveted gems known as beach glass. (Along the ocean, these pieces are called sea glass).

Often taking decades to smooth, shards of glass tumble among the rocks and sand at the bottom of the lake and eventually wash ashore. Where the glass originated is anyone’s guess. It can originate from depression glass, beer bottles, or even old boat lights. The most common colors are shades of green, blue, white and brown. Many believe that the best time to spot beach glass is after a storm when the rocks have been churned up, or early in the morning after a night of waves pushing the pebbles around.

Each year, Ashtabula Harbor pays homage to these gifts from the lake at the annual Beach Glass Festival. Local artisans sell jewelry and magnificent pieces of art made from their shoreline finds.

Once the border between the Algonquin and Iroquois Indian tribes, the name translates as “river of many fish.” 88 species of fish have been documented in the waters.

Heavily wooded watershed harboring exceptional variety of wildlife populations and unique, sometimes rare, plant communities. Nationally noted for quality steelhead trout fishing.

The North Shore Trail is 5.25 miles of shared roadway and asphalt trail for foot traffic and biking, the northern portion of the Western Reserve Greenway Trail. Beginning at Morrison Station on West Avenue in Ashtabula continuing north to Walnut Beach on Lake Erie. This is the northern terminus of the Great Ohio Lake to River Greenway.

A progressive wine tasting event. Join us for our annual event as we pop the cork on our vintage “Cask 1023.” Noon– 5 p.m., $10 per person at each winery. The cask project began as an idea in 2010 to have a continual red blend from the

Grand River Valley. Each year a percentage of the wine will be bottled and sold to make room for the next year’s harvest. The date on the bottle represents the year it began “10” and the year it was bottled “23.” Each winery used a different 500 gallon oak barrel from different countries and fills it with vinifera grapes from their farm. Join Debonne Vineyards, Ferrante Winery, Grand River Cellars, Laurello Vineyards, and Cask 307 for an afternoon of wine sampling and tasty appetizers.

Be sure to stop at Old Firehouse Winery located on the Lake Erie shore. Throughout the year, they host live music, themed craft shows, and seasonal festivals overlooking Lake Erie. Old Firehouse's menu offers family-friendly selections as well as fun drinks for adults, such as wine slushies, frozen margaritas, and wine flights. Be sure to check out the firetruck memorabilia inside and grab a photo in the firetruck at the entrance. Buckle up & head down the historic “Strip” in Geneva-on-the-Lake. You’ll find food and entertainment, relaxation and many ways to enjoy the outdoors.

Oncea farming town with seasonal hunting and fishing cabins, Geneva-on-the-Lake began to transform into Ohio’s First Summer Resort when an enterprising businessman invited visitors on July 4, 1869, to his “pleasure grounds,” a picnic and camping area at Sturgeon Point on the shores of Lake Erie. It was an immediate hit. Shortly after adding a horse-powered carousel and boarding house, popularity of the area grew. Waves of visitors made the easy trip from Pittsburgh, Warren, and Youngstown, often to escape the oppressive heat of the steel mills. For the next 100 years, the Village expanded, adding dance halls and amusement rides, followed by arcades and nightclubs. Music and dance filled the air, hosting performers from Duke Ellington to Jimmy Hendrix. The rise of automobile ownership, coupled with little municipal oversight, caused the town to crowd with wild behaviors. In 1970, Ohio raised its drinking age to 21 and some of the raucous hustle began to diminish. The community returned to more family-oriented activities and began welcoming back visitors who had vacationed there as children.

Today, that tradition continues. A summer drive down “the Strip” at Geneva-on-the-Lake is an annual right of passage. Families pack the sidewalks, stopping at arcades and food stands while live music floats from several stages. The area welcomes travelers year-round with lodging options ranging from a lakefront resort to quaint cottage rentals. Outdoor recreation abounds at the state park, marina, and waterfront. The 72-par golf course, dating to the 1930s, still challenges golfers of any skill level. And for those that enjoy the timeless pastime of camping, several modern campgrounds pepper the surrounding area. The weekend after Labor Day, the strip comes alive with the largest local motorcycle rally in northeastern Ohio, Thunder on the Strip.

60 years of rock n’ roll and live entertainment will be celebrated this year at The Cove Nite Club. Let’s take a look back at where it all began. The Cove was opened in 1963 by Peter Macchia, his parents, Frank and Jeanette, and his nephew Bobby Nocera. Pete came to Geneva-on-the-Lake with his parents as a young child and fell in love with the atmosphere. As a young adult, Pete lived in Palm Springs, California, where he fell in love with the entertainment industry.

Pulling inspiration from his time spent in Palm Springs, Pete built and opened The Cove Nite Club in 1963. The venue quickly became a popular spot for up-and-coming rock bands and performers from Northeast Ohio, as well as national acts including; Jimmy Hendrix, The Drifters, The Coasters, The Platters, Donnie Iris, The Jaggerz, Gary Glenn and the Jewel Tones, Joe Walsh of the Eagles, Jani Lane, LA Guns, Skid Row, Slaughter, Quiet Riot, and Mushroomhead.
