e n i W Good s e p a r Good G begins with

Ashtabula County is ground zero for outstanding Ohio wine.

Fifty percent of the state’s grapes are grown in our vineyards, creating a backdrop for over 30 wineries. Good wine begins with good grapes. Our Lake Erie micro-climate, with warm sunny days and cool nights extending into the fall, pairs with rich, fertile land at a higher elevation to create ideal conditions for grape-growing in the Grand River Valley and Conneaut Creek regions. Slopes and valleys move air and drain water, allowing the flavors in the fruit to develop without being diluted. Good wine begins with good grapes. This is no longer a place where the native Concord and Niagara grapes rule. The countryside is cultivating some of the best Pinot, Cabernet, Riesling, and Vidal in the country. Winegrowers work their fields year-round, caring for seasoned vines and cultivating new ones. Good wine begins with good grapes. It is this gift from Mother Nature that allows us to put our stake in the ground as Ohio’s Wine Country. We are proud of our native fruit. There is nothing like a deep September breath full of the sweet smell of grapes letting everyone know that harvest time is near. Lake Erie keeps our land warm for a few precious weeks longer than most, giving our grapes extra time to develop that flavor. Good wine begins with good grapes. We hope you’ll take home a bottle of our good grapes.

Come as you are: dressed up or dressed down Drink what you like: sweet or dry Take home some wine: a bottle or case We’re waiting to welcome you! 10

he Debevc family has a long tradition in the Grand River Valley wine region. Tony Debevc and his father started Debonne Vineyards back in 1972. Ohio’s largest estate winery is known for its beautiful, organic scenery of rolling hills filled with acres and acres of grapevines. The winery itself features a large selection of wines as well as appetizers and sandwiches. Keeping the family tradition alive, Tony Jr. joined the team at Debonne in 2008 and started a brewery that is now known as Double Wing Brewing Company to commemorate his father’s love of flying. In 2004, Tony and Beth Debevc teamed up with life-long friends, Cindy and Jeff Lindberg and purchased one of the original wineries in the region that fell upon hard times. Grand River

In 2019, Tony and Beth decided to build a new addition to the Grand River Valley wine region and Cask 307 was born. This new facility was built on a need to educate the consumer on regional wines and to be the gateway to the valley. This winery features unique regional wines, specialty craft beers made specifically for them by Double Wing Brewing Co., and specialty cheese plates and light fare. . w o n S o t g n i o G Yes, it is A Our Suggestion: Wine About It

Ashtabula County is tucked in Ohio’s most northeast corner, known locally as the heart of the snowbelt. Here, lake effect snow is a common occurrence. This phenomenon occurs in only a handful of places around the world. When freezing cold air moves across the open waters of Lake Erie, it picks up moisture and accumulates, typically falling in large amounts as it hits land. These bouts of heavy snow showers regularly create winter wonderlands throughout the region.

Lakefronts sparkle with icy wave sculptures and rolling vineyards appear to be covered in a blanket of white. Winemakers are busy tending barrels and tanks in the cellars. Wineries stoke toasty fires and pull extra seats around the fireplaces, both indoor and out. Guests can even find an igloo to relax in for dinner! Midweek is always the best time to beat the crowds. Lodging costs are low and availability is high. Live music and entertainment are still abundant on the weekends. Winter in the Grand River Valley is a special season. If you’ve not embraced a snowy visit, it’s time. There is nothing like a cozy retreat with your favorite person!

Mother-Daughter Duo

At Hundley Cellars, owner Tracy Hundley-Pringle gets excited to talk about the balance of winemaking, viticulture, and enology. In an industry where female winemakers are few and far between, Tracy works just enough cellar magic to stand out from the pack. She favors the European style, meaning a wine lower in alcohol and higher in acidity to better pair with food, focusing on the characteristics of the grape. In tandem with Gerri Hundley, her mother, co-owner, and hostess extraordinaire, this lovely boutique winery has quickly become a stop that makes guests feel right at home. With thoughtful menu ingredients like creamy bacon brie and tarragon roasted chicken, you will delight in the selections. Stories abound around every corner, including winery labels like The Baron: a rich, luxurious, Bordeaux-style blend with a hint of tobacco, or Pink Camo: a nod to their love of outdoors and strong women. A percentage of Pink Camo proceeds helps victims of domestic violence. The Hundley ladies live up to every expectation of warm hospitality. It is appropriate that their location is a remodeled home because every guest feels at home when they cross the threshold. Stop by to relax by the pond or warm around a firepit. The Hundley family would love for you to stay awhile.

Ren & Toni Carlisle

The name Carlisle has been synonymous with retail in Ashtabula County since the mid-1800s. Lorenzo and Toni Carlisle saw potential in a historic Bridge Street storefront and almost two decades ago opened Carlisle’s Home in the Harbor. This popular, quaint boutique specializes in unique gifts and local products. Shelves are filled with specialty items and inventory is constantly changing. Now retired, Ren has turned operations over to his wife, Toni, whom he credits with the store’s success. He insists that her personal touch makes all the difference and is reflected in the products and the customer service. “Toni has the extraordinary skill of remembering names. I’m certain that at least 20% of our customers stop in just to chat with her and we wouldn’t want it any other way!”

Joe Erickson Joe Ericksen spent hours with his wife, Christine, perfecting ice cream recipes for a lakefront ice cream truck that they dreamed of opening on the Conneaut shore. Their secret was to begin with the best, fresh ingredients available. Divine intervention shifted their focus from a mobile operation and led them to put down roots in a 100-year-old church. The family restored and preserved the beautiful building, opening Heavenly Creamery in 2015. Sitting in a pew or behind the pulpit, guests will have a hard time choosing from an extensive made-from-scratch ice cream menu. Enjoy your favorite scoop over a slice of homemade Texas Sheet Cake – a deliciously sinful combination.

Shane & Heather shake up specialty cocktails behind the bar at Sparky’s. This watermelon mojito is perfect for cooling off after a day at the beach.

Welcome to Conneaut,

Conneaut Township Park

In 1796,

Moses Cleaveland set up camp with his team at the mouth of the Conneaut River to begin surveying lands for the Connecticut Western Reserve. A historical marker can be found near the Pennsylvania line on East Main Street (Route 20). Within a few decades, Conneaut’s port was bustling with activity and the town was known for building some of the best ships on the Great Lakes. Today, the waterfront continues to be a draw. Conneaut Township Park boasts the largest beach in the county and is home to a 1936 retro-modern lighthouse. It is one of the few places in the country that visitors can drive their vehicle out onto the beach. Because of migration patterns and the unique sandbar created by the breakwall, Conneaut finds itself a stopping point for many rare bird species. The deep-water port continues to bustle as it did over 200 years ago with commercial and recreational boats, alike. 28

Conneaut is Ohio’s most northeast corner and is the entrance for those traveling the Route 90 corridor from Buffalo and Erie. The beautiful lakefront and abundant natural resources, combined with convenient accessibility and major manufacturing corporations, make this an ideal destination for people to live, work, and play. Visitors come from near and far for a quiet, Northshore escape. Hunting opportunities are abundant. Fishermen may want to keep it a secret that Conneaut Creek is considered one of the premier locations in the world for steelhead fishing. Bring your rod and head to the river or charter a boat to participate in some of the best walleye and perch fishing the lake has seen in years. Travel by boat; the Conneaut Marina has over 300 slips. Residents welcome guests to experience the places that make their community rich with attractions like the Conneaut Arts Center, the Conneaut Railroad Museum, and covered bridges. Conneaut boasts two awardwinning wineries: Markko Vineyards and Buccia Winery and B&B.

Breakwall BBQ

D-Day Reenactment

Lake Erie

Buccia Vineyards and B&B

Don’t let the peaceful yesteryear feeling of this community fool you into thinking that it is not a modern town that knows how to throw a party! Each August, this sleepy little town transforms and hosts one of the largest D-Day reenactments in the world. The living history event is free and is made memorable by over 3,000 reenactors who are in character all weekend. Embracing the abundance of the north shore, Conneaut hosts a Perch & Pilsner Festival. A fishing tournament, beer, and live music are rounded out by a spectacular fireworks show. That’s not all! The unique breakwall allows the ideal calm waves for a waterski show during the festival. Travelers looking for the amenities of a lakefront destination without the hustle-bustle of a crowded tourist trap will feel right at home in Ohio’s northeast corner. To plan your trip, visit www.VisitConneautOhio.com. Enjoy the Americana charm of the city of Conneaut.

SAVE H DATE

Drawing covered bridge fans from around the world, the Ashtabula Covered Bridge Festival is held the 2nd weekend in October.

When is the best time to take the covered bridge tour?

Winter Wonderland

Anytime. With every season the bridges take on a new look. In the spring, the beautiful wildflowers create a palate of softness against their rustic colors. In the summer the light can be seen beaming through their various intricate timbers. During fall the area's fall foliage makes for a perfect backdrop against the dark and colored woods of the bridges. And in winter, the soft blanket of snow as it lays gently on their covered roofs, creating a magical winter postcard.

Lakehouse Inn Resort

Located on the shore of Lake Erie, in Geneva-on-the-Lake, The Lakehouse Inn provides an all-inclusive experience for guests.

M

ore than just a Bed & Breakfast, The Lakehouse Inn Resort also features a small batch production winery, 50 seat farm-to-table restaurant, and a full-service day spa. In addition, with its terraced gardens and lakefront location, The Lakehouse Inn offers one of the best views in the region. The Lakehouse Inn has been a staple in Geneva-on-the-Lake for over 80 years but it is the vision of the current owners that has turned this property into the destination that it is today. When the Fagnilli family purchased The Lakehouse Inn in 2000, the property consisted only of lodging accommodations. Primarily a summer business at that time, the Fagnilli family wanted to make The Lakehouse Inn a year-round destination and have spent the past 20 years accomplishing this goal.

They quickly realized that guests needed a reason to stay in Geneva-on-the-Lake during the winter months and so in 2001 they added a winery to the property. Next came an outdoor patio, overlooking Lake Erie, for guests to enjoy food and beverages during the summer months. A few years later the restaurant opened, followed by the day spa in 2012. The goal was to offer enough activities on site so that guests did not have to leave the property! Open to the public, you do not have to be a lodging guest to enjoy these attractions. Twenty later, The Lakehouse Inn is the ideal destination for the food and wine lover. Guests can wake up to a scrumptious breakfast featuring the freshest local ingredients, indulge in an afternoon wine tasting, and then finish the day with a romantic dinner with

scenic views of Lake Erie. Crosswinds Grille at The Lakehouse Inn specializes in woodfired, locally-sourced, farm-to-table cuisine. The chef works closely with local farmers to create seasonal menus featuring the freshest ingredients available. Guests looking for some pampering can walk across the street and treat themselves to a spa service. The Spa at The Lakehouse Inn offers a relaxing environment that allows guests to step away from their hectic life and indulge, whether it be for an hour or a full day of pampering! The spa offers a wide range of services including a variety of massages, facials, and body treatments. A visit to the spa will leave you feeling renewed and rejuvenated. No matter the season, The Lakehouse Inn Resort is the perfect getaway to relax and unwind.

very community has a pocket that the locals flock to when meeting up with friends and family outside of work and home. It is usually an area that has good food, unique gift shops, activities, and great scenery. Bridge Street in the Historic Ashtabula Harbor is our place. Once one of the busiest ports on the Great Lakes, stories of swindling sailors, freedom-seekers, and ladies of the night fill the halls of the historic buildings lining the street. A lighthouse marks the mouth of the Ashtabula River, spanned by a bascule bridge that lifts every half hour to accommodate boat traffic. Annual events, such as the Wine & Walleye Festival, Beach Glass Festival, and Farmers’ Market, are favorites among locals and visitors. No matter when you visit, you'll feel right at home on Bridge Street.

Discover more than 110 unique works of art on the Barn Quilt Trail Throughout Ashtabula County at attractions, businesses and private residences, visitors will see barn quilts painted on sign boards and displayed on barns, covered bridges, historical places or places of significance. The concept of barn quilts began with Donna Sue Groves in Adams County, Ohio and her wish to honor her mother Maxine and her Appalachian heritage. Time Travel This area is full of history. Find museums centered around WWII, the Underground Railroad, maritime heritage, and more.

Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum – Ashtabula A terminus, or end point, of the Underground Railroad, William and Katharine Hubbard’s house on the shore of Lake Erie helped fugitive slaves reach freedom. Around 1834, the Hubbards moved to the area to help relatives with their businesses and in 1840 they built a home on the shores of Lake Erie. They risked stiff penalties by opening their home, operating under the code names of “Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard” and “The Great Emporium,” to slaves seeking safe passage to Canada years before the American Civil War. No records were ever kept as to the number of slaves that found protection at the home, and no slave was ever captured.

Historic 19th Century Jefferson Depot – Jefferson

Ashtabula Maritime & Surface Transportation Museum – Ashtabula

Take a costumed guided tour back in time through oneroom schoolhouses, train depots, and general stores. This historic living history village started as a movement to save the passenger and freight depot of the Lake Shore and Michigan Railroad.

The museum dedicated to maritime heritage was built in 1871 and was once home to the lighthouse keeper and Coast Guard chief. It displays maritime artifacts (including the largest piece of beach glass in the world) and tells the story of Lake Erie and the Great Lakes shipping.

The highlights: Uniforms and equipment used by U.S. soldiers during this tumultuous time in U.S. history, and exhibits focusing on the German forces and the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944.

Ashtabula County is home to the inventor of modern cursive writing. Platt R. Spencer (1801-1864) was a resident of Geneva township. Among his many accomplishments, he developed the Spencerian system of handwriting and is known as the Father of American Penmanship, or cursive writing. It is said that Spencer modeled the curves and loops of his script after the beautiful landscapes and shores of Lake Erie. Samples of this writing can be seen at the Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum. #bula #ohioswinecountry

Charter fishing on Lake Erie

Go Fish Lake Erie is the shallowest, warmest and most biologically productive of the five great lakes, containing more consumable fish than all of the other four combined. The Lake Erie walleye fishery is widely considered the best in the world. Because it is so shallow, Erie is the only Great Lake that is entirely above sea level. The outlet is the Niagara River; consequently, it is Lake Erie that feeds water to Niagara Falls. Walleye, perch and steelhead fishing is ideal off the Ashtabula County shore, referred to as the Central basin. Depths and temperatures combine for the perfect conditions. Even a first-time fisherman can reel in a great catch! Charter boat companies operating out of marinas in Geneva, Ashtabula, and Conneaut offer first-class experiences on the water – they won’t even make you touch the worms! If fishing isn’t your idea of fun on the water, ask a charter about their sunset cruises. DID YOU KNOW? Lake Erie fishing is still robust during the fall months as schools move from the cooling, shallow western waters to the central basin.

@incrediblyfishy Conneaut Creek

Riveartion Recre Ohio is home to 15 wild and scenic rivers. Ashtabula County boasts FOUR of those rivers twisting and turning through the countryside:

Ashtabula River

Once the border between the Algonquin and Iroquois Indian tribes, the name translates as “river of many fish.” 88 species of fish have been documented in the waters.

Conneaut Creek

Heavily wooded watershed harboring exceptional variety of wildlife populations and unique, sometimes rare, plant communities. Nationally noted for quality steelhead trout fishing.

Hiking g n i k i B & The Western Reserve Greenway Trail offers many ways to get moving. The paved trail follows a disused rail bed that once transported iron ore by train to the lakeside town of Ashtabula. The tree-lined route in now used for recreational rambling through the countryside for over 30 miles.

Grand River

BIRDS OF A FEATHER

Pristine semi-wilderness conditions, good quality water and variety of fish species allow the ideal habitat for beavers and river otters.

Ashtabula County boasts an impressive assortment of habitat and access points for bird watchers. Hundreds of species have been recorded.

Pymatuning Lake Creek

Outstanding recreational fish populations, including northern pike and yellow perch, not common in Ohio’s rivers and streams. Anglers pull prized catches from the waters, canoe and kayakers paddle under natural canopies and bird watchers spot migrating species along each of the meandering rivers.

ss a l G h c a Be Ever been lucky enough to find a smooth, colored “rock” on the shore? Chances are, you found a piece of beach glass! Gently rolled by the waves, the sharp edges of broken glass are smoothed among the rocks and pebbles. When visiting the Great Lakes, beachcombers are often pleasantly surprised to find a sparkle among the rocks and pebbles that line the shore. Over time, Mother Nature gives us a lesson in recycling and transforms discarded glass into coveted gems known as beach glass. (Along the ocean, these pieces are called sea glass.) Often taking decades to smooth, shards of glass tumble among the rocks and sand at the bottom of the lake and eventually wash ashore. Where the glass originated is anyone’s guess. It can originate from depression glass, beer bottles, or even old boat lights. The most common colors are shades of green, blue, white and brown. When searching for beach glass, locals advise turning away from the sun. This makes it easier to identify the shimmer. The gems are easiest to spot in the groups of small-medium pebbles. If you hunt along the shore where the stones are wet, the colors in the glass will stand out. As a general rule, pieces with sharp edges are not yet ready to be “harvested,” and should be tossed back into the lake. Many believe that the best time to spot beach glass is after a storm when the rocks have been churned up, or early in the morning after a night of waves pushing the pebbles around. Each year, Ashtabula Harbor pays homage to these gifts from the lake at the annual Beach Glass Festival. Local artisans sell jewelry and magnificent pieces of art made from their shoreline finds. The festival takes place the last weekend in June. We can’t wait to see what treasures from the deep you find when visiting our beautiful Lake Erie shore. Happy treasure hunting!

For over 150 years, visitors have been spending vacation time at Geneva-on-the-Lake.

O

nce a farming town with seasonal hunting and fishing cabins, GOTL began to transform into Ohio’s First Summer Resort when an enterprising businessman invited visitors on July 4, 1869, to his “pleasure grounds,” a picnic and camping area at Sturgeon Point on the shores of Lake Erie. It was an immediate hit. Shortly after adding a horse-powered carousel and boarding house, popularity of the area grew. Waves of visitors made the easy trip from Pittsburgh, Warren, and Youngstown, often to escape the oppressive heat of the steel mills.

80

visitashtabulacounty.com | 800-337-6746

For the next 100 years, the Village expanded, adding dance halls and amusement rides, followed by arcades and nightclubs. Music and dance filled the air, hosting performers from Duke Ellington to Jimmy Hendrix. The rise of automobile ownership, coupled with little municipal oversight, caused the town to crowd with wild behaviors. In 1970, Ohio raised its drinking age to 21 and some of the raucous hustle began to diminish. The community returned to more family-oriented activities and began welcoming back visitors who had vacationed there as children.

Today, that tradition continues. A summer drive down “the Strip” at Geneva-on-the-Lake is an annual right of passage. Families pack the sidewalks, arcades and food stands, with live music floating from several stages. The area welcomes travelers twelve months a year with lodging options ranging from a fine lakefront hotel to quaint cottage rentals. Outdoor recreation abounds at the state park, marina, and waterfront. The 72-par golf course, dating to the 1930s, still challenges golfers of any skill level. The Village is part of Ohio’s Wine Country;

guests can find over 30 wineries in the region. And for those that enjoy the timeless pastime of camping, several modern campgrounds pepper the surrounding area. Geneva-on-the-Lake offers a relaxed, familyfriendly environment. The area has proven that no matter your age, the combination of beaches + music + food never goes out of style. Check out VisitGenevaontheLake.com for more information and a schedule of events.

Visit a piece of Americana this year and enjoy the nostalgic charm of historic Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio.

A

ffordable family fun is what you’ll find here! For generations, Geneva-on-the-Lake has been a family destination and continues to attract anyone who is a kid at heart.

Families can challenge each other on bumper boats, adventure golf, and arcade games. Zip through the sky on our zipline course or challenge yourself to rock climbing. Little ones can get all their energy out (rain or shine) in the Adventure Krawl tubes, nets, and obstacles.
