DID YOU KNOW?
The name "Ashtabula" originates from an Algonquin Indian word meaning "River of many fish."
SYMBOLS OF HISTORY
Ashtabula County, a key hub of the Underground Railroad, has a rich abolitionist history. Barn quilts, thought to have been used as a secret code by escaping enslaved people, may have signaled safe houses and routes to freedom. While the historical accuracy of this is debated, the connection remains a powerful symbol of resilience. The Ashtabula County Barn Quilt Trail stretches across Ohio’s largest county, showcasing farms, orchards, wineries, historical sites, and private properties that highlight local pride and heritage. Above: Barn Quilt "Follow the Drinking Gourd" at Crescent Farm in Rome Township. Find a list of barn quilts on the map located in the center of this guide.

WE KNOW PINOT
The Grand River Valley lies along the International Pinot Belt, a narrow band of latitude that stretches from France to Oregon, where many great Pinot grapes are grown.
Pinot Gris is a cool-climate grape – which works perfectly with our growing conditions. It ripens early enough in the season for good ‘hang time’ so grapes can reach their fullest maturity. Winemakers love to work with it in their cellars as the wine can be made into a wide range of styles: dry with a hint of oak in the French style (Gris) or with no oak and a touch of sweetness in the Italian style (Grigio).
Super Sweet
The cold of Northeast Ohio brings out the sweet nectar frozen on the vines in snow-laden vineyards located south of Lake Erie. This creates a microclimate that allows winemakers to grow grapes and make exceptional ice wines.
Ice Wine harvest is typically done in the early morning hours when temperatures dip well below freezing. The natural water content that is found in the grapes needs to be frozen when harvested. This results in a concentrated, thick extraction of juice which in turn is used for Ice Wine. Typically, the Brix level is between 37-40, which is ideal for producing this decadent dessert wine.
Ice Wine varietals in the Grand River Valley region include Vidal Blanc, Concord, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay. Each varietal has its own set of unique characteristics that are sure to be palate pleasing. Flavors of sweet peach, apricot, honey, cherry, and citrus can be found in these delicious Ice Wines.
When you see this logo on wine bottles in Ohio Wine Country, it means the wine was grown, pressed, and made in the Grand River Valley AVA.
WINE NOT?
If you don't care for wine, not to worry. There are still plenty of beverage options in Ohio Wine Country. With several craft breweries and distilleries throughout the area, you'll be sure to find something new to try with a local flavor.
For non-alcoholic options, at Red Eagle Distillery, you can ask for all of their cocktails as mock-tails. They are equally as delicious and made with homemade syrups, fresh fruit, and garnishes.
Enjoy fresh-pressed grape juice at Debonne Vineyards during harvest season.

Pro tip: At Cask 307, be sure to ask about the hidden items in the tasting room linked to the owners' connection to "flight".
WHAT iS A FLigHT?
A flight is simply a term used to describe a selection of wine, beer, spirits, coffee, or food presented in small portions for tasting. This can be your choice, or a pre-set selection curated by your server.
WHY iS iT cALLED A FLigHT?
While there is no single definitive answer, many believe the term flight was chosen because it means a "group of." However, another common explanation is because the presentation reminds people of traveling on an airplane.
HOW DO I APPROAcH TASTiNg A FLigHT?
When tasting a wine or beer flight, it's helpful to go light to dark to avoid overwhelming your palate. In addition, enjoy from dry to sweet. Take time to observe the color, aroma, and taste of each product, and consider how they compare and contrast with one another.
Flights help you find new favorites, explore food pairings, and play with flavor profiles. As you try each sample, take tasting notes as to what you smell, taste, like, or dislike, and any other information that could assist you when picking out your favorites.

ENJOY DIFFERENT WINERY EXPERIENCES IN THE GRAND RIVER VALLEY
Signature
At Signature wineries, guests can expect to find rows of vineyards growing grapes used to produce Grand River Valley estate wines. Inside, wine sampling is encouraged to help guests make a selection that suits their taste (please note that Ohio law requires a charge for samples). Food choices are available for pairing; wine always tastes better with food! Signature wineries are open 5-7 days a week.
Artisan
Artisan wineries are small-scale wine producers that focus on high-quality, handcrafted wines. These wineries are characterized by their emphasis on traditional and manual winemaking techniques, attention to detail, and commitment to producing unique and distinctive wines. Guests can expect a light menu or snacks to pair with their wine experience. Artisan wineries are open 3 or more days a week.
Casual
Casual wineries offer a laid back, relaxed atmosphere. These locations cater to visitors who want a comfortable and informal setting. Many have a full menu to accompany their wine list. Guests often enjoy live music and a variety of beverages. Every location has a story; be sure to ask about the history while you are there, and learn what they are known for.
Surrounding Areas: The Conneaut Creek appellation is located in the Northeastern corner of Ashtabula County. Wines in the Conneaut Creek region are unique and distinguishable based on the timing and difference of temperature in comparison to the Grand River Valley AVA.

Harpersfield Vineyards
With over 85 years of rich winery history, the Ferrante family has been producing nationally and internationally acclaimed wines since 1937, when they opened their first winery in Cleveland’s Collinwood area. In the 1970s Peter (Papa) Ferrante built a stateof-the-art winemaking facility in the family’s Harpersfield Township vineyard.
Pete (Papa) Ferrante & his wife Josephine (Mama) Ferrante created a legacy that now 5 of their 8 children are continuing to honor. Anthony Ferrante manages 40 acres of manicured vineyards, and Winemaker Nick Ferrante continually experiments with new innovative technology/techniques to keep his wines cutting edge.
With over 60 acres of manicured vineyards, Nick and his team specialize in the agriculture of Vinifera & French American Hybrid-style grapes, including Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gruner Veltliner, Vidal Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Dolcetto, and many others. Truly a grape-to-glass experience!
In the Ristorante, sisters Carmel and Mary Jo Ferrante, along with the entire extended Ferrante family and staff provide the ultimate dining experience.
The full-service restaurant incorporates the Ferrante Family’s Italian traditions with an elevated twist. A hearty, rich lasagna featuring Mama Jo’s homemade renowned sauce will certainly not disappoint. Looking for something less traditional? Be sure to indulge in Ferrante favorites, such as Gnocchi Brue: filet mignon, potato gnocchi, gorgonzola crumbles, mushrooms, and onions in a rich wine demi-glacé. No matter what you decide these Italian-inspired dishes are paired perfectly with the Ferrante wines.
The
Ferrante Family encourages you to sip, savor, and salute family tradition!

Ohio has a “cool-climate viticulture,” similar to many European, Australian, and California growing regions. The resulting wines made from cool-climate grapes have full fruit flavors but slightly higher acidity. The wines have a clean, crisp flavor and go very well with food. Many types of grapes successfully thrive in the soil across the state. Some of the most popular are Vitis vinifera (European wine grape or common grape) varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot, and are joined in the vineyards by French-American hybrids such as Chambourcin, Vidal Blanc and Traminette.

Historic Ashtabula Harbor
eat, Meet, & shop In a northeast ohIo coastal destInatIon
The Historic Ashtabula Harbor is a vibrant destination. Known for its historic visual charm, the area is a thriving hub of retail shops, one-of-a-kind restaurants, and a working Bascule Bridge. Many of the buildings in the Historic Ashtabula Harbor were constructed in the mid-to-late 1800s, when Ashtabula was a flourishing port city. Today, you'll still find a working harbor, beautiful waterfront views, good eats, lodging, and leisure activities.
No matter where you are on Bridge Street, there's a good chance you will smell fresh-roasted coffee from Harbor Perk Coffeehouse & Roasting Company. The company offers a rotating selection of single-origin, organic, fair-trade arabica beans sourced from around the world.
Foodies rejoice on Bridge Street, where more than a dozen restaurants serve mouthwatering, flavorful fare. Whether celebrating a special occasion at Bascule Bridge Grille or Rennick Meat Market, digging into a wood-fired pizza at Nights & Weekends, or attending wing night at Bridge Street Tavern, consider your tastebuds satisfied.
Briquettes Smokehouse's house-smoked meats and Harbor Halcyon's speakeasy vibe provide even more dining options for a night out. At-home dinner preparations can be just as exciting as dining on the waterfront, with Harbor Gardens and Phooey Farms' selection of organic, local farm-fresh ingredients for scratch cooking. The Historic Ashtabula Harbor doesn't end on Bridge Street, either—head to Fire! Chicken Sandwiches to indulge in crispy chicken cravings.
As you stroll around the area, you'll find several brick-and-mortar storefronts with curated homeware and retail merchandise.
Carlisle's Home in the Harbor provides an exceptional shopping experience in their age-old building, where you can find the perfect gift for anybody. Right next door, Bridge Street
Artworks showcases a gallery of fine works from talented local artisans, with many one-of-a-kind pieces available for purchase.
Explore a variety of gems and stones at The Light Emporium and find your inner bliss with a float tank session, facial, or massage at Vital Spa.
Take that relaxation even further by booking a room at the Riverbend Hotel — lodging that seamlessly blends with the fabric of the neighborhood, beautifully merging post-industrial influences with modern amenities and Midwestern hospitality.

ith 19 historic covered bridges to explore, including the longest in the United States, Ashtabula County is the perfect backdrop for a road trip any time of year. Check out our suggested itineraries below to help you make the most of your time. Use our map to guide you and discover new places to eat, stay, and play along the way.
HAVE A COUPLE OF HOURS?
We recommend visiting Smolen-Gulf bridge (the longest in North America) which spans 93 feet above the Ashtabula River. It’s the only place you’ll find a covered bridge over another covered bridge. Located below, Riverview is a pedestrian covered bridge offering an ideal place for a walk or picnic along the river. Nearby, visit one of our oldest: Olin bridge, which just celebrated its 150th anniversary. Next, head to Benetka Road bridge. On your way, be sure to grab an apple cider donut or cider slushie at Brant’s Apple Orchard (open AugustNovember) for your trip home.
HAVE A DAY?
Start with the preceding itinerary, then, pick up on the eastern route of the Covered Bridge Trail. Start at Giddings Road. Stop by Wall Street Coffee for a cup of coffee or tea for a pick-me-up. Then, visit Netcher Road in Jefferson and follow it to South Denmark which boasts a beautiful barn quilt. Explore country roads through rural Pierpont Township where you’ll find Caine Road, the first Pratt Truss bridge in Ohio. The Graham Road bridge is only one of two bridges that are not in use. Then, head north for about four miles towards Root Road. Continue your journey by visiting several bridges along Conneaut Creek (otherwise known as “Steelhead Alley”), including State Road, Middle Road, and Creek Road. This route brings you very near to Lake Erie and Conneaut Township Park, a popular place to enjoy the sunset or hunt for beach glass. Enjoy dinner at Sparky’s Place or Biscotti’s Restaurant. For a glass of wine to celebrate your adventures, visit Buccia Vineyard Winery, which is also a B&B with beautiful vineyard views.
HAVE A WEEKEND?
Start with the preceding two itineraries. Then, pick up on the western route beginning at Doyle Road bridge. Then, you’ll pass by the shortest bridge in the county, West Liberty. Drop by for a brew at Darkroom Brewing or dinner at Ferrante Ristorante. Drive to Harpersfield covered bridge which was reconstructed and opened in 2024. Drive through Mechanicsville bridge, believed to be the oldest bridge in Ashtabula County. Visit Riverdale and then you’ll end at the most southern bridge, Windsor Mills. Head north on Route 534 to find yourself in the heart of Ohio Wine Country and choose from dozens of wineries for lunch or dinner.
tips For visiting covered bridges
1. Use caution, many of the bridges only allow one-way traffic.
2. Be aware of the bridges that are on gravel roads (marked with dashed lines on our map) if you are driving a motorcycle or classic car.
3. Be cautious if you park along the road to get out and look at the bridge. Be respectful of adjacent private property at the bridges.
4. Download the Visit Ashtabula County App and "check in" on the Covered Bridge Trail as you travel around, and earn a digital badge.
5. Purchase a Covered Bridge Trail Passport and place a custom sticker as you visit each bridge!

Smok e h ouse2009 BBQ Since Briqu ettes
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
– Aurthur C. Clarke
agic is probably exactly what the first human thought it was when they laid their lips on the profound flavors created when meat and fat combine with woodsmoke and flame. Thousands of years after this first taste of sublime smokiness, when our tastebuds are greeted with the sweet and savory, salty and acidic, earthy umami explosion of meat smoked over fire, we still exclaim, “Oh, this is MAGIC!” There is something primitive about it. Something that moves the soul to the deepest depths of its being when the smell hits our olfactory. Barbeque is magic!
It isn’t just the smell and the taste that makes barbeque magical. The people who gather to enjoy the smoky delectability of the food also inadvertently create an unparalleled sense of fellowship. Sharing food has always been a sacred act among people, whether they are friends, family, rivals, or even enemies. However, BBQ is such a powerful form of this act of dining fellowship that it isn’t just a verb (to barbeque), it also serves as a noun that describes a gathering or an event. Traditionally, social caste is shed, hatchets are buried, and everyone becomes family at a barbeque. That’s why Barbeque is Community!
Since 2009, Briquettes Smokehouse has been doing magic. Built on the dream of a pair of local chefs with little cash but a ton of heart, the reality of a top-tier traditional barbeque restaurant in Ashtabula was born. The vision was simple. They wanted to create a style of barbeque that was regionally unique and utilized the spirit of Northeast Ohio to tell a story that could not be duplicated in southern regions. They chose to focus on two things: locally harvested cherry wood for smoke and locally produced maple syrup for their signature “Maple Mustard” barbeque sauce. They also longed for a way to bring the finer tastes of hand-crafted beers (and eventually spirits) to the scene.
Fifteen years later, that dream has not only been realized but has grown to become the regionally famous, nationally recognized rock star that it is today. From humble beginnings, they now boast riverside patio dining with the best view of the historic “Bascule Lift Bridge” in Ashtabula Harbor, a historic three-story brick-walled interior, a beautifully made bar (constructed from local cherry and hard maple,) and a team that is knowledgeable and experienced. According to partner Shane Styzej, “Some of our team members have been with the business for over a decade.”
“Don’t worry if the flavors stir you to tears; it’s okay to cry,” says founder Nate Rockwell. “Sometimes we get so busy in this modern day that we forget to appreciate the small things. We invite you to take an evening or afternoon, put down your electronic devices, sit across the table from people you love, look them in the eyes, and say, ‘I love you, and this smoked meat is my way of showing it.’”

Conneaut Creek is considered one of the premier locations in the world for steelhead fishing. Bring your rod and head to the river, or charter a boat for some of the best walleye and perch fishing you’ve ever experienced. There are kayak and supply rentals available in the area.
Take a trip along the back roads and explore the countryside of Conneaut while visiting four covered bridges: State Road, Creek Road, Middle Road, and Root Road.
The Conneaut Arts Center offers classes, art shows, and events year-round. Be sure to check out the "Lake Erie Monster Festival" in August, which celebrates the lore of what lurks in Lake Erie through art, games, music, food, and more.

Get Outside
River, lake, trail, or air? There are so many ways to enjoy nature.
TREASURE HUNT
When visiting the Great Lakes, beachcombers are often pleasantly surprised to find a sparkle among the rocks and pebbles that line the shore. Over time, Mother Nature gives us a lesson in recycling and transforms discarded glass into coveted gems known as beach glass.
When searching for beach glass, locals advise turning away from the sun. This makes it easier to identify the shimmer. The gems are easiest to spot in the groups of small-medium pebbles. If you hunt along the shore where the stones are wet, the colors in the glass will stand out.
Many believe that the best time to spot beach glass is after a storm when the rocks have been churned up, or early in the morning after a night of waves pushing the pebbles around.
Each year, the local community pays homage to these gifts from the lake at the annual Beach Glass Festival. Local artisans sell jewelry and magnificent pieces of art made from their shoreline finds.
Stop by the Geneva-on-the-Lake Welcome Center from May - October to purchase beach glass art, ornaments, and other colorful souvenirs.
WALLEYE WONDER
The area off the coast of Ashtabula County is part of the central basin of Lake Erie, and is particularly good for walleye fishing due to its deeper waters and temperatures. It has gained the reputation as the "walleye capital of the world." The fish are abundant, on average, from the end of June through October. Walleye must be 15" or longer to keep, with a maximum of 6 fish per person, per day.
Check out the annual Wine and Walleye Festival in Ashtabula the last weekend in June to kick off the fishing season.
gO FISH
Public fishing in Lake Erie is permitted at various locations throughout Ashtabula County. Ohio requires a fishing license for anyone over the age of 16 to take fish from any waters. Get yours at ODNR.org.
Walnut Beach - Fishing access is available from the Ashtabula Harbor’s west breakwater.
Lakeshore Park - Fishing access is provided along the stretch of armored shore and from a 250-foot pier.
Geneva Township Park - Fishing is permitted from the seawall and beach.
There are two public access fishing locations in the Conneaut Township Park: Conneaut Port Authority Access at Naylor Boulevard at Broad Street Extension. This Conneaut Port Authority-managed site is a nearly 1,000-foot, J-shaped breakwater that extends into Conneaut Harbor. Fishing is permitted on the structure’s west side, opposite the marina. Location: End of Broad Street, at Marina Drive.
"Fly fishing in Conneaut Creek for steelhead trout is no longer one of Ashtabula County's best-kept secrets. It's part of what is known as "Steelhead Alley." Conneaut is recognized nationally for its steelhead fishing partly because it is stocked from both Ohio and Pennsylvania."

MEET THE ARTIST
Gillian DiPofi
Ashtabula County native Gillian DiPofi has been making art for as long as she can remember. After moving to Fairport Harbor, she started craving the nostalgia of home and started painting local businesses as a way to feel closer. Her portfolio contains paintings of area wineries and other landmarks, like Eddie's Grill in Geneva-on-the-Lake and the Ashtabula Arts Center.
She enjoys the connection she feels when posting her art to Facebook and someone responds with a memory that they thought of after seeing one of her paintings. "I also enjoy reaching out to the community for input on what to paint next. It helps me stay on track," she said. "There is just something about this area that no where else seems to have."
"I spent most of my later summers working at Madsen Donuts. I have a lot of fond memories there. I think my favorite just has to be spending time with my family by the lake."
Gillian's artwork is sold at Bridge Street Art Works in the Historic Ashtabula Harbor.

reasons to love gotl
Geneva-on-the-Lake offers a delightful mix of activities for families, a friends' getaway, or a couples' escape. After spending one summer weekend there as a family, it was pretty easy to choose our top things to do!
1. STAY AT THE LODGE AT GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE
The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake is one of the region’s premiere hotels for any visit. The beautiful property looks over Lake Erie, features an in-house restaurant and bar, and hosts event spaces. You can use the Lodge as a home base for exploring the region or just relax at its pools or hot tubs. You can later wind down the day by hanging out around the fire pit and roasting the perfect s’more.
2. BIKE YOUR WAY TO THE BEACH
The Lodge offers free bike rentals to follow the trails to Breakwater Beach or head out on the "Strip" of Geneva-on-theLake. Breakwater Beach is part of Geneva State Park, and features public facilities, plenty of space to spread out, and designated swimming areas. We swam during the day and caught a beautiful sunset one night.
3. GO ZIP LINING WITH LAKE ERIE CANOPY TOURS
Lake Erie Canopy Tours is open seasonally and is situated next to The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake. It makes for an exciting outdoor adventure that’s great for all ages. You can sail over the treetops with views of Lake Erie on their zip line course or try one of their Adventure Courses for different ages. We loved that different zip lines covered varying lengths, and that some let you race side-by-side.
4. EXPLORE "THE STRIP"
One of our favorite activities was exploring Geneva-on-the-Lake. The main drag, or "The Strip" features a huge collection of food stands, bars, restaurants, and live music venues. One of our favorite stops was for burgers and fries at Eddie’s Grill. Eddie’s has been serving Geneva-on-the-Lake since 1950. We loved our taste of classic cheeseburgers, crispy fries, cold root beer, and fried fish. You can also pick out sweets at Pucker Up Candy Shoppe, where you can even spin your own ball of cotton candy. And we spent loads of time at Adventure Zone, a big complex of arcade games, go-karts, bumper boats, climbing walls, batting cages, a zip line, and much more!
Judging by the crowds waiting patiently outside the door, Mary’s Kitchen is a
dish up colorful breakfasts like avocado toast with eggs, cinnamon rolls, pancakes topped with fruit, breakfast burritos, biscuits and gravy, and much more. Visit Madsen Donuts, a beloved donut shop that has been serving visitors to Geneva-on-the-Lake since 1938. From their tiny storefront they make everything from scratch daily, and customers line up for longjohns, frosted cake donuts, and glazed yeast donuts. Madsen Donuts is open every day in season, and they scale back their hours to weekends through the end of the year.
6. EXPLORE WINERIES
5. SNAG A LOCAL BREAKFAST
Given my love of breakfast, you better believe I’m going to recommend a local breakfast to start your day! All across Ashtabula County you’ll find everything from easygoing, down-home cooking to elegant brunches.
Just outside Geneva-on-theLake, the Grand River Valley Wine Region is home to 32 wineries, from large-scale operations to small tasting rooms. It’s a popular draw for visitors, to explore the options all throughout the region and bring home a case of the good stuff from Ohio Wine Country. The Old Firehouse Winery in Geneva-on-the-Lake makes the most of its lakeside views. The winery features a large patio where guests can kick back with comfort foods like burgers, fries, and nachos, all while sipping on a wine slushie and listening to some live music. It even features an old Ferris wheel with great views of the lake –and you can still ride it!

Families can challenge each other on go-karts, bumper boats, adventure golf, and arcade games. Zip through the sky on their zipline course or challenge yourself to rock climbing. Little ones can get all their energy out (rain or shine) in the Adventure Krawl tubes, nets, and obstacles. If you need to relax a bit, hop on the 1957 Allan Herschell Carousel – there is nothing more nostalgic than a merry-go-round. Two new escape rooms as well as the vertical seat drop, Hammer Slam, are sure to thrill.
Be sure to stop at Old Firehouse Winery located on the Lake Erie shore. Throughout the year, they host live music, themed craft shows, and seasonal festivals overlooking Lake Erie. Old Firehouse's menu offers family-friendly selections as well as fun drinks for adults, such as wine slushies, frozen margaritas, and wine flights. Be sure to check out the firetruck memorabilia inside and grab a photo in the firetruck at the entrance. During the colder months (NovemberApril), rent a heated igloo and cozy up under twinkling lights.
If you're up for a little family competition, Game On! Arcade & Sports Pub hosts a mix of classic and new arcade games. Collect your tickets and turn them in at the end of the night in exchange for fun prizes!
