Here are some tips to RECREATE RESPONSIBILY to help make your trip the best and safest experience for you and our community. • Be Bear Aware: Take bear spray when hiking and give ALL wildlife at least 25 yards for safety • Know Before You Go: Learn the rules and regulations of where you’re recreating • Leave No Trace: Take only pictures, leave only footprints

• Clean Drain Dry: Clean and dry all equipment after use to limit the spread of invasive species • Care for Your Neighbors: Be kind to each other and give each other space on the trail or water We are so excited for your visit! THE MEADOW

Big Sky, Montana Big Sky is nestled in beautiful Southwest Montana, equidistant between the charming college town of Bozeman, and the West Entrance of Yellowstone National Park, on Hwy 191 covering about 90 miles.

Far from ordinary, closer than you’d think. There are multiple flights from US cities to Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN), Montana’s busiest airport. Most rental car companies are stationed in the main terminal, along with locally owned agencies that will meet you at the pick-up area. There are also several shuttle options to Big Sky, including coach bus transportation, and private or shared rides. (For regional view, see pages 36-37.) 4

Ancient peoples used the Gallatin area for big game hunting and camps. Shoshone tribes (who called themselves Tukudika, or “eaters of meat”), as well as Bannock, Nez Perce, Crow, and others spend their summers in and around Big Sky, using the Cut-tuh-o’gwa (or Swiftwater), our Gallatin River, as a source of fish and plants for food, and the Gallatin Crest Trail as a “highway” for trading and travel.

Two-Wheeling Fun Road biking, mountain biking, or just cruising around town, Big Sky has bike trails for all ages and skill levels. Check out our wellmaintained bike path running through town to the Ousel Falls trailhead. Local bike shops have trail maps and all the gear you’ll need, for rent or for purchase. Mountain Biking Epic singletrack, well-maintained trails, and mountain bike friendly dirt roads can take you to alpine lakes and mountain peaks. Check out the classic Porcupine, Garnet Mountain, Ramshorn Lake, and Mica Creek trails. Some of the best single track and downhill mountain biking is on the slope of Lone Peak at Big Sky Resort, with lift access and a well-kept trail system, and terrain for all levels.

Road Biking Travel Big Sky’s scenic roads and highways, choosing routes that follow the Gallatin Canyon/U.S. Hwy 191 all the way from the Big Sky area into the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park, and on to West Yellowstone. Or pedal from your door to MT Hwy 64/ Lone Mountain Trail.

Year-Round Adventures

Visit Yellowstone National Park Yellowstone Park is open to visitors year-round. During summer months, take a guided tour or go self-guided in your own vehicle. During winter, heavy snowfall closes most of the roads, including the West Yellowstone entrance, but visitors are welcome to explore via skis, snowshoes—or by snowmobile and snowcoach. Take a Hike Hiking is a great way to get out and experience Big Sky’s beautiful trails, any time of year. During summer months, it’s easy to find a hike to match your level of adventurousness—trails weave and connect from the base camp of Big Sky, through the wilderness all the way to Bozeman, Yellowstone National Park, and beyond. In the winter, check out the 1.6 mile hike to beautiful, frozen Ousel Falls, where you might see a few ice climbers, or the 6-mile snowshoe to the splendid mountain views of Beehive Basin.

Big Sky Resort’s famous Tram takes fifteen passengers at a time to the summit of Lone Peak, at 11,166’. Views from the top include two national parks, three states, and many mountain ranges. In the summer months, Big Sky Resort offers a guided Lone Peak Expedition via chairlift, expedition vehicle, and tram. During the winter, the Tram takes skiers to extreme terrain at the top of the mountain and provides scenic upand-down rides for those traveling to the top on foot. Don’t forget your camera!

Yellowstone is a beautiful place under cover of snow. While most of the park roads are closed from October to May, travel by snowmobile, skis, or snowcoach makes for an unforgettable experience! Book a room in the grand Old Faithful Lodge, for the overnight winter adventure of a lifetime.

Seasonal Access During the winter, visitors can drive between the park’s northern entrance at Gardiner, and northeast entrance at Cooke City / Silvergate, while other roads are not maintained by snowplows and closed to vehicle travel. Top Five Camping Tips 1. Camping can be comfortable! With a few gear additions like a tent footprint, sleeping pads, and camp chairs, you don’t have to sacrifice creature comforts for those great outdoor views.

3. Bring games and reading materials. Embrace classic, non-electronic pastimes. A game of cribbage or even the card game War is fun for all ages and will bring families together over the picnic table. 4. Dreading the morning chill? Putting your next-morning clothes in the bottom of your sleeping bag the night before makes that AM transition a lot more pleasant. 5. Store your food in a bearsafe cooler, a bear can, or inside your vehicle. Remember —squirrels, magpies, and even an unattended pup from a neighboring campsite can get into your snacks, too. It’s not just bears! BEARS AND THEIR NOSES: Bears have incredibly strong senses of smell. Store your food, toiletries (toothpaste, etc.) and anything that may put off a scent in a bear-safe storage container, especially when you’re away from your campsite or turning in for the night.
