In the rising age of remote work and virtual meetings, communal work areas
N O N -T R A D I T I O N A L W O R K S PA C E S
are needed more than ever. Coworking spaces allow full-time remote employees and freelancers to get out of their homes for a change of scenery and a more productive environment, and they also allow travelers the opportunity to experience a destination without having to compromise their work schedule and responsibilities. As a city that values being on the cutting-edge of societal advancements, Bloomington offers a variety of remote work spaces for those at the digital forefront.
10
THE MILL 642 N. Madison St.; 812-250-9714; dimensionmill.org The Mill is Bloomington’s sole official coworking space, located downtown in a beautifully restored early 1900s factory. The facility offers 19,000 square-feet of space for startups, small businesses, independent freelancers, and remote workers. Amenities include free WiFi, free printing, free Hopscotch Coffee, a library of tech gear, lockers, permanent desk spaces, and private office spaces. The Mill offers day passes, as well as a variety of membership plans to choose from based on your specific needs. INDIANA MEMORIAL UNION 900 E. 7th St.; 812-856-6381; imu.indiana.edu As Indiana University’s student union, the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) is predominantly used by professors, visiting faculty, and—you guessed it—students. But even those without a relation to the university will find the IMU a great coworking and remote work space. The building features several lounges and café areas, two favorites being the South Lounge and the in-house Starbucks, complete with seating, tables, free guest WiFi, easily-accessible power outlets, several additional dining options, wheelchair-accessible restrooms, and more. GRADUATE BLOOMINGTON HOTEL 210 E. Kirkwood Ave.; 812-994-0500; graduatehotels.com/bloomington For those looking for a more casual work space, consider the Graduate Bloomington Hotel. Home to Poindexter Coffee and a large lounge area with plenty of seating, the hotel welcomes day guests in need of a work-friendly environment. Amenities include free WiFi, a café with an assortment of healthy food & drink options, tables that can accommodate groups of people, and readily-available power outlets.

Bloomington is surrounded by communities that have been offering rich experiences for over 200 years —some similar to those in B-Town, and others unique to their own town. While you’re visiting us, consider taking a day trip to explore our neighbors’ attractions, then come back to Bloomington for our nightlife scene and abundant lodging.
E LLE T T SV I LLE Located just seven miles west of Bloomington, Ellettsville is known for its hometown atmosphere and being the central hub of the local limestone industry. There you’ll find family-style restaurants and great antique shopping, as well as annual special events including the Indiana Limestone Symposium in June, the Monroe County Fall Festival in September, and the Hilly Hundred Bicycle Tour in October.

SMITHVILLE IN THE PARK LABOR DAY CAR SHOW
Also located in the southern part of the county, seven miles from Bloomington, is the town of Smithville. Like Harrodsburg, this town is close to Monroe Lake— on your way to Fairfax State Recreation Area, be sure to stop by the Smithville Saturday Farmers’ Market for fresh produce and locally-made goods. If you’re visiting on Labor Day, don’t miss the Smithville in the Park Labor Day Car Show where you can admire antique automobiles and retro hot rods.
STI N E SV I LLE Incorporated in 1855, this quaint small town is located 11 miles northwest of Bloomington near Ellettsville. 2022 VISITORS GUIDE
SCAN TO FIND MEAL SUGGESTIONS AT EACH OF THESE ICONIC BLOOMINGTON RESTAURANTS.
Bloomington boasts a great many restaurants with mouthwateringly delicious food, but a certain few have reached an iconic status due to their rich history, character, and charm. If you’re looking for the most Bloomington-esque restaurants, the following will deliver the B-Town food experience you’re seeking.
Anyetsang’s Little Tibet Family-owned & operated by a Tibetan refugee and former monk, Anyetsang’s Little Tibet is one of 4th Street’s most popular restaurants—the Dalai Lama himself once dined there during a visit to Bloomington. Prayer flags adorn the restaurant’s patio and interior, along with many photos, artwork, and other mementos celebrating Tibetan culture. BuffaLouie’s Located in the historic Gables building where Hoagy Carmichael wrote the famous jazz hit, “Stardust,” BuffaLouie’s is an Indiana University mainstay located just across from Sample Gates. Every square-inch of the restaurant’s walls are covered in IU memorabilia, which is largely sports-related. The Irish Lion Originally designed as an inn and pub in 1882, The Irish Lion is one of the oldest buildings in Bloomington—several architectural features, including the double doors and surrounding woodwork at the entrance, are original to the building. Its 1800s-style mahogany bar, ornate copper ceiling, and welcoming tavern ambiance offer what feels like an authentic Irish pub experience right here in B-Town. Janko’s Little Zagreb If you’re in the vicinity of The Square during dinnertime, you’ll smell the mouthwatering scent of Janko’s perfectly seared steaks wafting through the streets. A mainstay for IU alumni and students’ visiting families, the restaurant is known for their red and white checkered tablecloths, upscale plates, and casual atmosphere. Mother Bear’s Pizza Awarded Final Four status at the International Pizza Expo, Best Pizza in Indiana by USA Today, and one of America’s Top Nine Pizzarias by People Magazine, Mother Bear’s is Bloomington’s foremost pizza restaurant. Writing your name in Sharpie on the doodle-clad, wood-paneled walls is a rite of passage for incoming university students and visitors alike, making dining at the restaurant more than just mealtime—it’s a Bloomington experience.
Nick’s English Hut Originally opened in 1927, Nick’s English Hut is perhaps Bloomington’s very most iconic and beloved restaurant. Every square-inch of the building’s interior is dedicated to IU memorabilia, from the walls to the booths and even the ceilings. You’d be remiss to not play a round of Sink the Biz, the tavern’s legendary game, during a visit to this Cream & Crimson mainstay. Pizza X You’re unlikely to make it through a visit to Bloomington without hearing about Pizza X. Known for their late-night hours, fast delivery, Little 500 Breadstix special, and iconic plastic cups, the pizza restaurant is extremely popular among university students, nostalgic alumni, and midnight munchers. If you’re craving a slice of ‘za at 2:00 am, Pizza X is the only answer—which is far from a bad thing. Runcible Spoon Named after a children’s story, Runcible Spoon is Bloomington’s most whimsical, cozy coffee roastery-turned-restaurant. The atmosphere is very much professor’s den meets old school hippie’s living room meets English teahouse—in the best way possible. Upland Brewing Company Upland Brewing Company is an accumulation of all the best things about Bloomington: progressive ideas, community, imagination, innovation, and bold flavors, all of which are evident in their beer, food, and brewery atmosphere. One of B-Town’s O.G. brewpubs, Upland is now a nationally-revered beer brand and beloved food destination at its many locations across the state. Uptown Cafe Bringing a New Orleans flair to Kirkwood Avenue for over 40 years, Uptown Cafe is one of Bloomington’s most beloved restaurants. The jazzy bistro features vibrant paintings and an exposed brick wall, offering a bold-yet-inviting ambiance, exuding comfort from the door to the décor to the dish. IU Auditorium This historic limestone entertainment venue holds 3,200 people and hosts off-Broadway productions, concerts, comedians, and talks with notable celebrities each year. It’s also home of the Indiana Murals created by Thomas Hart Benton for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair.
Beck Chapel An extremely popular venue for weddings, especially those of university alumni, Beck Chapel is a small, non-denominational chapel located beside the Indiana Memorial Union. Biology Greenhouse This campus hidden gem houses nearly 800 different species of rainforest, desert, and insectivorous plants, the eldest of which—the sago palm—is over 100 years old. Cox Arboretum What was once the site of IU’s first Memorial Stadium is now an 11-acre arboretum, home to a vast collection of trees & plant life from North America and around the world. Dunn Woods Known as a passion project of former IU President, Herman B Wells, Dunn Woods is a wooded expanse of land located on the original 20 acres of the university grounds. Indiana Memorial Union The IMU—the second-largest student union in the country—is home to The Biddle Hotel & Conference Center, IMU Bowling & Billiards, the campus bookstore, a movie theater, and many restaurants & cafés—including one of the largest Starbucks in the United States.
Rose Well House Located just up the hill from Sample Gates, this charming limestone gazebo stands in front of an expanse of Dunn Woods and is known for its romantic campus tradition of kissing your significant other at midnight under its roof. Sample Gates The most iconic of all Indiana University landmarks, Sample Gates serves as a beautiful limestone gateway, connecting the Hoosier campus and the greater Bloomington community. Showalter Fountain Located at the center of the Fine Arts Plaza, Showalter Fountain features a grand sculpture of the Birth of Venus. The fountain is also known for the legend of the missing fish—after the Hoosiers won the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in 1987, one of the fish was taken, never to be found or returned to this day. Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall The legendary Assembly Hall is the site of Hoosier tradition, lore, victory, and comradery; as a venue with rich basketball history, it’s practically holy ground for college basketball enthusiasts.

A popular destination for students, photographers, alumni, families, and visitors alike, Kirkwood is chockfull of shops, eateries, bars, and picture-perfect views. It’s incredibly easy to spend an entire day on the avenue—which is exactly what we’re suggesting you do.
downtown streets and the university campus, enjoy live music from local artists at People’s Park, shoot pool or throw darts at The Upstairs Pub, and more. For the full Kirkwood Avenue experience, book a stay at the Indiana University-themed Graduate Bloomington Hotel. A foodie’s paradise, there are many delectable dishes and drinks to try at Kirkwood’s numerous eateries: a pint of locally-brewed beer from Bloomington Brewing Company, an authentic gyro from Trojan Horse or Doner Kebab, FARM Bloomington’s award-winning Lugar Burger & FARMfamous Garlic Fries, chicken teriyaki from latenight-favorite Z & C Teriyaki & Sushi, Village Deli’s plate-sized pancakes, New Orleans-style seafood gumbo from Uptown Cafe, a silky homemade scoop from Hartzell’s Ice Cream, and much more.
