COWORKING & REMOTE WORK
In the rising age of remote work and virtual meetings, communal work areas
are needed more than ever. Coworking spaces allow full-time remote employees and freelancers to get out of their homes for a change of scenery and a more productive environment, and they also allow travelers the opportunity to experience a destination without having to compromise their work schedule and responsibilities. As a city that values being on the cutting-edge of societal advancements, Bloomington offers a variety of remote work spaces for those at the digital forefront.
NON-TRADITIONAL WORK SPACES
THE MILL
642 N. Madison St.; 812-250-9714; dimensionmill.org

The Mill offers day passes, as well as a variety of membership plans to choose from based on your specific needs.
INDIANA MEMORIAL UNION
900 E. 7th St.; 812-856-6381; imu.indiana.edu
As Indiana University’s student union, the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) is predominantly used by professors, visiting faculty, and—you guessed it—students. But even those without a relation to the university will find the IMU a great coworking and remote work space. The building features several lounges and café areas, two favorites being the South Lounge and the in-house Starbucks, complete with seating, tables, free guest WiFi, easily-accessible power outlets, several additional dining options, wheelchair-accessible restrooms, and more.
GRADUATE

18 2023 VISITORS GUIDE
.
Bloomington boasts a great many restaurants with mouthwateringly delicious food, but a certain few have reached an iconic status due to their rich history, character, and charm. If you’re looking for the most Bloomington-esque restaurants, the following will deliver the B-Town food experience you’re seeking.
Anyetsang’s Little Tibet
Family-owned & operated by a Tibetan refugee and former monk, Anyetsang’s Little Tibet is one of 4th Street’s most popular restaurants—the Dalai Lama himself once dined there during a visit to Bloomington. Prayer flags adorn the restaurant’s patio and interior, along with many photos, artwork, and other mementos celebrating Tibetan culture.
BuffaLouie’s
Located in the historic Gables building where Hoagy Carmichael wrote the famous jazz hit, “Stardust,” BuffaLouie’s is an Indiana University mainstay located just across from Sample Gates. Every square-inch of the restaurant’s walls are covered in IU memorabilia, which is largely sports-related.
The Trojan Horse Specializing in Greek and American food, this cozy two story restaurant with booth-lined walls has offered the best in Greek dishes and tasty cocktails for over 44 years. Add Baklava for dessert and you’ll see why it has been a staple in Bloomington for so long.
Janko’s Little Zagreb
If you’re in the vicinity of The Square during dinnertime, you’ll smell the mouthwatering scent of Janko’s perfectly seared steaks wafting through the streets. A mainstay for IU alumni and students’ visiting families, the restaurant is known for their red and white checkered tablecloths, upscale plates, and casual atmosphere.
Mother Bear’s Pizza Awarded Final Four status at the International Pizza Expo, Best Pizza in Indiana by USA Today, and one of America’s Top Nine Pizzarias by People Magazine, Mother Bear’s is Bloomington’s foremost pizza restaurant. Writing your name in Sharpie on the doodle-clad, wood-paneled walls is a rite of passage for incoming university students and visitors alike, making dining at the restaurant more than just mealtime—it’s a Bloomington experience.
Nick’s English Hut
Originally opened in 1927, Nick’s English Hut is perhaps Bloomington’s very most iconic and beloved restaurant. Every square-inch of the building’s interior is dedicated to IU memorabilia, from the walls to the booths and even the ceilings. You’d be remiss to not play a round of Sink the Biz, the tavern’s legendary game, during a visit to this Cream & Crimson mainstay.
Pizza X
You’re unlikely to make it through a visit to Bloomington without hearing about Pizza X. Known for their late-night hours, fast delivery, Little 500 Breadstix special, and iconic plastic cups, the pizza restaurant is extremely popular among university students, nostalgic alumni, and midnight munchers. If you’re craving a slice of ‘za at 2:00 am, Pizza X is the only answer—which is far from a bad thing.
Runcible Spoon
Named after a children’s story, Runcible Spoon is Bloomington’s most whimsical, cozy coffee roastery-turned-restaurant. The atmosphere is very much professor’s den meets old school hippie’s living room meets English teahouse—in the best way possible.
Upland Brewing Company
Upland Brewing Company is an accumulation of all the best things about Bloomington: progressive ideas, community, imagination, innovation, and bold flavors, all of which are evident in their beer, food, and brewery atmosphere. One of B-Town’s O.G. brewpubs, Upland is now a nationally-revered beer brand and beloved food destination at its many locations across the state.
Uptown Cafe
Bringing a New Orleans flair to Kirkwood Avenue for over 40 years, Uptown Cafe is one of Bloomington’s most beloved restaurants. The jazzy bistro features vibrant paintings and an exposed brick wall, offering a bold-yet-inviting ambiance, exuding comfort from the door to the décor to the dish.

Enjoy Kirkwood Avenue
Kirkwood Avenue
66 2023 VISITORS GUIDE
Kirkwood Avenue is the most iconic street in Bloomington. Bold statement, we know, but considering its grand entrance into Indiana University’s campus through the famous Sample Gates and lineup of legendary bars & restaurants, it simply can’t be denied. A popular destination for students, photographers, alumni, families, and visitors alike, Kirkwood is chockfull of shops, eateries, bars, and picture-perfect views. It’s incredibly easy to spend an entire day on the avenue—which is exactly what we’re suggesting you do.
A foodie’s paradise, there are many delectable dishes and drinks to try at Kirkwood’s numerous eateries: a pint of locally-brewed beer from Lennie’s, an authentic gyro from Trojan Horse or Doner Kebab, FARM Bloomington’s award-winning Lugar Burger & FARMfamous Garlic Fries, build your own burrito at late night favorite Chubbies Diner, Village Deli’s plate-sized pancakes, New Orleansstyle seafood gumbo from Uptown Cafe, a silky homemade scoop from Hartzell’s Ice Cream, and much more.
There’s no lack of entertainment on Kirkwood Avenue either. Play a game of Sink the Biz at Nick’s English Hut, see a show at the historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater, shop for an IU souvenir at one of Kirkwood’s local stores, admire various public murals and art installations, explore nearby downtown streets and the
university campus, enjoy live music from local artists at People’s Park, shoot pool or throw darts at The Upstairs Pub, and more.
For the full Kirkwood Avenue experience, book a stay at the Indiana University-themed Graduate Bloomington Hotel. The interior is decorated with a variety of interesting IU memorabilia, including a cheeky chandelier of suspended red chairs as a nod to former IU Basketball Coach, Bobby Knight, a massive painting of the basketball team in the movie Hoosiers, framed sheet music for Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust,” bicycle-motif wallpaper and Cutters tapestries in honor of the Little 500, basketball hoop light fixtures, and more.
No visit to Kirkwood Avenue is complete without taking a photo at Sample Gates—snap a shot of you and your fellow travelers by the university icon to commemorate your visit to Bloomington before you head back home.

As the heart of downtown, The Square is one of Bloomington’s most popular areas. Centered around the Monroe County Courthouse, The Square is home to over 30 locally-owned businesses, which include clothing boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, book stores, cafés, salons, and more. With a variety of dining, shopping, and entertainment offerings, it’s easy to find yourself spending an entire day there.
Treat yourself to retail therapy by picking out artisan-made goods at Gather:handmade shoppe & co., refreshing your kitchenware at Goods for Cooks, discovering a new staple wardrobe item at Mirth, updating your outdoor gear at J.L. Waters & Co., surprising a loved one with a present from Global Gifts, finding a new piece of home décor at Lola + Co., or adding to your music collection with a vinyl record, CD, or LP from Landlocked Music .
Entertainment is abundant around The Square as well—admire locally-crafted art at By Hand Gallery and GallerySCG , see if you can solve an escape room at The Code & Key Escape Rooms, play pinball at Orbit Room, discover nearly 30 downtown hidden gems on surrounding streets, take a photo in front of Fountain Square Mall’s pink wall, and enjoy live music at The Tap or one of several nearby music venues, including The Bluebird and The Bishop Bar.
The experience wouldn’t be complete without checking out The Square’s eateries. Delight in authentic Afghan cuisine at Samira , enjoy vegan comfort food at The Owlery, savor an upscale California-style meal at Malibu Grill, grab a cup of locally-roasted coffee and a homemade poptart at The Inkwell Bakery & Café, sip some of the best margaritas in town at Social Cantina , and more.
Extend your exploration of downtown Bloomington by booking a stay at a hotel in the area—there’s much else to discover outside of The Square, including the B-Line Trail , WonderLab Museum , Comedy Attic , 4th Street , Monroe County History Center, and more.

The Bluebird
The Bluebird is Bloomington’s premier music venue—some even consider it a musical institution and sacred stage. They book iconic artists such as Jimmy Eat World and Blues Traveler, cover bands including Hairbangers Ball and Back to Mac, and local artists like Hank Ruff and Fat Pockets.
Buskirk-Chumley Theater
Originally built in 1922 as a silent-movie house and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater has been beautifully restored and now serves as a venue for musical performances, local festivals, theater & dance productions, film screenings, and standup comedy.
The Comedy Attic
The Comedy Attic, Bloomington’s first and only full-time comedy club, is one of the most respected comedy venues in the country. The Attic’s stage has been graced by Amy Schumer, Melissa Villaseñor, Marc Maron, Bobcat Goldthwait, and many more, making it one of the most esteemed performance venues in the area.
Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University
The Eskenazi Museum of Art is a work of art itself—designed by I.M. Pei, the architect behind the Louvre Pyramid, the museum has no 90-degree angles except where structurallynecessary. Throughout seven galleries, there are over 45,000 objects available for observation, accessible to the public at no admission cost.
IU Auditorium
The IU Auditorium is a stunningly grand building constructed out of locally-quarried Indiana limestone. Visitors are greeted by the historic Indiana Murals created by Thomas Hart Benton for the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair as they walk through the auditorium doors, then are wowed by the lavish theater’s grand size and rich shades of cream, crimson, and gold.
Lilly Library
The Lilly Library is an internationally-revered collection of millions of cultural & literary artifacts that document some of humanity’s highest achievements, available for observation & admiration to all in Bloomington, incredibly, at no cost. The museum boasts over 460,000 books, 8.5 million manuscripts, 120,000 items of sheet music, and thousands of other items.
Monroe County Courthouse
Standing in the center of The Square since 1907, the Monroe County Courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. The limestone building is a source of community pride and commitment to historic preservation, boasting architectural beauty with its ornate Beaux Arts exterior and intricate muraled dome—a work of art to be admired from inside the courthouse.
Monroe County History Center
The Monroe County History Center strives to collect, interpret, and present the genealogy, history, and artifacts of Monroe County in order to best depict the heritage & culture of the community. The museum is located in a historical building that was previously a Carnegie Library, and before that, a school for Black children in late 1800s & early 1900s.
Musical Arts Center
IU’s Musical Arts Center is one of the most state-of-the-art performance venues in the United States, featuring the second-largest stage area in the country—second only to New York City’s Metropolitan Opera. The venue hosts ballets, operas, and musical performances by the Jacobs School of Music, seating nearly 1,500 guests during any given event.
Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center
Frequently visited by the Dalai Lama, Buddhist teachers, and scholars from around the world, the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center is the United States’ hub for Tibetan & Mongolian culture, art, and history.
