AMALIENBORG Amalienborg is the official residence of the Danish royal family and actually consists of four almost identical palaces around an octagonal courtyard. Queen Margrethe and Henrik, the Prince Consort, live in Schack’s Palace, while Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary have been living in Brockdorff’s Palace since 2010, when the palace was restored. The other two palaces are used for representation and ceremonial functions. Levetzau’s Palace also holds the Amalienborg Museum. Amalienborg is guarded by the Royal Life Guards. You can witness the changing of the guard every day at noon.

DESIGN MUSEUM DENMARK Design Museum Denmark is Denmark’s largest museum for Danish and international design and a central exhibition forum for industrial design and applied arts in Scandinavia. Right now you can enjoy the special exhibition “Post War British Textiles”, which displays 17 printed British textiles, which were designed in the post-war years, when England became one of the leading European countries in the field of textile design. The museum’s collections, library and archives constitute a central resource center for the study of design and its history in Denmark. The museum brings together and documents the contemporary developments within industrial design, decorative and applied arts.

DEN FRIE – CENTRE OF CONTEMPORARY ART Den Frie is the artists’ own house and aims to show exhibitions that are produced, initiated and chosen by artists alone. Due to its artist driven structure, it operates as an experimental frame for art exhibitions and related activities. Den Frie’s overall task is to act as a platform for artistic divergence and is therefore situated in the tension field between tradition and innovation.

As a tourist you can also enjoy the benefits of shopping taxfree, so a good bargain should be within your reach.

A.C. ILLUM – A TRENDSETTER ILLUM’s history dates back to 1891, when a newspaper ad proclaimed that a store for apparel and garments was about to open in Copenhagen. “The store will carry the largest selection of anything related to the industry,” said the ad, which was signed A. C. Illum. Anton Carl Illum was a skilled businessman and had foreseen the growing demand for tangible products and the change in consumer behaviour in Copenhagen. That’s why ILLUM quickly became a popular place for the Copenhageners to shop and has maintained its position until today.

Logo from a love letter ILLUM’s logo with the two swallows originates from the love letters between A. C. Illum and his fiancé Marie Andersen. He proposed to her in a letter, and in her reply was a vignette of two flying swallows – and of course the answer “yes”. After that, A. C. Illum decided to make the swallows the trademark of his store.

Take a guided tour of the workshop at Rud. Rasmussen ‘s Joineries and experience, how the world famous Danish design classics are made, using the same techniques and methods that were also used a hundred years ago. 

BACK TO THE OLD VIRTUES OF BAC

CRAFTSMANSHIP By Maria Præst Take a deep breath and enjoy the scent of drying wood and fresh leather, while you listen to the sound of good old craftsmanship as the cabinet makers hammer, whet and polish. Every Friday at noon you can go on a guided tour of the workshop at Rud. Rasmussen’s Joineries, where art furniture is made with a care and consideration that leaves no detail unattended. Just show up at the workshop in Nørrebro in Copenhagen. No booking is necessary. There’s also a store and a showroom where you can see the finished chairs, sofas and tables and decide if they would suit your own living room.

TIMELESS DESIGN THAT LASTS FOR GENERATIONS If you buy a chair, designed by Kaare Klint, H. J. Wegner, or one of the other classic Danish furniture designers, you don’t just buy a chair for yourself, you buy a piece of furniture that can be passed on for generations and be of use to your children and grandchildren as well.

The wear and tear over the years will only highlight the beauty of the materials, such as wood and leather. Classic Danish furniture design remains high in demand all over the world. The secret behind the staying power lies in the timeless design and the superb craftsmanship. Rud. Rasmussen’s Joineries have collaborated with the most gifted Danish furniture designers through decades and made their visions come true in the highest quality imaginable.

EXCELLENT CRAFTSMANSHIP Forget about mass production by assembly lines: The tables, chairs and bookcases from Rud. Rasmussen’s Joineries are made in the exact opposite manner. Here, world famous design classics are being carefully crafted by highly skilled cabinet makers.

 Free guided tour 

Guided tours of the workshop every Friday at noon. No booking necessary - just show up!

Continued from page 15 The wood for the furniture is carefully selected and then left to dry for up to a year in the drying cellar, before it is cut and fitted. The processed wood elements are assembled to furniture in the joinery, and the wood is sanded and polished to get the right finish. There’s also an upholstery where the frames for sofas and armchairs are being upholstered. The leather covers can be made of oxhide or niger hide, which is leather from goats living near the Niger River. The last step of the process is a thorough quality check where every detail is controlled to make sure it lives up to standard.

DESIGNER AND CABINET MAKER WORKING TOGETHER Rud. Rasmussen’s Joineries have produced art furniture since 1869 and is one of the eldest Danish cabinet makers still producing. The company was founded by Rudolph Rasmussen and since then it has been passed on from generation to generation. One of the trademarks of Rud. Rasmussen is the close collaboration between the furniture designer and cabinet maker. Furniture from designers such as Kaare Klint, Mogens Koch and Poul Kjærholm are made at Rud. Rasmussen Joineries. They all had a significant impact on the rise of Danish design and their timeless styles remain relevant today. That’s why Rud. Rasmussen Joineries have caught the attention of international magazines such as Monocle and Architectural Digest.

SOMETHING FOR YOU? In the Rud. Rasmussen showroom and store you can find inspiration on how to furnish your own home. The staff is experienced and always ready to assist you in choosing the right furniture and how to care for materials such as wood, textiles and leather. So if you happen to be in the colourful neighbourhood Nørrebro, stop by the store and try out the beautiful furniture.

 Danish design classics 

In the 1950ies, Danish furniture design became world renowned. Today, the minimalist wood furniture known as Danish Modern still attracts new customers. Here, three of the most famous pieces. THE ADDITION SOFA BY KAARE KLINT The architect Kaare Klint (1888-1954) was a firm believer in functionality and simple, honest aesthetics. I 1933 he designed his Addition Sofa, a design, which appears streamlined and timeless and gives the room an elegant touch. He was originally inspired by a French rococo sofa but simplified it with light, moveable parts. THE Y-CHAIR BY H.J. WEGNER Hans Jørgen Wegner (1914-2007) was a highly productive furniture designer who has designed about 500 chairs. In 1949 he finished the Y-chair, a light, sculptural dining chair, which gave him his international breakthrough. It has been produced without interruption since 1950. THE BOOKCASE BY MOGENS KOCH Architect Mogens Koch (1898-1992) had a special talent for combining function and aesthetics in his furniture. Among his most famous designs is his bookcase system that is an icon today for design lovers worldwide. The unique craftsmanship, fine details and timeless design from 1930 also appeal to new generations today.

GOURMET COPENHAGEN

Follow the stars 

The Copenhagen cuisine is world famous for it’s high quality and can now present 15 Michelin Stars shared among 13 restaurants, which makes it the Nordic capital with most starred restaurants. So, are you looking for the meal of your lifetime? Read this guide and let the stars lead the way.

18

TICKET TO COPENHAGEN

By Maria Præst The culinary scene in Copenhagen is thriving with new, inventive restaurants popping up everywhere – and old ones continuing to reinvent themselves. Common for them all is the focus on high quality with a personal touch, which has lead to a noble positioning in the Guide Michelin 2013. Copenhagen is now the Nordic capital with the most Michelin-starred restaurants counting 11 restaurants with one star and two restaurants with two stars. The Michelin Star is a hallmark of fine dining quality – which is pretty funny considering that Michelin is, in fact, a tire company. The Michelin-company launched its first guidebook in 1900 to encourage road tripping in France, and has anonymously reviewed restaurants with a three-star system since 1926. But what does these stars actually mean? One star is given to a very good restaurant in its category, two stars are for excellent cooking worth a detour and three stars are for exceptional cuisine worth a special journey. Among the news in Denmark this year is restaurant Kadeau being awarded with a star for the first time, and restaurant Geranium taking up a score by receiving its second Michelin Star. Get introduced to the two newcomers here.

GERANIUM – NOW CATCHING UP WITH NOMA Restaurant noma still triumphs as the world’s best restaurant, but this year they’ve got competition from Restaurant Geranium. Geranium is the home of the world’s best chef, Rasmus Kofoed, and is considered a light, bright and dynamic cuisine. Yet still a new Nordic cuisine, where razor clam, oysters, heather, juniper, seaweed, sheep butter, lamb, elderberries, prunes and pine needles are among some of the exciting ingredients you can experience.

The restaurant is situated ated on the 8th floor in “Fælledparken” (Common Gardens) ns) in the centre of Copenhagen, from where you can enjoy the view of the tree crowns, Copenhagen roof tops and the e windmills of the Sound. While noma is fully booked for months and months ahead, it is possible to get a table at Geranium with just a few days’ notice.

KADEAU – A TASTE OF IDYLLIC BORNHOLM Restaurant Kadeau on Christianshavn is the only new restaurant to get a Michelin Star in Denmark this year. Dining here is like tasting a little piece of Bornholm. Kadeau is run by three islanders from Bornholm and is based on the three guys’ love for their native heritage and proud culinary traditions. The food is directly dictated by the changing Danish seasons and is primaryly made from local ingredients – wild herbs, berries and fungus have been picked from the beaches and forests of Bornholm. Visit the restaurant and look forward to tasting exciting dishes like blue mussels with Swedish turnip and egg yolk, tongue of lamb with wild garlic and lemon verbena and selected Danish cheeses with honey. The best part is that you actually are able to get a table here, if you can plan just a few days ahead. So why not grasp the opportunity to try the best of what Copenhagen cuisine has to offer – at Kadeau, Geranium or one of the 11 other star restaurants.

Listen up! By Maria Præst

Are you in the mood for a concert, you’ve come to the right place. Copenhagen is filled with quality music venues, where you can listen to both big international stars and local upcoming bands. 

TIVOLI FRIDAY ROCK

LOPPEN CHRISTIANIA

Every Friday from April until September, you can experience Danish and international artists at Friday Rock in the old amusement park, Tivoli. The concerts are held outdoor, where you can enjoy the music while surrounded by the beautiful lights in the garden and joyful screams from the amusements. Love Shop, Nabiha, TV-2 and Editors (UK) are among the many artists performing at Tivoli during springtime. Once you’ve paid the entrance ticket, the concerts are free of charge.

Feel like trying something different tonight? Then you should go to one of Loppen’s funky underground concerts. This small and intimate music venue has room for 400 people and is situated in the free town Christiania on Christianshavn. There are concerts almost every day at 21 o’clock and the prices are very reasonable. The performances vary from reggae, metal, punk, indie rock to folk from both international and Danish artists.

VEGA Vega on Vesterbro is considered one of the best music venues in Denmark. It has room enough for some of Scandinavia’s largest names to drop by and is still small enough to stay intimate. The classic yet cool décor is worth a visit alone, but what if you could listen to artists like Mads Langer, The Knife or Eaggerstunn at the same time? After the concert you can continue the evening at Vega’s Ideal Bar at street level, which is the perfect setting for a night out in Copenhagen.

JAZZHOUSE In a cosy basement in central Copenhagen, you’ll find JazzHouse. This is where the local jazz enthusiasts get together for concerts with jazz stars from around the world. Take a seat at one of the small tables, order your favourite drink from the bar, sit back and enjoy everything from funk jazz to fusion, Nordic, free or modern jazz. JazzHouse also presents alternative concert experiences such as Nightjazz or Jazz’n’Poetry.

22

TICKET TO COPENHAGEN

RUST Rust is a solid music venue on Nørrebro, which is used both as a sitting box for upcoming talents and as an intimate venue for established artists. There are concerts every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, primarily with artists within indie rock, indie pop, hiphop and electronica. In April and May you can among others experience the Danish upcoming electro-pop trio Panamah or the American r’n’b-crooner Autre Ne Veut, whose latest album was named Best New Music by Pitchfork.

PUMPEHUSET Pumpehuset is situated in the very heart of Copenhagen and presents a wide range of concerts, all with the purpose of covering the various angles of modern, urban subculture. It holds two venues with and overall capacity of 600 people. You can for example let Pumpehuset introduce you to one of the strongest existing names in Danish Rock, The Floor Is Made of Lava, the Danish kings of dancehall, Klumben & Raske Penge, or the legendary American singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier. Did you know? Get your facts straight about...

Denmark, the Danes

and Copenhagen

Denmark is widely known as the fairytale land of Hans Christian Andersen and the home of Carlsberg, LEGO and Shakespeare’s Hamlet. But there is more to Denmark than that. What do you know about Denmark, the Danes and Copenhagen? Test your knowledge or learn a new thing or two. 

By Jon Bjerre

DENMARK IS... a happy nation of 5.5 million people, 1.2 million of whom live in Copenhagen. According to the United Nation’s World Happiness Report 2012, the Danes are the happiest people in the world. The ranking is based on a variety of factors including health, family and job security as well as social factors like political freedom and lack of governmen corruption.

THE WORD “DENMARK”... can be traced back to the Viking age and is carved on the famous Jelling Stone from around 900 AD. Between the 13th and 17th centuries, Denmark was a superpower, whose influence matched that of the largest European countries. Even though the influence of Denmark is considerably smaller these days, Denmark takes the lead in areas such as architecture, farming, design, green technology and pharmaceuticals.

COPENHAGEN WAS FOUNDED... in the 11th century, but it did not become the capital of Denmark until the beginning of the 15th century. International media outlets have repeatedly recognized Copenhagen as one of the best cities to live in. The capital is considered one of the world’s most environmentally friendly cities, due to its clean harbor, abundance of green areas and great biking facilities.

THE DANISH MONARCHY... is over 1000 years old, making it the oldest monarchy in Europe. The current monarch, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II, can thus trace her lineage back to the first Viking king, ‘Gorm the Old’ who died in 958. Today, Denmark is a constitutional monarchy, which essentially means that the Queen has no political power. As a figurehead, the Queen opens exhibitions, attends anniversaries, carries out charity work and represents Denmark abroad.

28

The Queen is very popular in Denmark and every year hundreds of people gather in front of Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen to wish her a happy birthday. The royal family consists of Queen Margrethe II and her husband the Royal Consort Prince Henrik. Their son, Crown Prince Frederik, is married to Crown Princess Mary and together they have four children. The Crown Prince’s little brother, Prince Joachim, is married to Princess Marie and together they have two children. Prince Joachim also has two children from a previous marriage.

THE MAJORITY OF DENMARK... is quite flat. In fact, the highest points are the pylons holding the Great Belt Bridge connecting Zealand and Funen, rising 254 meters above sea level. In comparison, the highest natural point in Denmark is only 170 meters above sea level. IF YOU ENJOY THE SOUND... of crashing waves, you are in the right place. Denmark has one of Europe’s longest coastlines, amounting to a staggering 7,314 km. No matter where you go within the country you will never be more than 50 km from a beach or a harbor.

THE DANES LOVE GREEN More than 20 percent of Denmark’s energy comes from renewable energy and the goal is to reach 100 percent by 2050. Today, much of the renewable energy comes from wind turbines, in which Denmark is a world leader in developing new technologies. Copenhagen is a role model for many of the world’s biggest cities when it comes to sustainable urban development. The capital intends to become carbon neutral by 2025 and expects to reduce carbon emissions by 20 percent as early as 2015.

Danish design and architecture... ...is known and cherished all over the world. From the famous Sydney Opera House designed by Jørn Utzon, to the world’s best residential house in 2011 awarded to architect Bjarke Ingels for ‘8 House’ in Copenhagen. Industrial design, furniture and aesthetic objects have always been some of Denmark’s biggest exports. Famous Danish designers include: Børge Mogensen, Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Poul Henningsen and Verner Panton.

By Maria Præst The Round Tower was built in 1642 by the Danish nish king Chr Christian IV and is one of the most popular sights in Denmark. mark. It I is first and foremost famous for its excellent views, but that’s not all the tower has to offer.

BLINDED BY THE LIGHTS From the moment you go through its portal you find yourself in a treasure trove of light cast by all of the many windows in the whitewashed Spiral Ramp that leads all the way to the top. The ramp winds seven and a half times round the core of the tower and there is no lift so you have to walk all the way.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF H. C. ANDERSEN Half-way up you’ll find the beautiful old 900 m² Library Hall, which was one of the world-famous author Hans Christian Andersen’s favourite places. The tower itself also featured in his fairy tale The Tinder Box. Today, the Library is a gallery, concert venue and the home of the tower’s gift shop and café.

THE TOWER OF LOVE The romantic settings of the Round Tower have always been a popular venue for lovers. Each of the hearts, names and dates scratched into the glass of the windows tell their own story of a young man proposing to his sweetheart close to the sky and with the city at his feet. Are you feeling the love yet? Otherwise, take a seat on the red Kissing Bench before climbing the last stretch of the staircase.

EUROPE’S OLDEST OBSERVATORY Astronomy was particularly popular in the 17th century, and the royal astronomer suggested to King Christian IV that he built a tower with an observatory on top. Today, it is Europe’s oldest functioning observatory, and visitors are able to gaze at the cosmos all year round.

CALENDER ART & EXHIBITIONS LOUISIANA MUSEUM OF MODERN ART GL. STRANDVEJ 13, 3050 HUMLEBÆK POP ART DESIGN February 22 - June 9 2013 Wild, witty, bold, colourful and sexy, the Pop movement of the post-war years never ceases to fascinate. Louisiana’s major spring exhibition marks the first extensive showcasing of the interrelation between artists and designers 1955-1972, where the dialogue between art and design in fact was massive and has been of crucial importance to the influence of Pop Art ever since. Pop Art Design features some 180 works, many of them icons in their field. LOUISIANA CONTEMPORARY - Tara Donovan February 8 - May 20 2013 Tara Donovan uses a variety of everyday materials such as drinking straws, nails and buttons as a basis for her works. She chooses pieces of one material that she assembles, glues and stacks one above the other, or otherwise repeats or accumulates into a form that offers entirely new and unexpected experiences. In the process she transforms everyday materials into aesthetic sculptures or landscape-like installations in an organic formal idiom that is often close to nature. YOKO ONO - HALF-A-WIND SHOW A Retrospective 7 June - 29 September 2013 Yoko Ono is one of the most prominent artists of our time. In 2013 she will be 80, and to mark the occasion Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is showing a major retrospective exhibition with a selection of the artist’s characteristic works, demonstrating the diversity of media and disciplines in Yoko Ono’s artistic production, and illustrating the central themes with which Yoko Ono continues to work vitally in her lifelong oeuvre.

DEN FRIE OSLO PLADS 1, 2100 KØBENHAVN Ø ENTROPIA: Marianne Jørgensen’s Solo Exhibition April 13 – May 19 2013 It is with great pleasure that we present a comprehensive solo exhibition by artist Marianne Jørgensen – an exhibition where nature sprouts inside and the art crawls under your skin. The focal points of the exhibition ENTROPIA are the outskirts and urbanity, as well as lifestyle patterns and a connection to one’s surroundings and Earth. Through ground explosions, dream holes, miniature models of society, video installations and sound, Marianne Jørgensen addresses a number of issues related to urban planning, neighbourhood, housings and also how and why we organize ourselves the way we do. Confrontation May 25 – June 23 2013 Confrontation takes its focal point from Terry Zwigoff’s 1994 film Crumb, which in turn was based on the American artist Robert Crumb. Crumb’s universe is a perverted and sexually fixated place which could be envisioned as a kind of collision between a 50s sexual suppression and a worship of consumer culture. Work from approximately 20 living and deceased artists has been selected and assembled for the exhibition by artists Zven Balslev and Claus Ejner. Place is the Space June 29 – August 4 2013 This year’s summer exhibition, presented by Sören Brøgger and Sören Hüttel, puts the most current trends in contemporary art on centre stage. Place is the Space examines how the relationship between science fiction and visual art fairs today. The science fiction genre is often used as a means to open up alternate spaces in which different social, political and personal circumstances can be explored.

DESIGNMUSEUM DANMARK BREDGADE 68, 1260 KØBENHAVN K POST WAR BRITISH TEXTILES January 12 - September 1 2013 Designmuseum Danmark exhibits seventeen printed British textiles from the years between 1952 and 1972, all from a group commonly known as ‘Post-War British Textiles’. The textiles were designed in the post-war years, when England became one of the leading European countries in the field of textile design with prominent designers and artists whose works were a powerful source of inspiration for Danish textile designers, among others. The exhibition features textiles by leading designers including Lucienne Day, Marian Mahler, Jacqueline Groag, Barbara Brown, Robert Stewart, Shirley Craven and Victor Vasarely. ARCHITECTURAL ROUNDS March 28 - June 9 2013 Architectural Rounds is an exhibition of contemporary Danish art. The idea is to show site-specific pieces that reflect a dialogue with the specific space they are exhibited in. In this case the spaces are Silkeborg Bad, formerly thermal baths, and Designmuseum Danmark, a rococo building in Frederiksstaden, the former King Frederik’s Hospital. The artists represented in the exhibition are: Ceramist Karen Bennicke, artist Kaspar Bonnén, glasartist Lene Bødker, artist Ruth Campau, architect Poul Ingemann, weaver Gudrun Pagter and artist Jesper Rasmussen. KAJ FRANCK - TEEMA WITH VARIATIONS April 6 - December 30 2013 Kaj Franck (1911-1989) designed numerous domestic items that beautified the times of the post-war years in homes not only in Finland, but far and wide. It was beautiful, simple and functional design which quickly became a popular household item. Franck’s life’s work unfolds between unique and mass production, between the artistic and the industrial – as a comprehensive theme with many variations. Central to the production is the timeless crockery ‘Teema’.

KUNSTFORENINGEN GL. STRAND GL. STRAND 48, 1202 KØBENHAVN K FLOWER AND CIGAR. Modernism from ARoS January 26 - May 12 2013 Artists represented in the exhibition: Ebba Carstensen, Franciska Clausen, Harald Giersing, Karl Isakson, Carl Jensen, Jens Adolf Jerichau, Svend Johansen, Vilhelm Lundstrøm, Albert Naur, Olaf Rude, William Scharff, Christine Swane, Sigurd Swane and Edvard Weie. The exhibition FLOWER AND CIGAR. Modernism from ARoS presents the most innovative of Danish art from the first part of the 20th Century and from an entirely new perspective. That is with a focus on the masculine and feminine, sex and all that comes with it. The gender perspective from this period of time forms a continuous thread to the exhibition, where the modernist ideals are confronted with today’s feminine and masculine fantasies and idealizations. HENRIK VIBSKOV, NECK PLUS ULTRA, ART MOVES #3 May 25 – September 8 2013 GL STRAND presents the first major solo exhibition in Denmark by artist, musician, and designer Henrik Vibskov. Henrik Vibskov works in a unique inter-aesthetical field that cuts across design, music, performance, stage- and installation art. Rapidly he has achieved international recognition for his innovative multimedia art experiments, and his spectacular fashion collections, and -shows. In GL STRAND’s exhibition Vibskov unfolds his creative excess when he transforms the gallery’s entire first and second floor into one vast installation. NECK PLUS ULTRA will be a comprehensive gesamtkunstwerk dissolving the traditional boundaries between art genres: music, sculpture, design, and film are thus incorporated on equal footing with imagery, photography, fashion, set design and audio.

The exhibition marks the collaboration with Iittala, which we also would like to thank for endowing our ‘Klint – The Design Museum café’ with the beautiful ‘Kaj Franck’ crockery.
