of perfection This year, Klarlund of Copenhagen celebrates its 65th anniversary as the place to go for fine watches and jewellery.

A true treasury The exhibition will be held on October 25th to 27th. For the first two days the exhibition is restricted to VIP’s and invited guests, but on the last day it is open to the public. Some of the most expensive and advanced models of mechanical watches from luxury brands such as Rolex, Cartier and Vacheron Constantin will be displayed. The guests will also be updated on the latest trends in watchmaking and jewellery, and they can meet some of the most gifted experts within the field. It is the first time that a collection of this size and quality is showcased in Denmark.

By Louise Fogh Hansen Tick, tock. How time flies by: Now 65 years have passed since watchmaker Poul Klarlund opened his first store for fine watches and jewellery in Copenhagen. Since then, Klarlund has provided luxury watches for ambitious business men, helped couples in love choose the perfect wedding rings and showcased fine cut diamond jewellery for everyone with a taste for timeless extravagance. A history like that is surely worth celebrating and Klarlund does it in a way, that matches the high quality and luxury of the products. Grand exhibition of luxury watches and jewellery The anniversary is celebrated with a coffee table book and a grand exhibition, the Klarlund Fine Watch and Jewellery Exhibition 2012. It will be held in the grand settings of Børsen, the old stock exchange and one of the architectural landmarks of the city with its dragon spire, shaped as four dragon tails twined together. Børsen is just as remarkable on the inside and sets the perfect background for the many luxury watches and exclusive jewels and gemstones that will be on display.

Highly skilled watchmakers take care of the clockwork Making watches is more like a science than a craft, and in the Klarlund stores, the staff knows every inch of every product. Klarlund has a watchmaker’s workshop, authorised to repair watches from brands such as Rolex and Omega. Here, watches are restored and repaired by skilled watchmakers who test the accuracy of the watches and make sure that every single detail is in order. In the workshop more than 2.000 watches are inspected each year by seven dedicated watchmakers. Each watch is disassembled and every little spring, gear and screw is removed and inspected separately. This is your guarantee, that you will always get the best service and advice from the staff in the Klarlund stores. Check out engagement rings on your smart phone Times have changed since the opening of the first Klarlund store back in 1947. Today you don’t even have to go to the stores to get a peek inside the Klarlund universe. Download the app “Forever by Klarlund” to your smartphone and browse through the catalogue of engagement- and weddingrings. The app also includes a guide to the different cuts and colours of diamonds and an introduction to Danish wedding traditions. You can also follow Klarlund on Facebook, where you can read all about the latest events and competitions and see which celebrities are flashing a luxury watch on the red carpet.

The staff at Klarlund is very skilled and experienced in the fine art of evaluating diamonds. Here is their advice on how to take care of the precious stones. STORE YOUR DIAMOND JEWELLERY SEPARATELY A diamond is the hardest known natural material, so it won’t get scratches from other materials, but diamonds can still cause scratches on each other. That’s why you should store them separately. CLEAN YOUR DIAMONDS FREQUENTLY Hand lotion, hair products and the likes can leave residue. Make your diamonds sparkle again with a professional jewellery cleaning at Klarlund, or, alternatively, with a bowl of water and a bit of dish soap. Brush the diamonds carefully with a soft toothbrush, and then rinse the jewellery in running water. Finally wipe the jewellery with a soft cloth.

Nørrebro is Copenhagen’s multicultural melting pot.

NØRRE

-BRO

PHOTOS: SCANPIX

Nørrebro is Copenhagen’s multicultural melting pot. Here you have kebab shops next door to designer shops and coffee shops, and this part of town attracts a lot of immigrants and students. The neighbourhood stretches out from the Assistens Kirkegård, the churchyard, where many famous Danes are buried, among others Soren Kierkegaard, Dan Turréll and H.C. Andersen. The churchyard also acts as a calm, lush breathing space in the middle of the city, and many locals go there to sunbathe, relax and have picnics by the old headstones. One of Copenhagen’s by far most creative streets is located in Nørrebro. Jægersborggade has everything from luxurious vintage clothing to the wafer-thin, hand-made ceramic design in workshops and gallery. Jægersborggade, that used to be a rough, socially burdened street, is well on its way to becoming Nørrebro’s centre for exciting little shops and high-quality cuisine, but take note that there are a few people

in the street, who may or may not be dealing certain illegal substances and therefore do not care to be photographed at all. Murder at the museum? If you feel like a chilling visit to the museum try out former police station number six on Fælledvej, which has now been converted into The Danish Police Museum. Currently the museum has an exhibition on the infamous, and still unsolved double murder at Peter Bangs Vej – the most spectacular case ever in the Danish history of criminal investigation. At the Police Museum many hitherto classified items involved in the murder case are now on public display. In Nørrebro you will also find a wide range of restaurants. Prices are low and the food is simple, healthy and good. The ambience is very Nørrebroish: cosy, relaxed but with the occasional loud chattering and rambunctious party of guests.

other fellow travellers do not share your passion for fashion, they will be able to find things of interest at ILLUM as well. A. C. ILLUM WAS A TRENDSETTER ILLUM’s history dates back to 1891, when a newspaper ad proclaimed that a store for apparel and garments was about to open in Copenhagen. “The store will carry the largest selection of anything related to the industry” said the ad which was signed A. C. Illum. Anton Carl Illum was a skilled businessman and had foreseen the growing demand for tangible products and the change in consumer behavior in Copenhagen. That’s why ILLUM quickly became a popular place for the Copenhageners to shop and has maintained its position until today. OVER A HUNDRED YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN CUSTOMER SERVICE ILLUM celebrated its 120th anniversary last year and the statement from ILLUM’s very first ad has proven to be true even today. ILLUM still carries a very large selection of goods and brands. It is now a significantly larger department store than back in 1891 and the range of products has expanded too. What hasn’t changed over the years is the emphasis on customer service. The staff at ILLUM will always be happy to help you find exactly what you need.

Logo from a love letter ILLUM’s logo with the two swallows originates from the love letters between A. C. Illum and his fiancé Marie Andersen. He proposed to her in a letter, and in her reply was a vignette of two flying swallows – and of course the answer “yes”. After that, A. C. Illum decided to make the swallows the trademark of his store.

Danish furniture designers In the 1950ies, Danish furniture design became world renowned. Today, the minimalist wood furniture known as Danish Modern still attracts new customers. Kaare Klint (1888-1954) The architect Kaare Klint was a firm believer in functionality and simple, honest aesthetics. He has had a huge impact on the development of Danish furniture design and is world famous for his own furniture designs such as the Safari Chair, the Faaborg Chair and the Addition Sofa. Mogens Koch (1898-1992) Architect Mogens Koch had a special talent for combining function and aesthetics in his furniture. He worked with Kaare Klint and shared his belief in functionality. Among his most famous designs are his bookcase system and the Folding programme. Hans Jørgen Wegner (1914-2007) Hans Jørgen Wegner was a highly productive furniture designer and he has designed about 500 chairs, among them the Y-chair and the Round chair which gave him his international breakthrough. The Round chair became famous when it appeared on TV in America. The chair was used in the televised debates between Nixon and Kennedy in 1960, and it is now known simply as “the Chair.”

Tables and chairs that will last for generations Classic Danish furniture design remains high in demand all over the world. At Rud. Rasmussen Joineries, they make tables, chairs and sofas that have proven to stand the test

of time.

BY LOUISE FOGH HANSEN If you buy a chair, designed by Kaare Klint, H. J. Wegner, or one of the other classic Danish furniture designers, you don’t just buy a chair for yourself, you buy a piece of furniture that can be passed on for generations and be of use to your children and grandchildren as well. The wear and tear over the years will only highlight the beauty of the materials, such as wood and leather. The secret behind the staying power of the Danish furniture classics lies in the timeless design and the superb craftsmanship. Rud. Rasmussen Joineries has collaborated with the most gifted Danish furniture designers through decades and made their visions come true in the highest quality imaginable. In the Rud. Rasmussen Workshop on Nørrebro in Copenhagen, art furniture is made with a care and consideration that leaves no detail unattended. There’s also a store and a showroom where you can see the finished chairs and tables and decide if they would suit your own living room. EXCELLENT CRAFTSMANSHIP Forget about mass production by assembly lines: The tables, chairs and bookcases from Rud. Rasmussen Joineries are made in the exact opposite manner. Here, world famous design classics are being carefully crafted by highly skilled cabinet makers using the same techniques and methods that were also used a hundred years ago. The wood for the furniture is carefully selected and then left to dry for up to a year in the drying cellar, before it is cut and fitted. The processed Fortsættes side 18

The leather covers can be made of oxhide or niger hide, which is leather from goats living near the Niger River. The last step of the process is a thorough quality check where every detail is controlled to make sure it lives up to standard. DESIGNER AND CABINET MAKER WORKING TOGETHER Rud. Rasmussen Joineries has produced art furniture since 1869 and is one of the eldest Danish cabinet makers still producing. The company was founded by Rudolph Rasmussen and since then it has been passed on from generation to generation. One of the trademarks of Rud. Rasmussen is the close collaboration between the furniture designer and cabinet maker. Furniture from designers such as Kaare Klint, Mogens Koch and Poul Kjærholm are made at Rud. Rasmussen Joineries. They all had a significant impact on the rise of Danish design and their timeless styles remain relevant today. That’s why Rud. Rasmussen Joineries has caught the attention of international magazines such as Monocle and Architectural Digest. SOMETHING FOR YOU? In the Rud. Rasmussen showroom and store you can find inspiration on how to furnish your own home. Couldn’t get a table at Noma? Don’t worry, Copenhagen has plenty of other possibilities for foodies on the prowl for the meal of a lifetime.

By Louise Fogh Hansen

Photos: scanpix

The culinary scene in Copenhagen is thriving with new, inventive restaurants popping up everywhere. Since the world famous restaurant Noma had its big breakthrough, the Danes have embraced a new food culture that focuses on high quality with a personal touch. Foodblogger Trine Lai has followed the development of the dining scene in Copenhagen since 2007. She dines frequently at top class restaurants and shares her insights and recommendations on her blog verygoodfood.dk. “It’s obvious that René Redzepi and Noma have had a huge impact on the culinary scene in Copenhagen. He and the new nordic cuisine practically gave the Danes a new food culture,” she says. The Danes have developed an interest for food and dining that manifests itself in popular cooking shows on TV and a change of habits. They buy high quality ingredients in the supermarkets for their home cooking and dining in restaurants is no longer only a weekend activity. Confident chefs with new ideas With the locals becoming increasingly aware of the joys of dining, the chefs have jumped at the opportunity to create personal dishes and challenge their customers. Trine Lai explains that Copenhagen has been struck by a wave of young, talented chefs, who are opening their own restaurants in order to pursue their culinary visions. They don’t necessarily belong to the new Nordic cuisine, but they draw inspiration from Noma in another way.

20  Ticket to Copenhagen

“The example of Noma has inspired the upcoming generation of chefs to have confidence and faith in their own ideas. The chefs are doing their own thing instead of replicating others,” she says. Trine Lai writes her blog in English and she is often contacted by international foodies who are planning a trip to Copenhagen and want insider tips to the best restaurants. The tourists can’t eat all their meals at Noma, which benefits the new, upcoming restaurants, Trine Lai explains. “There’s a spillover effect. A lot of gastrotourists are coming to Copenhagen to dine at Noma and then they’re staying for a few days so they have to eat somewhere else as well.” Cosy atmosphere and reasonable prices Accessibility is another trademark of the dining scene in Copenhagen. Prices are kept at a reasonable level, as a guest you can dress casually and the restaurants strive for a cosy, relaxed atmosphere. “The Danes have discovered that it doesn’t have to be something fancy to dine at a restaurant. It can be a nice, cosy way of trying out new dishes,” says Trine Lai and states, that Copenhagen has a really good selection of restaurants with prices in the budget and medium range. “The chefs are creative and quality conscious. They’re keeping prices down by saving on the table cloths and cutlery and cutting down on the ornaments in order to prioritize the food and the quality of the ingredients above everything else.” Continued one page 22

All excesses are trimmed away, so you can focus all your attention on enjoying the meal and your company. “You may sit a bit close to the next table and the décor might be quite minimalistic, but you get an excellent meal for a very reasonable price. I think that’s very positive, because it makes the restaurants so much more accessible for everyone,” Trine Lai says. Go to the Meatpacking District for dinner So where to go when dining in Copenhagen? According to Trine Lai you can find excellent restaurants everywhere – both in the centre of the city and in the neighbourhoods. In Nørrebro, Trine Lai highlights Jægersborggade which has transformed from a rough area to a place with designer shops and high quality restaurants. You can also check out the Meatpacking District of Copenhagen which is situated on Vesterbro. Here you’ll find trendy galleries, restaurants and bars right next to meat companies. The former activities of the area are saluted in street names such as Slagterboderne (Butcher Stalls) and Flæsketorvet (Pork Square). The district has a vibrant nightlife so it’s the perfect place to go if you want to go drinking and dancing after your meal. Copenhagen – a gastro village As a foodblogger with international perspective, Trine Lai has many food-obsessed friends from other countries who love to wine and dine in Copenhagen. The city is easy to explore with short distances and excellent public transportation. So no matter which neighbourhood you’re in, you will still be able to go to a restaurant across town within an hour or so. That makes room for spontaneity, Trine Lai explains. “What sets Copenhagen apart from other capitals is its size. Copenhagen is a small city, and you can practically walk from one end to another, which means that everything is always within reach. You can try out all the best restaurants during your stay without having to plan a lot or spending a fortune on taxis.”

Noma – the world’s best restaurant The restaurant Noma in Copenhagen has been named the best restaurant in the world by Restaurant Magazine for three years in a row. The restaurant also holds two Michelin stars. The restaurant was the frontrunner of the new Nordic cuisine. The main idea is to use local and seasonal ingredients and traditional techniques in new, unconventional ways. Noma is led by chef René Redzepi, who pushes the boundaries for what we usually see on a plate and serves innovative dishes like edible flowers or living prawns. René Redzepi has made the TIME magazines list of the 100 most influential people in the world. The restaurant uses local, Nordic ingredients in inventive and daring ways, that will challenge your taste buds. Ever thought of eating ants? At Noma, that might be your first course. The rise of the new Nordic cuisine has been a key factor in making Copenhagen the city in Scandinavia that holds the highest number of Michelin stars. 14 stars have been distributed to 13 restaurants.

MUST see What you

in Copenhagen BY LOUISE FOGH HANSEN

An old amusement park, the home of the royal family and the alternative lifestyles of Christiania: If this is your first visit to the Danish capital, there are some sights that you really shouldn't miss.

PHOTOS: SCANPIX, PETER HARTLE

THE ROUND TOWER Take a stroll up the steep spiral walk inside the Round Tower and enjoy the view from the top, where you can gaze over the rooftops of Copenhagen. The tower was built between 1637 and 1642 by the Danish king Christian IV. On top of the tower there is an observatory, used by astronomers to study the stars and the planets. Today it is the oldest functioning observatory in Europe.

Mid–October to mid-March, Tuesday and Wednesday, both the Tower and the Observatory are also open 7 pm-10 pm

CHRISTIANIA From royalty to rebels: Christiania is a freetown that was established by hippies and squatters in 1971, when they took over an abandoned area of former military barracks. Since then Christiania has remained a controversial topic in Danish politics. The freetown sets its own rules, which means that cars are not allowed and marijuana is openly sold. About 1.000 people live in the area of 34 hectares.

AMALIENBORG Amalienborg is the official residence of the Danish royal family and actually consists of four almost identical palaces around an octagonal courtyard. Queen Margrethe and Henrik, the Prince Consort, live in Schack's Palace, while Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary have been living in Brockdorff’s Palace since 2010, when the palace was restored. The other two palaces are used for representation and ceremonial functions. Levetzau's Palace also holds the Amalienborg Museum. Amalienborg is guarded by the Royal Life Guards. You can witness the changing of the guard every day at noon.

THE LITTLE MERMAID

The statue of a mermaid on a rock by the quay Langelinie is inspired by the fairytale of the same name by the Danish writer H. C. Andersen. The statue is only 1.25 meters tall but has nonetheless become a Copenhagen icon. The life of the statue has proven to be filled with just as much adventure as the story it depicts. The statue has been damaged and decapitated several times. In 1964 the mermaid's head was sawn off, and in 2003 the statue was blasted from its base with explosives. But the mermaid has recovered every time, and in 2010 she was sent to China to represent Denmark at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai. She is now back at her spot in Langelinie, welcoming travellers to the harbour of Copenhagen. www.mermaidsculpture.dk

Just relax. That will be all, you’ll have to do, once you’ve entered one of the many spa and wellness retreats in Copenhagen. Then you can return from your stay in Copenhagen as a new person with smoother skin and no tensions at all. Whether you prefer a body scrub or an aromatherapy steam, you’ll have a good chance of finding a wellness program, that will suit you perfectly. You can go with your fellow traveller share the experience of ease and tranquillity. Spa and wellness retreats do not only offer massage and skincare

Take care of your body A city break can take its toll on your body and mind. Exploring a new city means taking in a lot of new impressions and you might need a little peace and quiet to contemplate. So take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and unwind at a spa. If your feet are sore and tired from a long day of walking in the streets of Copenhagen, you can get a foot bath and foot massage. Or if it’s your neck and shoulders that need a little care, you can loosen up your tensions with a hot stone massage or aromatherapy massage. Spoil yourself Sometimes it can be hard to put the stress and worries of your work and everyday life behind you. But there’s nothing like a few hours at a spa that can make even the most dedicated, hard working people forget about their duties and chores at home. So just turn off your smart phone and jump in the jacuzzi! While away from home, you deserve a little pampering.

This treatment applies hot lava stones to get in-depth massage - just where the muscles are extra sore and tense Aromatic oils for your massage

Wellness fact What is wellness exactly? The term wellness describes a balance between body, mind and soul that will bring you in a state of well-being. SELF-PORTRAIT

EXHIBITION 14.9.12.-13.1.13 Louisiana’s grand-scale exhibition of the season has extraordinary appeal, allowing us to meet many of the greatest names and truly special profiles of modern art face to face. From Picasso, Kahlo and Dalí to Basquiat and Koons. At once straightforward and enigmatic, the self-portrait forms the most direct and intimate bond between the artist and ourselves as well as raising a number of intriguing questions. Louisiana’s fascinating presentation assembles more than 60 artists and 150 works. From Picasso, Matisse and Munch to present masters such as Baselitz, Hockney and Richter as well as many important contemporary artists. Self-Portrait is shown in the South Wing and divided into nine themes, e.g. Pioneers, The Artist in the Studio, Mirrors and The Course of Life. Overall, the exhibition takes us on a special and exciting journey through the development of more than a century of modern art. As reflected through the insight and perspective of the very artists who shaped it.

Egon Schiele, Self-portrait, 1911. (Ernst Ploil, Vienna).

Designmuseum Danmark Album Covers – Vinyl Revival EXHIBITION 11.10.12 – 10.3.13 A large and comprehensive exhibition about the visual culture of album cover art with a selection of some 400 LP covers. The exhibition ranges from the first illustrated LP covers around 1950 until today’s vinyl revival. In a broad thematic approach the exhibition describes and captures key moments in the stylistically rich and diverse development of album cover art and covers the whole gamut of genres and expressions: jazz, classical music, rock ‘n’ roll diversity and light entertainment. Emphasising the main developments and trends in this diversity, the exhibition explores the image universe of this specific medium through numerous themes addressing genre characteristics, psychedelic style, male and female style icons, cover art body images, urbanism, nature and landscape forms, exoticism with dreams of Paradise, the typographic album cover etc. Most album cover artists remain relatively unknown, but the exhibition showcases the most influential. The exhibition will take up most of the museum’s temporary exhibition space.

Kunstforeningen Gl Strand Unfinished Journeys / Extract 2012 Exhibition 24.08.12 – 11.11.12 During Copenhagen Art Festival GL STRAND sheds light on the Journey as a characteristic feature of the modern world and its influential impact on how we as people interact with each other in an ever-expanding world without borders. Being able to move over distances, seeking out new people, new contexts, places and opportunities outside one’s own geographical area is a central feature of our lives today. In acknowledging ourselves as hybrids, the journey becomes a possibility to find new ways for self realization and personal development. The exhibition thus examines the journey as an existential feature and how it has shaped our ways of living – both in terms of the negative effects of globalization in matters of migration and colonization and in contrast its effects on the mental state of mind within the context of cultural identity development. Exhibition 24.11.2012 – 20.01.13 EXTRACT 2012 presents seven young artists who all graduated from the Danish and International Academies of Fine Arts in 2012. The exhibition is a unique opportunity to gain insight into what is going on just now at the very young international art scene.

Up – Up – Up – Oops / Between the Lines

Exhibition 06.10.12 – 11.11.12 An art exhibition based on TOWERS by the association of artists called PRO. Man has built countless towers throughout history. Towers bring us closer to heaven, provide us with a vantage point and offer hope over the unachievable. We are simultaneously in safety and also under control, but what else? There are other things towering up. And then, of course, there is the Round Tower: Up – Up – Up – Oops! Exhibition 24.11.12 – 06.01.13 Basket4life – 10 of Denmark’s leading basketmakers exhibit their weaving under the motto ”Out with the plastic bags in with the shopping baskets”. The exhibition shows the great span you find in wickerwork, from the traditional weaving to the experimenting and ground breaking.

Danes like to stay fit, and more than anywhere else in the country, Copenhagen is the place to be on the move

By jon bjerre You have probably already noticed them - all of the bikes. More than half of Copenhageners bike to work or school every day. As much as it is a way to stay fit, it is also one of the most efficient ways to get around the city. This is mainly due to the city’s 350 kilometers of bicycle paths, but also because Copenhagen is as flat as a pancake. In addition, short cuts and cycle superhighways positioned away from car traffic give bikers a healthy and different experience of the city. If you feel like giving pedals a spin, free city bikes can be found all over central Copenhagen and many bike stores rent them out. Shoppers in Shape Shoppers are another lively group in Copenhagen. Shopping in the capital involves a lot of walking, with a large number of people going by foot to explore the city’s numerous shopping streets. Cutting through the heart of Copenhagen is the longest pedestrian shopping area in Europe, Strøget, where about 250,000 people go every day in the summer, and about 120,000 on a winter day. Strøget stretches out around one kilometer and depending on your power shopping skills, a day out shopping could make up for a decent workout. Clean Running Others want to get away from the crowded shopping areas and go for a run in one of Copenhagen’s many green areas. Copenhagen is one of the most environmentally friendly capitals in the world, making it an excellent place for running. The most famous area for running is The Lakes (in Danish Søerne), which is a formation of three rectangular

lakes that form the end of the Inner City. Other popular running sites include parks like Frederiksberg Have, Fælledparken and the historical fortress of Kastellet. If you want to feel the fresh ocean breeze, the promenade along Amager Beach Park, just five kilometers from the city centre, is a beautiful running scene with great views across to the Swedish coast. City Playground Turning the city into one big playground, the emerging sport of parkour has landed in Copenhagen. Parkour is a training discipline focused on overcoming obstacles in the urban space, involving moving from point A to point B in the fastest and most efficient way possible. From being an underground sport with only a few practitioners, parkour has grown over the years to a popular activity. In 2009 the biggest parkour and free-running park in the world opened in Amager. In the park the local Team JiYo teaches the basics of parkour. Fit as a Viking More and more Danes like to stay active in the winter, Viking-style. These people are known as winter swimmers. A swim in the ice cold water is said to be good for the health and blood circulation and thousands of Copenhageners submerge themselves in the city’s clean harbor water every morning throughout the winter. In fact, winter swimming is so popular that it usually takes more than five years to become a member of a club.

Did you know?

Get your facts straight

about Denmark,

Denmark is widely known as the fairytale land of Hans Christian Andersen and the home of Carlsberg, LEGO and Shakespeare’s Hamlet. But there is more to Denmark than that. What do you know about Denmark, the Danes and Copenhagen? Test your knowledge or learn a new thing or two. BY JON BJERRE DENMARK IS a happy nation of 5.5 million people, 1.2 million of whom live in Copenhagen. According to the United Nation’s World Happiness Report 2012, the Danes are the happiest people in the world. The ranking is based on a variety of factors including health, family and job security as well as social factors like political freedom and lack of government corruption. THE WORD ‘DENMARK’ can be traced back to the Viking age and is carved on the famous Jelling Stone from around 900 AD. Between the 13th and 17th centuries, Denmark was a superpower, whose influence matched that of the largest European countries. Even though the influence of Denmark is considerably smaller these days, Denmark takes the lead in areas such as architecture, farming, design, green technology and pharmaceuticals. COPENHAGEN WAS FOUNDED in the 11th century, but it did not become the capital of Denmark until the beginning of the 15th century. International media outlets have repeatedly recognized Copenhagen as one of the best cities to live in. The capital is considered one of the world’s most environmentally friendly cities, due to its clean harbor, abundance of green areas and great biking facilities. THE DANISH MONARCHY is over 1000 years old, making it the oldest monarchy in Europe. The current monarch, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II, can thus trace her lineage back to the first Viking king, ‘Gorm the Old’ who died in 958. Today, Denmark is a constitutional monarchy, which essentially means that the Queen has no political power. As a figurehead, the Queen opens exhibitions, attends anniversaries, carries out charity work and represents Denmark abroad. The Queen is very popular in Denmark and every year hundreds of people gather in front of Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen to wish her a happy birthday.

In fact, the highest points T are the pylons holding the Great Belt Bridge connecting Zealand and Funen, rising 254 meters above sea level. In comparison, the highest natural point in Denmark is only 170 meters above sea level. I f you enjoy the sound of crashing waves, you are in the right place. Denmark has one of Europe’s longest coastlines, amounting to a staggering 7,314 km. No matter where you go within the country you will never be more than 50 km from a beach or a harbor. he Danes love green. More than 20 percent of Denmark’s T energy comes from renewable energy and the goal is to reach 100 percent by 2050. Today, much of the renewable energy comes from wind turbines, in which Denmark is a world leader in developing new technologies. Copenhagen is a role model for many of the world’s biggest cities when it comes to sustainable urban development. The capital intends to become carbon neutral by 2025 and expects to reduce carbon emissions by 20 percent as early as 2015. Sources: Wikipedea, Visit Denmark, Denmark.dk and UN.

anish architecture and design is known and cherished all D over the world. From the famous Sydney Opera House designed by Jørn Utzon, to the world’s best residential house in 2011 awarded to architect Bjarke Ingels for ‘8 House’ in Copenhagen. Industrial design, furniture and aesthetic objects have always been some of Denmark’s biggest exports. Famous Danish designers include: Børge Mogensen, Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, Poul Henningsen and Verner Panton. hristmas is the time of year where the Danish concept of C ‘hygge’ (cozyness) really comes into play. In Denmark, Christmas is celebrated on the 24th of December, but the city comes alive with the holiday spirit already on December 1st when the streets are adorned with twinkling lights and pine ornaments. The Danes maintain that Santa Claus lives in Greenland and every year Danish kids send thousands of letters to Santa’s workshop in Nuuk. Greenland is, by the way, an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark. I f you want to please your taste buds Copenhagen is literally the best place in the world to be as you can read elsewhere in this magazine, for the third year in a row the Copenhagen restaurant Noma is ranked as the ‘Best Restaurant in the World’ by Restaurant Magazine.
